Dynasty Warriors 9 – The Worst Dynasty Warriors Game Ever Made (Jimpressions)

Dynasty Warriors 9 is an absolute mistake. The open world actively ruins the flow of the game, the new combat system is a homogenizing step back, and as for what they DID to Zhang He…

Make no mistake about it, this is the worst Dynasty Warriors game of them all, at least as far as mainline entries go.

If I want to play a Dynasty Warriors game, I want the main character to be a total sociopath. And..and.. his companions can be a child molester and a cannibal! And his sister can have incestuous feelings for him! And the game can end with a really hard rhythm game that has nothing to do with anything that came previously! Yeah!

I’ve had a weird realization, thinking about the video that I’d watched the night before. The gameplay that Jim showcased… Barring the scale itself of the game, it looks just like any of his garbage game videos. Koei has managed to create, as the next entry of one of its most profitable franchises, a game that looks like a larger scale version of a janky, half-finished asset flip. The boring empty landscape… Models that look like they were just randomly slapped together… Animals that just stand in place as you shoot them to death… Knocking an officer off of a… Read more »

Jim, seeing how this is the only way of communicating with your fans, i would like to debate you on this topic, the part where you run straight to the enemy officer, ignoring minor enemies and dispatching the enemy officer easily is not a problem exclusive to this game, you can do that is pretty much every musou game ever, my question here is why did you brought that up as a negative, when you were ignoring it in the past? look up the reviews on youtube, and you’ll see a very polarizing opinion about this game, people first playing… Read more »

So, a review for the game on Digitally Downloaded website has given it 100%…5-stars, basically the best, touching perfection. Now usually I can understand everything is subjective and these are always varying opinions, but this is the first time I looked at a review and instantly thought “wait, no, something isn’t right here. Is this the same product?”
It’s like 3000 words long, so go knock yourselves out 😉

My only experience with Dynary Warriors is watching Jim play them on various vidieos. But even to *my* eyes, this doesn’t look like the previous installments. Also, I started playing Witcher 2 last night, and I’ve got no more than the first inn into it, but already the world there looks more full of stuff – on my ride from the game start to the inn there appeared to be stuff I could have stopped to deal with. Comparing that to Jim’s few minutes of empty riding, it’s quite shocking.

My hope was back when it was announced (the preview footage very quickly confirmed the worse) that going to ‘open world’ would have meant maybe taking the battle structures and making it more akin to running around in a Mount & Blade modded to have really huge troop numbers in play at once. Just opening up the areas so bigger units could be put in, battles still working in their appropriate stages and the like but opening things up more to increase the spectacle, reduce the corridor feel and make the terrain, whilst still essentially a cartoon rather than realistic,… Read more »

General consensus seems that this is the worst in the series, with some reviewers saying if this is the franchise’s future, then they’d prefer to go back to the past.
Save for one reviewer who claims it’s the “best in series” and I am seriously wondering what he is on.

Thanks for the heads up, I was curious about this one. I miss the CAW Story campaigns from I think either 4 and 5.

To get everyone up to speed. A quick summary of all Dynasty Warrior games from start to finish. —– Dynasty Warriors 1 : A 1 on 1 beat-em-up that nobody has ever heard of, seen or played, ever. —– Dynasty Warriors 2 : The truly next generation 3D scrolling beat-em-up on the PS2, open world battles of thousands of enemies, gave birth to many of the features we all see and love in most warriors games to date. A truly classic and a killer app for the PS2 at the time. —– Dynasty Warriors 3 : Split screen coop, hundreds… Read more »

Oh joy, it’s DW6 all over again. What is it with this franchise being unable to make a gen transition with any grace?

I was looking forward to a new Dynasty Warriors game with some genuine thought behind it. DW6 was rubbish, DW7 mainly just undid the stuff that made the sixth one unpopular and DW8 was just DW7 again. But this… Boy, am I glad I didn’t buy this mess of an Steam Greenlight submission packaged as a professional product.

Also this game came out on my birthday. Does Tecmo Koei think that little of me that they’d do this when I wouldn’t have even been that mad if they had released DW7 AGAIN with tidier graphics and new maps?

This perfectly encapsulates how I feel about Breath of the Wild. I was optimistic when it was announced. I began to suspect something would be off as I learned more about it. I played it, a lot, looking for something good that tied it mechanically to older Zeldas which I love for the mechanics, dungeon design, and narrative structure. As the game itself wore me down, and the internet furor raged against Jim and we had to deal with all the fanboys and apologists, I cared increasingly less. After one particularly disappointing moment I put the game down in utter… Read more »

I could see an interesting game with an open world dynasty warriors, two big dynamic armies wandering this massive space, too big to fight at the start of the game, they’d send out raiding parties you could defeat or aid that changed how the big armies moved across the world, or occasionally attack fortresses with one of a variety of huge overblown siege weapons and there was a set way of defeating each kind of siege weapon in little stages, like clearing away the troops around the siege weapon, then fighting your way up the seige towers etc… and you… Read more »

Buy the upcoming Hyrule Warriors for the Switch. May be a port of an old game, but it’d make a good palate cleanser after this.

Don’t do Open World, unless there’s a purpose for the open world. And be sure to fill it with something. I had hope for the open world planets in ME Andromeda, and the first world almost got it. But several of the planets were just big open spaces with nothing interesting happening in them. Some areas of Breath of the Wild were empty of anthing unique or entertaining. Oh, areas were lovingly crafted, but then all you find is more bokoblin camps and shrines. You climb a vantage point in AC, you’re going to see a breathtaking view and something… Read more »

You know if they wanted to do an “open world” Dynasty Warriors they should of expanded on the Empire DW spinoff cash-in nonsense. You have a basic ROTK game maybe based on one of the ones from the PS2 era that let you play as any officer instead of only the big 3 kingdoms but the battles are Dynasty Warriors stages. The shit you do in the strategy layer impacts the battle with different units, abilities and events that can trigger and maybe, just maybe, the AI actually functions in this game instead of standing around like mindless mooks. I… Read more »

My intuition says this will likely get metabombed. And it would actually be justified, like with Battlefront 2.
