Podquisition Episode 156: Darth Vendor

It’s difficult to talk about anything other than the sheer mess that has been Star Wars Battlefront II.

We discuss 2017’s most controversial game while refreshing its subreddit waiting for EA DICE’s ill-fated AMA to start.

Also, Hand of Fate 2, DOOM for Switch, and some other stuff!

Shareholders and CEOs aren’t invisible phantoms. It’s just that not many try that hard to unmask them. If you want a brief summary of who owns EA (or any company for that matter) all you have to do is go to the nasdaq website.

For LA Noire, I never had an issue with the Truth, Doubt, Lie system. I don’t know if I read the manual, or paid attention in the tutorial or what… I mean I don’t remember exactly where I learned this but…. It works like this, Pick Truth if you think the person is telling the truth. Pick Doubt if you think they are lying but can’t prove it. Pick Lie if you have evidence that contradicts something they said. And since you can back out of a Lie, pick that first and see what evidence you can present, if none… Read more »

Listening to the three of them prowling and salivating as they wait for the Battlefront AMA to begin, I imagined them as some Mad Max style gang of raiders chasing EA down: Jim at the back in his Immortan Joe getup, Gav as the guy at the front with the flamethrower guitar and Laura on the roof spraying silver Hammerite onto her teeth bellowing “WITNESS ME!”

…look, I get very bored on the bus, daydreaming’s how I keep myself occupied.

I wanted Switch Doom to have gyroscopic controls for assisted aiming. It helped so much for aiming in Zelda that I would take a graphical downgrade in Doom for that feature.

As someone who loves the Star wars franchise, this practice I can say has made sure I do not touch with the biggest barge pole. What frustrates me the people who make the game are getting the shaft from this. They are getting the blowback and they don’t deserve it. Now they deserve some blowback for the bugs in the game. What bothers me is that star wars is beloved with force awakens which I think rescued the franchise from the oblivion it was in the games should be good keep that quality rolling. Personally ea need to understand if… Read more »

They don’t even deserve blowback for the bugs really, I’m gonna guess EA decided that meeting a deadline trumped doing sufficient QA work, so just wrapped up whatever state the Devs had gotten the game to by deadline and damned the consequences. Devs aren’t really at fault in that case. Of course, it does make you wonder, how much of “not wanting to delay the game for more Quality Assurance and bugfixing” was inspired by the murdering of Visceral using the excuse that “their game was a mess” – can a publisher shitcan a development subsidiary for that then delay… Read more »

Star Wars has never once been in a position which could be considered Oblivion. Star Wars for a very long time has been a multimedia juggernaut, which continues to sell product which is entirely the reason Disney bought it.

WHAT THE FUCK AM I LISTENING TO??

JAM MERLIN, STAHP.

(was literally listening to it in the background while doing something else, lost track of what was being said, focused back in in time to grasp that Jim was talking about being whipped by a… simulation of a car wash?, however he’s now talking about how it’s bad that people got death threats and I want to make clear I’m not objecting to that)

I remember a lot of people having trouble with “doubt” when LA Noire first came out and the reason for that is I think everyone misunderstood its use. People seemed to think that it was an all purpose safety button for if you thought someone was lying but didn’t want to commit to the choice of accusing them of lying. That’s not what it was at all. And funny enough “Lie” was more of a safety button because it allowed you to back out if you didn’t have evidence. No, what doubt is if you know somebody is lying but… Read more »

My biggest problem with ‘doubt’ was that there really was no way to tell what tone Phelps was going to use. You’d be talking to this old lady who runs a boarding house and she would seem mildly evasive on whether she knew much about the victim’s private life, like she was embarrassed to say so, and ‘doubt’ would suddenly cause Phelps to start insulting and threatening her out of nowhere. Then you’d be talking to someone else later and ‘doubt’ would cause Phelps to calmly and politely offer to help the person if they will be more forthcoming. It… Read more »

It is a pity that they dropped the Burglary desk as it would have partnered Cole with Brandon Keener (Garrus).

I made at least one conviction in LA Noire entirely based on the quality of the third series of Heroes.

That was also largely my problem with it.

Also my expectations were set by Phoenix Wright which, as silly as it is, is a far better representation of a conversation because you actually can press people to extrapolate on something and it doesn’t count as the only response you’re allowed to have to that conversation.

My advice if you’re thinking about picking up LA Noire: Play Phoenix Wright and read LA Confidential (Phelps is such a low grade Ed Exley knock off).

Kelso was a much better character. He had the much more interesting job of insurance investigator and his attitude and personality were consistent. I’d be willing to put Phelps on a list of worst written characters in game history. I seriously didn’t know he was married with children until halfway in the game when [SPOILEEEEEEEERS HOLY FUCK] his wife divorces him. That is some seriously sloppy writing.

Chris

Yeah LA Noire was structured super weird. You saw his wife briefly at the beginning of the patrol tutorial and then not again until that big reveal. I think Phelps mentions him to one of the partners in passing once early on, I think at the start of the homicide desk maybe, and that’s the last even he talks about her. If the game was going for an unreliable narrator sort of thing where that was supposed to represent how little Phelps thinks about her I don’t feel like they got what they were going for, it just felt sloppy.… Read more »

I think his wife gets mentioned with one of his conversations with Ray on the first desk. There was I believe quite a lot cut from the game, including at least one full desk which would have been burglary. One of the DLC cases, for example, was a case in the middle of one of the desks and features conversations which are semi-important.

It can’t be stated enough. Do not buy Battlefront 2. Even ‘just for the campaign.’ Anyone giving EA for this shit is a part of the problem.

Just pick up the Dark Forces games cheap.

Or get the original Battlefront 2 on GOG and play with some bots. The Galactic Conquest mode in that is still fun.

Fuck it just buy Edge of Empire or Age of Rebellion and make your own campaign.

I’ll co-sign on the original Battlefront 2 still being fun. Every now and then I’ll start it up and devote a night to some Galactic Conquest. Some of the most fun I’ve had at a LAN is playing the space levels with friends.

Thing is I love star wars and I want to support the franchise. It just got back on its feet.

Yeah, Disney sure is hurting for money after those two movies that grossed obscene amounts of money both domestically and oversees and their increasingly monopolistic control of the movie industry and their strong arming theaters into giving them increasing shares of ticket sales and control over more screens for a longer period of time to choke out competitors. Disney doesn’t need to be ‘supported’, their single biggest franchise doesn’t need to be ‘supported’, EA doesn’t need to be ‘supported’. Don’t buy this game. Or if you do, you don’t ever get to complain about the increasing bullshit from ‘AAA’ publishers… Read more »

The franchise has never been off its feet. So if you love Star Wars why are you willing to support something like this? It does not require your financial support.

Yes, the franchise owned and backed by Disney needs all of our help or the poor thing will starve.

Does the EA AMA top the one Randy Pitchford did? As that worked out so well.

My favorite exchange (which you wouldn’t have seen in recording since the AMA was not started yet) happened during this little exchange (paraphrased):

User: GI gave you a 6.5 because of the lootboxes, how does that make you feel?
DICE: It’s a real shame. Our artists worked real hard, and our game is super good. We have no idea why the lootboxes are such a big deal, and I bet our score would be higher if they had focused more on that.

My only thought was “realistic gun sounds”. They were made by a professional studio, after all!

Then perhaps Mr Developer you shouldn’t have included controversial features that would elicit a negative response

I don’t know why people expect anything from official AMAs. The sacrificial devs sent into the lion’s den are not going to say anything but the pre-written publisher statements. I guess if it makes you feel better to yell at them over reddit, more power to you, but honestly it feels like a waste of time for everyone.

The Pitchford one had some amusement value but the people doing the Battlefront AMA are will not be at Pitchford’s level in Dice and also were not actively lying about the game before hand.

Randy Pitchford is a special kind of dumb, these guys are BS-slinging pros.

I was there to see just how complicit the audience was. I was mildly surprised to see a roughly 80/20 split on hate vs “nothing is wrong here”.

I wasn’t about to make a Reddit account to just be ignored.
