Podquisition Episode 136: Mario The Soul Catcher

On this week’s episode, Nintendo tries to clarify that Mario doesn’t possess anybody. It’s worse than that.

Elsewhere, we chat about the weather, Wolfenstein, and more Nintendo bollocks.

I love how so many of the Nintendo fans are all up in arms defending the color inversion thing, and NONE of them are commenting on the part said not 10 seconds before. You know, where they talk about how the newest updates give fans nothing they actually asked for. I mean, I realize that the idea of Nintendo actually bothering to give customers something they’ve been asking for over and over and over again is the definition of insanity, but clearly their fans don’t! I mean, not being able to move your save games off the console? C’mon Nintendo… Read more »

I’d just like to point out that inverted colors on handheld devices is an accessibility feature. It makes some images easier on the eyes for people with color-blindness or high light sensitivity. PS Vita and iPhone have it too.

Really!? It’s so weird that no one else has pointed that out yet! You’d think that maybe, oh, I don’t know, three of the last four most recent threads right below this are about that very subject.

Aww, Gav. I got so sad for you. Please tell us who has long legs, I want to know.

Anyway, I really wish that Nintendo would man up with this Mario hat-throwing game, and just have Mario freak out every time he throws the hat. He should freak out, in un-accented English, and run away screaming “Never again!”

I’m sure by now you’re aware of the reason for inverted colors. What I can attest to is what a difference various color options make. You can’t understand how annoying it is to have so many color-based loot systems in games that don’t account for people like myself who have such a hard time distinguishing to them. When devs like Gearbox and CDPR include color blind modes for their games, it’s a personal and wonderful thing, and allows me to enjoy the respective looting and tracking monsters in Witcher vision, without the constant annoyance of second guessing. Unfortunately simple color… Read more »

It sure is good you explained that to them, no one else had. Definitely not the two comments immediately prior to this one. Good contribution.

Maybe you’ve already heard this at this point, but there is actually a legitimate reason for Nintendo adding inverted colours and greyscale options to the Switch: enabling either option can sometimes help people with visual impairments such as colour blindness to more easily view the screen. It’s also not exclusive to the Switch; PC’s has had the options for decades, as do phones nowadays. I get that when you first hear about it it sounds kind of silly, but for the people out there who this helps it might mean the difference between being able to comfortably play a game… Read more »

Invert colours is an accessibility accomodation which is profoundly helpful for people who have visual disorders including, for example, some kinds of colour-blindness.

I still love you guys, but laughing uproariously about it was not exactly this team’s coolest moment.

George

I laughed too because without any direct explanation offered by Nintendo this whole thing just sounded like another one of Nintendo’s pointless gimmicks.

Yeah, about as cool as laughing about trans-gender toilets.

You realise those are just regular toilets, right? Anyway, I was nodding along with all the people who’ve brought up that it’s an accessibility issue (though some are I think confusing “inverted colors” with “color-blind mode” – v. different beasts, inverted colors is more for people who get eyestrain from reading too much black-on-white text) and that Jim is a teensy bit of an asshole by accident this episode. And then I saw through that layer of things to the Nintendo Move layer below, where Nintendo is releasing this shit in a patch several months after launch; So you also… Read more »

Indeed. And it’s not like Nintendo labeled them as such on those patch notes. So saying that people should just know that inverted colors help with eye strain (not color blindness, that’s a whole different kind of accessibility that should be there but that this doesn’t cover) is kind of ridiculous.

And it doesn’t change that the switch launched without a bunch of crucial features that still need to be patched in. Because Nintendo.

It’s funny to me how people always mention Muzzy as something they watched in French, because over here (Sweden) we used to watch it in English during 2nd grade English classes.

I can still hear the echoing sound of that weird mouse princess character repeating the word “plum” over and over again…

Theres plenty of air conditioners on Amazon for £90-800. Apparently only the ones over £250 actually do anything.

Laura is pretty much right about the Xbox live crossplay thing. Phil explained it on the Giantbomb Night Show.

Actually, if you just need one room cooled, a cheap window AC should be fine. I bought one for just $110 last year, and even with it 95 outside, I can keep my room a chilly 68. And that’s with a 55″ 4K tv irradiating my face.

Of course, leaving my room to eat or use the bathroom is like stepping out into a sauna. I pretty much live a single room of my house all summer.

Gavin, I was about to type how cool and wonderful the summer here on The Great Lakes was, it’s quite nice…well apart from the fact that the water is quite high and a little scary…

Well it is..until you buy something and realize that there is a 13% tax on everything…
Also, it’s only the weather on Lake Ontario that is nice. Up in the North it’s just as cold and miserable as the rest of the country.

This makes me imagine the early WarCraft 3 cinematic in which Arthas commits his infamous assassination as having played out with Arthas wearing the Mario cap with the eyes. Maybe the hat itself was another corrupting creation of the Lich King and it’s found its way into the disjointed multiverse that makes up Mario Odyssey, and Mario isn’t quite the soul-capturer on top of things that he thinks he is.

“The headpiece that you bear was forged and empowered to steal souls. Yours was the first one it claimed.”

“Then I’ll-a make do without one. What-a is the Lich King’s will?”

I don’t think we will be seeing trading in Pokemon Go any time soon. I have been noodling over how they might implement it and there are a couple of big glaring reasons why they might not. The biggest is the 3rd party cash market problem, especially in a game targeted (ostensibly) at kids. As soon as trading can happen, multiple real money exchanges will almost certainly pop up, and they tend not to have the most above board business practices. As soon as money can be made by selling high value Pokemon then the hacking will shift from annoying… Read more »

I wasn’t going to comment again, but I’m sick of people calling Zelda an open-world RPG. It is not. It has no RPG mechanics aside from the most literal interpretation of “playing a role in a game”. No EXP and no leveling system alone disqualify it. If we include no permanent combat item upgrades since every damn weapon is made of felt and cold piss, no skill upgrades and before you say it the tutorial/tablet and food/armor set bonuses do not count as upgrades because there is no player choice in the former and there are so many hurdles to… Read more »

What would you call Zelda, the first one?

No EXP, no Levelling system. No skill upgrades.

The same thing I’d call every Zelda in the history of the series, including Breath of the Wasteoftime. Narrative-action exploration games.

Just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it.
RPG as a purely mechanical genre descriptor has lost all meaning decades ago. But I guess summer gaming is boring enough for someone to go all Total Tophat and rant over pointless pigeonholing semantics.

TB’s idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, Zelda has never been an RPG series. The closest example is Zelda 2 in the main series, and the only actual RPG is the Warriors spin-off. The games have never had traditional RPG mechanics, many of which are still absent from BotW as I pointed out because as much as I hate it is still designed to be as close to a Zelda game as possible around the bullshit core gameplay loop of break weapons and die a lot to odds you are ill-equipped for. Genre definitions, when not a semantic dick measuring contest as favored by… Read more »

So Laura, any thoughts on Beyond Good/Evil 2 being in ‘Day 0 development’?

YoDude

TF does that even mean?

Chris Schwartz-Brown

It means that all of the times over the years they have sworn they were making it and all the previous things they’ve shown like another CG trailer and art that Ancel has teased have been lies.

Just something to keep in mind, this is a company and a project with a history of just straight up lies and there is no reason to believe this trailer is anything different. Until we actually see gameplay this doesn’t exist.

SilentPony

As in when they showed the trailer, they hadn’t even started on the game. Literally all they had was that trailer. They were on Day 0 of development.

MAybe the first trailer, a couple of years back. But if you mean the E3 trailer? No. They did a closed-doors playable demo of the rough stage the game is at, and there is now video online of the gameplay being demonstrated (roughtly 15 mins). It’s not just beginning development at all.

SilentPony
Member

Michel Ancel said after E3 and the reception the trailer got that “We now really believe that we’re going to make this game” but its still in the pre-production phase, having just been started like last week.

A small black-and-white cat

I say again: there is a playable demo. People played with it at E3. There is a video on YouTube, which I can’t link because this site never takes links, but go look for yourself. Yes, it’s basically a fancy tech demo, but you don’t get to the stage this is at in a week. There’s a ton of structural art in there, the monkey character model, all the main animations. The monkey takes over a ship and flies it around. There are the camera behaviours which change dramatically in response to what you’re doing, to emphasise scale and show… Read more »

Versus 13 showed gameplay in varying stages for 3 years before disappearing off the face of the Earth for 5 years. They didn’t enter actual production until 2012, the rest was just tech demo and scripted “gameplay”. Even if journalists got their hands on it, 15 minutes of play could be cobbled together in a week provided the artists put in real effort and the programmers managed to make stable code on the first or second pass.

AAA is at their best when bullshitting customers. Believe nothing and hope we aren’t being lied to again.

The reason I got out of Pokemon Go was too much database management. Egg hatching worked fine, which is what I got most of my joy in it from, but the need to grind dozens of pidgey into candy and evolve a few others for exp after a walk just got to me too much. As for Sony’s ‘reasoning’ for not doing . You’re speculation feels more likely than their explanation, which when it wasn’t being ludicrously corporate amounted to “We need to nanny our players more than Nintendo.” (Actually someone called them on that in an interview, specifically mentioning… Read more »
