No Man’s Site

If you tried to visit The Jimquisition Dot Com yesterday, you may have noticed it was unavailable, with any number of errors showing up.

This is because the site was hit with a DDoS attack following the publication of my No Man’s Sky review.

The discourse around No Man’s Sky, it seems, remains as sensible as ever!

sky

At first, the groundswell of traffic as people rushed to read up on one of the most bizarrely overhyped games of all time seemed to legitimately give the site problems, but eventually traffic got so intense the site was manually shut down by the host as a protective measure.

It would later be confirmed that the review served as catalyst for an attack as opposed to just an innocent burst of readers. It took some time to sort it out, since the fact the review ended up getting a ton of linkage on Reddit meant that, indeed, a genuinely huge traffic spike was occurring at the same time.

Anyway, once the problem was finally figured out, I just had to click a few buttons so that people who aren’t me could go ahead and fix it. The site would have been in working order quicker but it needed to be manually restored by people who, again, aren’t me. I’m not good at technical stuff, if you couldn’t tell by now. This is why I pay people.

I’ll leave my general thoughts about the ridiculousness of the behavior surrounding No Man’s Sky in general for an upcoming Jimquisition (you better believe that’ll be a fun one), but suffice to say right now that the attack was incredibly pointless.

As I stated yesterday on social media, this site is ad-free and the review was available on Google Cache, fully readable with no skin off my nose. If anything, all that was accomplished was that the shit I pay for got some use at last.

Ironically, for someone accused of wanting to “censor” people because I sometimes write about social issues, this is far from the first time pissbabies have attempted to actively silence me.

The site’s come under attempted attacks before, ones that have failed, as a result of my writing those aforementioned articles about social stuff. A group of free speech champions once tried to have a Jimquisition episode removed from YouTube because they felt silencing me would be a big win for anti-censorship ideals (I don’t get the logic of that move either). Then of course we have the numerous takedown strikes and legal threats that have come from inane game developers.

I can safely say this is the first time I’ve had people go to so much effort to gag me over a review though.

Sure, I’ve had people lackadaisically threaten me, contact my bosses (when I had them) and suggest I should be fired, or write vast essays speculating on my sex life in comment threads as a result of my criticism, but it wasn’t until I called No Man’s Sky mediocre that I actually had this happen.

If you get that mad over videogame reviews, please, for your own good… take a fucking look at yourselves, okay?

The site’s still a little sluggish as things get back to normal, traffic remains high, and we look into optimizing things, so please excuse any weirdness. One can’t rule out another attempted attack either, so if the site goes down again, you’ll at least know why.

Once again though, for the record, taking this site down for a day really is the most pointless bloody exercise. Doesn’t financially hurt me, and it sure as shit doesn’t shut me up.

That’s a question I’d really like to have answered: How insecure in your own opinions do you have to be in order to attack (in what form whatsoever) someone over not sharing that opinion?

You like NMS? Fine, Jim doesn’t; big deal. Now go play.

(By the way, I just bought the game anyways, because despite having heard a lot of negative points already it still interests me. And even though I am a huge fan of Jim and his work I might still heavily disagree with him – that’s fine.)

Cheers for using my favorite word, “lackadaisical”. And I’m really interested in seeing the Streisand effect of this DDoS.

I have never seen so many sites forgive so much in a game as with this one…
I have read on PCGamer, Polygon and now RPS, and they address each complaint, with an excuse
PCGamer even states ‘The addictive boredom of No Man’s Sky’
WHAT? Why is it only Jim that has been able to say, ‘meh’?

Fanaticism, from greasy neckbeard nerds ddosing websites, to religious zealots chopping off heads, is by far humanity’s worst trait.

Anyone who threw a temper tantrum and DDoS’d your site because of what you said needs to GROW THE FUCK UP.

Its funny how people have the time to attack websites while the game they love so much just came out. Shouldn’t they be enjoying it?

The drama on the aforementioned review seems more interesting than any game footage I’ve watched.

This mindset of somehow connecting own’s self worth to the review scores of a particular game is so, SO bizzare to me. Console wars i (kind of) understand, same goes for early access and kickstarter, as it’s a financial investment. But this? Do those people hate to look foolish after they talked to everyone else how amazing it’s going to be? This must be it, I can’t see any other explanation. This comment might look kind of pointless, but I JUST thought of a potential reason while writing it, might as well leave it for others to see and maybe… Read more »

While this behavior is more or less normal, I’m really curious why THIS game in particular stirred up so much shit. Aside from the “infinity” gimmick, it’s not like it was drastically all that different from many other survival/exploration games.

I have a dream that one day everyone will be able to look at a review they disagree with and go “meh, that’s fine, I still like the game though.”

I just love the irony of it all, fighting censorship by censoring people who voice different opinions than their own.

Wow, just wow. If they cant take the criticism, then they should not put their shit out there. I’m fairly sure you have said the same your self Jim.

In a few years when No Man’s Sky falls to obscurity, you’ll stumble across the game accidentally and laugh.

I was really worried at first when I couldn’t load the website yesterday, but then I remembered that No Man’s Sky just launched, and that you’d be putting up a review of it, and I figured it out before your Twitter page loaded. Gamers are predictable, spiteful little creatures.

Your review was the first to be put on Metacritic, which probably explains why you had a DDoS. Granted, people meta bombed the game too, but your lone 50 score set off the rage of the game’s fans.

The Internet can be really stupid sometimes.

It’s only a matter of time before people who wants to silent you will come for your physical ass instead of a web page. if you will ever be in need of a trained invisible bodyguard ninja watching your back 24/7 (even when you masturbate) give me call, I’m looking for a job.

There are already the standard ‘This is clickbait, written for ad revenue’ comments ‘Go play COD’ one of which was written by someone freely admitted they had never visited the site before or even heard of Jim. So you’re offering analysis but also freely admitting to be 100% ignorant regarding the subject matter you are trying to analyse?

Jim, are you sure this was a ddos attack? Because I remember seeing your review as the only one on Metacritic yesterday. Maybe everyone in the world went to your review yesterday because other reviews were not published, and that fucked up your server.
