If you tried to visit The Jimquisition Dot Com yesterday, you may have noticed it was unavailable, with any number of errors showing up.
This is because the site was hit with a DDoS attack following the publication of my No Man’s Sky review.
The discourse around No Man’s Sky, it seems, remains as sensible as ever!
At first, the groundswell of traffic as people rushed to read up on one of the most bizarrely overhyped games of all time seemed to legitimately give the site problems, but eventually traffic got so intense the site was manually shut down by the host as a protective measure.
It would later be confirmed that the review served as catalyst for an attack as opposed to just an innocent burst of readers. It took some time to sort it out, since the fact the review ended up getting a ton of linkage on Reddit meant that, indeed, a genuinely huge traffic spike was occurring at the same time.
Anyway, once the problem was finally figured out, I just had to click a few buttons so that people who aren’t me could go ahead and fix it. The site would have been in working order quicker but it needed to be manually restored by people who, again, aren’t me. I’m not good at technical stuff, if you couldn’t tell by now. This is why I pay people.
I’ll leave my general thoughts about the ridiculousness of the behavior surrounding No Man’s Sky in general for an upcoming Jimquisition (you better believe that’ll be a fun one), but suffice to say right now that the attack was incredibly pointless.
As I stated yesterday on social media, this site is ad-free and the review was available on Google Cache, fully readable with no skin off my nose. If anything, all that was accomplished was that the shit I pay for got some use at last.
Ironically, for someone accused of wanting to “censor” people because I sometimes write about social issues, this is far from the first time pissbabies have attempted to actively silence me.
The site’s come under attempted attacks before, ones that have failed, as a result of my writing those aforementioned articles about social stuff. A group of free speech champions once tried to have a Jimquisition episode removed from YouTube because they felt silencing me would be a big win for anti-censorship ideals (I don’t get the logic of that move either). Then of course we have the numerous takedown strikes and legal threats that have come from inane game developers.
I can safely say this is the first time I’ve had people go to so much effort to gag me over a review though.
Sure, I’ve had people lackadaisically threaten me, contact my bosses (when I had them) and suggest I should be fired, or write vast essays speculating on my sex life in comment threads as a result of my criticism, but it wasn’t until I called No Man’s Sky mediocre that I actually had this happen.
If you get that mad over videogame reviews, please, for your own good… take a fucking look at yourselves, okay?
The site’s still a little sluggish as things get back to normal, traffic remains high, and we look into optimizing things, so please excuse any weirdness. One can’t rule out another attempted attack either, so if the site goes down again, you’ll at least know why.
Once again though, for the record, taking this site down for a day really is the most pointless bloody exercise. Doesn’t financially hurt me, and it sure as shit doesn’t shut me up.
