Not Responsible (The Jimquisition)

It’s strange to me that previously accepted criticism can retroactively become censorship the moment something comes along that’s deliberately tacky and edgy. Almost as if, to some people, free speech is really only about having the freedom to be a dick.

Anyway, since Valve and YouTube can jettison responsibility for their platforms, so can I.

Jim, love your work in this issue, but it fucking kills me that every time you (rightly) call Valve out on their complete lack of quality control, and note that someday some government is going to call Valve on their shit and regulate said shit for them, you don’t bring up the Valve vs ACCC court case in Australia. Which is literally a case of a government calling Valve out on their bullshit and regulating it, and Valve doing their best to say ‘nu-uh’. Valve was fined millions of dollars and was forced to put an ugly-ass disclaimer on their… Read more »

At the risk of sounding like a shill, I think now is the time to go out and recommend GoG. There are viable alternatives to Steam, and right now we should be going out and spreading the word. I realize all of us have a sizeable library of games on Steam, but there’s always offline mode. I’m somewhat less quick to recommend Humble right now only because, even though I subscribe to their monthly thing myself, about two thirds of the games you get are Steam keys, and that’s one basket I’m not entirely too keen on putting eggs into… Read more »

Yay. Paulson from Fistshark Marketing is in this episode. This makes me really happy. I miss Paulson (and now FistShark in general as well)

I can see where Jim is going. The Comic Book Code Authority was established to deal with the out-of-control standards for comic books that had proliferated in the early 20th Century. If these companies hadn’t decided what sort of standards they would hew towards, the result was clear. Regulation would lay down its size-15 boot.

What would have happened to video games if companies had resisted a ratings system in the 1990s?

I think…that this is actually 2 (possibly 3) separate issues that are being confounded by your Youtube audience but also, with all due respect, you yourself, Jim. They are: 1) Quality Control 2) Content Control ***3) Legality (possible third) In my personal view 1) This would be things like: Missing executable files, Brocken games like the ones on your “direct to video series”, asset flips, Working buttons, playability, functionality ect. 3) This would be things like: copyright infringement , hate speech ( illegal but narrowly defined in Canada) pornography, advertising addictive substances, gambling ect. 1 and 3 are things Valve… Read more »

Bless that beautiful boy and his silly opinions.

On a completely unrelated note: Will there be more Loose boys? I found myself thinking about that show for some reason.

I think the idea of only banning things that are illegal and “trolling” would be a good if a) “trolling” was clarified a bit better to include asset flips and other low-effort games and b) if I could trust Steam would even do that much curating.
I see a lot of people who can’t see what the issue is with Steams statement. The issue is that it’s Steam and the only statement they should be making is removing the piles of shit from their shelves. I guess we get to keep anime titty games though.

I understand how this can get worse and worse over time, and that’s sad, but in the end it’s just the store. Instead of being so hyper focused on the Steam store just stop visiting and go to one of the other storefronts that are heavily curated, stop endorsing them by being a curator. Green man gaming, humble, amazon, GOG, twitch, Origin, Uplay, windows store, itch…. all sell PC games. Even if you’re buying a game that uses Steam DRM all of these options bypass the Steam store. Stop punishing yourself for over a privately owned company that doesn’t care… Read more »

So, Jim Fucking Sterling, Son has finally sold out. He finally has become the utter fucking greedy [♪SKELETON WARRIORS♫] that he claimed to never be. If i can get my hands on some Dark Souls Dildos, can I do a Jim Sterling themed porn? It’s for expansion efforts of the Jimquisiton. It’ll be me singing Born Different whilst dressed as Jim Sterling and that is totally normal! I mean, who doesn’t cosplay as Jim Sterling to do a porn? Hehehehe SHUT UP! Joking aside, excellent satire Jim. Sadly, i can see people failing to realise that this is satire and… Read more »
