Never played Godhand, but the way that babyz (eurgh, really?!) game has been straight up safe-rated 7.5s all through makes me think that nobody cared or bothered to play it, and they assumed nobody else would care or bother to play it, so phoned in the score by merely reading the box blurb.

The thing that is impressive about how bad the xbox one ui is that they have a share function… but you have to double tap the home button, press x to record, go to the video by pressing home twice, going to your alerts, opening the video and then sharing it. Of course though this by default will only record the last 30 seconds unless you go through the clusterfuck that is the options menu. But the other logical option to quickly make a clip of something cool/bad/funny during gameplay is to double tap the home button, go down to… Read more »

Audio is pretty rough this week. Very hard to follow the flow of the conversation.

What I got was books pounding other books in the butt, which is just a rip off of Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg from the Page Master, The Walking Dead is one bad death away from alienating all its remaining fans, and Nintendo reads too much Fifty Shades of Mario.

People only remember the good games that Bethesda has released they forget things like Brink which was released in a terrible state, Rage which was mediocre at best and had issues on PC, Hunted: The Demons Forge (i bet no one remembers that one), hell the PS3 version of Skyrim remains a mess to this day. There’s no reason to trust Bethesda without reviews and I’m probably going to delay my purchase of dishonored out of spite, not like there isn’t plenty of other games coming out November that will have reviews on launch.

Look, it’s remarkably disrespectful to use someone else’s misfortunes in your argument on their behalf unless the complaints are directly related to those misfortunes–which, considering some of the comments you replied to feature aspects that have gone back years, I highly doubt. Even the people dying of cancer very rarely appreciate random others white-knighting on their behalf with it like it’s a trump-card; if nothing else you’re reducing their entire existence down to that variable, which isn’t a terribly enjoyable thing. You know, when somebody is being treated for cancer, you don’t say they’re “dying” from it as if death is somehow the only expected outcome when so many people presently overcome it with our modern advances in medicine, not unless you’re trying to establish a particularly unsavoury defensive stance.

Review scores might be useful. Might. Metacritic is not. If everyone is giving a game similar scores, then looking at any one review score will tell you everything that averaging the review scores would. If reviewers are giving a game wildly different review scores, then you need to decide which reviewers have opinions that are useful to you*. Averaging those scores with the scores of reviewers who aren’t useful produces a number that doesn’t help anyone with their purchasing decisions. *That doesn’t mean that they agree with you, only that their opinion can tell you if you’ll like the game.… Read more »

Game of Thrones is far too nihilistic for me to get into, it suffers from TV Tropes calls Darkness Induced Audience Apathy, I just can’t care about any of the characters knowing that any of them can die at any time.

They aren’t revealed to have been dead the entire time. The Limbo part is set after the characters leave the Island if they leave. Considerably after. Positive because the characters are reunited and given happy conclusions to their stories you do get that tends to be something which is viewed as positive.

almost like in RL .. people are so quick to forget .. until a few years ago all we ever got was happy ends and immortal characters who were never in any danger no matter what happened in the story – personally I m quite glad that at least some TV has the freedom to tell a gritty and dark story – complaining about that seems just weird to me

It’s not RL though, it’s just the other side of the same trope-y, overdone, unrealistic coin. I hoped we had left the “dark and gritty = realism” assumption back in 90s comic books, but unfortunately not. Sure, Game of Thrones or Walking Dead had some novelty at the time, but you can only watch people randomly getting killed off so often before you stop investing into them. why should you get invested? because that is sort of the point of drama – you reflect on the similarities between you and the protagonist so you identify and suffer with them, when the inevitable doom that is the consequence of their hubris is inflicted upon them in the climax of the play/stories – it invites you to commiserate with them and remember the tragedy, that is inherent in the human condition – I dont think all media should reflect that of course but it has been a staple of story telling since at least ancient Greece, and one that… Read more »

I have nothing in common with anyone in Game of Thrones, characters die left and right so there’s no reason to get invested in any of them.

I’m well aware that it’s a story-telling staple since ancient times, that does not mean it’s always inherently a good thing though, it’s done poorly in shows like GOT

I read the article but found there to be an obvious answer to his thesis: “Nintendo doesn’t give a shit about Gamers.”

It’s marketing to people who play lots of video games (of which there are many) but not to “gamers.” It wants people to be interested in going out and playing Nintendo with their friends and families or play by themselves if they want to.

I mean according to the research the incredibly vast majority of “players of video games” do not consider themselves, “Gamers.” Even if the former play a lot lot lot of video games.
