How To Not F2P Like A Total Wanker (The Jimquisition)

Sometimes, independent developers ask my advice on certain practices. I can only say what I like, but I’ll say that for free.

Here are the clearest cut ways to avoid being a wanker in the freemium market, as one dev was curious to know. I think this happens to be quite a fine episode.

Speaking of wankers though, we also gotta talk about Randy.

Acceptable microtransactions:
1)Outfits: No stat boosts. No random colors. No random style. Must be permanent. (Looking at you, Nexon).
2)Cosmetic companion. Can’t do any damage, but will gather loot.
3)Cosmetics; Hair style, tattoo, & dye packs, like what RIFT has,
4)Mount skins that change the appearance of a mount only.

I’m confused. Did this randy chap actually sit in an interview and defend aliens colonial marines? I mean…its a punchline…a cautionary tale…a warning to others about greed and avarice and laziness and mismanagement.

Dear Jimstitution,

I had been wondering when Duke du H’ardcore was coming back and to find out he’s getting his own show is like finding out Jesus is real after all. I, for one, have a hard-on for YOU, good sir. Unwarranted generosity does that to me.

Also, what the FUCK is with the Avatar thing? I created a Gravatar account and cannot for the life of me figure out how to link this account with that account so I can just have a fucking picture of fucking Waluigi as my avatar.

I really don’t understand how Warframe (aka Grindframe, and Warfarm) keeps getting referenced as doing F2P right by people. After I had sadly played it for some 400 hours, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that it handled micro-transactions like a browser/mobile game, so combined with my other issues with it, I quit. I’ve also spoken to many others that felt the same way, many would be excited by it at first, but the grind, pressure to buy stuff, bugs, and other matters cause seemingly most people to eventually quit. Want to build something? OK, either wait potentially days to… Read more »

After it becoming known to me that there was a recent Randy Pitchfork interview – How did I not realize that there would have been a Jimquisition episode forthcoming – Should have called it “Steptoe & fucking sterling Son” LOL!

I’ve paid for microtransactions in two games: Marvel Heroes 2015 ($20), and Pokemon Picross ($35). And while I confess I did feel a *little* coerced with Picross (it was advertised as “free to start” not free to play”, if I recall) it’s still a good enough title that it was worth the money. Marvel Heroes, on the other hand, had a marvelous MT system, and after hundreds of hours, I didn’t feel for even a second that gameplay or progression suffered in any way. And I’d like to point out the concept of “the less I feel I need to,… Read more »

Hi, Jim. What you call “avarice”, in Economics is known as “loss of anticipated / potential earnings”. But, yes, it’s avarice. Still, you got to understand that, for a company, a game is an investment. It’s a huge commitment of time and money (that is, resources) and they want (not need, want) to recoup as much as they can from it because that’s considered to be good economics. Of course there are more morally acceptable business models, but think of it as the mainly two possible business types a shop or restaurant could have: the first one, a place that… Read more »

Is it okay to admit, I do think Jim goes a little overboard with his Randy Pitchford thing. I mean I get it, Gearbox earned a rep for themselves with two nearly consecutive stinkers in the form of Duke Nukem Forever and Colonial Marines, the latter of which was wrapped up in a truly scummy bit of misleading advertising which they continue to use to sell the game to this day, but… Why Pitchford specifically? Is it just because he’s in charge of the company in question? That’s sometimes the problem: I can’t be sure how much Jim does actually… Read more »

Yay Drill Queen back for today’s episode and a new spinoff series! That’s all very exciting but Jim, Jim, where’s the new episode of Boglinwatch 2017?

Oh, thank goodness… Randy looks like a doughy, skeevy uncle now. It always tripped me out whenever I saw photos of Randy Pitchford like the one in the video thumbnail here, because he looked just uncannily like my real, actual older brother. It was profoundly uncomfortable for me, but now I don’t have to worry as much about that; my brother’s evil twin has finally morphed into a more honest form. 😀

Having played an embarrassing amount of Maplestory it has been interesting to see how over the years the F2P economy has evolved to be more fair to players. It seems a lot of that kind of free to play game has to adapt to be fair to its users or it won’t get the same kind of audience as a game that does.
