Podquisition Episode 122: What The Cuck Is This Anal Bum Party?

This episode’s suffering will be legendary, even in Hell.

There are no rails in sight as we hurdle from sincere divulgences to Metacritic mayhem, angry people, and extramarital shenanigans.

Somehow, we also get a lot of game chat, from more Zelda thoughts to a hot take on Nier: Automata and more!

  • ThinkingClass

I haven’t listened yet but you guys & girl have made the last 29 minutes of work bearable.

(To quote my wife on our wedding night) “I hope this ain’t shit”

  • Jamesworkshop
  • Terriosaurus Hex

    My body.

    Is.

    Ready.

  • MeriwetherMalodor

    My anal bum is ready.

  • MIRACLE OF SOUND IS DOING WORK ON A GAME??? WHAT!? XD

    • drownedsummer

      A sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend?

  • Oliver Mendes

I think Jonathan Holmes summed it up nicely back when he, Jim, and Conrad Zimmerman were doing the Dismal Jesters podcast: “I’ve seen the culture around Nintendo fans change a lot in the past few years where they’ve been made fun of so much for so long now it’s become a much more bitter, angry, sometimes more entitled culture.”

    • darksteel6

I don’t remember Nintendo fans ever really being made fun of that much, though I do remember Nintendo fans making fun of Sega fans when the Saturn came out.

      • FireEmblemFan

well. there is all the talk about nintendo games being for children, and thus insulating that nintendo fans like “baby games” etc.

        • darksteel6

I’ve rarely actually seen anyone say that, and those that do usually get mocked themselves.

  • Zefram Mann

Waiting for my significant other to awaken before listening, as she always enjoys listening to Jim’s raunchy shenanigans as much as I. The preview image tells me this might be particularly amusing.

  • joe

what is this some kind of “journalist” squad

  • SilentPony

Breath of the Wild is literally the worst Zelda game on the Switch. Literally. The. Worst.

    • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Well clearly sir, you have offended me deeply, so now I must politely ask you to drink a bottle of cleaning product and inform you that you are a derogatory term for female genitalia. Good day!

      • InfamousDS

In addition, they must endure sexual intercourse being performed by their partner with another person whilst they watch. Jolly good punishment that.

        • Sperium3000

I do declare, this is most evidently a clever hullabaloo by those rapscallions, the order of the mighty fighters of the justice of society, and their testy cohorts, the facists of the female agenda. I say!

          • SilentPony

Verily! By such scorn and ridicule have you both changed my position regarding aforementioned game, and proven beyond all doubt that my manhood is shriveled and ineffective and that your manhood is sizable and desirable.

          • Sperium3000

Why, your complimentary opinions of my manhood are highly appreciated, good fellow!

        • Dave Dogge

Why Sir ! do you mean to imply that I am but hung like a pygmy rabbit ? boo you sir, boo you…

    • Mickey ‘Pyrian’ Callahan

Also, it’s objectively the worst, too!

    • James LaValle

It’s also the only zelda game on the switch, so wouldn’t that also make it the best?

  • InfamousDS

But Jim! How ca we reproduce it unaltered when you’ve altered it?!

  • darksteel6

Total Biscuit had a very interesting discussion about the Zelda fanboys on Co Optional.

    • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Whew, I don’t think any of us would know how to feel about it until another YouTuber told us. Thank you so much for this info.

      • Sperium3000

Dude, don’t be a dick. He’s just talking about something people might find cool to check out.

        • Anton

That being said, I am now 95% sure that’s diamond with a new name. The TB reference puts it over the top.

          • Polishfury5000

With last week’s Yahtzee drop and their habit of mass replying, and post structuring, it has to be an attempted rebrand.

          • darksteel6

I’m pretty sure i’m not the only person on here who likes Zero Punctuation LOL

          • Polishfury5000

No, just the only one to bring him up as vindication for your opinions.

Very rarely do we see posts from you that don’t include “I agree with ‘YouTuber X’ ” in some form.

It’s part of your unique posting style that gives ya away, Diamond mate.

Not that there’s anything wrong with a rebrand (hell, I recently changed my own avatar), and I’m enjoying yours.

            So keep on doing you.

          • darksteel6

            OK then.

I just wish that Chris guy would stop attacking me for no reason, it’s funny how he tries to paint himself as a victim, yet his very first post responding to me was an insult out of nowhere.

          • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Only if you pretend you weren’t Diamond.

But then, I also notice you’re refusing to actually /say/ that you aren’t him. You’re never actually answering either way, so no one can call you a liar when you slip up and reference some old discussion or some old comment thread that predates this new identity I’d imagine.

          • darksteel6

I won’t insult you anymore if you won’t insult me anymore, deal?

          • Chris Schwartz-Brown

That’s all I’ve wanted for weeks.

          • darksteel6

            Alright then, agreed.

          • drownedsummer

It is diamond. The Alpha Protocol avatar is a clue as is their enjoyment of the Technomancer and also is talking about Ghost Recon.

          • darksteel6

You’re saying it’s not humanely possible for anyone else to actually enjoy those games? In spite of how popular one of them is? OK then.

          • Anton

Would you perhaps consider that…. foolish?

          • darksteel6

Foolish to enjoy those games? I’m really not sure what you’re saying.

          • Polishfury5000

You’re using the exact same syntax. If you aren’t him, then you’re a very good troll and I tip my cap to you, because well played on the bait.

          • darksteel6

            OK, whatever you say.

          • drownedsummer

It’s certainly possible but also very curious that the person who also enjoyed those games appears to have stopped posting and someone with the exact same preference in games starts posting immediately.

How do you feel about Pixels by the way?

          • darksteel6

It’s more or less what I expected it to be-a live action version of that one Futurama episode with a similar premise, whether that’s a good or a bad thing depends on your taste in humor since comedy is subjective after all. It’s an alright film for me, not great but not terrible either, but I understand why people like Jim and Moviebob are not fond of it to put it lightly.

          • Chris Schwartz-Brown

It’s obviously diamond. That he’s denying it now is more sad than anything. He’s not even trying hard to hide it with his constant harping on about federation force or his constant need to seek validation from popular YouTubers to justify his opinions.

          • M.

And it’s not just a similar avatar, it’s the *exact same one*. Scrolling down, I thought Disqus had glitched out and unblocked him for a moment before I saw that he’s just sockpuppetting.

            Diamond is not smart.

          • darksteel6

Why? People have mentioned him on here before. It’s not like he’s some obscure content creator.

          • Anton

            LOL

          • RifleAvenger Sashiro

The biggest clue to me is that Diamond was conspicuously absent in the Zelda review comments, but this guy lept into the fray like a berserker just like I assumed Diamond would do.

If it is him though, when he’s not talking to Zelda fanboys it’s an improvement.

          • darksteel6

That was due to me being very sick and bored that day, I was truly out of fucks to give and was so damn tired of fanboys whining over Jim’s reviews that I gave no quarter to any of those fools. Can’t say I regret it, but i’ll try not to do that again.

        • darksteel6

That guy’s been hostile to me from the very start, i’ve given up on him actually acting like a decent human being.

          • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Wrong, I’ve only been hostile to you since you called me homophobic slurs because we disagreed on a game. I’ve continued because you’re an obvious troll. You can’t just rewrite history because you changed screen names.

  • MyBodyIsReady

I’m so pumped to play Nier. Someone link me to the time they start talking about it?

    • InfamousDS

Laura tries to steer Jim to it at around 20 minutes, they get heavily sidetracked, and then Jim just goes deep into it somewhere between 40 minutes to 1 hour in, and he goes quite a long time.

      • Anton

        How deep we talkin’?

        • InfamousDS

He knows what makes the protag tick, cause he saw it firsthand.

  • Chris Schwartz-Brown

What is this intro? It was professional and very well done. I don’t like it. I don’t come here to hear who Gavin is before twenty minutes in!

  • Oliver Mendes

Are the new site community features going to be like a forum like Reddit or just a Q&A like Ask.FM was?

  • Austin_sj

    Drink water and live Jim!

    • CaitSeith

But everyone who drinks water dies… 🙁

  • padaco

banging each others wives/husbands is just a natural part of the business process. I don’t trust anyone if they don’t bang my spouse first. while I watch. and film it.

  • InfamousDS

“Activision will put it on every platform…”

    With microtransactions, WH-HYUT!!!

  • Ian Goldberg

Did the nightmare animation ever get name-dropped?

    • InfamousDS

      I don’t think so. But I didn’t really care.

      • Ian Goldberg

Aw, that’s a shame. I’m into horrifying obscure cartoons.

  • Jamesworkshop

    Crossdressing

    7/10
    GOOD

  • Brett J Gau

No Mass Effect talk, right? Wanna make sure before I listen.

    • SilentPony

Mass Effect 3’s ending was dreadful and completely out of tone with the rest of the game.

      • Brett J Gau

Hahaha. I should have specified Andromeda talk. I’m hoping the embargo is still up

      • TJ Barke

Shut up, Gav. Quit preaching to the choir.

      • Chris Schwartz-Brown

        That’s not fair.

Mass Effect 3 went to shit well before the ending, so the ending was pretty in keeping with how garbage the Quarian/Geth chapter was.

        • Anton

          Hey…. I liked that part.

          Ending was shit, though.

        • Kyle Pierce

Yea, the bad ending just made the rest of the game look better than it actually was.

          • darksteel6

I think it was a genuinely good game, and I was fortunate to play the directors cut so my experience was not as badly tainted as others were.

          • CaitSeith

I played both versions (all endings). I objectively enjoyed the original less than the extended ones.

        • Hell no, that part was great.

    • Jamesworkshop

They mention it by name, but no real details. none of them have copies.

      • Brett J Gau

        Cool, thanks!

    • Spurious K

Nah nothing beyond not getting copies at the time of recording I think.

  • Terriosaurus Hex

Wednesday? Wh…what you on about, Laura? I thought this was live…why is it Wednesday, Laura?? It’s Thursday…It’s always Thursday, Laura…Why would you say Wednesday? You… you’ve done this a thousand times before…It’s Thursday!
    *Sobs quietly in foetal position*

    Not.

    Wednesday.

    • drownedsummer

In fairness with Laura’s almost time travel week with episode 12 of her BOTW LP I can see why there might be some confusion.

      • Terriosaurus Hex

Those pesky time travelling lesbians messing around with dark unweildy powers!!

        • Xenon42

You leave Tracer out of this!

    • Ayon Windsor

I’m pretty sure she won’t actually read this.

      • InfamousDS

They’ve been known to frequent the comment sections. Although its rare they stop by more than a day or so after posting.

        • Ayon Windsor

I am not disputing that “they” do. I think Laura doesn’t. At least not here.

I know, and by hearing Jim literally talking about wanting to engage with his audience via a forum, can without a doubt see that they do frequent their comments and fan inquiries.

Conrad does do so extensively on the Spin-Off doctors and I am very much thankful that they in general do engage with their audience when the reality is that they could very well dedicate nearly a third of their whole day to just answering comments/mails/forums/etc. and still not get close to covering it all.

With that said, it appears to me (admittedly from personal experience, so please feel free to correct me if I’m talking from my arse, which could very much be the case) that Laura has made her most “official” channels the single denominator of engaging with her. She usually engages on twitter and plattforms of her choice. She has talked about abondoning her ask fm and such before and at least as of late I am seeing her less and less outside of her own domains.

Which makes sense, why would you prioritize other peoples media? That Gavin is out and about on the subbreddit about Jim is him going out of his way to engage with an audience he is remotely (or indirectly?) connected to.

Anyway what I’m on about: I have actually not seen a Disqus account from Laura since Destructoid, and that may be on me.
I haven’t heard back from any mails I’ve written for over a year and since I don’t participate in “social media” in the form of Facebook or Twitter I actually haven’t seen her anywhere outside of her youtube comments. So all in all, going by what media occurrences she mentions on the show and my experience with it, I am convinced (again, I’m not saying it’s factually true) that she doesn’t read about it here.

          • InfamousDS

If you go back through the older Podquisitions, both Laura and Gavin have both commented here. Admittedly, they might have been scared away by a negative nancy who did nothing but argue with them (without them even needing to post a comment), but they have done it before. Laura as recently as the last episode of her temporary absence during the move/personal issues.

I’d look up episode numbers, but I have a lot to do today and really shouldn’t be here at all.

          • Ayon Windsor

I’ll just take that as true and live with the fact that I am talking out of my ass.

          • InfamousDS

Shame is too strong. Mildly in love with the taste of boot is more appropriate 😛

      • Terriosaurus Hex

I was merely muttering to myself in vain, have come to terms with that a long time ago. Its something am trying to cut down on though.

  • Terriosaurus Hex

As a person who currently has some issues including annoying and quite inhibiting anxiety, I very much envy the lax US regulations for medically prescribed drugs when they sound so awesome and useful when plied to Jim. Give me your drugs, damnit! Must I sing Muse’s Bliss at top volume for your utmost displeasure?? Word on the grapevine is alcohol is not a healthy coping strategy. Ooh, grape nectar…

  • Ryan

IS Jim reviewing Neir or nah??

  • prh99

    Two hours, Sterling be praised.

    • Gorantharon

Oh, god I didn’t look at the length. Can’t do that now.

  • Spurious K

Jim got me to play and enjoy Dynasty Warriors. I’m not most of the world though. But I doubt I am alone in being influenced him on that so… a (very) partial success on that goal? Better than nothing? Not as good as something? 7 out of 10, needed to be several billion more people?

  • Danijel B.

How could Jim only find 20 seeds in all of his time with Zelda? I found 20 in the first area and another 40 in the second.

    • drownedsummer

Which is barely the tip of the iceberg in terms of how many there are.

    • You’re right, that actually doesn’t make any sense given how many times I upgraded my weapon stash. I think I *had* 20 when I ended the game or something and just misremembered.

      • Chris

That’s good to hear. I have about 100 right now and thought “am I trying too hard!?”

  • Appretaur

It’s hard to parse Jim’s logic when he says that he hates a common term like “both sides” because it has been “mutilated,” apparently, without explaining or qualifying what he means by that…

    • darksteel6

He dosen’t have to, I totally get what he’s saying.

      • Appretaur

Well then, what is he saying? What exactly has been mutilated about the phrase?

        • I haven’t listened to the podcast yet buuut, like, in certain internet and political circles, you have people who throw certains words and phrases around a lot to seem more “logical” and “detached” to debates, trying to seem “impartial”, if you understand. (But guess what? They aren’t at all really.)

I’m pretty sure the context involves the use of “both sides” in political debate where one side has done or said overtly damaging things while the other side not so much, but there’s some people who “pride” themselves on being “neutral”, saying “both sides are just as bad” and not officially taking a side themselves but still acting or having ideas that are more like one side than the other.

Usually this is a sort of derailing tactic used by some people, mostly trying to equivalent a party whose head is a racist tangerine that has likely sexually abused women and a secret Kremlin agent to another party leader who used a private email server, making her “just as bad”.

Another example where “both sides” are “just as bad” is BLM and the KKK. because, as we know, people protesting against cops killing unarmed black people for minor offenses is “just as bad” as white supremacists who have a history of lynching people and have ties to many cops that kill black people for minor offenses.

          “Both sides”.

          • Appretaur

Hmm, well, okay, that’s a good general way to frame this stuff. Thanks loads for the effort you put in on my account. =D

          • NP. “Both sides” is also used in non-political ways and stuff too–I’ve heard it in fandom spaces also–but on the hole it’s mostly used during rather, say, “black and white arguments” where one side is clearly the better side compared to the other, even if the better side still isn’t perfect.

I could name some pretty popular fandom ones but, like, they could all ruin a comment section like whoa, and I’ve already invited in people with the political talk in my comment as it is.

          • darksteel6

I remember I had a real problem when Bioshock Infinite tried to invoke the “both sides” argument in regards to the Columbians and the Vox Populi, but considering one side consists of racists, I didn’t buy the games argument that they were both as bad as the other, and the games attempts to do that with Daisy felt really half-assed(which is probably why they expanded on her character in the Burial at Sea DLC)

          • Yeah. One big problem in a ton of video games that involved oppression while trying to do grey and grey morality is that it seems they don’t have a really good grasp on how people have gotten rights and freedom over the years. For centuries, all over the world, when people were oppressed–whether because of class, race, religion, whatever–they’d often rebelled and a lot of the rebellions ended in blood shed. You will very rarely read about a revolution or rebellion that changed the course of a country that doesn’t end with someone dying. That’s how it goes.

And, like, often in these games, the “grey and grey morality” is a class that oppresses people and a class of people being oppressed and apparently the oppressing class is bad for oppressing but the oppressed class is bad for stooping to killing and stealing or whatever? Uh…you realise they wouldn’t need to do that…if people weren’t oppressing them, right?

And, you know what, whatever, let’s open the floodgates. I doubt people are gonna read all of this anyway.

I think probably one of the few games that does grey and grey morality well is New Vegas; yeah, one faction is totally morally wrong, but you got Independent, New California Republic and House who all have very valid and invalid reasoning. NCR has law and order but they’re stretched thin and a bit corrupt bureaucratically; Independant gets rid of all these outsider influences that have been screwing things up but leaves the area vulnerable; and House keeps the status quo but he also keeps the status quo and it isn’t really good.

Another game would be Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Some endings will likely screw you over but from an entirely moral standpoint, it’s all really bleak. Basically you’re enabling vampires to eat people with a bureaucracy, you’re enabling vampire to eat people without a bureaucracy or your enabling Kuei-jin to kill all the vampires and they get to eat people instead. In VtMB, there is no true morality, rather it’s your own self interest and perhaps what you think will cause the least damage down the line for everyone, if you wanna take that into account.

          • Xenon42

            I read your post. <3

I actually love Caesar from Fallout: New Vegas. He is the perfect distillation of everything that is wrong with fascism. The blatant hypocrisy, the hearkening to a "golden age" that never existed, the masking of barbarism with appropriated culture, the appeals to machismo and shunning of critical thinking, the talk of a bright future while kicking out the foundations of civilization…

If Caesar was just a feudal warlord like Immortan Joe, he wouldn't be as much fun. There's a certain honesty to a monarch's tyranny. They're in charge because they're better than you. They don't pretend their rule is somehow in your best interests. And at least a monarch might appreciate the arts, or engage with philosophy, or just be a reasonable human being in general.

No, Caesar is a megalomaniac, using his monstrous, incoherent, untenable ideology to gather as much power as possible, leaving the world burning in his wake. That's what makes him so fun to hate, and makes storming The Fort with Boone at my side such a joy, every single playthrough.

  • darksteel6

Fading HUDs aren’t really something I care about, I prefer to have the HUD on all the time.

What exactly was that drama that Gavin was talking about where some person was attacking him? I wasn’t around for that.

Hey now, Joey was a great spin-off show! He actually improved as a character in that show since he was no longer a complete moron like he was in the last few seasons of Friends.

Those Styx games do sound crap though, I enjoyed Mars War Logs and Technomancer, but of Orcs and Men doesn’t really sound like it’s my bag.

I remember Bound by Flame mainly because Total Biscuit tore that game apart, I never wanted to touch it after watching his video on it, it looked like every other generic fantasy RPG game, War Logs and Technomancer were at least unique in that you don’t see many games that take place on Mars.

I care quite a bit about Ghost Recon Wildlands and i’m having a great time, I can definitely see why it’s popular, but at the same time I can see why you are not personally interested in it.

I’d be cool with Laura a Wildlands if you can’t be arsed, also wouldn’t mind her or you taking a look at Halo Wars 2.

    • drownedsummer

Considering it was cancelled and the final episodes weren’t broadcast it surely can’t have been that good.

      • darksteel6

A show getting cancelled and not having it’s final episodes broadcast does not necessarily mean the show itself was bad, shows get unfairly screwed over by networks all the damn time. On Tv Tropes it’s called “Screwed by the Network” and it’s happened to many great shows like Wonderfalls, that show was cancelled way too early and not all of it’s episodes aired on TV, but you won’t find many people who say it’s because that was a bad show, it wasn’t, FOX just treated it badly.

        http://tvtropes(DOT)org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScrewedByTheNetwork

NBC did Joey no favors in it’s second season, as it put it up against American Idol of all shows, which naturally caused a drop in ratings which they used to justify cancelling the show.

        • Fred Davis

          Firefly was a 7/10 show :3

(but yeah, Joey was murdered rather than properly dying of poor ratings like it deserved)

          • darksteel6

Joey actually had really good ratings until NBC fucked things up(it’s premiere episode got a whopping 18 million viewers).

  • DickardDeckard

Two hours? You folks spoil us 🙂

    • MG_Salad

It’s because Jim is rambling to a ridiculous degree, but in a great way.

  • Shaun

Elevator joke was between garrus and tali in me2. It ends with her reminding him she has a shotgun.

  • RoanarTheFruitiful

Haha I look forward to listening this tomorrow! I make my whole family endure this podcast, the Boglin Boy’s podcasts are slowly starting to be requested on journeys now so I know they’re liking them haha!!

  • Knight_Blazer

Today I learned it’s $100 to make Jim say whatever you want.

    • drownedsummer

His price has gone up on podtoid it used to be about $10.

      • Knight_Blazer

Damn inflation. The cost to have Jim say things goes up but minimum wage remains the same.

    • Forrest Kayssen

He should totally add that as a patreon reward tier. “$100: Will say whatever you want in one of my Jimpressions videos”

      • InfamousDS

48 hours after that becomes a goal:
“Hey you fast food puked up by Donald Trump after he realized it wasn’t American-made, Jim Sterling here with a 12-hours long Dynasty Warriors Jimpressions as I read the excessively long list of things my fans wanted me to say for $100.”

Just listened to this on iTunes, and it is fucking AMAZING. I hope it made you guys as happy to record as it made me to listen. A wonderful escape from studies and training and I’m so grateful. <3

That said, I'd rather have the special discussion on BotW when Gavin's played it than without him, personally. Just because I like listening to him and the dynamic you all have together. But more content from you is always good by me!

    • George

Great idea! I like the thought of a spoiler-cast for Zelda: BotW. They have done them for Dark Souls 3 and The Beginners Guide.

Oh and sorry to repeate myself but Laura Jim the Beginners Guide Spoiler-cast was amazing work. That podcast was one of those pieces of art that will stick with me for a long time.

  • Jecht342 .

I have a middle ground position between Gav and Laura on Far Cry Blood Dragon. I think the tutorial joke is hilarious the first time. However, people play games more than one time. When I went back to play that a few years later, that joke just didn’t land. It was frustrating to have to deal with that nonsense.

    • darksteel6

I generally do not play games more then once actually(unless there are different paths, endings or choices like in say Wolfenstein the New Order) I found the tutorial funny as hell.

I thought Simpsons Game was funny for the most part, though some of the jokes didn’t land.

Eat Lead: the Return of Matt Hazzard, was OK, though at the end it kind of got away from being a video game parody and just stared doing random jokes here and there.

Comic Jumper was a really funny game with some good fourth wall humor, I was introduced to that game thanks to Angry Joe.

I found Duke Nukem Forever pretty funny overall, though it did admittedly fall into the trap of “doing the thing you’re supposed to be parodying” at some points(I.E. the “I hate Valve Puzzles” bit).

  • MG_Salad

Laura’s reviewing Persona 5? Please give it at least a 7.5 so my fragile ego can be vindicated. (Only kidding!)

    • Christopher Hammond

Getting ready with a DDOS if it scores under 8.

      • FireEmblemFan

I’m already printing out the wanted, dead or alive posters to hang out in the community as we speak, if it gets under a 9.9/10

        • InfamousDS

Are we planning to attack LetsPlayVideoGames or TheJimquisition? This freelance stuff makes it so hard to blindly attack with hate.

  • boylandtheliberator

Want to say to you guys I hate you, I will have run with us in my head for the next two days at work. On Zelda its a series I like without thinking Nintendo is a good company and make bad business decision. However a question as someone who hasn’t play it does it matter what the weapon is for how much time it lasts? Like a knife lasts for 20 fights whioe a sword lasts 2 fights

    • drownedsummer

      No not especially.

      • boylandtheliberator

That’s a bit shitty as usually they want the good weapons to last shorter than the bad weapons how weapon damage systems usually works

        • drownedsummer

I think you’ve misunderstood me. A spear with the same level of durability will last as sword a with the same level of durability.

          • boylandtheliberator

Ok its just like in fallout you weapon depending on what it is ahs different staminas, seems like from what youa re saying tis not the case.

    • Christopher Hammond

A Knight’s Broadsword and a Knight’s Halberd will have the same durability. A Royal Broadsword and Halberd will be higher durability than the Knight’s stuff but the same as each other, then you can get modifiers within weapon classes.

  • Derrek

What was the sexual assault joke in styx? I mean if its a joke I dont really see the problem

    • Well, there’s studies that show some sexual assault and rape jokes can enforce a sexual assaulter’s view on things. Like, for instance, you tell a rape joke and the joke is suppose to be “funny” because it’s “shocking”, right? But some serial assaulters can take it as it’s “funny” because the person got raped. Rather than the subject matter being “taboo” thus “funny”, it’s “normal” and thus “funny”.

To take a similar subject matter, like, you tell a racist joke and you, personally, may think it’s funny because you know not all black people or hispanic people or whoever are like that. It’s funny because it’s stupid pretty much. BUT you get racists who think the joke is funny because they actually think that way, so it’s funny because it’s true. Not only is the joke enforcing their world view, they also think that you think the same way they do thus validates them more.

That’s what a lot of sexual assault and rape jokes do.

      • Derrek

The problem with that logic is that means that you shouldn’t joke about anything

        • Nah, it just matters more about how a joke is delivered and the punch line. You can tell a rape joke and have the punchline be that the rapist is scummy rather than the person got raped, ya dig? It makes the rapist the punchline rather than the rape. No one likes being the butt of a joke.

You just have to think “is the joke ‘funny’ because it’s ‘shocking'” or “does it have an actual point beyond being shocking”.

          • Jason

A good way of putting it is “punch up, not down”. Make the people who have the most power and are least frequently the butt of jokes the butt of yours and you’re probably okay. But if you’re joking about a situation and making the people with the least power in the situation the butt of your joke, it’s a bad joke.
Rape and the holocaust are two subjects oft considered taboo for humour. But yeah, you can- for example- joke about how absurd our culture is about rape, or about certain individuals with power in certain scenarios, etc. You’re not punching down at someone who’s already punched at a lot.

Also, if you’re not coming from a place of experience and understanding, maybe avoid jokes about sensitive subjects altogether. Listen and learn more first. Well-informed jokes are far better than those made in ignorance.

          • Terriosaurus Hex

Many may not agree, but I always found Frankie Boyle understood the depth, balance and understanding to utilise controversial humour. Also that it has its limits, which may be why he has quietened down a lot lately. He is actually very left-wing. But being a scot, you’d be an idiot to be on the right.

          • Remus

I personally think you should be able to joke about everything. You are not protected from peopling calling you horrible, or saying your joke sucks, but you should be able to make the joke.
Watch some of the bits by John Cleese, jokes will always insult someone or something. And jokes are what we use to put things into context. Things are funny because they are ridiculous, wrong or weird.

It’s the same problem I have with the concept of trigger warnings and safe spaces. Stopping the conversation, sticking fingers in your ears and going “lalalala” and pretending the problem doesn’t exists will solve nothing. You have to be able to adres these things, and sometimes people have to be “forced” to listen.

This does not release the responsiblity of dealing with these topics carefully and respectfully. But the vibe I’m getting from these types of conversations is the concept of ignoring the problem until it goes away and I think that is a very unhealthy attitude.

P.S. a lot of Jims jokes are sarcastic or about sex. I don’t agree there is no “shock” in that. It’s here I would like to make perfectly clear I love the podcast and most of the jokes. But I think I’m free to disagree on some of the hosts political leanings.

          • BAH!

“It’s the same problem I have with the concept of trigger warnings and safe spaces. Stopping the conversation, sticking fingers in your ears and going “lalalala” and pretending the problem doesn’t exists will solve nothing.”

No, the problem you (and I) have with those things is that they’re horribly misused by people.

          • I’m just gonna keep this short and sweet: Your reading comprehension sucks and I don’t care about your opinion.

            Bye.

          • darksteel6

I don’t think trigger warnings are inherently wrong, they are useful for people who are sensitive, and I personally think the right is far more obsessed about safe spaces(that’s basically what segregation was, safe spaces for white people) considering their recent actions.

          • Wolfie

And let’s not forget who are the ones whining about “fake news.”

I mean, they’re not entirely wrong, but not for the reasons they’re thinking, which is “I DUN WANNA BE CRITICIZED!!”

          • Chris Schwartz-Brown

They can make the joke, and Laura can criticize them for it and discourage people from playing the game if the jokes are in poor taste or not funny.

It’s almost like that freedom of speech goes both ways, it doesn’t just defend the person making the intentionally offensive joke purely for shock value, it also defends the rights of other people to call it shitty and to tell people to avoid it if it’s unfunny and unnecessary. And there’s no way that the jokes in Styx are necessary to the rest of the game, they are there to be a cheap ‘whoaaa! Look at how non-PC we’re being!’ thing. People are throwing out George Carlin or John Cleese as examples, but those people are /funny/ and know when and where to make a joke, I highly doubt the people making shit tier fantasy stealth games whose level of comedy ‘hey, this looks like a popular game, do you remember it!’ are doing anything like that.

          • darksteel6

Right, rape jokes can be funny if told correctly, George Carlin gave an example-Porky Pig raping Elmer Fudd.

        • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Or it means don’t be an insensitive dick about really fucked up, dark subjects if you have no good reason to. A shitty stealth game with no other content on the subject has no reason bringing up that subject just for a cheap shock value, especially if they aren’t actually funny about it.

    • Andrew Barloq

Definitely depends on the joke and how it’s conveyed…

  • astra

Too bad theyre so hard on the styx game

Say what you will of the writing but the gameplay is a definite improvement

  • LazyGoth

It’s kind of sad that game journalists/reviewers have to talk about having different opinions straightly like so just to convince some kiddos like some Nintendo fanboys about how it feels to be adults, I thought 2017 having different opinions is an established fact.

    • Christopher Hammond

Very sad. It’s upsetting to be a Nintendo fan when these massive fuckwits act like massive fuckwits. A lot of us were talking to some tool the other day who couldn’t accept that some people may have a different opinion about some of the Zelda mechanics. Sad time to be a Nintendo fan.

      • darksteel6

Yeah there’s one pathetic Nintendo fanboy in the Escapist forums who ALWAYS throws a goddamn temper tantrum anytime Yahtzee dares to criticize Nintendo in any way.

        • BAH!

Is it Travis? I don’t read the comments, but considering he pops up here whenever Jim dares to criticize a Nintendo game, it sounds right.

          • darksteel6

            His name is Lord Terminal.

        • Christopher Hammond

I looked up that guy yesterday. What a gigantic dickhead! Things like this really bring them out of the woodwork.

          • darksteel6

Yeah i’m hoping one day he gets banned from the forums for his incessant bullshit.

    • I think it’s this stubborn notion that reviews, in some way, are supposed to be objective. I also saw some people stating that there is such a thing as objectively good game design. Which is false, as confirmed by several friends of mine actually being game designers.

  • George

Sorry I’m only half way through the pod cast but while I was thinking about it…In reference to those kinds of moments that Jim was talking about where the medium of video games was used to deliver an experience that other media can’t.

I would suggest the opera scene in FFVI, it’s just dialogue choices and a bit of movement but it captured the feeling when you’re trying to nail a performance perfectly. Along with many of the themes of the game itself.

That’s one of the oldest examples that I am familiar with.

  • Vincent Reed

Have you thought about dispensing with the rating out of ten entirely?
If you continually have to clarify your position on your rating system (something your written review should be doing on its own anyway), then maybe the score is hindering peoples’ perception of your opinion more than helping it, and ditching the concept entirely will solve the problem.

    • Christopher Hammond

He’s spoken about why he uses the system before and his website has clear guidelines concerning what the numbers actually mean. His review is certainly crystal clear about all aspects of the game, his experience with it and how it fit his scoring criteria (he liked it). Some people just can’t accept that people think different things from them.

      • Wolfie

Plus, the whole… good games only get 8s and 9s is such bullshit. No. The way he does it, where 5 is average and scales positively or negatively in relation is the way it should be.

I mean, the whole reason we’re in this mess is because of publishers and reviewers wheeling and dealing amongst each other. You hype up our game, and we’ll continue to advertise on your site.

Or rather, more likely, you reviewed one of our games negatively, we might reconsider advertising on your site next time.

        • Christopher Hammond

Yeah, you’re right. People don’t bother taking the time to find out what a 7 actually means for him and just seem to assume that every review is scored like IGN or Game Spot.

          • Landy Alexander

The biggest problem with meta critic is that if you don’t give a score they will assign one. Read about the Washington Post ‘review’ of uncharted 4, where they wrote a negative article, not even a review, and metacritic decided it was a 40%. Washington Post got threats for ‘scoring’ the game so low.

        • Terriosaurus Hex

He’s given multiple games I love 5/10, but I understand what makes the difference of opinion and it is of no bother. Hell, a game called Rollers of the realm has an average metacritic score of around that area but I love it so for it’s cute, endearing ideas. People need to learn to not attach their self-worth to their favoured entertainment’s critic scores. People need to learn how to relax.

  • Imp Emissary

The whole show was good! >:D

7/10, would defiantly attend the next Anal Bum Party you three through.
    =w= b

  • Michelle Fishburne

FFXIV Goblins are some of the best goblins.

They have the Goblin Illuminati who goes to war over a cheese recipe, and summons the greatest Primal of all, the living holy mechanical time-travelling fortress god Alexander.

    • InfamousDS

They were based on FFXI Goblins, who just strolled into cities like they owned the place and set up shops despite a massive war less than 20 years earlier that made everyone hate the non-Human tribes.

Final Fantasy goblins, when they aren’t trash mobs, are badass.

      • Michelle Fishburne

Never played XI, but I forgot to mention Bayfrox, the (feeeemale) goblin member of a legendary hero company!

  • ENAY

Speaking of Matt Hazard, the Contra style sequel “Matt Hazard : Blood Bath And Beyond”
sequel had the best 4th wall ending I can remember in any game.

I couldn’t seem to find it on youtube, but basically after defeating the final boss and stopping the evil brain trying to blow up earth.
Matt Hazard, hesitates, walks up to the self destruct system and basically says something like “Ah well, fuck it. It’s not like they’re going to let us make another one of these anyway”.
Smashes the button, and the ending is just the end of civilisation.

Would recommend checking it out if you can find it, it really made me chuckle.

  • sillyskeleton

Yeahh, that was a weird episode. I enjoyed the part about the games. All 10 minutes of it. And I wouldn’t mind some of whatever Jim’s on.

  • Danny

Sniffing for Big Hearty Truffles as “The Pig-Boy of Hyrule”? PLEASE tell me you were wearing the Bokoblin Mask during this process!

  • Eric

Jim! – please don’t put any awesome Nier moments at the end of a Jimquisition any time soon so it doesn’t spoil anything really sweet. Too many games game out this month and I imagine a fair number of folks (myself included) haven’t been able to pick it up yet but want to.

  • Nitrium

Did I hear “Movie Defence Force” is coming back (it was hard to make out, but that’s what it sounded like to me). If so, AWESOME. If you bring in Conrad in some capacity, DOUBLY so. Please tell me you’re keeping the original intro music!?

    • Forrest Kayssen

I imagine if it did come back, it would be called something different and probably have a different presentation. Unless The Escapist allow him to use the series again, that is.

    • drownedsummer

While slightly different I’ve always seen Spin-Off Doctors as being an extension of it.

  • Marcusss

Ok, I’m am confused. because of these words:
“(Nier) so far is an amazing game – with similiar to Zelda caveats. The map is dogshit….”

Worded like this it sounds like you are saying both Nier and BotW have a bad map. So far I can’t speak for Nier (though what I googled did look terrible)… but in the case of BotW – what? I hope I misunderstood, because BotW has a great map. One of the best I have seen in a videogame so far. It has countour lines, water depth levels, clearly defined trees and structures and everything. Reading that map is nearly sexually pleasing.
Especially after the pile of puke that are DA: Inquisition unreadable messes. And while Witcher 3’s map was much better than DAI’s they still went for the “plastic” feel that just doesn’t work well for depicting the geography.
Look, give BotW any score you want, but its map is nearly perfect. It is scientifically proven by scientists in the science lab. Don’t you dare to badmouth that beautiful thing.

(the slight level of outrage you may feel in this comment is not meant in a bad way but as an humorous overact, please people of the internet do not attack me again for daring not to agree with Jim’s opinion. If he did in fact mean it in the way it sounded, because it is possible he did not.)

    • Nutarama

I think he meant that the fact that is has caveats is the same, not that it has the same problems.

    • Gorantharon

      Probalby more like:

(NIer) so far is amazing, with (similar to Zelda) caveats. [For example] The map is dogshit…

  • Forrest Kayssen

A two hour podcast? Bwah, why can’t you guys do hour long podcasts, like you used to?

    (I’m joking)

    • Chris Schwartz-Brown

I demand to know why only two hours? I need three or more hours a week of this!

  • thegreatpumpkinking

i can’t wait to see the game score dev has been working on

  • Vaughan MacDonald

As someone who got into H.P. Lovecraft’s work hard the passed six months I really, really, REALLY hope that that Call of Cthulhu game actually has the sense of cosmic dread and horror that comes with the realisation that Humanity is utterly tiny and meaningless in the grand scheme of things that the original story had. (Lovecrafts original story, I’m not too fond of Derleth’s expanded universe because he just made everything about Cthulhu when Lovecraft came up with dozens more creatures and gods more interesting than him). My biggest fear is it’ll just be an Amnesia clone.

On that note, if anyone finds Lovecraft’s overly poetic vocabulary a bit too hard to read I strongly recommend Dark Adventure Radio Theatre. It’s not the cheapest way to get great audio adaptations of his stories in the world, but dedication doesn’t even begin to describe HPLHS’s production value. Well worth the price tag, especially for the physical CD’s.

    • Muddy Scarecrow

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Cthulhu stopped being scary once he became a plushie. =/ I’m much more interested in Hastur the King in Yellow. I love the idea of a play that drives people insane just by watching it.

      • Wolfie

You can’t deny the sheer versatility of Nyarlathotep though. It could be used in so many ways.

        • Muddy Scarecrow

Oh I love Nyarlo! He’s my second favorite Lovecraft being! The idea of a creature that looks different depending on the region it’s in is pretty awesome.

      • Vaughan MacDonald

To me it’s more of how Derleth made EVERYTHING include him when he tried to connect all of Lovecraft’s original idea into this huge cluster fuck singular lore and EVERYTHING is about Cthuhlu in some way, when in the original story he’s just a vanguard of the Old One’s return. Perfect example, The Elder Things were the first living race to inhabit earth, then the Flying Polyps arrived on earth before the bodies of the Great Race of Yith evolved, followed by the Mi-Go etc etc. Derleth felt it was necessary to shoehorn in the Cthulhu Spawn in really early in earth’s timeline to make them seem more important than they actually are. He called them ‘Cthulhu Spawn’ too, which just goes to show you how little he thought any of through.

        • Muddy Scarecrow

Think they’re called Starspawn in the Arkham Horror board game. Which if they’re the same thing I’m thinking of is a much better name. That game is how I know most of this. =3

  • Muddy Scarecrow

I miss ask fm so much. I’m very happy to hear we may be getting a successor. I just wanna warn you people may take your comments on policing harassment the wrong way. Hell I KNOW they will. Idiots who have such hate boners for you love to take things you say or do out of context so they can make you look bad. One idiot thinks you laugh at people getting punched for “having different political views” because you like seeing Richard Spencer get punched. Cuz yeah. Promoting white power and racial cleansing is considered a political view now. That is a sneaky bullshit tactic and I am NOT a fan.

    • Chris Schwartz-Brown

Well, those people should fuck off, who cares if they feel welcome on the new site or not?

      • Muddy Scarecrow

Oh no I’m not at all defending them. I can give a fuck less. I’m just saying people have loved taking Jim’s actions out of context. Someone thinks Jim advocates doxing because of an offhand joke he and Adam Sessler made at SGC.

  • James LaValle

Just because I want to prove that people do in fact listen that long to you guys spouting off about dynasty warriors and Tommy wausau (I fucking died when you said “you’re tearing me apart laura”), please do more 2 hours long podcasts. Spinoff doctors is 2 hours long and trust me, listening to conrad talk about king Burt Reynolds will never ever get old, but I listen to these things in my car on the way to school, which is an hour one way, so it always bums me out that it ends by the time I get here and I have nothing to listen to on the way back (though of course I can and do replay the whole thing, but it’s not quite the same). So yeah, make them longer if and when you can, cause I love these things to death and you guys make me laugh my ass of daily. Except now I haven’t been able to get the idea of water drying off jim’s ass for over a week….

  • Asari

I’ll be honest. I think this is the best episode of the podcast yet.

  • Benj

Thanks for finally acknowledging your weird pronunciation of “Automata”.

I don’t actually care about what the “right” way is, I was just going a bit nuts thinking that I was the only one who thought it sounded werd!

    • CaitSeith

It sounds like Nier Tomata. For a while I thought it was a running joke.

      • InfamousDS

NiER: Automato was a running joke, but it was simultaneous to the actual not knowing how to say it.

        • Chris Schwartz-Brown

          Near a tomato.

Who doesn’t like being near tomatoes?

      • circularlogic88

I kept hearing Nier Raw Tomatah

    • Otherhand

There is a definite right way. It’s the plural of “automaton” (or-TOM-uh-ton), so it needs to have the stress on the second syllable and then a short “a” sound: or-TOM-uh-ta.

It’s a pathetic thing to care about, but Jim is always making my brain do a tiny scream with his pronunciations. There are so many words where he dives the wrong way on how to say it, or comes up with some completely baffling pronunciation that I’ve never imagined before. I wouldn’t say it drives me mad exactly, or even that it’s like someone shoving a fork in my brain. You know the little sporkish plastic forks that you sometimes get with a boxed salad? It’s like one of those is prodding my brain’s surface. Gently raking the bumps.

      • Benj

Yeah, but that’s the thing, why wouldn’t it be said like automation (which is or-to-MAY-shun) rather than like automaton?

Or maybe there’s a Jesus allegory in there somewhere (it’s Japanese so probably not) and it’s a portmanteau of automaton and stigmata referring to the mark of a robot’s sacrifice.

…this is the a snapshot of the debate that’s been going on inside my head every time Jim has been saying automata the last few weeks.

        • Otherhand

I will punch you in the kidneys

          (Ok not really)

(might gently rake the surface of your kidneys with a plastic salad fork)

          • YoDude

I thought the right pronunciation is awh-TOM-uh-tuh

          • Otherhand

            It is.

But other people are pronouncing it as “OR-tom-AY-tuh”, and I think that deserves prison time

  • I feel as if Jim is starting to sound happier on the podcast again. Am I the only one who felt that?
It was a fantastic episode, I was in tears laughing while doing the dishes at 2am

    • thegreatpumpkinking

your not the only one to, his voice sounded like if i could do back flips i would be

    • James LaValle

I did notice that, although I’m also pretty sure he admitted to being baked throughout the episode so that explains it lol. Which is fine of course, it’s entertaining as hell to listen to Jim talk everyone’s ear off and admit that he’s running his mouth but no one wants to stop him. Whatever he was on, I want more episodes like this.

      • YoDude

Lol he did seem baked. Indica strain I’ll bet. I imagine it helped with the back pains he had a while ago too.

        • James LaValle

I mean, when I said “baked”, I just mean he admitted in the episode to be on perscription medication for anxiety disorder, an affliction I share with him and take medication to alleviate myself. And because of that, I agree with Jim when he says that when you take those kind of meds, you give not one single fuck; you basically feel like you’re curled up next to a warm fire and everything just feels cozy.

    • I can definitely say I’ve felt more energetic since the Digital Homicide thing, and I’ve been on some unrelated systems for treating my general anxiety that might be helping me give less of a fuck.

Got some exciting content plans coming. I am really happy about the future, especially post-Greenlight.

      • George

I look forward to the new ideas and content.
        <3

Also, I would (humbly) suggest that since the Green Light Good Stuff series was very good and had such a positive and tangible effect on the art form and industry of video games that may be worth it to re-imagin it in a new form post "green light."

Continuing the trend of building up those who actually do deserve to built up. 🙂

  • faeyr

I think Laura was a bit of a flirt on this one, and it made me smile. This episode was a goody.

  • Drake Warnock

What a good episode to listen to drunk.

    • Sperium3000

Indeed, no better way to listen to drunk than with a piping hot glass of Jim Sterling.

  • merdinus

This episode was cucking awesome. More please

  • Captain Pipsqueak

That two hours felt like one hundred and twenty minutes!

  • Sperium3000

You’re the first people I hear saying the graphics of Nier Automata aren’t that great, which is odd. Maybe it’s because you’re coming off Zelda and Horizon, as opposed to the people who played the Japanese version (Which had English out of the box anyway) before those games and were like “sugoi desu”-ing all over.

    • There’s just something about the color filtering in both the Nier and Drakengard games that makes me feel a little alienated.

      • cerpin

I suspect Yoko Taro would say that’s the point. But that’s a whole can of worms.

      • Sperium3000

I’ll be totally frank with you. I never noticed it. I’m not even disagreeing with you, I know that’s totally a think, but I swear on me mum I never noticed there were filtering until you said it. I had to go check it.

I watched Total Biscuit’s port report on Nier and I thought the game did look kind of dull and gray, and i’m usually someone whose not bothered by that kind of aesthetic(I thought F.U.S.E. looked pretty good honestly).

        • Forrest Kayssen

The original Nier had pockets of color, Like the green field near your home town, or the massive golden pyramid city you visit later on, or the blue of the ocean in the port town. But there was a lot of metal and stone grey dullness in between.

But the filters were always a bit soft, and made the game feel like the graphics were worse than they were. Nier, to me, reminds me of the foggy CG cutscenes you’d get in games of the early PS2 days.

This must be a major contender for the Top NSFW Podquisition title ever! The content itself was also pretty good.

Gavin does this podcast for the power.

Well it took me two attempts to get through but I am very pleased with the quality of your podcastery.
Also, good to see support for crossdressing! Let men look pretty 2017.

If the new message board works with Tapatalk I will be very happy.

Personally this has been my favorite episode of the Podcast so far. It took the two elements that I love about this show (just you guys fucking around and serious game discussion) and balanced them perfectly. I think I’m actually gonna save this episode on my phone for when I’m feeling depressed and just need something to help even myself out.

Most incoherent podcast ever. BEST PODCAST EVER!

Hey Laura I’m really interested in your article knowing anime the whole cross dressing thing is often treated as a joke in Japan. (not to say here in America we have a clean history of that) Even if I look at a show like Ranma 1/2 (while i do love the show manga) its mostly seen as a way to get Ranma into CRAZY situations. I look at other things from Japan often cross dressing is synonymous with pervert (or hentai for you other weebs out there). I don’t know if you know about it but there’s another manga called Boku Girl that I adore that finished its run recently. Haven’t got to rest of it. On the surface it’s your ecchi harem but is really well written though many say the ending was anticlimactic or rushed. even still one of my favorite pieces and all of my friends i got to read got hooked on it. Anyways I’m interested in finding your article currently looking it.

If you’re interested in a better example of a anime/comic treating trans issues a bit more seriously Paradise Kiss is better.
Although it’s not the focus, Isabella is Trans and reactions to her are a part of her development as a character.

      • MasterDraterra

        really now that sounds intriguing

        • George

It’s very good, it covers the gambit from being exposed casual transphobia to her coming out to her ideas on love.

BUT like I said she’s not the main character.

“Fuck you, you’re singing in the middle of the show, I’m not syncing you up.”
-Laura, no where near halfway through the podcast.

  • TheOneWhoSucks

The way I’ve always seen things, if you’re not staying on the subject of games for the entire show, then there hasn’t been enough going on to comment on. I’d rather listen to you three just enjoying yourselves than trying to force game talk for an hour.

Your chemistry with one another is wonderful and keeps me listening far more intently week to week than staying on the topic of games.

  • EXTREMEPOSTY O

Haven’t heard the full podcast yet. In terms of games that provide the option to modify your HUD i feel that the new doom game and far cry primal have good customization options , at least on pc. Haven’t played the console versions so i can’t say if they have those options.

  • Maybe Not a Robot

Jumping in late, not sure if anyone has touched on this in the comments:

HZD has three options for the HUD: Default, Dynamic, and Custom.
In Custom, you can turn off nearly every single HUD option including the compass. You can even turn off the Override bar graphic, and enemy awareness indicators. It gives you the “always off” option for many things, which means it will never show up even if it is activated somehow.

You can actually play the entire game without seeing anything on screen if you also choose not to track quests.

Obviously any given player will want to fine-tune what works for them. And, if you want to see any of the HUD stuff, you can swipe your finger over the PS4 touch pad to show them for a brief moment.

Sorry for the text wall, I just wanted to expand on it for anyone who was wondering.

I haven’t listened in a while. Just fell off for reasons unknown.

I have listened to this one three times.
