Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – It’s Grindy, It’s Greedy, It’s Ubisoft! (Jimpressions)

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is one damn greedy game. In addition to its half dozen special editions, its Amazon Alexa tie-in, its Totino’s promotion, and its season pass, it’s filled to the brim with microtransactions. As well as all that, it’s been purposefully turned into a grindfest in order to sell XP boosters, like this is some free-to-play mobile game.

Fee-to-pay games are back in a major way. More like Assassin’s Greed!

I still remember when Assassin’s Creed was about jumping down behind someone and stabbing them dead, then parkouring away across rooftops while a bunch of guards chased you, and hiding in haystacks. That’s the Assassin’s Creed that I liked. In those days, combat was kind of the worst designed part of the game. How did Ubisoft look at that and think: “That, we need more of that.” I haven’t played an Assassin’s Creed game since then, because Udon’tplay, but looking at these it really doesn’t look like AC anymore. Apparently you can’t even instant-stealthkill anymore? They might as well change… Read more »

My interest in this game was already pretty low after Origins (which I just found utterly tedious) and now it’s gone to zero. The best games in this series for me were Black Flag and Syndicate (especially the former), although I skipped III and V (Unity) so can’t comment on those. Odyssey looks like its taken all the worst parts of Origins (far too large an open world with too much travelling and grinding taking the place of fun gameplay/story/combat) and doubled down on them. Add microtransactions required to make it more fun, aaannnnd I’m out.

I do everything on the map in these games so I hadn’t noticed a grind. I’m typically overleveled for the regions I’m in now, I didn’t understand the need for XP boosters. I also check the Message Board in each region, as the contracts are typically things you’re giong to do anyways, so might as well get extra money and xp for them. To be clear, it’s disgusting that they’re there at all. And I can understand if someone just doing the main quest and a few side missions falling behind the level curve. But as a completionist, I’m not… Read more »

Hmmmm…..I wonder if the whole “ethics in games jurnalizm” crowd are mad about the way that games media, not to mention the Youtubers and streamers they always hold p as honest sources over the ‘corrupt’ media are giving Ubisoft a pass for ruining the game in order to sell microtransactions? Because if you actually cared about the state of games media you’d think the way almost every reviewer out there, both in traditional media and among prominent Youtube and Twitch personalities, just glosses over the desperate money grab each new big tentpole Ubisoft game is. Or are they too busy… Read more »

Gross. Just… gross Ubisoft. I’d say that I’d be waiting for a year and buying s complete bundle on sale, but I just don’t think it looks like a fun game worth my time. I got Origins on a steep discount a year after release, played it for two hours and then promptly forgot about it. I almost always finish games, but I couldn’t make it through the slog of Farcry 5. I think I’ve officially gotten tired of Ubisoft, and even if they ditched the abusive practices I’d still be done with them. When I play their games I… Read more »
