That’s a shame, I’ve enjoyed Volitions work over the years and I was kind of hoping this would have the over the humour of Saint’s Row mixed with the environmental destruction of Red Faction Guerrilla.

I will get this game nontheless, because I have always wanted to try a MOBA game before, but never could due my lack of internet at home, and this seems like a good type of similar MOBA game for singleplayer gamers, with a good variation of characters.

Also because I did love SRIV and i do love cell shaded games.

Huh, wasn’t expecting it to get more than a 5, which is what I assumed Jim used for “serviceable, fun for a bit, but nothing special and ultimately disappointing in execution”.

Is Jim no longer doing written reviews? Watching videos rather than reading the reviews (with Jim Sterling’s voice floating around in my brain, naturally) is hugely inconvenient.

Yeah, I really prefer written reviews most of the time.

I’m really enjoying this game but I find myself saying ‘Despite xxx, I really like this game’ way too much. It is nice to play a AAA game with a proper jump button though, feels like forever that my characters feet haven’t been glued to the ground unless the plot requires it.

Good review, I agree with pretty much everything said.

So… after all the DLC (inevitable) and a $20 “All DLC included” version comes out; then it’s a great game to pick up? Shame they didn’t keep it in the oven a bit longer and bake in some of that planned DLC. Would’ve been a much more valuable launch.

I don’t know if it will get DLC considering there’s no season pass(the first Volition game not to have one as far as I can recall), this might as an Andromeda situation where there is no DLC.

It’s precisely how the trailers portrayed it to be. So there’s that.
I’ve never got into the saints row humour that much, it all felt too second-hand and predictable, if that makes any sense. But now it sounds like Volition has either euthanised their writing team or given them discount lobotomies for this game. Am interested to know what’s going on with them since SR4 as they’ve nosedived a bit since in quality. Is it Deep Silver being overly restrictive or tight?

I would love Saint’s Row if it weren’t for the awful characters.

Yeah, this is the impression I’ve been getting, which is a shame because I did hope for more from Volition after Saints Row 4. I don’t know, maybe it’ll be worth picking up in a couple of months on a sale or something, but there’s enough good stuff to play still from this year that I’m behind on that ‘kind of okay and playable’ isn’t going to cut it. The character designs look cool though, which might be the one thing that wins me over, but it sounds like customizing/finding skins is rare enough that even that suffers some. They… Read more »

That was kinda my impression, a perfectly acceptable game that’ll be worth a look when the price drops. I like a lot about it. I like the cast of characters and the bright, colorful visuals. I avoid hero shooters because I’m not much for multiplayer, but I love character choices like this. I’ll wait for a sale, maybe $40, before picking it up. I think Crackdown 3 will be more fun to play (if they get it right), but the visuals for it are darker and the characters don’t look interesting. Sorry, Terry Cuise.

The fact that a game of this type somehow doesn’t have co-op just seems like another poor design choice. Getting together with friends in these types of open world shooter games makes the experience much more fun for everyone.

The only thing i really remeber Volition for is Conflict: Freespace.

But nobody ever brings that up. 🙁

Well now I’ve been reminded I need to replace my ancient joystick so I can replay Freespace 2. Or one of the nice total conversions for Freespace Open like that (or at least how I remember it) balls-hard Babylon 5 TC.

Conflict: Freespace was I think the third game I ever owned. Man, they don’t make ’em like that any more…

I’m liking this game so far, favorite characters are Daisy, Joule, Scheherazade, Braddock, Fortune, Lazarus and Rama. I’ll be honest i’m actually preferring this game to Saints Row 4, which I personally found to be a bit of a letdown compared to previous entries. How you felt about this game is actually kind of how I felt about SR4, I felt like that game was a low rent version of Prototype, several times while playing I thought to myself “this is OK, but I could be playing the Prototype games instead”, SR4 also felt like a case of a more… Read more »
