the game actually never mentions permadeath, the wording is very vague and ‘in universe’ it’s more of a warning to senua then the player, an irrational warning at that. as for the score, I reckon you should have just went without a score this time, I love that you gave it a 7 (it certainly deserves the praise) but I feel like you are in a situation where giving a score is either disingenuous to yourself, or is unfair to the game. a ‘pick up the game it’s good, but watch out for this nasty bug” recommendations seems like a… Read more »

Wow, I have been watching many vids but only now did I learn this site exists… Nevertheless, on-topic, arithmetic scores are flawed. Especially the 0 to 10 “grade” ones. I always throw a great laugh when I see an 6.8 or some shit, like seriously, could that person describe me exactly what difference it has with 6.9 or 7.0?! Not to derail, I think you either should score 0 to 4 or 5, or preferably not at all, because people are biased from the previously known scores.(Since an 7/10 means meh game nowadays…) Kudos for handling the situation optimally after… Read more »

Honestly, Jim, I thought you might have been fine just not scoring the game. A general description “it’s very, very good but I couldn’t beat it and therefore can’t give it a fair score” would have been acceptable. Also, are you going to go back and play through the game again to complete it now?

Hey Jim,

Good review. If you get the chance check out Raycevick on youtube. He just did a video on the game. Worth a watch.

Cheers.

Jim, when you do one of these video reviews, could you please also post the text version here on your website? Not everyone has good hearing. I would imagine you already have the script in text form unless you’re improvising each review during recording.

Great review and didn’t see the 1 but dan s of ign was slaughtered when he reviewed low to game breaking glitches of prey. I respect that choice as for him and you it didn’t work . I also respect that 7 hrs is a lot of fun. Is still be mad though.

Jim did you contact the devs first to see if they could help? Or have you done so since to help fix it….

So, your review doesn’t say if you played on the PC or PS4 but if it’s PC and you’re interested in not having to redo the entire thing from the start to enjoy the end (which is still a fair way away, mind you), I saved my save file just before you have to run through that waterfall. That permadeath thingy scared me away so I kept backing up my file after every 2 or 3 fights. While I don’t mind difficulty, if there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s wasting my time on having to redo a whole game… Read more »

Okay, so I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while, because I am genuinely curious and genuinely want to play this game. As someone with psychosis however I’m not very sure on how this game will affect me. I understand that the best way to play it is with headphones, and from the little bit I’ve seen from the video I almost feel like it will be too much, but the question I have focuses around how is what Jim has shown in this video in relation to the rest of the content? Is this average, on the… Read more »

Can I be so rude to ask how does it present …your condition and how do you cope? Does it effect relationships etc. I ask as I have an issue which does and I’m struggling .

I haven’t played this particular game, nor do I have psychosis. I am however an avid consumer of some pretty dark media and I do have my own demons to deal with, so I can offer you some somewhat generic advice: If you have “good” and “bad” days, play this on good days, when your psyche can take some buggery without you being hurt for it. Additionally, play it for a short amount of time at once – if this game is about 10 hours, maybe an hour or so per sitting, with days in between if necessary to recover.… Read more »

the game varies from soft almost soothing whispers to litterally screaming in your ear, there are also certain voices that croak and bellow which can be uncomfortable. while some of these are ‘jump scares’ others are pretty obvious when they’ll happen, so you can mute, and worst case you could even play on mono sound by forcing it through a single speaker if you wanted. you know yourself better then anyone, and if you think this game will cause problems for you, I’d recomend steering clear, or at least doing more research/looking up a let’s play

Wasn’t sure about this but now that I’ve seen your review I’ve decided to give it a go when payday comes. I love everything I’ve seen so far about it and I don’t even enjoy third person action games.

Four words and a number: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. After putting so many hours into the game’s sidequests and activities, I made it to a part in the main story where you had to talk to a guy through a door in the Riften sewers. The conversation just wouldn’t start. I was stuck there, with no way to progress at all. After some searching, I learned that other people who had this issue had to fix the bug themselves, which either involved using some console trickery, or a third-party application to unpack the voices from a BSA file. That… Read more »

First time commenter Jim. Just a point that I hope is taken into consideration as the site moves forward. But as a forward deployed sailor in the Navy, video reviews are incredibly difficult for us to load (bandwidth underway being absolutely miserable, if available at all). I love your particular style of review. If anything, could you post the text of the review along with the video? Love your stuff man.

I’ve been intrigued by this game for a while and very much intending to get it now. I’ve had a game breaking moment only once which completely soured me on the whole experience and I completely understand your initial anger. It was with the original Dead Island. I was locked into a escort quest, died and the game picked up almost right before I died thanks to the autosave, but without restoring any of the items and weapons I’d used. So I had to start each attempt at a huge disadvantage. I gave up after around ten attempts and never… Read more »

So once they patch out the gamebreaking bug you could say it goes up to an 8? Or maybe even a 9 if the ending sticks the landing? Hopefully you can give us your opinion of the ending if you get past that bug.

All things considered I think a seven is a fair score. If nothing else at least people will know to look out for that until hopefully the devs can patch it.

I’m going to get this game. Eventually. Seriously, I still need to get a bunch of others first. But the idea of playing a character suffering from auditory and visual hallucinations (hallucinations that they went out of their way to research with experts AND the people that suffer from them) is damn interesting. REALLY looking forward to playing this. After Yakuza. Probably.

Off topic, but for members (not guests) with the standard Jimquisition logo, maybe it would look cool to give them the wings as well?

Justin McDaniel

Hey there. I just added the emblem yesterday due to noticing they mostly use circle avatars now, but there’s no good way to add the wings without them looking tiny inside a circle.

Or maybe we’ll just say “guests” haven’t earned their wings yet. Yeah, that sounds more fun then the actual reason. Lol

Really sucks about that glitch thing. I’ve been there, mate – I feel for you. Still, this game definitely looks awesome and I’ll be picking it up for sure. Also, happy to see you doing video reviews. Keep up the great work and thank God for you, sir.

While the subject of psychosis is up, it’s a damn shame Night in the Woods didn’t register on the Jimquisition radar. I’d have loved to see Jim’s opinion of that darling of a game.
