Podquisition Episode 144: Harold The Giraffe

We’ll never find out why Harold the Giraffe is allowed in schools.

Elsewhere, we detail the sad fate of McBusted, The SNES Classic preorders are an unsurprising mess, and some videogame stuff happened!

You can listen/download directly here and get the RSS feed here.

Also, check out Laura Kate at Kotaku UK!

We totally had Happy Healthy Harold and his LIFE Education van in Australia too.

Wow, I never expected I’d ever hear people talk about Harold the Giraffe. At first he was just a hand puppet, but then they got a big animatronic giraffe head called “Big Harold” and he could actually talk (read: play voice clips over a speaker) as opposed to whispering into the Van Lady’s ear like regular ol’ Harold. They tried to phase Harold out when we moved up to middle school, but everyone always asked for him anyway and the Van Lady would half-heartedly bring him back out, completely aware that nobody ever gave a shit about what we were… Read more »

I remember Harold. Didn’t think folks in the U.K. got the giraffe since we aussies made the thing. Though your puppet looks a hell of a lot more frightening than ours…

Speaking of snipper clipx, Laura needs to have a look at the porn for that game – the weird overlapping/penetration mechanics of the game give a weird edge to the porn that is needed for what is ultimate just a load of arbitrary polygons – some with bows and thus female? – with multicolored genitalia.

I am glad Laura seems to be doing alright. As a trans woman who has also dealt with depression and neurological difficulties, she has always been something of an inspiration to me and I was very distressed to hear about what happened to her last week. I was worried that she would not be here on this weeks Podquisition and am relived to be proven wrong.

Thank god for Laura, Gav and obviously THANK GOD for Jim, for being a lovely person and friend to the trans community in general and LKD specifically.

Ah yes McFly, i’m actually familiar with them as they appeared in the Lindsay Lohan film “Just My Luck”

I think GTA, Watch Dogs and Saints Row do humor very well.

I feel like Agents of Mayhem was better then the past 2 Saints Row games.

It’s amazing how “that’s educational” is so accepted as an excuse, my school teachers used that excuse to show my junior high class Mel Gibson’s The Patriot, first R-rated movie I ever saw.

Was Overgrowth the game you thinking of during the Biomutant discussion?

So Mcfly and Busted combined like Station in Bill and Ted 2? Except, you know… Station could play music.

I’m really happy to hear about Horizon adding in an easy difficulty. I adore that game but ran into some walls with some of the higher level robot dinosaurs, so I can totally get someone wanting to experience that way.

Of course, I’m sure someone out there thinks the fact that someone can play it their way and enjoy it without ever impacting them is somehow ruining the game for them. And they can quite frankly fuck off.

I love to play hard games and I have no problems with adding easier ways to play. I just wish they wouldn’t be so lazy with the hard modes. Bullet sponges don’t make it hard, they make it boring.

Yeah, some devs really need to learn the difference between hard and frustrating. Just bumping up enemy hp or damage resistance isn’t a fun challenge, it just tends to make your game annoying.

I think the point of the store box isn’t “collectable,” but it’s so the stores have something to put on their shelves. Sometimes when looking for games I search online, and sometimes I browse the electronics section to see if something catches my eye.

Also, the box provides a way to get the game as a gift for someone else. Nobody’s getting me a game through my eshop, because they don’t have my code.

It’s niche, sure, but I think the retail eyespace is a major factor in the physical box version.

I’d play Dream Daddy with Angela Merkel for the following reasons.

1. It’s a dating sim game so there’s (almost) no way she won’t have the ability to play it.

2. The writing is pretty good and the relationship between the player character dad and your daughter Amanda is genuinely sweet.

3. Angela Merkel voted against gay marriage in Germany (it still passed though) so maybe the game can plant seeds of doubt about her beliefs, or at least make her pissy as she plays. ;p

Laura is so posh she doesn’t actually eat fast food. That’s for us lowly peasant folk.

Hey, i’m much more fit, than somewhat pudgy Laura, and i have fast-food sometimes, how dare you call me a peasant, sir!

If I remember correctly the Cool Spot and Fido Dido game were actually the same game. Cool Spot was the American mascot and Fido Dido the UK/European one. Basically, the same game released but Americans got Fido & Europeans got Cool Spot.

Obligatory mention that turning off the POI markers in Witcher 3 improves the experience a good bit.

Certainly didn’t have Harold in my school – wonder if it’s a regional or an age thing.

Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis is the “proper” park builder you were thinking of Jim! It came out on PS2, Xbox, and PC back in 2003 and still has a following to this day.

There has also been a few handheld games and the mobile games which are more like pokemon battlers than park builder.

He taught us about avoiding discarded needles in Primary School, and then about Safe Sex in High School.

Okay, why the fuck is a giraffe taking it upon itself to be the one to teach kids how to fuck safely? That feels wrong… like Harald’s raging erection.

Healthy Harold is an ableist symbol.
