Mafia III‘s PS4 Download Time Is Fucking Ridiculous

[Update: this story has been updated with a progress report following the original article. Check below for details.]

The above drab image is a screenshot of Mafia III‘s “installation” screen. It’s currently at 34%. This image was taken five hours after the game’s purchase from the PlayStation Store.

That’s fucking ridiculous.

After purchasing Mafia III from the PS Store, it downloads and shows up as ready to start on the console’s dashboard. Like so many other lying sack-of-shit games however, it’s not actually ready to play. Barely anything was downloaded the first time around – the alleged “installation” is really a download process for the full game.

Mafia III is not the first game to pull such bollocks – Tecmo Koei games do it all the time – but I’ve never, not once, seen a title take this long. Five hours after it’s been bought, and it’s managed to get just over a quarter of the thing downloaded. If there are any other PS4 games that have taken so long, I’m yet to see them.

I mean, this is seriously fucking ridiculous.

A brief look online reveals this isn’t a one-off situation. Multiple reports from confused and irritated customers reveal Mafia III has a bit of a problem, but weirdly enough it’s not been widely reported.

Mafia III‘s little download struggle appears to be contained to digital downloads. Although the physical disc version naturally requires a silly amount of installing, it’s lightning fast compared to its ethereal counterpart.

I searched around, and it seems that no media outlet has talked about this, despite the complaints being days old and remaining unresolved by 2K Games or Hangar 13 – or Sony, if it’s the fault of the PlayStation Network.

No waves have been made about what is a ridiculous fucking situation, despite it being fucking ridiculous.

Here’s a video of the “installation” running in real-time. As you can see, it’s fucking ridiculous.

Mafia III launched with a number of technical problems, chiefly on PC.

The game was locked at 30 frames-per-second for several days on PC before the developer fixed it this weekend. Other problems include the game not opening, various input detection issues, and unexpected crashes.

Bugs and glitches are reported to riddle the game across all platforms, ranging from funny to severe. Audio issues, stuttering, and texture errors are among the most common.

I’ve downloaded games big and small on consoles, and while it’s never been a particularly speedy procedure, it’s never taken so long that the likelihood of me playing something the day of purchase has sat at almost zero.

For real though… this download time is fucking ridiculous.

[10/11/2016 10:22pm] Update:

It’s been several hours since I first posted this article, and as I prepare to go to sleep, having not played Mafia III today, I figured I’d write up how the “installation” has been going so far.

In the time since posting this article, I was able to download, install, and play a good chunk of Dragon Quest Builders. It’s pretty good so far! Mafia III continued to “install” during Builders‘ entire download and playtime. I’ve also eaten my dinner, watched an old episode of Best of the Worst, published a Greenlight Good Stuff video, and masturbated.

I initially purchased Mafia III at around 1pm. As I write this, it’s 10:22pm. Mafia III‘s “installation” is only 55% complete.

This is the future the so-called AAA videogame industry wants for us.

This isn’t just a problem with the digital version. I bought the physical version (I’ve been doing this a lot more lately what with the 20% Amazon Prime discount on all new release games) and the fucking thing took over an hour to install. I have no idea why, I’ve never encountered anything like it before.

That was a great video you shared with us Jim! I especially loved when the scream from the goat blasted directly into my ears through my headphones!

MAKE CARTRIDGE SYSTEMS GREAT AGAIN! Put it in, power it on AND GAME ON! 😉 (Maybe Nintendo NX will be the saviour of consoles)

I love how comvenient digital download is! I can buy a game at RRP and only 2-3 days later its downloaded and I can play without the onerous task of taking the 2 steps to my PS4 to put the disc in.
Certainly beats buying a disc from Tesco on the way home from work for less than RRP and playing it after a whole 2 minutes of installation.

I don’t want to be “that guy”, but wow, how easy and convenient consoles are, aren’t they? XD

Mafia III Download Watch 2016!

This! This is why we need physical copies. Now image someone with less than optimal internet connection. Those people will never be able to play these games because they can’t be bothered to wait days for an installation to finish.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they started selling faster downloads as DLC.

No this is the future Sony wants because they’re too fucking lazy to properly update PSN so it doesn’t take for-fucking-ever to download shit.

Day One patches/updates are a crutch. This is what happens when games are released before they are ready.

This is a trash game, a trash port, and a scam. XCOM 2 released in the same condition earlier this year, with ridiculous bugs in the final version. It was CLEARLY in a beta state at release, and even now it is not without problems.

Seems this is 2K’s MO lately, and i am worried about Civ VI. We all know it’s going to be totally crippled to sell half of the game in future DLC’s, but let’s hope it is at least playable at launch.

The PC version of this game seems very iffy. I’m getting 35-45 fps while driving on an R9 390 (it’s pretty much consistent 60 fps indoors though), and none of the graphical options seem to have much of an impact on performance (setting everything from high to medium makes basically no difference). The gameplay itself it also very clunky imo, while the gunplay (which is of the VERY generic cover-based shooting variety) is strangely unsatisfying. I think I’m going to refund it (thank you Steam).

Happened to me as well, but once I restarted my PS4, it went very quickly.

Jim, for the sake of science, journalism, and not relying on random internet commenters for info, you need to buy this on Xbox and compare how long it takes.

Literally the first time I’ve heard of Dragon Quest Builders…. And it’s PSN exclusive. I’m gonna go cry in a corner now.

Since you’re talking about very personal things right now, perhaps you could share your urination and fecalization schedule, just for the sake of completeness.

Well, it sounds like you are having a wonderful experience so far. You managed to do a lot of things thanks to the game, everything except playing the actual game. But Seriously, that is a horrible experience.

Dragon Quest Builders is a game that I am hesitant in picking up. I think I might try it out at least.

“watched an old episode of Best of the Worst,”

Please tell me it was the Double Down one. Or one of the Wheels of the Worst.

At least it isn’t as bad as Final Fantasy XI on the PS2. Patching and installing that from a fresh copy took entire days.

Oh no, a game takes more than five hours to install? BOO HOO. Come download anything here in Brazil and then you can get salty about download times.

Though in all seriousness, I’ll wait until this game either gets its shit sorted out through patches or something before getting it. I got a whole backlog to catch up to anyway. I liked Mafia II, but there’s no way I’m gonna get Mafia III before Doom and Dark Souls III.
