Podquisition Episode 140: Bird-Faced People Eating Arses

This week, we describe social media in terms of a Hell painting, and give our thoughts on Splatoon 2 and Pyre.

Meanwhile, Gav’s played more Destiny, and Pokemon Go had an event that… well… didn’t quite go.

You say Splatoon’s online is “so Nintendo” yet all their other popular online games, Smash Bros., Mario Kart and Pokemon, let choose modes and stages.
It’s just a Splatoon thing.

I’d like to point out, that even if you do Believe in the Christian God and Hell, that nearly all depictions of that Hell are indeed thought up by people’s brains. Hell really isn’t described all that well in The Bible, and it most certainly doesn’t include Bird Faced People Eating Arses. And there’s no agreed upon depicting of Hell from other sources that is Endorsed by the Catholic Church or Protestant Leaders. All the stuff in those Paintings and Metal Album Covers comes from outside sources and Metal Album Covers.

Salmun Run’s insistence on thrusting three weapons on you caused me to fall in love with the Tri-slosher in a way I wouldn’t have bothered trying it without the mode, so… *shrugs*

Is it bad that I don’t really disagree with the trans “discrimination” in the military. I myself would be unable to join because I have an autistic spectrum disorder and it is largely the same reasoning: mental illnesses & disabilities AND those who are at high risk of suffering from such are not allowed to join for what should be obvious reasons. Trans people talk all the time about how high a risk they are of depression and/or suicide and while I think the USA needs to seriously tackle, it also makes it very understandable why the government would want… Read more »

Not really…Canada has allowed Trans people (as well as all GLB people) in the military since 1992.

Trans people in the Canadian military also have coverage for hormones and most surgery. As well as paid time off for recovery.

FYI: in Canada, military personal are not covered under the our Health Act. Their care is paid by the Crown directly as an expense not though taxes.

Chris

They are not at higher risk for depression and suicide because there is something inherently wrong with trans people. They are at risk for those things, as well as at higher risk for sexual assault, regular assault, murder and quite a lot of other terrible things, because of bigots like you and the culture you create around them.

Fuck off.

Maybe there’s a conversation regarding the competency of trans individuals or the cost involved of medically accommodating them. MAYBE. From what I’ve read I think they are predominantly fit to serve, but I am open to legitimate arguments.

What happened was not based on a legitimate argument. Donald Trump needed to reinforce his reputation with Evangelical whackjobs, because they were invested in Jeff Sessions, and he wants to fire Sessions without pissing them off. So he goes for an easy target to appease them. THAT is why it’s ok to demonize Trump over this.

Chris

Look up how much the military spends on healthcare for trans soldiers, including if they pay for gender reassignment or hormones.

Then look up how much the military spends on cialis and viagra for old guys who can’t get it up any more, it’s ten times higher at least.

Anyone arguing that there is an actual argument to be made in favor of this policy is doing so in bad faith.

He tweeted it and expected it to happen just because he said so, first of all. That’s just disrespectful. Secondly, he didn’t justify it in any way. It simply was, and we weren’t given details as to “why”. He has a history of discrimination against minority groups, both racial and otherwise, so we were left to decide for ourselves his intent based on that context. Third, Orange Julius is just a terrible human being. We laugh at his expense to forget we shouldn’t be laughing at all, because he has systematically destroyed everything sacred about government and public office far… Read more »

“And until we hear otherwise, that decision is just discrimination for the sake of it.” Why? Oh yeah, because you don’t like the guy. It’s okay to assume the worst in people as long as they “have a history” of making decisions you disagree with? That discrimination did actually have justification though. You might not AGREE with that justification, you might not think it adequate, but it does exist. This is what I talk about when I say we shouldn’t demonise Trump just because we don’t share his worldview. I’m of the firm belief that Trump is a man, one… Read more »

While my actual opinion is in moderation thanks to an f-bomb:
Don’t be an apologist. It only makes his position stronger and makes it easier to accept his behavior as normal.

Justin Wayne

Wow, so not treating someone as though they are the literal devil is being “an apologist” now? This is the kind of “You’re either with us or against us” rhetoric that George Dubya was famous for. It was a terrible way of trying to emotionally blackmail people to railroad them into political extremes them and it still is today. Just the people doing it now were the people actually making fun of Dubya back in the day…

If he’s ever done anything redeemable throughout his entire life, I’d be more than than happy to see it. Anything at all. Because it’s ridiculous that he can be as greedy, deceitful, ignorant, corrupt and inhumane as he is with nothing to justify it except being born into an incredibly privileged family making their riches off the backs of the poor and disadvantaged, while people still pretend it’s a-ok because ‘he’s just a person too, to.’ If you want to claim preople that find his position, choices and character despicable are just being hysterical by believing he is ‘the literal… Read more »

You are ignoring his background because your whole argument against me is “you should be ignoring the context of who said it in favor of this rationalization I have provided that wasn’t actually given by the person who said the thing in the first place.”

YOU, not Trump, rationalized the decision. He just said, over 3 tweets, “No more trans in the military”. That’s it. There was a lot of professional sounding words mixed in to try and make it sound official, but that was all he said. He didn’t even tell the actual fucking military this was the rules now, because he has no understanding of how his job is actually done. I voted for Hillary because she was the only qualified candidate. As a registered independent, I have that right to pick the lesser of two evils. Does not change the fact that… Read more »

I’ve really soured on Podquisition over the past year due to getting sick of the focus on the negative aspects of the industry, but I really wanted to thank the group this week for their frank discussion on suicide at the end. I had a particularly rough night and found myself wandering a golf course at night looking for a lake, when that part of the podcast came on it snapped me back to a less bleak reality. Thank you Laura in particular for your impassioned take, it brought me to tears. I’m not going anyway, I’m going to keep… Read more »

Suddenly, Jheronimus Bosch!

I was at the exposition with nearly all of his remaining work in Den Bosch. They brought them all to Bosch’s hometown from various museums and private collectors. So very weird, and so very much worth going. You really wouldn’t think it was painted at the end of the 15th century at first.

I would buy the hell out of a game set in that sort of universe.

I was always curious to check out the stuff Bennington did with Stone Temple Pilots after they fired Scott. I’m not sure if they actually recorded anything or if he just toured with them and whether or not it was just like Talk Show.

There was an EP called “High Rise” that Chester does t the vocals on. He played some live performances too. He quit pretty soon after though to focus on Linkin Park though.

Good chat at the end. Couldn’t agree more Chester fought his fight but his demons got the best of him. People who don’t have that shouldn’t comment he wasn’t week he unfortunately has enough.

Surprised Jim or gavin didn’t bring up angry joe. Both know him fairly well and his recent career decision to annoy his fanbase seems unwise.

Re trans inclusion in DDADDS, I’m not a big fan of how they did it. There’s something about letting wearing a binder be the only way to refer to a character’s transness that really rubs me the wrong way. Nothing in the game is adjusted to fit with that decision in the cc, which honestly just makes it so foreign from my own experience that (for me, personally) it ceases to matter as inclusion. I’m very appreciative of the dialogue choice about whether Amanda was adopted or not, however – that does feel like genuine trans inclusion. Honestly I guess… Read more »

In therapy I was told that depression can’t really be cured, just treated. I still have bad days when I just have no energy. Some days are OK though. I think it’s easy to romanticize or condemn people who feel suicidal or depressed. It doesn’t really feel either way to me. It sucks but it’s something people just live with and depending how well you can cope with your mind, you get by until you don’t anymore

Can absolutely relate to this. I’ve had it pretty easy recently as I’m an better place in life than before, but there are days where it’s a struggle to get out of bed or do the most basic things. Luckily for me, my depression never takes a self-destructive form, but it’s always been there in the background and might hang around forever.

I’ve fallen way behind in Jim’s content the last couple months. Decided to check out the site on lunch break, just to see what I’ve been missing the last few weeks.

I took my break in my car, and the instant, the absolute perfect instant, I loaded up thejimquisition.com on my phone, my radio started playing Erasure.

Not just any Erasure song either, Chains of Love.

So I guess that’s the universe sending me a sign?

They mention it in the show, but it’s a painting by Hieronymous Bosch, from the ‘Hell’ panel of Garden of Earthly Delights.

I haven’t played competitive multiplayer in nearly a decade, and even then, it was just pvp matches in vanilla WoW. But, I got a Switch this week, and in the bundle is Splatoon 2. I’m both nervous and excited. The good news is that voice chat on the Switch is shit, so I don’t have worry about people kicking me because I refuse to use chat (severe social anxiety). The bad news is, I know I’m going to suck, and be that one player that ruins my team’s chances every time. I don’t know, I just kinda love the colorful,… Read more »

I was in the same boat, having not played competetive multiplayer since the early 00s. I’ve been on Splatoon 2 about a week now, and I love it. Its great fun.. There’s no voice chat, which is great. Thoroughly recommend!

I should also make a few notes on Splatoon. Now, I haven’t played Splatoon 2 yet. However, Splatoon 1 had a similar feature with the mode switches. In competitive, the mode also swapped every 2 hours. There was the tower mode and the rainmaker mode. The map depended on the mode. So it did happen in Splatoon 1 as well and I personally liked it. It made the world feel like a live event. I can understand someone not enjoying it as it gets annoying that you can’t play a mode when you want to. But the way it was… Read more »

I actually thought Linkin Park’s lyrics were better early on in their career, from Minutes to Midnight onwards I found myself getting less and less excited for new LP albums(though Hunting Party felt like a step in the right direction) “One More Light” was kind of the last straw for me, none of the songs on that album really struck a chord with me, it felt like the band was trying to ape the Chainsmokers(who I think represent everything wrong with modern pop music) a little bit too much there. Some people have been kinder to the people after the… Read more »

It would be nice if reaching out about having suicidal thoughts wasn’t fraught with risk. I’m transfeminine, and an unfortunate many of us go through a period where suicide seems like the only way out. My mistake was talking with my only friend and ex-boyfriend about it, who was also trans; I honestly believed that he would understand. Instead, he ditched me within a week, just a few days after saying “things’ll work out, we can have a long and happy friendship together.” Please don’t let that anecdote discourage anyone from reaching out and talking with friends if you’re experiencing… Read more »

I think what Laura experienced in liking the sports game mechanics of Pyre is finding a context that makes her care about those mechanics. It’s why sports games are their own little niche that’s set apart from other games. the people who buy sports games have that context, they care about the sport in real life as well. If you don’t care about the sport in real life you don’t have the context that makes you care about seeing that game represented. But if you put the exact same mechanics in a context where you do care about them then… Read more »

I think a clear example of this is the people who hate strategy games or turn based RPGs, but love football management sims.

Suddenly, they enjoy grinding for experience to make their players better, and carefully monitoring a game and tweaking tactics as necessary. The gameplay loops are the same, really.

Yeah, the thing that came to mind for me was Total War. I can’t really play most of them. It’s not my thing at all. But put Shogun 2 in front of me and I’ll have fun with that, simply because Sengoku-era Japan is more interesting to me than any of the other settings. I’m sure some people loved Warhammer Total War when they wouldn’t even have looked at the historical ones, too. At least, that’s how I feel as an adult. But I’m somewhat into NHL (when I don’t care about any other sports), and I’m pretty sure playing… Read more »

As tiring as it is to deal with, I can sympathize with the overdone social media cynicism. It’s pretty depressing to see thing like pre-order-culture, microtransaction economies, and shitty regurgitated AAA sequel series flourish – not because the publishers are pushing these things, but because us consumers are supporting them. I can definitely understand the urge to occasionally yell at my fellow gamers for putting up with and encouraging this shit. I tend not to, because it’s their money and their (objectively wrong) decision, but boy howdy do I crave dragging out my lectern and giving a speech sometimes.

George

Honestly this is why I retired from consoles and AAA in general.

I just don’t anything that the AAA scene produces to be interesting anymore.
