Podquisition Episode 115: Del Toro’s Angry Bedtime

[Note: Soundcloud is being fucking useless again, so here’s a direct link since the embed’s fucked]

On a jovial episode, we celebrate Resident Evil 7 being really quite nice, and wonder exactly what the deal is with Life of Black Tiger.

Elsewhere, Kojima and Del Toro live together in a one-bedroom flat, and the crew talks about bad interviews.

I don’t feel like Kojima is lying, more like playing with us, leaving clues, like a serial killer. Also he is mai waifu.

True, just like he was playing people when he said that people would “feel bad” for making comments about Quiet, I don’t think he actually believed that, I think he was just trolling.

Immagine a japanese action videogame. Now immagine there is only one female character. Also she is a badass sniper… So yeah, I think Quiet was pretty tame, even compared to Beauty and the Beast unit from MGS4, especially if compared to other japanese games. Also, as much as Kojima’s statement was a justification for her apparel, it kind of made sense and fitted inside the narrative: if she didn’t breath through her skin, she would be dead because of the parasite in her lungs. I don’t think it was so much gratuitous as it was made believe. I mean, it… Read more »

Great episode! There was some laughs and even though first person games are not my thing, it’s great to hear about good art and hear artistic people talk about it. 🙂 In regards to the last question. My 2 cents…because why not? This is an open forum…. 2 of the best game I played but that I have a hard time recommending… Lollipop Chainsaw…I love it. I love the humour and look but I understand the criticism of the combat and why some people would have a problem with the writing and some of the questionable jokes. Castlevania: Harmony of… Read more »

There are some games that I wouldn’t consider the best that I enjoyed personally but would have a tough time recommending like Colonial Marines, my expectations for it weren’t that high, so I was not let down like others were and I also did not encounter any glitches(wish I could say the same for Isolation, which is by far the glitchiest game i’ve ever played)

I hope this Black Tiger thing and Sony’s drug trip of crappy downloadable games becomes a Jimquisition. Black Tiger is only the third time this has happened and it’s becoming insane…also look up Solbrain Knight….it’s another asset flip…on PS4….

Black Tiger and that Skylight game aren’t on the UK playstation storefront. I’d say that sony are testing the waters by putting the absolute garbage releases on the US store first before risking going international with it, but…thinking about it, it’s probably just that the release dates are different internationally.

We have now reached peak Sterling. We have Jim, right, not bothering to do a voice impression, pretending to be Kojima, just saying Kojima like a Kojima pokemon, and then responding to himself, again not bothering to do a voice, as Del Toro and it goes on for several minutes.
And I can’t tell if it’s genius or if I should call a doctor.

The Wii U version of Revelations had some control issues and other technical faults, but the 360 and PS3 versions worked just fine, so it’s not a case of not translating well, it’s the case of the Wii U getting a shitty and inferior port. I think Jim would’ve enjoyed Revelations 2 more if he had waited until the whole game came out on disc(which is what I did) instead of playing it episode by episode and trying to review each one separately. RE6 did not feel like “desperate flailing” to me, it felt like Capcom was trying to make… Read more »

“Del Toro’s Angry Bedtime” is like, the best FistShark bit Jim’s ever done and it wasn’t even on FistShark. I laughed quite hard.

I’ll give the same answer to “best game I’d find difficult to recommend” I always do, and that’s X3: Terran Conflict. Engage me in any kind of conversation about that and I’ll spend ages doing nothing but complaining about what’s wrong with it. But it’s still one of my all-time favourites.

I dunno man their recent Fly House had me laughing so hard I nearly rearended someone while on a contract today. Fist Shark has always been good. Although I do miss what’s her name? Caslyn? Cathleen? Kurahe? Well whatever.

del Toro’s role is no surprise. In the Death Stranding panel a month ago, it was stated that Gulllermo was only body scanned. Kojima stated that GDT’s busy with other projects. Someone else will be doing the voice and motion capture.

I’m going to isolate Laura’s reaction to Life of Black Tiger and just listen to it on a loop.
Laura: “Oh, oh, oooh. Wow! Oooh~”
Jim: “That’s just the first bit of it!”

It hasn’t been mentioned by anyone, so I don’t know if you peeps know, but one of the two writers from Spec Ops: The Line (Richard Pearsey) was brought in for Resi 7 creation. Which is also considered a horror by some, isn’t it? Anyway, just thought it was worth noting for some reason.

Regarding the Mass Effect recommendation discussion towards the end of the show:

Anyone who hasn’t played the Mass Effect trilogy but is interested in checking out Andromeda, should really go watch Noah Gervais’ “A Thorough Look at Mass Effect” video.

Not only is it some of the best commentary I have ever encountered, it will bring you up to speed on the story. The video is a bit of a time investment but it’s much quicker than playing through the whole series.

Gurphardt
Guest

Also Noah Caldwell-Gervais’ videos in general. Easily some of the best critical deep dives I’ve seen about vidya gaems medium. They’re generally long, and the early ones suffer from poor sound quality but I think they’re well worth the watch for anyone with a deep abiding love for the medium.

“The longest thing I’ve worked on…” Hehehehehehehehehe.

I have to be the only person in the world who doesn’t like RE 4, I guess. Nice to hear RE 7 returns to the classic style, though. I’ll probably never play it, but it’s good to know it wasn’t shite.

diamond
Guest

There are definitely others who don’t like it because they say that’s when the series started to go downhill by focusing on action over horror.

I like it but it’s not my favorite in the series, that would be RE6.

Nope, I didn’t like RE4 either. Too third-person action shooter for me.

Those titles aren’t available in the UK PSN store that I can see so far. Is Sony just trolling the US’s lower bar of quality control? I thought that only extended to food, health, politics, employment, education, tolerance, film and literature. Not the vidja-games too!

Best game I’d hesitate to recommend is Shadow of Memories on the PS2.

I thought it was a really clever game, with interesting visuals & game mechanics. It is also very frustrating, some of the puzzle solutions are insane and getting all 8 endings basically requires a walkthrough as doing 1thing out of order can throw off the ending you’re going for.

For Hatoful Boyfreind for rather obvious reasons because on the surface it does appear to be a game about dating pigeons and is far deeper than that with some quite touching and dark stories.

PSN is becoming just like Steam, Sony lets anything on that platform.
Look at the game “Planet 2000”, it was released the same week as Life of Black Tiger.

or that ‘Kill the bad Guy’ one. Really don’t want PSN to end up flooded with shite like Steam

galactix100

galactix100

That managed to find it’s way onto the xbone store as well. As did fucking Dead Effect 2 of all games.
Really hope this doesn’t become a trend because one of the things consoles had over Steam was that there was actual curation rather than just letting any old shit onto the store front.

Rachel McVeigh

Rachel McVeigh

agree, one of the big positives of a console storefront was that the quality control meant that you had some expectation of quality. (games like Homefront Revolution being the exception)

I saw Dead Effect 2 on PNS a last week and my mouth dropped.

To do this all so quietly without announcing an indie program or somthing is weird.

diamond
Guest

I think Homefront Revolution is a really good game and I wouldn’t compare to shit like like Black Tiger.

drownedsummer

There appears to be a lack of quality in terms of what is getting released on disc as well. I noticed the other week several quite bad games which are on Steam like Joe’s Diner are getting released on disc on the PS4 and with a considerable price increase as well. They may also be on the PSN network as well as I’ve not turned my PS4 on for a month now.

The Orc/Crossbow FPS where Jim ran backward for about 30 minutes has been on PS4 for about a year. Every flood starts somewhere, I get the feeling that’s where the leak started.

Polishfury5000
Guest
Polishfury5000

I just had a gander at YouTube, and Jim’s got another game video up of another shitty greenlight game on PSN.

This trend is spreading, and oh god how long will it take for the worst of the steam offenders to hit PSN? How long till we get digi-hom? They’re kicked off of steam, but PSN is a whole new host to infect.

Some already have as several are getting physical and overpriced releases

What?! How inexpensive does it have to be to release on PlayStation 4?

You can’t even bank on ludicrous steam card sales to float your business here.

Joe’s Diner less than £5 on Steam. 14..99 for a on disc release for the PS4.

Homefront Revolution?

diamond
Guest

There’s still a world of difference between a big game made by devs who clearly did care(as evidenced by the fact that they had a message in the end credits) with some bugs that later got patched out and a shitty asset flip where the devs aren’t even trying and are solely relying on trading cards.

drownedsummer
Guest
drownedsummer

So they cared enough to put an allegedly heartfelt message in but not enough to do through QA so those bugs were never present in the first place and those bugs being patched doesn’t clear up the other issues with that game.

diamond
Guest
diamond

I’m sure the publisher forced them to ship the game before it was actually ready, i’ve heard that happen countless times with developers, wouldn’t surprise me.

I don’t think Revolution really had any major issues, I found the world and story interesting the gameplay fun and engaging the characters interesting and compelling, etc.

galactix100

Holy fucking hot dogs. How is this shit getting on the PS4 storefront? I’d understand if it were on Steam because Valve clearly don’t care but it shouldn’t be on PS4.

Man, I don’t want the PSN store to get flooded with Steam Greenlight caliber garbage. I remember last gen when XBL opened it’s Indie store up. There was so much crap to wade through before you found the gems. There is a part of me, though, that’s excited about the potential of getting a deluge of “so bad they’re entertaining” titles. I’ll happily invite over friends, pass the controller around, pad my trophy collection, and just make a drinking game of it. Take a swig anytime you see an unaltered asset, a broken hitbox, awful scenery clipping, or fall through… Read more »
