A Quick Word On Those Fucking Ads Intruding Upon Comments

You may have noticed some adverts appearing in the comments section lately. This is because Disqus has started shoving them in and charging users to have them removed.

I cannot apologize enough for this. I’m sorry for the inconvenience and the current inability to guarantee against what this site usually guarantees against.

I’m fiercely proud of my website’s ad-free policy and I feel incredibly intruded upon.

I’ve always liked the service Disqus provided, and would have considered paying for a premium service of some kind, but I’m not going to fork over money after feeling strongarmed like that. What a horrible sales tactic.

We’re going to be importing comments to a new system soon. Until then, Adblock the shit out of my site if you please.

We’ll get the ads blasted ASAP, and I’ll say no more until the Jimquisition I’ve got planned about my constant fight against advertising.

It’s kinda funny that this is the first comment section I’ve noticed it doing it to. Fuckin diet pill ads.

I really like disqus and how their system works, but fuck this trash. I see it in a few places and even though the ads are easy enough to scroll past, there is a principle to it. I’m even willing to give them the slack that as a company they need to make money. It would great if they just didn’t force it on people.

I use Adblock already so I didn’t notice.

I can’t even scroll down to read the other comments anymore: the ads keep forcing focus back onto the ad at the top. Jesus H Christ, if you’re going to do ads, don’t do them in this aggressive, layout breaking way. I literally can’t even USE Disqus now! How is this a good idea?

My obsequious adoration of you flagged slightly the other day when I noticed the ads. I will now resume thanking God for you and your dedication to transparency, quality, and not being treated like a commodity. I hope Disqus regrets.

A shame really. I’ve always enjoyed the Disqus platform as well.

Good on you for saying no to rear attacks Jim.

Real shame Jim’s gonna abandon disqus, it’s probably the best comments system out there.

Disqus is one of the best comments services out there, if not the best. I don’t blame them for making money. It’s a paid-for service with an ad-supported ‘free’ version.

Nothing in life is truly free, folks. Even our beloved Jim needs money to survive and to do what he does so well.

Yay…another once good thing monetised without so much as the briefest of consideration towards dignity.

For all adblock users who want to comment because ad block breaks comments,

You need to block the root url of the ads which is disqusads(dot)com. once you make a filter for that all the ads disappear

The easy way is to disable easylist, select the block element option, pick an ad, delete all the text after the first / and boom, your done

I liked how well this chat worked on mobile. Even updating quickly and was formatted perfectly. Hopefully you can get something just as good.

I turned off my adblocker and holy fuck. All I see is non stop spam trying to “In” Ellen DeGeneres…oh wait no a fucking car commercial just got shoved in my face as typed that.

The fucking hell is wrong with these people…

Hmm… I wonder if the haters are going to point at the ads and go: SEE? SEE? HE WAS CLICKBAITING ALL THIS TIME!

And this is why I’m switching away from Windows Phone – no ad-blocking capability.

The evolution of software
1. A paid version of a piece of software
2. A free alternative is released
3. Everyone starts using it, but they soon realise they need to make money
4. They force their schemes upon their users to try and make their business profitable.
5. An open source/community produced version is released which promises no ads
6. Everyone eventually moves to that and lives happily ever after.

They anounced it months ago, and I can’t really blame a growing platform for wanting to start generating cash. Good on you for switching to a better alternative tho.

Once this all sorted, it would be fun (for a week or so) to just have Juicy Slot™ ads just plastered everywhere. Just as giant middle finger to advertisers.

I’m hoping that there’ll be a midweek JQ, as it seems there’s two separate topical topics to get out of the way real quick: The ad struggles and the Brash addendum. Not sure which one of those should go in the midweek JQ.

But seriously though, I don’t like how it’s now causing my browser to forcibly reposition its window at the top of the comment section every 10-30 seconds, with there always being a several-second period where you can’t even drag the browser window away from it.

I’d say talk to customer service. It seems there’s a way to get your comments ad-free without paying.

Bloody hell there’s an ad like every six comments. That’s disgusting.
