Podquisition Episode 133: There Will Be No Seaman Puns In This Week’s Title

Is Seaman coming back? We can only bloody hope. It’ll be more interesting than Far Cry 5 outrage.

Elsewhere, we talk about the lifespan of jokes, and we chat about Rime, Friday the 13th, and Tekken 7.

I’d love to see a Jimquisition on the overcomplicated showcase of anime-cliches and poor storytelling that is Kingdom Hearts.

Apart from the many graphs people have made to explain character relationships (why does everyone have so many doppelgangers!?!), theres one thing that neatly illustrates the head-scratching Kingdom hearts lore to me:

In Kingdom Hearts, people are made up of Heart, Body, and Soul

Heartless are beings manifested from the darkness in peoples hearts. Nobodies are the animated, leftover bodies from those who become heartless.

So, in other words, Heartless are ALL heart, and have no bodies. Nobodies are ALL body and have no hearts.

I like when Gav talks music. I always appreciate how varied his tastes are. Anyone who can talk about his own genres and then discuss the plus and negatives of pop is a musician to the core.

Thank God for Gav and his music breaks m/

The whole thing about FC5 is it’s actually based on “Militiamen” who are American citizens who actually engage in armed protests. There was a recent standoff in Oregon where a group of armed men actually held up Malheur National Park for about a month.

The idea of Americans being terrorists doesn’t sit well for your average blue-collar hick who clings to the idea of “patriotism” because there is nothing else in the middle of nowhere. Never mind the fact that the KKK was a terrorist organization supported by it’s citizens for a century.

I think we need to address just how far Laura appears willing to go to destroy gaming. She not only 3d printed the PS4 slim, she also forced Sony to release her design later. She faked all those switch designs then snuck into Nintendo’s offices and replaced all their plans with her ones. Now, she hasn’t just photoshopped all these Rabbids/Mario crossover images, but she’s going to sneak into Ubisoft’s offices and program this game and cut together trailers and sneak then into Ubisoft’s e3 presentation, just to destroy white, heterosexual male gaming!! And she’s going to single handedly cause… Read more »

I share Jim’s frustration with the matchmaking and lack of a tutorial in Friday the 13th….but I have to say my experience in game has been largely different. I haven’t experienced a ton of bugs to the point where my experience is marred by it. I didn’t back it and went in blind and I’ve been having a blast with it.

I think it needs some fixes fast though, before the player base leaves.

The moral outrages…It’s an interesting conversation. I’m 31 now. I remember the moral panics of the 90’s and early 2000’s as well and how silly they were. Especially when it came to the music industry. I agree that there is a difference between pervious ones and the current crop comping up. Today it’s a lot less focused and seems like everyone (regardless of what nut job end of the scale they are on, left or right) is offended by something somewhere and yells about it on the internet. I remember that commercial too. It was so weird. I remember American TV (I think it was A&E) that did an investigative report on the phenomenon of goth kids in school. Like, “OMG a teenage boy is wearing makeup and leather!!! Then there was all of that “eminem swears in songs!!!” BS. It was also hilarious. But on a slightly serious note… Silly moral outrages especially today’s are to me just… Read more »

You don’t understand, it’s about killing white people! You’re not allowed to kill white people in video games, /especially/ Americans. If you do it means you are a racist who hates Christians and is trying to destroy western civilization. It’s only okay to enjoy Far Cry games when you are going to a third world country and killing a lot of brown people, if you go to a poor area in the west and kill a lot of white people it’s racist and anti-American suddenly.

Chris

Actually it’s perfectly okay to kill English white people. I mean, how many villains are given a British accent?

Oh naturally. European whites barely count, on account of being communists. As long as you’re not making villains out of real, true, honest, hard working American terrorists.

Jim is right about Bioshock. For all the shit they throw about it, the political right in this country has gotten extremely sensitive and fragile about this in a way that the liberal arts college students they like to attack can only dream of. When you can get offended by the thought ‘hey, extremist, separatist, anti-American terrorists are the bad guys’ and interpret that as an attack on your side or freak out about a game with a message as easy as ‘racism is bad and so was the holocaust’ like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, you are the problem, not… Read more »

In the weeks since playing it, I find myself wondering if maybe Prey had a bigger message that was edited out just to avoid an outrage. It would only make sense to copy the ‘Shocks in whole cloth if you were making a love letter. And while I liked the narrative as it was, some thinly veiled (blatantly obvious in some cases) political message was pretty standard for the style. A “corporations rule the planet/anti-establishment” message would have fit right in on Talos I, especially with the outcomes of some of the side content. Maybe that’s why it had mixed… Read more »

Having not played Prey I can’t guess as to the message specifically, although with that kind of dystopian ‘corporations run the future’ sci-fi it’s not hard to guess what it might have been. But given what I’ve heard about the last chapter and the ending from people who have played it it sounds like there might have been some rushed changes. Whether that was them running out of time for the ending or someone testing an ending that didn’t land well and having to rush in to change it obviously we can’t say for sure. But it’s not out of… Read more »

I can confirm, without spoliers, that the near-ending chapter and the ending is only good if you just accept what they tell you is happening at face value. I did, many others did not, and I am not naive enough to say they are wrong for their interpretation. I was actually going to get more than just one ending, but I figured my choice and outcome was good enough. Although I did feel that everything that started happening when the backtracking starts in full force felt a little rushed. Disappointing to see that Friday the 13th is shit, (at least the multiplayer is), maybe the single player will at least hopefully be decent when that comes out. While MS building multistreaming into their service is indeed a nice thing, the reality is there’s already multiple website that can do this for Twitch clients very easily, and all they’d need to do is pick one, buy it, and build a quick linking mechanism into Twitch’s UI. So good on MS for recognizing the popularity of the idea, but it’s too little, too late. The fact that somehow you think the important part of that was to refute the comment about Xbox Live and not the fact that you have the argument style of an angry 12 year old who thinks that constant swearing makes you ‘edgy’ and ‘cool’ really sums up why no one here likes talking to you. You contradict yourself in the same sentence. Passing on Rime isn’t a big deal (I presume you don’t care about it, and if memory serves you though Team ICO is in general overrated), but passing on Heavy Rain was worthy enough of getting an honorable mention many many years after its release and remastered release.

Never mind that being afraid of depicting child abductions is a legitimate fear for a corporate brand, unless they knew the full extent of how it was portrayed and could definitively state it didn’t condone them in any fashion. Couple things now that I’ve listened: Firstly, Jim clearly doesn’t know KH lore in all the gritty details. If he did, he would be even more furious. I deeply love the series, and not in the ironic “best fan ever” angle that Jim takes. I once painstakingly explained the naming conventions and wrote a primer for someone so they could jump into KH3 on this very site. But Nomura can just fuck right off with his nonsense. He’s the reason FFV13 was delayed until it became XV (he rewrote the scenario several times, once even made it a musical), the reason why most SE characters are so heavily over-animated and over-designed, the reason why it will be 15 years between KH2 and KH3 with actual plot critical… Read more »

I agree with you on Nomura…I wish he would fuck of with his nonsense too. I speak as a former hard core FF fan but when he started gaining prominence in the design and even direction of the series there was a noticeable decline.

While I believe that the “turning point” was the movie as far as a creative direction for the company starting to decline.

The movie was when they were forced to merge with Enix and restructure the whole company. That’s my bet on when it all went downhill as well (even though I really like post-merger FF as a series and I still buy SE games more than other publishers).
Hilariously enough, KH1 was the last Squaresoft game since they closed and renamed the US branch after the merger. Maybe an omen?

See, I like FF13, FF13-2 and Lighting returns (mostly for game play). I just find that it’s not connecting with me in the same deep emotional way that the other pre movie/ pre “Nomura heavily influenced” games are. I know that Nomura has been around for decades and I know it’s not all his fault but to me it feels like the “magic is gone.”

It may not be fair to say but FF1 FF6, FF7 and Chrono Trigger are true classics in the medium of video games. But I don’t think we’re ever going to get something like that again.

Given how vehement Jim’s attitude about the KH thing is shown to be, it’s rather easy to trollishly imagine him mistakenly overstepping a bit and briefly devolving into attacking people from the fairly hard-to-understand demographic who do genuinely like *everything* that series has ever done, even though I know he’d never actually mean to do that.
