Copyright Deadlock (The Jimquisition)

The system doesn’t work, so break it some more. That’s the idea behind the Copyright Deadlock, a petty scheme that highlights the absurdity of YouTube’s ContentID system.

How can three corporations own a single video? Well, three apparently own THIS one. Konami, Nintendo, and Rhino all believe they own this episode.

Two of them want to monetize it.

How does that work? Let’s find out!

Much as I’d like to think something like this could work…
Again, dealing with Google.
In the end, you can break shit as much as you want, but in the end, it’s their shit, and if they’re spiteful enough, they WILL find a way to keep the status quo.

On another note…apparently Randy Pitchford’s being a cock again. With regards to the Duke Nukem IP, and screwing over people who were making money off their work on it. People with contracts-in-hand. Ears to the ground, on that one…

I really hope lots of other youtubers jump on this tactic, those who don’t rely on the ad revenue anyway. I think it could work really well.

I wonder if reviewers and let’s players could ever make a point by turning the shitty system to their advantage, if such an opportunity ever arose?

For example, if a publisher ever made a trailer for a game that they put up on Youtube that featured quotes from reviewers or streamers who had played the game, then (if the same rules truly cut both ways) the content creators they quoted would have grounds to claim THEIR video for using THEIR intellectual property, so they could get a taste of what it feels like?

Excellent video Jim. Good work. The cherry on top would be if Gavin now tried to copyright claim you for using footage of him. 😀

I saw an angry commenter on kotaku screaming you are spreading misinformation and that’s not the way content id works and there are still repercussions and I know more because I used youtube before google acquired it…
Any idea what he’s on about? Do you know of any repercussions? Or is the main point to deny ads being thrown up and since no ads go up… mission success?

Why do I have the gut reaction that you’re gonna get the banhammer soon Jim? Like, YouTube ain’t gonna put up with this malarkey!
Good for you, and I hope you go down fighting.

The Gina G prompted me to go find the full thing on Youtube. Is that ironic monetisation?
Because the chorus is catchy as sin, and I can’t stop playing it. Someone help.

Wow…i can’t believe it actually worked…i was expecting those companies to pick up the fact you were setting them up and they still swallowed the bait…btw, when are you doing the episode about “supporting a game so we can get more” =D? i’m usually among those who point out how stupid is that stance but i guess we need someone with actual talent to talk about it for people to get it =D

You should talk over some footage of Cool Cat Saves the Kids some time just to throw up a middle finger to the world

Incidentally, YouTube just announced some ContentID changes. It’s a step in the right direction. A step.
