Always love it when Sony does something dumb. Not because I’m part of the console war but because the Sonybots love calling MS “Micro$oft” (because oh yes that’s just so clever – you replaced the “s” in “Microsoft” with a dollar sign, I bow down to your amazing cleverness /sarcasm) all the while somehow apparently missing the fact that Sony is a for profit company too.

In reference to the Nintendo/Switch section and third parties NOT giving a Shit about Nintendo overall! I think its mostly down to the immaturity of Nintendo themselves – and their Fans since the N64 & on? I can understand in the Golden era of 8/16-bit that many game designers made games intended for kids, but that’s because it WAS kids that were playing games in those days! SEGA & SONY & MS have made gaming machines with 1st party titles that have evolved and matured over the years and 3rd party’s see this and reciprocate with their own style definition… Read more »

There’s always this tone of bafflement whenever people who only played Nintendo games as kids talk about stuff that other people grew up with – “People are nostalgic for a game series *I* didn’t play? INCONCEIVABLE!” Like Laura’s article on LPVG about Crash Bandicoot was literally just “anyone who likes this series is deluding themselves”. Yes, Crash Bandicoot 1 has some flaws but shitting on it just because it’s not the game YOU played as a kid is just childish. Also I can fill in the blanks on the “Nintendo didn’t do as well in the UK” part – Nintendo… Read more »

Castlevania is a top notch show. Even if you don’t normally like animated stuff I’d still recommend it.

Very well written ( not a huge shocker with Warren Ellis), great animation, voice acting is on point & there is so much going on in each scene. It also is not afraid to show demons doing things that most shows would shy away from, I won’t spoil but I had to rewatch a couple of scenes to make sure I’d seen what I’d seen.

George

I just watched last night. It was pretty good. And yeah…those demons are pretty gruesome. It’s bold. Also, the scene in the church near the end was quite well done.

What’s going to happen to this podcast if/when Soundcloud goes under? They’re in pretty dire straits right now.

It’s archived on iTunes and FistShark is hosted on libsyn, so I can only assume that we’d have access in other places. I can also only assume that the ability to listen on-site would go away until Jim finds a suitable replacement.

Aww, sweet, Jim’s back, and they’re talking about the remake of some of my favourite games of all time and my favourite game of the last few months, Crash Bandicoot: The N.Sane Trilogy! *listens* Oh. 🙁 Damnit guys, what’s the point of video game critics if you refuse to validate my already fully-decided opinions? In all seriousness, Super Mario 64 is easily way better than Crash Bandicoot 1, but it seems a little weird to me that it gets virtually no criticism for the way it obnoxiously kicks you out of the level every single time you die. Crash may… Read more »

I find it interesting that a lot of people think Mario 64 is the better game (more power to them but I don’t agree at all). The visual design of Mario 64 was and is atrocious in my opinion and doesn’t hold a candle to Crash or even other platformers of the time. I also think the character designs are awful compared to those from the Crash universe. I think Crash 2 and 3 fundamentally beat Mario 64 in a lot of ways and CTR is almost indisputably the better kart racer. Oh well, each to their own I guess.

I personally think Mario 64 is the better game, but enjoyed crash more as an experience.

Crash had character which M64 lacked.

I don’t know how to edit my original post.

M64 was regarded so much better simply because it had an analogue stick, which the PS didn’t have at the time.

Back in April I had some gallbladder issues, lots of pain, but not quite what Jim had, since I just got some morphine and was sent on my way. I had been on an LCHF diet (Low Carb, High Fat) for about two weeks when it happened, and since then I’ve made sure at least one meal a day has enough fat for the gallbladder to empty out so no stones have time to form. Luckily, I’ve had no issues since. You might wonder how I wouldn’t get enough fat on a “high fat” diet, but I’m currently testing ways… Read more »

Jim posted on Twitter about how Paul Ryan has started a new site and I believe done in a way that wasn’t meant to reveal except he put something on the site which immediately revealed his identity.

Yet at the same time brash games is still up and still shilling away for sleazy online casinos. There’s like six or seven “articles” in just the last month that are the exact format Jim exposed on here a while back. Nice to see some scumbags never change.

Edit: This was intended as a response to another comment below, not sure why it made it’s own thread.

I never really played any of the original 3 Crash games back in the day(though I did play Wrath of Cortex and liked it enough to 100% it) so I had no real nostalgia for them, but I was still eager to check them out, and I really enjoyed all three of them. I actually found the boulder levels pretty easy, for me the Crash 1 level I hated the most was “The Lost City”, as it’s one of the longest levels in the game and it’s one you have to beat without dying to get a colored gem, that… Read more »

I would actually suggest that Sony doing that was an act of over-confidence and the belief that they could clearly get away with it and expected it not to be noticed. Completly stupid at the same time as well though.

I know that, but a lot of people(Jim included) criticized that mechanic for making the game a chore to play, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the creator now thinks that particular mechanic wasn’t actually a very good idea and wanted to correct it.

I like PRO wrestling (pro wrestling = WWE. Professional wrestling = UFC(in my mind any way (triple bracket super score))) , and am happy now Jim has finally come out as a wrestling fan. Although I’m not sure if he has as I’m not that far through, but judging by the past fue ..quisitions yeah. I understand why people don’t like it, as an avid sports fan I can “get” the; “this ain’t real, so why enjoy it.” Mind set. I think your comment is really gross and I don’t appreciate what you’ve written but what I will say is that I, as with any other person, can and will have opinions about things. If you don’t agree, that’s fine, but do not call me names – it’s more than insulting, it’s downright disgusting behaviour.

As a side note, I would skip the wrestling parts if I knew how long they’d last for. I did keep hitting the fast forward button through it but it seemed to last so very long. I am entitled to an opinion you know.

I can only apologise for insulting you.
I had drank 8 pints of Guiness and think I over reacted. Not that being drunk is any excuse to call people names.

I believe I took offence by the way you said
“throwing wrestling into his creative work.”
And thought you were knocking the mans work across the board, not just with the podcast.

Again, I’m quite sorry for being a nob. But now I’ve read your post with sober eyes and have managed to state what I didn’t like about it with sober fingers.

As some one who used to make podcasts back in the day I can say with confidence that they are not that creative. Small bits of editing, clearing the sound, having A list of talking points, making sure every one sounds good (which would have been set up months if not years ago) It really is just mates having a chat. It’s definitely entertaining, but not really creative. There’s no scrips, there’s no video, no editing of the video, syncing of the audio and video. It just takes a fue hours to do, and I think it was on this… Read more »

Yeah, I’m right there with you. All I see is redneck soap opera, but given how popular it is I must be missing something.

Besides, most people have an indefensibly stupid indulgence. I enjoy the earlier Metal Gear Solid and (some 11/10 writing there), and I’m ashamed to admit I actually really like some of the Resident Evil films. I know they’re terrible, I just can’t help myself.

No reason to feel guilty about liking certain things, I enjoy those films too and I feel no shame at all. I know they don’t have great writing or anything, but there’s something to be said about a series of films that just wants to entertain people and has no delusions of being anything else beyond that.

Castlevania is 4 episodes long and ends on a teaser, since it is based on Castlevania 3. Laura is right in that it was a movie, as there is only 1 set of real opening credits and the rest were just clearly edited in.

Having watched the first three episodes I concur it is good. The plot is good and well written which is what I expect of Ellis. The voice talent is good and I like hearing Graham McTavish say something other than ‘Preacher’. But it is very clearly just a prologue to an actual series.

It wasn’t Konami but Netflix. When they picked up the project it was still being developed as a movie but they put a green light for it being a series so they had the makers chop it up into a four episode “pilot season”

Glad to hear Jim’s back in action. For Crash, I have no real nostalgia for the series (Playing the series… Twice… as a kid, and one of those times was CTR, the other was Warped, I was mostly PC gaming with Crash), and these games are holding up a lot better than I expected. Especially the use of boxes. Really like how much use they get out of boxes in the level design. The camera is bullshit, obviously, but only a couple of death levels that took two attempts at (With going for enough perfects to ramp up my lives… Read more »

You’re right, Jim. Spyro was always the better platformer trilogy. I hope it gets remastered despite how ambitious it would be to remastered with so many assets, textures, maps, music, dialogue, etc. I’d love to see Crash Team Racing remastered because the original was legitimately good.

If Sony won’t respond back whether or not to give permission for someone to make changes and improvements to Shadow of the Colossus for PS4, then he should just go ahead with his ideas anyway. Sony won’t care because they’re more into making PlayStation Store into the next Steam Greenlight.

Jake

I’m not sure agree about Spyro being “better”, they both scratched very different gaming itches for me. Crash was perfect short 5 minute burst fodder (well, 2&3, anyway) whereas Spyro was the sort of thing I’d want to invest a bit more time into.

Both were great series though and ones that built on each game with each sequel being better.

Sonic Adventure games were my favorite back in the day, though i’m willing to acknowledge that parts of them haven’t aged well(seriously who the hell thought the Big fishing levels were a good idea?)

GloatingSwine

It’s become evident that not only has Sonic Adventure not aged well (those animations, that voice acting), it was actually basically fundamentally broken in the beginning and set a pattern of broken 3D Sonic games that didn’t really get overcome until Unleashed and it was only half of that game that actually worked.

Neto Houraisan

Honestly, I think a lot of people are exaggerating the difficulty and frustration levels that Crash has. As someone who’s played the original trilogy on an emulator recently (sue me), I can say it’s definitly no Super Meat Boy or the Dark Souls of platforming or whatever. Brace yourselves for a mini-review! While Crash 1’s controls were indeed not very good, they do improve greatly in 2 and 3. Also, in most of the famous boulder levels and such, the camera zooms out considerably, so you can easily see the obstacles ahead of you (there are times, however, where you… Read more »

I never found any Crash game particularly difficult but the first one could annoy me a bit. The wall level springs to mind with the platforms you have to spin at before you can jump on them and they just added more of them in a row as it progressed, making fucking up these sections annoying because getting back up was really tedious. Also the precision jumping did become an issue for me during a couple of the boss battles due to not being abke to get into the same kind of rythm you were talking about but my dyspraxia… Read more »

Can I just take the time to say that I think it’s really shitty that the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy released without any subtitles whatsoever? It’s ridiculous, honestly.
