Mafia III‘s PS4 Download Time Is Fucking Ridiculous

[Update: this story has been updated with a progress report following the original article. Check below for details.]

The above drab image is a screenshot of Mafia III‘s “installation” screen. It’s currently at 34%. This image was taken five hours after the game’s purchase from the PlayStation Store.

That’s fucking ridiculous.

ma1

After purchasing Mafia III from the PS Store, it downloads and shows up as ready to start on the console’s dashboard. Like so many other lying sack-of-shit games however, it’s not actually ready to play. Barely anything was downloaded the first time around – the alleged “installation” is really a download process for the full game.

Mafia III is not the first game to pull such bollocks – Tecmo Koei games do it all the time – but I’ve never, not once, seen a title take this long. Five hours after it’s been bought, and it’s managed to get just over a quarter of the thing downloaded. If there are any other PS4 games that have taken so long, I’m yet to see them.

I mean, this is seriously fucking ridiculous.

A brief look online reveals this isn’t a one-off situation. Multiple reports from confused and irritated customers reveal Mafia III has a bit of a problem, but weirdly enough it’s not been widely reported.

Mafia III‘s little download struggle appears to be contained to digital downloads. Although the physical disc version naturally requires a silly amount of installing, it’s lightning fast compared to its ethereal counterpart.

I searched around, and it seems that no media outlet has talked about this, despite the complaints being days old and remaining unresolved by 2K Games or Hangar 13 – or Sony, if it’s the fault of the PlayStation Network.

No waves have been made about what is a ridiculous fucking situation, despite it being fucking ridiculous.

Here’s a video of the “installation” running in real-time. As you can see, it’s fucking ridiculous.

Mafia III launched with a number of technical problems, chiefly on PC.

The game was locked at 30 frames-per-second for several days on PC before the developer fixed it this weekend. Other problems include the game not opening, various input detection issues, and unexpected crashes.

Bugs and glitches are reported to riddle the game across all platforms, ranging from funny to severe. Audio issues, stuttering, and texture errors are among the most common.

I’ve downloaded games big and small on consoles, and while it’s never been a particularly speedy procedure, it’s never taken so long that the likelihood of me playing something the day of purchase has sat at almost zero.

For real though… this download time is fucking ridiculous.

[10/11/2016 10:22pm] Update:

It’s been several hours since I first posted this article, and as I prepare to go to sleep, having not played Mafia III today, I figured I’d write up how the “installation” has been going so far.

In the time since posting this article, I was able to download, install, and play a good chunk of Dragon Quest Builders. It’s pretty good so far! Mafia III continued to “install” during Builders‘ entire download and playtime. I’ve also eaten my dinner, watched an old episode of Best of the Worst, published a Greenlight Good Stuff video, and masturbated.

I initially purchased Mafia III at around 1pm. As I write this, it’s 10:22pm. Mafia III‘s “installation” is only 55% complete.

This is the future the so-called AAA videogame industry wants for us.

This isn’t just a problem with the digital version. I bought the physical version (I’ve been doing this a lot more lately what with the 20% Amazon Prime discount on all new release games) and the fucking thing took over an hour to install. I have no idea why, I’ve never encountered anything like it before.

MAKE CARTRIDGE SYSTEMS GREAT AGAIN! Put it in, power it on AND GAME ON! 😉 (Maybe Nintendo NX will be the saviour of consoles)

I have high hopes for that, not so much the NX, but rather the return of the cartridge. Physical data storage devices have a lot of pros: cheap, faster data transmision than optical storage solutions… I think ther is a good chance that they will become relevant not only in the console market but also the PC market. They may launch some cartridge reader which substitutes an USB 3.0 port or something nad BAM!, plug and play, all the benefits of an SSD without wasting storage space in your computer. It may save physical copies of games in their losing… Read more »

I love how comvenient digital download is! I can buy a game at RRP and only 2-3 days later its downloaded and I can play without the onerous task of taking the 2 steps to my PS4 to put the disc in.
Certainly beats buying a disc from Tesco on the way home from work for less than RRP and playing it after a whole 2 minutes of installation.

Yeah, 99% of the time they are easier and more convenient than PCs and they always will be. It is the very nature of a fucking console, smarmy one.

So what makes them easier and more convenient?
I can buy a game on steam, have it download in generally under 10 minutes and be off and away.
The main difference I see is I can change settings if I desire, there’s nothing about this that makes it harder or more troublesome for me since I generally leave the game on medium settings.

So i take it you payed too much for your machine, it being way more powerful than what you’re using, if blindly trusting the ‘default’ settings to not be a problem without checking the ‘minimum/required specs’ Or are you checking those specs, proving the point? Also you were fortunate (or picky) enough to not hit any of the ‘requires the following mods to become playable’-titles? And while, since the ‘pc that wants to be a console’-xbox and ‘console that wants to be a pc’-playstation became ‘considered representative’ of consoles, they indeed lost their: ‘even in your example, consoles are still… Read more »

Seriously, buying a cheap PC from Best Buy is a better deal than getting either console.

My PC was 800 bucks and it can’t run Uncharted or Bloodborne.

Oh well, Im sure in 30 years I’ll be able to emulate them at 12 frames per second.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, you may have done something wrong then. (I’m assuming your pc is relatively recent of course)

For 800 euro’s you should be able to buy a pretty good PC, which should at least be able to run those games, even if it’s not amazingly fast or pretty.

Also, how did you get bloodborne on pc?

This is a trash game, a trash port, and a scam. XCOM 2 released in the same condition earlier this year, with ridiculous bugs in the final version. It was CLEARLY in a beta state at release, and even now it is not without problems.

Seems this is 2K’s MO lately, and i am worried about Civ VI. We all know it’s going to be totally crippled to sell half of the game in future DLC’s, but let’s hope it is at least playable at launch.

The PC version of this game seems very iffy. I’m getting 35-45 fps while driving on an R9 390 (it’s pretty much consistent 60 fps indoors though), and none of the graphical options seem to have much of an impact on performance (setting everything from high to medium makes basically no difference). The gameplay itself it also very clunky imo, while the gunplay (which is of the VERY generic cover-based shooting variety) is strangely unsatisfying. I think I’m going to refund it (thank you Steam).

XionEternum
Guest
XionEternum

I’ll bet the outdoors performance issue is due to lack of multi-threaded optimization. I.E: It’s running on one or two cores and they can’t keep up with the exterior graphical demand. View distance is usually the performance killer in such cases, but if what you say is true then even that can’t fix it.

My CPU isn’t great – I’m on an i5 760 OCed to 3.5GHz (all cores) and 4.0 GHz turbo. 16 GB of DDR3 1600. I dunno, DOOM ran just fine. So did GTA V. So did Rise of the Tomb Raider. Mafia III, not so great.

MSI Afterburner can help log CPU usage to validate my point. As I have no intention of buying the game until a significant price drop; I’m not in a position to do so.

Even buying a physical copy these days means a ton of downloading, even from day 1.

Not to mention if a game has had frequent big updates, you have to redownload them all again if, god forbid, you delete data or upgrade the hardrive on PS4.

Doom had a friggin 23GB update when I had to reinstall it recently. I haven’t even started on Fallout 4 and all the DLC.
