A Quick Word On Those Fucking Ads Intruding Upon Comments

You may have noticed some adverts appearing in the comments section lately. This is because Disqus has started shoving them in and charging users to have them removed.

I cannot apologize enough for this. I’m sorry for the inconvenience and the current inability to guarantee against what this site usually guarantees against.

I’m fiercely proud of my website’s ad-free policy and I feel incredibly intruded upon.

I’ve always liked the service Disqus provided, and would have considered paying for a premium service of some kind, but I’m not going to fork over money after feeling strongarmed like that. What a horrible sales tactic.

We’re going to be importing comments to a new system soon. Until then, Adblock the shit out of my site if you please.

We’ll get the ads blasted ASAP, and I’ll say no more until the Jimquisition I’ve got planned about my constant fight against advertising.

That picture just makes me miss Sir Cristopher Lee. He has a Metal album, you know. And he also narrated for Rhapsody of Fire.

I mean… On one hand, it’s a free service. On the other, these ads seem a bit toss.
My site isn’t big at all, but I guess I’ll research FOSS self-hosted solution and migrate to one of those.

As I said before, I didn’t even know what people were talking about when they kept discussing ads on your site.
Then I realize that for once ABP was functioning correctly. Thank the goddess for no small favors.

Ah, you stole my punchline. I was about to put this comment on the top by myself:

Forcibly adding ads to your comment service and strongarming sites that
use your comment service to have to pay you in order to not have those
ads on for their commenters, even if those ads would technically help
the wallets of site owners, is a Disqus-ting move.

Fortyseven
Guest

Oh shit, I see them now. I had to disable adblock. Yikes, that’s intrusive as fuck.

Pomcomic
Guest

Disqus announced this a few months ago, they started rolling out ads in February – but only on sites they deem “big enough” (after tons of uproar from smaller sites, this has been a big issue in the webcomic community for example). But yeah, it’s a shitty move and I can imagine your frustration if you didn’t know this beforehand.

Pomcomic
Guest

That being said tho: Jim, if you’re looking into an alternative solution, my research has concluded that “Widgetpack” seems like one of the better ones out there. You’ll have to fork over some money to import comments, but they don’t force ads on you, not even on the free model; it also lets users log in with existing social media accounts and as a guest. Might be worth a look.

Disqus has no right implementing video ads with auto playing BULLSHIT into their comment section. Frankly, It’s a comment platform, it has no right to put ads on it in the first place, especially ones that yank focus from the user and bother you with auto playing noisy bullshit.

So they and their little shitty marketing team, advertisers, and comment system can fuck off back to hell.

Fuck ’em.

Pomcomic

Not saying that it’s not a dick move (because it sure is), I’m just saying that they did in fact announce this move, so it did not come out of nowhere as most believe. “Frankly, It’s a comment platform, it has no right to put ads on it in the first place” …. hate to burst that bubble, but yes, yes they do have that right. They OWN the comment platform, they can do whatever scummy thing they want to do with it. Sucks, I know. A simple solution (that Jim already pointed out): Adblock. Works like a charm, let… Read more »

The ad model is toss. If advertising wasn’t so damned intrusive Adblock wouldn’t be necessary. And, rather than dialing it back, advertisers respond to Adblock by doubling down and making ads even more intrusive (and damaging, ads often can put all sorts of shit on your system), making Adblock even more necessary.

the issue is many people with adblock DO NOT whitelist sites that have acceptable ad policies. Or use a separate way to support sites they want to survive. As always, they are people who do. The biggest look at this is probably Youtube Red. I’m going to guess only a fraction of people using Adblock in some form on youtube moved on to use Youtube Red. I believe it works out to something like 15-25% of people who do block ads are willing to pay for content. You cannot have it both ways, things need to be paid for. I… Read more »

I use AdBlock because Ads slow my laptop and browser right down, there’s also that auto playing bollocks and even malware you get can get from there.

Once again, there are websites with ads which are completely acceptable.

Say, for example, this site had two banner ads per page. One at the top above title bar. And a second to the right of article, under the sidebar.

Would you whitelist that? Do you whitelist websites like that? I’ve visited enough sites that I tend to default whitelist everything and give 1-chance to avoid blacklisting.

The thing is, the ad model is pretty well and truly fucked. They almost assuredly permanently crippled it when ads got so intrusive and obnoxious. People are willing to pay to avoid ads and for convenience, the success of steaming services and music services demonstrates that. But by getting so gross so fast, internet advertisers shot themselves in the foot. Once people take the step and put their Adblock on, it’s hard to get them to turn it off, especially when, time and again, turning it off demonstrates why they had it on in the first place. There are ethical… Read more »

Well I’m sorry, I am, but I don’t want to have my ears blasted out by obnoxious, frivolous auto-playing ads that I have not a single fucking interest in.

The people who make the content aren’t responsible. It’s the advertisers who are responsible. Flashing headache banners of all the colors, auto-playing, no auditory volume editing, a persistence to cram in as much as they can get away with.

This shit is partly why I stopped watching television. My tolerance for them is minimal and that’s not my fault, it’s theirs for eroding my tolerance for all my life.

I’ve been getting those first two mainly so far. I didn’t even think about the Ellen one since I’ve been seeing that on other sites on my phone for weeks (I don’t ad block nearly as aggressively on my phone as I do on my PC at home) and it wasn’t until I saw him mention it occurred to me that it wasn’t normal. Sad comment on how quickly we get used to obtrusive shit like this I guess.
