Podquisition Episode 140: Bird-Faced People Eating Arses

This week, we describe social media in terms of a Hell painting, and give our thoughts on Splatoon 2 and Pyre.

Meanwhile, Gav’s played more Destiny, and Pokemon Go had an event that… well… didn’t quite go.

Suddenly, Jheronimus Bosch!

I was at the exposition with nearly all of his remaining work in Den Bosch. They brought them all to Bosch’s hometown from various museums and private collectors. So very weird, and so very much worth going. You really wouldn’t think it was painted at the end of the 15th century at first.

I would buy the hell out of a game set in that sort of universe.

I was always curious to check out the stuff Bennington did with Stone Temple Pilots after they fired Scott. I’m not sure if they actually recorded anything or if he just toured with them and whether or not it was just like Talk Show.

There was an EP called “High Rise” that Chester does t the vocals on. He played some live performances too. He quit pretty soon after though to focus on Linkin Park though.

Good chat at the end. Couldn’t agree more Chester fought his fight but his demons got the best of him. People who don’t have that shouldn’t comment he wasn’t week he unfortunately has enough.

Surprised Jim or gavin didn’t bring up angry joe. Both know him fairly well and his recent career decision to annoy his fanbase seems unwise.

Re trans inclusion in DDADDS, I’m not a big fan of how they did it. There’s something about letting wearing a binder be the only way to refer to a character’s transness that really rubs me the wrong way. Nothing in the game is adjusted to fit with that decision in the cc, which honestly just makes it so foreign from my own experience that (for me, personally) it ceases to matter as inclusion. I’m very appreciative of the dialogue choice about whether Amanda was adopted or not, however – that does feel like genuine trans inclusion. Honestly I guess… Read more »

In therapy I was told that depression can’t really be cured, just treated. I still have bad days when I just have no energy. Some days are OK though. I think it’s easy to romanticize or condemn people who feel suicidal or depressed. It doesn’t really feel either way to me. It sucks but it’s something people just live with and depending how well you can cope with your mind, you get by until you don’t anymore

Can absolutely relate to this. I’ve had it pretty easy recently as I’m an better place in life than before, but there are days where it’s a struggle to get out of bed or do the most basic things. Luckily for me, my depression never takes a self-destructive form, but it’s always been there in the background and might hang around forever.

I’ve fallen way behind in Jim’s content the last couple months. Decided to check out the site on lunch break, just to see what I’ve been missing the last few weeks.

I took my break in my car, and the instant, the absolute perfect instant, I loaded up thejimquisition.com on my phone, my radio started playing Erasure.

Not just any Erasure song either, Chains of Love.

So I guess that’s the universe sending me a sign?

They mention it in the show, but it’s a painting by Hieronymous Bosch, from the ‘Hell’ panel of Garden of Earthly Delights.

I haven’t played competitive multiplayer in nearly a decade, and even then, it was just pvp matches in vanilla WoW. But, I got a Switch this week, and in the bundle is Splatoon 2. I’m both nervous and excited. The good news is that voice chat on the Switch is shit, so I don’t have worry about people kicking me because I refuse to use chat (severe social anxiety). The bad news is, I know I’m going to suck, and be that one player that ruins my team’s chances every time. I don’t know, I just kinda love the colorful,… Read more »

I was in the same boat, having not played competetive multiplayer since the early 00s. I’ve been on Splatoon 2 about a week now, and I love it. Its great fun.. There’s no voice chat, which is great. Thoroughly recommend!

I should also make a few notes on Splatoon. Now, I haven’t played Splatoon 2 yet. However, Splatoon 1 had a similar feature with the mode switches. In competitive, the mode also swapped every 2 hours. There was the tower mode and the rainmaker mode. The map depended on the mode. So it did happen in Splatoon 1 as well and I personally liked it. It made the world feel like a live event. I can understand someone not enjoying it as it gets annoying that you can’t play a mode when you want to. But the way it was… Read more »

I actually thought Linkin Park’s lyrics were better early on in their career, from Minutes to Midnight onwards I found myself getting less and less excited for new LP albums(though Hunting Party felt like a step in the right direction) “One More Light” was kind of the last straw for me, none of the songs on that album really struck a chord with me, it felt like the band was trying to ape the Chainsmokers(who I think represent everything wrong with modern pop music) a little bit too much there. Some people have been kinder to the people after the… Read more »

Linkin Park is one of my favorite bands of all time(even though I was personally not a fan of “One More Light”), so Chester’s death really hit me hard.

It would be nice if reaching out about having suicidal thoughts wasn’t fraught with risk. I’m transfeminine, and an unfortunate many of us go through a period where suicide seems like the only way out. My mistake was talking with my only friend and ex-boyfriend about it, who was also trans; I honestly believed that he would understand. Instead, he ditched me within a week, just a few days after saying “things’ll work out, we can have a long and happy friendship together.” Please don’t let that anecdote discourage anyone from reaching out and talking with friends if you’re experiencing… Read more »

I think what Laura experienced in liking the sports game mechanics of Pyre is finding a context that makes her care about those mechanics. It’s why sports games are their own little niche that’s set apart from other games. the people who buy sports games have that context, they care about the sport in real life as well. If you don’t care about the sport in real life you don’t have the context that makes you care about seeing that game represented. But if you put the exact same mechanics in a context where you do care about them then… Read more »

Yeah, the thing that came to mind for me was Total War. I can’t really play most of them. It’s not my thing at all. But put Shogun 2 in front of me and I’ll have fun with that, simply because Sengoku-era Japan is more interesting to me than any of the other settings. I’m sure some people loved Warhammer Total War when they wouldn’t even have looked at the historical ones, too. At least, that’s how I feel as an adult. But I’m somewhat into NHL (when I don’t care about any other sports), and I’m pretty sure playing… Read more »

I think a clear example of this is the people who hate strategy games or turn based RPGs, but love football management sims.

Suddenly, they enjoy grinding for experience to make their players better, and carefully monitoring a game and tweaking tactics as necessary. The gameplay loops are the same, really.

As tiring as it is to deal with, I can sympathize with the overdone social media cynicism. It’s pretty depressing to see thing like pre-order-culture, microtransaction economies, and shitty regurgitated AAA sequel series flourish – not because the publishers are pushing these things, but because us consumers are supporting them. I can definitely understand the urge to occasionally yell at my fellow gamers for putting up with and encouraging this shit. I tend not to, because it’s their money and their (objectively wrong) decision, but boy howdy do I crave dragging out my lectern and giving a speech sometimes.

Honestly this is why I retired from consoles and AAA in general.

This was a good episode, fun intro. Heavy discussion at the end. It is quite odd to me when people say that a suicidal person is weak for summating suicide. We don’t think of Cancer in those terms. Or even thinking about life and death in terms of a battle that you “win” is a misnomer. The notion that “grandma finally succumbed to her battle with cancer” makes no sense, since there is no escape from death no matter what you do or how hard you fight. I think western based cultures have lost their ability to deal with death… Read more »

That said, if you are suffering from some kind of a mental illness talk to your doctor or someone and try to get treatment.

Like any disease, there are proven treatments and ways to alleviate and even outright stop symptoms.

People are still generally ignorant when it comes to depression and mental health disorders in general. Because they’ve never had an issue like that, they assume that everyone can and should just “man up” and “act normal”.

I don’t think that’s the case, as a westerner myself i’m able to deal with death just fine. It’s just that many people hate it when a person dies in the prime of their life.

A lot of it is because people haven’t ever been on the edge like that. You don’t really know it until you’ve be been there. Even knowing someone you love did it doesn’t give you the same feeling. Not until you get to that point. And not only that, it manifests in so many ways. Despondence, mood swings happy or sad.. Even “positive” life choices could be a part of that kind of depression. For me I’ve seen it happen and.. almost been there. But not quite. I’ve been amazingly depressed. To the point that I didn’t care what happened… Read more »

In the patients that I have seen with suicidal ideation /intentions one thing the old doctors shared with us is that the mere fact that they have come in telling you about it means that their is some hope of getting them back. A truly committed person can not be stopped because they won’t tell you about it. Over the years it become quite easy for me to deal with. I try not to use emotional appeals to people in distress. It’s important to stay calm and serious. That way when assessing their threat level you can be clear headed… Read more »

I don’t think the talking over each other is caused by lag so much. It’s as Laura and Jim said a couple of weeks ago; Gavin’s internet is wank, and Jim and Laura are gobby enough to block anybody out of the conversation.

Surprised you didn’t mention Chester’s close connection to Chris Cornell who also passed from suicide previously and who’s funeral he sang at. It appears the two were supporting of each other with their issues in that Chris’s passing greatly affected him. I don’t want to ramble on with the details, but I think the situation is rather heartbreaking and both were a positive influence through my earlier years of music. The thing with depression is it often feels like it never truly leaves, a bit like any addiction. Moments of happiness always feel momentarily fleeting before the inevitable sinking into… Read more »

I should clarify, due to not being able to edit my badly worded words; I wasn’t saying depression is an addiction at all, in case that bit is misinterpreted so, instead I meant that anybody who has experienced and overcome an addiction knows that it never truly gets erased completely, more that you learn to use the tools to effectively cope and counter what causes it in your mind. And that it can be all too easy to fall back into if you’re not careful. In that sense it bears some connections with depression, or I guess when you live… Read more »

Indeed. I was curious since on the X1 there is no free version at all, and we wanted to try it in my house since Epic’s marketing and buzz has been less than helpful. Lo and behold, we noticed PSN has a free splash screen and paywall. For free!
