Disqus Comments By Popular Demand

You will notice I’ve now got Disqus comments running on the site – heaven help me. I’ve imported all the existing ones, so your angry shouts and wry observations remain intact.

I realize there are design issues currently. The current grey background of the site does not play nice with the comments themselves. I’ll be working on that. Or at least finding someone more competent than me to do it.

(Edit: Thanks to Pomcomic on Twitter, the comments have their own background now. I don’t know shit about design, so thanks for the tip!)

The site overall is going to get some visual overhauls as soon as I find someone trustworthy and awesome to hire. Look forward to that. Until then, please understand!

I rather enjoy this comment system, I think it works rather nicely.

It baffles me why other websites refuse to adopt Disqus. It’s a lot more convenient.

I was hesitant because it was kind of like an opening of the floodgates. Using WP’s comment system gave me more control and kind of made sure only people who really cared enough to comment actually commented.

Still, who am I to go against the will of the people? Fingers crossed I don’t regret this. 🙂

Yeah, It might open the floodgates a bit, but you will never be able to close that gate anyway, so it might be best to let everyone enjoy it.
Thanks Jim!

If you do want more control you can set up Disqus through the moderator panel to hold comments until you approve them as well as a bunch of other options.

Let us hope you don’t get too disqus-ted at the comments.

Oh, don’t worry, Mr. Sterling. You will.

Instead you should have created an army of mutant-monkeys willing to do your every bidding. Also, if more then 500 monkeys write comments i’m pretty sure one of them makes some sense.

Because having your comment section run by a company seated in the US that may or may not do God-knows-what with the data is something some people are not comfortable with.

What data though? What I say in a comment? My comments aren’t really classified data. And I can’t remember Disqus asking for any personal details when I signed up to it, so I don’t get the issue. Oh sorry, I have the country I live in listen on my Disqus account, and they know my email address. But hell, a lot of people know my email address and which country I live in, again it’s not classified data.

Personal data isn’t classified for most people, that doesn’t mean that some people want theirs to be readily available for corporations to do with as they please. Having a bunch of IP-addresses connected to an email-address can be worth quite a bit of money to some people, and whether you like it or not this data will be cross-checked through multiple data sets. And suddenly data you don’t want to be available for the whole world to know will be readily available for the world to know. Of course there are measures to prevent this to some degree, and the… Read more »

It’s also a lot slower and glitchier, but perhaps that’s just me.

Okay, thanks to pomcomic on Twitter, the comments have their own background now. That’s one issue resolved!

Hallelujah, I am no longer anonymous! I can now take credit for the pointless drivel I spend hours piecing together. Jim should be flattered by the effort taken, not the end result.

I don’t get this. The previous commenting section always gave you the option of who you signed in as and where to link your name to – you never had to be anonymous unless you chose it. That way was far more convenient to link people to my website than this way, since I can only sign in as my google account or facebook account – it just seems far more limiting.

I used to like Disqus, but it became a confusing mess when its tendrils started reaching everywhere. I used to log in to Disqus through my old LiveJournal account, without having an official Disqus account and password. They started dropping LiveJournal access. They still had all my LJ comments; I just couldn’t claim them. And some forums would leave me logged into Disqus through LJ, still able to post, until the cookies expired. Then there was the Destructoid account merger with Disqus. That was never straightened out for me. Destructoid’s account was merged with my LiveJournal access Disqus account, the… Read more »

Disqus is banned by Ghostery (a privacy enhancing browser addon) for collecting PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and sharing it with 3rd parties (see https://apps.ghostery.com/en/apps/disqus).
No one probably cares but I (and maybe a few more people :)) will no longer be commenting (nor reading comments) on The Jimquisition.
