Mafia III‘s PS4 Download Time Is Fucking Ridiculous

[Update: this story has been updated with a progress report following the original article. Check below for details.]

The above drab image is a screenshot of Mafia III‘s “installation” screen. It’s currently at 34%. This image was taken five hours after the game’s purchase from the PlayStation Store.

That’s fucking ridiculous.

ma1

After purchasing Mafia III from the PS Store, it downloads and shows up as ready to start on the console’s dashboard. Like so many other lying sack-of-shit games however, it’s not actually ready to play. Barely anything was downloaded the first time around – the alleged “installation” is really a download process for the full game.

Mafia III is not the first game to pull such bollocks – Tecmo Koei games do it all the time – but I’ve never, not once, seen a title take this long. Five hours after it’s been bought, and it’s managed to get just over a quarter of the thing downloaded. If there are any other PS4 games that have taken so long, I’m yet to see them.

I mean, this is seriously fucking ridiculous.

A brief look online reveals this isn’t a one-off situation. Multiple reports from confused and irritated customers reveal Mafia III has a bit of a problem, but weirdly enough it’s not been widely reported.

Mafia III‘s little download struggle appears to be contained to digital downloads. Although the physical disc version naturally requires a silly amount of installing, it’s lightning fast compared to its ethereal counterpart.

I searched around, and it seems that no media outlet has talked about this, despite the complaints being days old and remaining unresolved by 2K Games or Hangar 13 – or Sony, if it’s the fault of the PlayStation Network.

No waves have been made about what is a ridiculous fucking situation, despite it being fucking ridiculous.

Here’s a video of the “installation” running in real-time. As you can see, it’s fucking ridiculous.

Mafia III launched with a number of technical problems, chiefly on PC.

The game was locked at 30 frames-per-second for several days on PC before the developer fixed it this weekend. Other problems include the game not opening, various input detection issues, and unexpected crashes.

Bugs and glitches are reported to riddle the game across all platforms, ranging from funny to severe. Audio issues, stuttering, and texture errors are among the most common.

I’ve downloaded games big and small on consoles, and while it’s never been a particularly speedy procedure, it’s never taken so long that the likelihood of me playing something the day of purchase has sat at almost zero.

For real though… this download time is fucking ridiculous.

[10/11/2016 10:22pm] Update:

It’s been several hours since I first posted this article, and as I prepare to go to sleep, having not played Mafia III today, I figured I’d write up how the “installation” has been going so far.

In the time since posting this article, I was able to download, install, and play a good chunk of Dragon Quest Builders. It’s pretty good so far! Mafia III continued to “install” during Builders‘ entire download and playtime. I’ve also eaten my dinner, watched an old episode of Best of the Worst, published a Greenlight Good Stuff video, and masturbated.

I initially purchased Mafia III at around 1pm. As I write this, it’s 10:22pm. Mafia III‘s “installation” is only 55% complete.

This is the future the so-called AAA videogame industry wants for us.

The thing is, the game is already downloaded. This is the installation of said download.

Actually, the initial PSN download is the “downloader tool”. This kind of software is small and easier to distribute, as well as not sending data through a third-party app (like PS Store or Steam) since it is a first-party app. Very common in MMOs and I’m pretty sure it isn’t a foreign concept to games released outside of Valve’s choke-hold on the market. Jim explained the basic premise in the article, and it could be a publisher’s server issue and not actually PSN. Back in the PS2/360 era I played FFXI, and downloading a patch Day 1 was just asking… Read more »

For some games the download is an installer only with the majority of the download happening during the installation. Sleezy way to design it but we are talking about video game companies.

Last of Us PS4 version came bundled with my PS4, and took 4 DAYS to download. Most of that for the horrendous, waste of time multiplayer mode I never played once. Admittedly I was running off an internet plan a decade old at that point, but it was still ridiculous.

File sizes continue to grow as well as the space required to store/install them.
If the Scorpio is the beast MS is claiming and given the push for VR and 4k and many people having less than stellar connections, I don’t think download times are going to get better. Or maybe next gen the ”power of the cloud” will actually mean something.

One that gives more time for masturbation while waiting for installation. Who can complain about that? /s

Weird how some games can have different download speeds like that. It can’t be the developer’s doing though, can it? Surely they have no control in how smooth the PSN network can deal with these things? Anyway, what I usually do for these bullshit games that give you their own install screen to waste your time watching, is close the game and let the full download continue from the notification menu. It seems to take a little less long. But I haven’t bought this game yet, and even when I do it’ll be a glorious physical copy that can be… Read more »

Whats up Jim you have been aiming at Sony a lot of late and some of its been a bit petty your PS4 downloading slow is not ground breaking news just stick it into rest mode as it downloads it helps and do something else your a busy guy your find something to do.

Sony’s been pretty shitty lately, probably because they got big heads over winning the console war early this gen. Just like Microsoft and Nintendo got big heads last gen, and Sony played nice guy to catch up from the PS3 being grossly overpriced. Thing is, Sony ended pretty strong at the end of the PS3 gen, while Microsoft stagnated and Nintendo struggled to come back from the ocean of shovelware the Wii created. Now Microsoft is edging to make up for its disastrous launch, while Sony obliviously produces irritation after irritation (Nintendo kind of fucked off elsewhere to do their… Read more »

The thing is its not really a console war as all the platforms are doing very different things so Sony doing VR MS is going into 4K but they still got to show it to us and Nintendo is doing something .
It’s no longer which is the best but which will serves your gaming tastes and needs .

Finding something else to do or having your activities planned around a game installation is already an inconvenience we have to put up with with ‘modern gaming’, but there’s really not an excuse for it to take literal hours to install. Not download, INSTALL.

Shill much? I own all the consoles and a few gaming PC’s. I have no bias towards anything as I am a gamer and I like to play games regardless of the platform they are on. I clarify this because, due to your posts I’ve seen so far, you’ll immediately try to label me as an MS fanboy. In reality I am calling you out for being what you are. A shill at worst and a fanboy at best while also being extremely stupid for perpetuating a “system war” argument as if this is the 90’s and we’re all young… Read more »

Stop talking bollocks and labelling people
It was not an attack on any one or any type of fanboying .

I was pointing out a fact of history a general comment.
So calm down and stop jumping to conclusions or should I label you a troll ,fanboy or what ever .
assumption is the mother all fuck ups .

I was also pointing out that no one remembers the good stuff the games industry does just the bad .
Its good to remember good stuff as we are meant to be enjoying video games.
An apology should be posted below.

Mess-ups and shady behavior do not become okay just because the company was ‘decent’ beforehand. I understand your sentiment when people are threatening to swear off Sony or Rockstar completely, but your “Oh you’ve forgotten how nice they were a few months ago” argument just isn’t appropriate when people are specifically talking about THIS incident. Oh, and don’t try to wave off criticism with inherently flawed arguments like “aren’t video games meant to be about fun”. While I”m not accusing you of being anything, ridiculously weak attempts of diverting attention from the topic at hand are the hallmarks of a… Read more »

But heres the be all and end ok Jim had a problem with game instead of contacting the Dev or PlayStation support or waiting like a normal person would he went to Internet and made a story out of it . I understand that Sony and MS are a business and it’s easy to slip down unpopular ways of making money or having critics to lead people down a way of thinking thats not true . If companies made money the way critics or we told them to they all go bust and we would have no games industry. Their… Read more »

“Jim had a problem with game instead of contacting the Dev or PlayStation support or waiting like a normal person would he went to Internet and made a story out of it .” Because he’s not their QA tester? Sorry, but it’s not Jim’s responsibility to ask them politely to fix an issue. “I understand that Sony and MS are a business etc. etc.” That’s true, but it works the other way: the customer has to look out for the customer too. It’s not my job to give a shit if a company has to make a shitty installation system… Read more »

I thanked them at the time. In the present, they’re annoying me. I’m not going to thank them for what they did months ago, when I dislike their current behavior. It’d be like patting my dog on the head for nonstop jumping on me because she was a good dog yesterday. Also, as a faceless corporate entity Sony doesn’t really need or want our thanks, just our money. And I won’t keep giving money to a badly behaved company for long if I can help it (see me ditching Microsoft after being an Xbox owner for two gaming generations).

they dont even bother compressing pc games anymore, everything went from 8 gig to 50 in a few months its insane. the least they could do is let you choose what languages to install rather than shoving them all on, that would save a tonne of time and space. its yet another thing that makes copying games superior snce those things have been cutting excess size and using custom installers for years.

Themoonlightwolf1
Guest

There’s a growing trend with games from larger publishers not to bother using any kind of compression on their installers, I’ve noticed this on steam as well as PS4 the most recent example being Mortal Kombat XL which is an 85 GB download on PC I’m lucky enough to live close to an exchange and so have good broadband speed but I dread to think how it is for those with slower speeds or data caps.

question:
Is it ALL PC games getting bigger, or is it mostly studios who normally specialise in console games (think Warner Brothers and Ubisoft as opposed to Bethesda when making your comparison)?

Thanatos
Guest
Thanatos

The only explanation for that is pure laziness or incompetence. It’s not difficult in the slightest to run even simple compression on the package of files to download, even if you just decompress them on the client side and splash them somewhere before you do the actual install.

Jeez. That´s one thing I hate about the new console generation.
Even if you buy a game on a disc these days, you´ve got to expect up to 1,5 hours of installation and patching before you are able to play it, not to talk about the regular updates to both, games and the console. Combined with the ridiculously small hard-drives and the giant hunger for space of each game or update, that´s one great advantages of the last generation, that was lost.

Once again, Steam proves itself superior.

There’s actually an easy way to get around this problem for PlayStation owners: put the console in sleep mode as you download it. Seriously, it makes things go SO much faster.

I only found out about it recently but according to Brad from Giant Bomb, he puts his PS to sleep for about 15 minutes and when he turns it back on the game is ready to go.

That because your using more of the systems processor power to download ,install and play games .

I still prefer physical copies, but I usually end up feeling a little let down when I pop a game in, see it has to install for an hour or two, then download another 2 hours worth of updates. Sort of defeating the purpose of a physical purchase to a degree.

From the sounds of it you’d likely have more fun just watching old Best of the Worst episodes than you would playing Mafia 3 when it finally finishes downloading.

Shame really I loved Mafia 2 and I was cautiously optimistic that this new one might not be trash.
