So About That Time I Gave Hellblade A 1/10…

Sometimes you don’t quite consider every facet of something until the thing is done. Unfortunately this was the case with a previously published review for Hellblade.

The review will be back, but given the personally unprecedented situation, I need to think about it more than I initially did.

Just want to say Jim, and you’ve mentioned it before, I really respect commentators that can consider their own correctness and behavior. We need more of this in future. Big fan, SVM

i agree with your 1/10 score. and your torch glitch is not the only one game breaking bug in this game there are more.

I still remember playing one of the Terminator games on the PS2 or the PS3 a while back. Forget which one. Anyway, within 5 minutes of the game starting, I ran into a glitch where every time it tried to load the autosave, the game crashed.
Haven’t played the game since.
I wouldn’t blame anyone for giving a game a low score over a game breaking glitch.

You should probably stick to your initial 1/10 score. The game left you in a state of rage and extreme disappointment. That sounds like a 1/10 game to me. Sometimes it’s okay to admit that a singular moment ruined an entire experience for you because clearly it did. Even if your experience is wildly different from most players, it was still your experience and you can only base a review off of that. It sounds like your letting the criticism of your review eat away at the confidence of your position. You’ve cooled off now but consider the fact that… Read more »

While missing the torch was user error a game should never be able to autosave in a state that renders the game unwinnable, especially when said autosave is the only way the game saves. That is beyond simple player error and down to flawed game design. Hopefully that patch it.

Game broken…even for 1 copy isn’t ok. You should.not be able to break it. That’s the games fault 100%.
1 /10 is fair but….speak to devs and when they patch it rereview it.
That’s all you can do.
Or give it a.score for what you played.

Jim’s the man.

Well, this is the challenge of the medium. It doesn’t matter how powerful a narrative in a video game is, the game has to work, right? The interactivity is the experience, but if the interactivity is busted somehow, what’s left? A YouTube video where I can watch someone else interact? If I’m reading a powerful book about mental illness, and the final chapter is missing in my copy because of a publisher’s error, or I dropped it in the toilet, getting it all nice and soggy, I can just run out and buy another copy, or go to the library… Read more »

Combat is fun but puzzles and running around is not, i like the game but i just got really bored after 2 hours of game play trying to find the puzzle. I am not saying its a bad game the graphics are amazing, but its just not for everyone.

I disagree with the 1/10. That’s it. Everything else… you’re on point, sir.

I’m curious if Jim considered restarting the game? It’s not that long unless the idea of replaying the game is a negative. Which then I would say doesn’t garner a coveted 8 or 9.

Perhaps a “refused classification” would be in order? I mean, I’d expect anything placed on a ten point scale to be physically beatable, just that anything in the lower half to be less pleasant than an actual physical beating.

Save files are just a feature of the medium.

I’ve encountered similar issues with ffviii and dragon age: origins. DA:O being my favorite video game of all time.

Everyone does stupid stuff when they get mad at 2am. If you don’t feel comfortable revising the score just obstain.

P.S. the footage from this video alone has convinced me to purchase a copy. So there is that.

So really you’ve released an unfinished review that you plan to patch 😉

To anybody defending this game and/or the developer: The developer should’ve caught the bug just from ordinary playtesting. They should’ve asked, “What if the player misses this torch?” You ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS assume the player is going to do something different than what you expect. How often? ALWAYS, because the player has full control over what the character is doing, which means they might not do what you expect.

I’m reminded of Half-Life 1 in the “On a rail” section. An autosave captured a situation where a soldier had thrown a grenade, set to explode in my face, in half a second. So, a permanent cycle of restoring and getting killed immediately. Funny, yes, but also enraging.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain broke at the end of the game for me. I couldn’t go back and couldn’t go forward. I never beat it. I still look back fondly on the game though and think of it as one of my favorite PS1 games and probably in my top 100 of all time. Still sucked though.

Considering no other review I’ve seen thus far mentions this bug or has given the game lower than a 6, I’d say your credibility as a legitimate reviewer is definitely in question by giving the game a 1 out of 10.

Just for my 2 cents. Given what you just described…I think a 3/10 would be appropriate. A 1 is too extreme and I’m glad you reconsidered. But your policy of “review the game you have” is spot on. This kind of bug should never have been in the game at all period. And… Now for a controversial thing to say…I realize what this game is trying to do regarding its themes around mental illness, gender, it’s play on the AAA paradigm and it’s “special mechanic,” ….but because of this I honestly question how forgiving and praising the “reviewer community” is… Read more »
