Aaaaaand, my local 10 o’clock news just covered this game. So, I give it another week or two before the NRA and the White House are holding it up as further proof that video games are training school shooters.

Look, I’m all for people making the games they want, but I expect Valve to have a little more common sense than to allow something that is clearly chasing controversy and nothing more on their platform. Then again, I guess it’s on me for thinking that there’s any common sense left at Valve.

So a bit of a quandary here. We can’t allow games of tasteless violence because it will bring the attention of angry politicians and morality police down upon gaming and Steam as a storefront but games that are basically porn are to be defended? I realize they aren’t morally equivalent in the least. Making a game about something that is going on with legitimately shocking regularity (and pundits mocking the child survivors) is not the same as any kind of porn no matter how mean spirited or misogynistic it might be. HOWEVER the same argument that applies to these shooting… Read more »

If Valve does take this “game” down, shouldn’t they by extension also have to take down (if asked) military shooters based in the Middle East where you gun down Arabs, out of respect for all the many thousands of civilians the West maimed and murdered there when their countries were invaded? Is that a false equivalence? I’m still mulling it over.

It won’t be long till games based on school shootings will become the new daily diarrhea that was greenlight.

I think we’ve officially reached the point where social injustice warriors are just plain more annoying than the tumblr SJWs that they were railing against in the first place. Their politics have always been horrible and the minority who actually harrassed people were always reprehensible. But now we’re at a point I feel where it’s the norm for social injustice warriors to just be anti-PC on nothing more than principle, even if the thing they’re screaming about is very reasonable if you give it any sort of thought, and it just makes them infuriating to listen to. Are we going… Read more »

I think that this, like a lot of discussion regarding the actual theme these games portray, are missing much needed nuance. If I ask myself some questions I can personally get to the bottom of it. I actually think others will do so too. They’ll anticipate a reaction though, something which I remember Jim lamenting about Peter Molyneux, and pre emptively take a stance that counters the anticipated stance. So why not do it here: The first thing I obviously ask myself in the context of the outrage is: Should a game with the subject matter of Active Shooter ever… Read more »

Jim, your kind words for TB are greatly appreciated, but I think maybe something should be done with that music in the background? I mean, I don’t think sad music for that kind of thing is necessary or even tasteful because it implies you’re intentionally milking drama out of a bad situation, BUT… Your usual FF9 jester theme kind of clashes with the tone you’re probably going for and the words you’re saying. Maybe just not have background music at all during that moment would have been better? I dunno, that’s just my impression. Other than that, my condolences, I… Read more »

“Offense is taken not given, so if you’re upset by this then it’s your fault!” the sheltered 30-something angrily recites out of context to someone who wasn’t actually talking to them in the first place. “Why are you trying to take my games away from me!” he tweets at the grieving parents who want to mourn in peace without being randomly tagged into sick reminders of their murdered child’s final fearful and agonising moments. “WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE TO BE SO EMOTIONAL!” he spits and froths at the young women who calmly tries to explain how his actions are having… Read more »

So, does the new policy require one Boglin as the price of membership to the greatest show in the industry or a pogin? It’s really not clear. Regarding Battlefield 5. All I can say is, and? It’s Battlefield. It can claim to be historically accurate but it’s main focus has always been multiplayer. The cynical in me feels it’s EA being EA again ad this is their response to CODWWII. I mean, yeah, it’s Battlefield. What else is there to say? Regarding this. I would go “Really? This is… really?” but it’s steam. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was… Read more »

My cynical side is slightly suprised that some asshole doesn’t try and make a new one of these themed around each school shooting.

My even more cynical side remembers that it would be impossible to keep up because on average there’s more than one school shooting a week.

Whereas in the UK (with very strict gun laws) we’ve had 0 school shootings in over 22 years.
