The main poblem with people playing The Surge is they play it like Dark Souls – that was my main mistake. Blocking and jumping/ducking is amazing here and ACTUALLY viable, as well as other defensive and offensive options, compared to Dark Souls’ r1/roll spamfest. Combat wise the game is really good. SPOILER I guess Laura talks about the Black Cerberus boss. If you kill P.A.X. bots “the right way” the boss’ regeneration is almost non-existent. SPOILER ENDS Other than that a lot of critisism about the design and difficulty is things that are perfectly applicable to Dark Souls (1 shots,… Read more »

Actually, PETA just does their dumb video game stuff to trick ya’ll into talking about them, and reminding people that they exist. Which is a damn shame, because there are much better Animal Rights Activists Groups out there, but everyone is always talking about the shitty one that euthanizes pets it “rescues.”

Whoa. woah….WHOAH… Mario’s hat had eyes in that trailer??? Don’t be putting this kinda heavy shit on me now, dude. I have to check for eyes on everything from now on, whatever will my psychiatrist say?

Jim, Haven’t you heard about Hollow Knight yet? I’ve never seen you mention it so far, and I have a feeling you would absolutely love it. It’s a metroidvania Soulslike with incredible hand-drawn graphics, sounds right up your alley and it’s SO GOOD! I’m going to post about it everywhere and I can’t imagine a scenario where it wouldn’t be relevant, it’s another incredible 2017 game.

To be fair on Sonic Boom changing direction (And nothing else) – That wasn’t developed by Sonic Team. This is the first game by Sonic Team game since Lost World.

lol, Gavin doesn’t get the sexist innuendos between men and women and awkwardly defends himself. It’s like calling a man a slut…. it’s usually more of a compliment and/or funny, call a woman it (unless you’re female friends use it endearingly) and you’re denigrating her sexuality.

YoDude

There’s a weight behind calling a woman a slut that isn’t found in calling a man one.

It makes sense. It’s less a double standard and mire an issue of civility.

Manwhore or fuck boi personally annoy me. Especially fuck boi because it’s usually being said by the types of girls who are actually sluts.

I found Christo the Hedgehog and I even scored maybe the coolest video of myself ever. I strongly urge everyone to check it out on YouTube, this little kid has made a masterpiece (please be kind to him, he’s just some random little dude). No Arianwen the Hedgehog unless I’m not looking proper. Please let me know if y’all find one, my daughter would be stoked. Great episode, guys, thanks for your service.

Hey Jim, constructive feedback time!
Could you and Laura please keep the opening banter shorter? Last week was especially egregious as it went longer than 10 minutes and the whole ghost bit was painfully unfunny to me (though Gavin got a solid laugh out of me. Thanks Gav!). This week was only slightly better but still not as funny as classic goofs from older episodes (like the shit eclair underwear) and dragged on a bit.
Just an idea so feel free to ignore this comment if you see it at all!

I sort of agree. Not that I don’t like their sense of humour, but it was kind of exasperating for them to say ‘Alright, let’s steer back on track’ while steering off track once more, almost simultaneously.

Yeah I think it’s really getting out of hand lately.

Aw. I hoped they would talk about the whole Bioware Montreal thing a bit.

vexer

Yeah I was hoping they would talk about that as well Square Enix ditching I/O Interactive.

Nitrium

The “no more Mass Effect sequels” and “no more Deus Ex sequels” were surely the two biggest news items of the week(?). I haven’t listened yet, but I’m amazed they didn’t discuss this.

vexer

The “No More Deus Ex” thing was announced months ago and Jim actually did talk about it on the podcast

Fred Davis

Of course, the only reason they would cancel sequels to those two series is if they were planning to roll them together to make Deus Effect, which splits gameplay between “historical”, FPS based, gaming set after the first Deus Ex’s Helios Ending (where you play Adam Jensen’s head in a jar with little spider legs), and a third person shooter/dating sim set after Mass Effect 3’s Control ending where you play a new recruit aboard the pirate ship of a peg legged, hook-for-a-hand eye patch wearing elderly Tali’Zorah narrr Zayyah, and have to peice together the old thingie they had… Read more »

Deux Ex is Eidos, not I/O Interactive (I get them confused too).

Nitrium

Yeah, I meant Hitman, not Dues Ex. I was indeed very confused. Anyway, this year is taking a lot of AAA franchise scalps.

drownedsummer

Yeah but Deux was put on hiatus a few weeks back as well.

drownedsummer

Both are on hiatus rather than outright dead but if anything happens with either I don’t see it happening for awhile.

The Deus Ex sequels thing, okay that’s pretty big news, but Mass Effect already got at least one more game than it deserved (personally I’d argue it got three more games than it deserved).

It’s hilarious how the last time Jim brought up the over-evolution of Sonic, he even explicitly stated that (obviously) it’s not a good thing if a series gets samey and stale, but that the Sonic games never reach that point because they keep feeling it necessary to change the wheel each time without developing what they get right, and wouldn’t ya know it the Sonic die hards all started in on how Sega doesn’t want Sonic to get stale. Self-awareness… because who needs it when we have the internet, right Sonic fans?

vexer
Member

I think Sega’s approach is a valid one, i’d rather each Sonic game stand out on its own rather then the series get tiresome and stale like Mario has become IMO

Chris Schwartz-Brown
Member

Except Mario hasn’t had a game anywhere near as bad as Sonic ’06, or Sonic Boom, or Sonic Unleashed….

Consistent quality is better than taking a scattershot approach and half the time producing garbage, and iterating on an idea is fundamentally better game design than burning each good game to the ground to start over.

vexer
Member

I don’t think Sonic has ever “produced garbage”.

At least Sega never released a 60 dollar level editor.

I like how each Sonic game was different.

So many shows sync up song lyrics perfectly with the visuals (Sons Of Anarchy being one example) that it pisses me off that record companies can be so pedantic. But it’s nothing new. The music industry has been on this train for decades.

I wonder if that’s why Ride to Hell got pulled from Steam, as I know it uses the Rival Song song “Pressure and Time”.

Jim stated he didn’t know how regular it would be.

Alan Wake needs to be around forever, because that is the closest thing we have to playable Stephen King. The gameplay could have been better, sure, but overall it’s such a great, ahem, *cinematic* experience (god I hate using that word).

Sperium3000
Member

Why? Just because David Cage uses it wrong doesn’t mean it’s not applicable. Like, Platinum games are cinematic, and they’re great for it.

Anton
Guest

It’s just disgusting by association, nothing inherently wrong with it.

Neto Houraisan

Ugh, Alan Wake is easily my most hated game of all time (up to this point, at least). I’ve raged at several games for various reasons, but no other game has made me feel just as straight up miserable while playing it as Alan Wake did. The story was also total shite with a completely nonsensical ending. So to the fact it’s getting pulled, as much as I’m usually against this sort of move from the industry, I can’t help but to think “good riddance”. Fuck that game. Also, it would be hilarious if Laura goes into E3 expecting them… Read more »

A little late sadly with the warning for Alan Wake, seeing as it has already been removed from GOG and I assume Steam as well. Monday the 15th seems to have been the last day it was on sale. You also have the other end of the spectrum where the Devs do patch out the offending music, but then do it the lazy way with steam and patch it out of copies of the game purchased when the music was included. I recall one of the GTA games doing this, but I’m unsure which since I never played those games.… Read more »

That was San Andreas, Vice City also had songs removed, but with that game if you bought it before the music got patched out, you got to keep the original version of the game.

Molerat

That’s good to know. Either I originally misheard when it first happened, or was mistaken in my memory then.

diehardfast

I hope Remedy can sort out the Alan Wake thing soon, cause that really is a damn good game and it’s a real shame it has to leave Steam because of ridiculous music rights issues. Far too many things have been screwed over because of music licensing issues(I.E. TV series like The Drew Carey Show not getting all of its seasons on DVD, The Steam, 360 and PS3 versions of San Andreas and Vice City having certain songs removed) Hope you can get your Xbox One fixed, cause Phantom Dust is an underrated gem that deserved better, I hear that… Read more »

Wow, that was long. Thankfully I made it to the Andrew Dice Clay bit ’cause I had no idea who he was. Thanks for mentioning Ford Fairlane, that movie is solid fucking gold. Definitely on my ‘watch every coupla years’ list. Great impression, JS, I would have loved a ludicrous quote. Good episode. Thanks very much.

Could be Dying Light, but it could also be Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst.

Psst. Jim. You don’t need an Xbox One to play Phantom Dust; it’s on Windows 10 as well.

diehardfast

Too bad the Windows store sucks apparently, i’ve seen no reason to get Windows 10 yet, the changes they’ve made do not sound very good to me.

Asuterisuku

You may be right, but it’s still a better option than bothering with a console that has no system selling exclusives.

diehardfast

Considering how much some people hate the Windows store, one could argue that something like Halo Wars 2 might as well be console exclusive.

Also I personally view exclusives as inherently anti-consumer and I don’t really consider Sony having so many exclusive games as a good thing despite how much I enjoy some of them.

Concubinary Code

I don’t know if this is the case for Jim’s Xbox but mine wouldn’t turn on either. It turns out it was an issue with a faulty power brick and once that was replaced it was fine.

This is clearly inferior to Disqus. It was always going to be, because Disqus is pretty much the best forum system around. No image uploads, no sorting of posts by popularity, no live updates… this is OBJECTIVELY [ducks] just not as good.

drownedsummer

There is also the lack of direct registration and logging in with social media then actively links to that profile. I see that as the biggest problem with the new comments section.

Anton

My big issue is the lack of live updates that Disqus had. I prefer the more lively chatroom interface.

Alien: Covenant was a horrible disappointment. It seems like Ridley Scott wanted to really continue the concepts of Prometheus, Fox said he had to make an Alien film, so he decided to piss all over both properties as a show of supremely petulant spite. I gave Prometheus a chance but Ridley’s reputation is garbage as far as I’m concerned.

YoDude

I seen it. I recall it being pretty decent. But I’ll be honest I seen it while somewhat stoned and that can even make Spin Off Doctor movies be watchable.

vexer

Considering how mediocre Prometheus was, I can’t blame Fox for not wanting Covenant to be anything like it.
