Podquisition Episode 149: Iwata In The Machine

Iwata is the Ghost in the Machine now, which cements his coolness.

Elsewhere, the PS Vita has a bad time, the Atari Box is a thing, and that Assassin’s Creed gold head is horrible.

Slightly ironic that after Jim’s discussion about picking your words carefully he then proceeds to brand video game executives he disapproves as appearing to be “cock jockeys”. This isn’t intended as a dig, as I consider Jim to be a mature and progressive voice in the world of video games, but perhaps his discussion of his less enlightened days (and we’ve surely all had those) caused a subconscious short-circuit leading him to misspeak. It took me a while in my late teens to stop using the word “gay” as a synonym for lame. I always maintained that I wasn’t using… Read more »

I would love to read the PSVita article by Laura Kate but I can’t find it on Kotaku. Am I looking in the right place and it hasn’t been uploaded yet, or should I look elsewhere? A Google search turned up a lot of her articles, but not the one I’m looking for. Also, I’m pretty sure Sony said there was no market for mobile gaming because cell phones are ubiquitous with a EDC device. I believe they even mentioned that Nintendo had found a niche market with a home console that had the ability to do mobile. Its difficult… Read more »

The problem with that conclusion is that it’s the same with PC’s. Yes, there are WAY more PC’s out there than there are home consoles from all three manufacturers, and while the income from software sales is WAY higher than that of consoles, it’s also split up greatly between software devs. And many of those PC’s aren’t even used for gaming at all. The only ones consistently making money are the ones who own the digital storefronts. But you know what are definitely used for gaming? Gaming PC’s. And in the same way, handhelds and home consoles find their audience… Read more »

Why did you post it this way? How can I download it now? I use to listen to it in the car, as a podcast I download in advance because of bad reception. WTF, JIM.

Just get a podcast app and subscribe to the feed.

Not sure what your issue is, I just downloaded it as normal. Either go to SoundCloud site, select the “more” tab and DL directly, or just click on the download button on the top right on the embedded player above. I always DL Jim’s podcasts because imo the levels are far too low. Usually I add 50% volume to Podquistions and 100+% on his Spindoctors.

Great little episode this one – for me, best one in a month. I come for the personalities, I stay for the bollocks.

Wait, so there’s no 15-minutes of “Isn’t it funny how we’re wasting the listener’s time?! We should talk about videogames but let’s go on about deer penises or something!?” at the start this week, and it’s the week that we’re missing *Gavin*, the guy who usually either sticks to the point or stays out of the discussion if it’s something he’s not into? I was worried this week would be all over the place but instead it’s a really good episode.

If I’m paying 60 000 people currencies for a pair of headphones, they had damn well better allow me to hear the private, intimate thoughts of others, news articles from the future AND alien civilization communications. Otherwise, donate them to the homeless. They would really appreciate a corporate-branded gold-plated pair of twat-muffins.

Giving a homeless man a $60,000 pair of AC headphones is the cruelest thing I can think of.

Poor guy wouldn’t even be able to trade them for a ten-dollar meal.

Melt ’em down…We can make yo-yos and pogs for the orphans!

I know they’re supposed to be made of gold, but I’m 97% sure that if you melted them they would resolidify as a turd. In the exact shape of the new Ubi logo.

Then the orphans will be blessed with golden Ubi-poos! They’ll be the next fashion statement, you’ll see…

Sadly just the sounds of Ubisoft executives laughing while they roll naked in your money.

As someone who backed and played Plague Road, my brief thoughts on it is that it feels a bit unfinished and while the base for the combat is good, it gets really repetitive very fast. Overall, I thought it was a slightly below average game. That said, I love the utilization of the Vita’s features. The ability of being able to use the touch screen to push options and being able to use the touch screen, if you want, to during combat to move and navigate the options is very well executed. Sometimes when you want to move your character… Read more »

I played Borderlands 2 on Vita and I thought it was a pretty decent experience, certainly not as good as console/PC but not unplayable either, biggest problem wasn’t the framerate, it was that the game would sometimes randomly turn itself off for no apparent reason. So no I don’t think the Vita died cause of Borderlands 2, it was because Sony just didn’t make enough original first-party titles for it, Killzone Liberation, Uncharted Golden Abyss and Resistance Burning Skies were all pretty solid games and it’s a shame there weren’t more like those. I don’t see the Atari Box doing… Read more »

Honestly, I feel like the Vita got shafted out of the gate due to COD: Black Ops Declassified, which was such a cash-grab that it soured a lot of people on the “Vita experience” immediately. The forced tech demos didn’t help either, constantly disrupting other major games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Awesome games like Gravity Rush didn’t get enough of a push at the time.

Calling it now:

“Black Ops Declassified was a damn good game!” – machine

LOL no, I didn’t like that game much actually, sorry to completely ruin your little prediction there. BOD wasn’t the worst game I ever played, but I can definitely see a strong case for that being the game that soured people on the Vita, the campaign was way too short, the maps were way too small, and it just felt like a rushed lazy cash grab overall, which is a shame because a lot of people myself included were quite excited at the thought of a portable COD game, too bad they bungled it up so bad.

Agents of Mayhem could also have tried having fun, non-repetitive gameplay and not being buggy and unstable. That would have helped it do better than more Saints Row branding would have.

Wasn’t any of those things for me. I personally found it less repetitive then I did Saints Row 4.

Well clearly the audience as a whole didn’t agree with you, hence it not selling nearly as well. And it wasn’t because people didn’t know it was a Saints Row game, literally everyone knew that the moment the first reveal trailer came out. If anything, people were angry that it was trying to be a Saints Row spiritual successor and doing such a bad job of it, I know that was why I refunded it within a couple of hours of starting to play the truly shameful PC port they put up on Steam in a barely playable state.

For some reason I can never get to grips with any game on Vita that is a port of a console version. Even the Telltale games. The controls just don’t translate for me. I always find them sluggish and overall a vastly poorer experience.
On the flip side, anything made specifically for the Vita I have a much better time with.
I even prefer playing PSP ports on my Vita to console conversions.
But that’s just me. I’m not saying that console to Vita ports are crap. I just can’t get on with them.
