I too hate those lengthy, frontloaded tutorials, especially ones where you *can’t* do a given thing until the game tells you how to do it. I played a pretty egregious one recently though in .Hack/G.U Last Recode, where it makes you do a tutorial, then there’s a timeskip in the story, then it MAKES YOU DO THE TUTORIAL AGAIN. Most of which was stuff it literally just told you, and even your character is rolling his eyes and saying “I already know this stuff”.

I’ll say this about Valve. They might be sitting on their IP but they are at least lenient with people making fan games. Maybe Valve doesn’t give a fuck, but at least they’re not hoarding the license. It still disappoints me but maybe we’ll get a fan-made HL3 on the level of Black Mesa.

Hearing HL3 lamentation makes me glad I was never that big a fan of the series. Don’t get me wrong, HL1 was brilliant, but it worked as a self-contained experience. When HL2 came out, I thought I was the one person who didn’t think it was the greatest thing ever. Sure, the atmosphere was great, but the plot as a whole did absolutely nothing for me. It’s too comfortable stringing people along, giving little in the way of actual plot development, and doing its best impression of “LOST” by constantly creating questions about its universe that it never answers. Here’s… Read more »

I think HL2 was so beloved because it pushed the envelope for FPSs at the time. Innovations in in-game cinematic set pieces, which are how almost all FPSs do it now, was transformational. The gravity gun, which allowed you to pick up and manipulate objects (to solve puzzles), was also both clever and fresh in a genre that is all too reliant on guns imo. The hope for HL3 I guess might be to bring some much needed innovation to stale shooters. All that said, I don’t really care about HL3 at this stage anymore either. I doubt I even… Read more »

Poor Gavin had so little to say this episode. Episodes like this must seem like a bit of a waste of time for him(?). That said, I can see that this time of year it’s hard to fill an hour when so little is happening on the gaming front. Would have liked to hear about some teasers to favourite games/movies/TV/music of the year or something (given how close we are to the countless forthcoming lists), for example. Also maybe highlight some gems that people might have missed and might be worth checking out. On that note, I’m playing through Divinity:… Read more »

Hey, you know what I was doing while listening to the podcast?

Playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Salvaging, killing high xp enemies, and sending my blades out as mercenaries while making multiple attempts at a frustrating named foe I’m trying to figure how to manage the gimmick for.

My school had a dedicated religious assembly every Friday. Still holds one of the weirdest, cringiest assemblies ever I reckon. Guy up on stage trying to find religious meaning in the lyrics of Human by the Killers because he was hip to us kids. There’s nothing like being in a room with 650 other 11-18 year-olds collectively thinking ‘what the fuck are you doing?’.

A person I used to work with suddenly became a Christian with him becoming more and more of a fundamentalist as time went on. With him becoming quite firmly convinced that vast tracts of science was now wrong and that world is only several thousands of years old. He also very frequently got things entirely wrong and quite often misinterpreting sections of the Bible. We worked on an IT helpdesk and if the call reference number happened to feature three certain recurring digits he wasn’t comfortable with reading it out.

Why work when you can make money for essentially free? That describes a lot of things lately I’ve noticed.

It basically describes late capitalism really. Why bother to make things and employ people and be creative? The real money is in programming a system or a platform, employing as few people as possible and doing as little work as possible and counting on your users to generate content for you to sell. Valve is every bit as lazy and apathetic as any of the big internet tech companies, right down to having as big a problem as Twitter or Facebook with infestations of racists and Nazis and Russian scammers and trolls.

The Peach & Mario Amiibo for Odyssey are a little bit broken.

Hi Michael.

Called it ;-). Was just a matter of time before the syntax unique to Michael would become more obvious. Credit to him that he managed to hide it well enough for a week or so though.

Well that didn’t take long. Welcome back and go away diamond.

Is it definitely one of his? Can we be certain it’s diamond until he cites Yahtzee as though he’s David Hume or something?

Oh absolutely, no mistaking that syntax. People have been suspicious of that account for a couple days, but there’s no denying it now.

Ah, didn’t realise it had turned up before. First time I’ve seen it. As for the syntax, there are so many people that have a similar writing style/vocabulary that I’m wary of calling someone out based on that alone.

Should we maybe just ignore him and wait for Justin to wipe his posts? I feel like, every time he pops up half the discussion content ends up being the Michael Prymula witch hunt.

One person highlighting that it’s another diamond sock puppet to make it easier to spot is probably all that’s needed.

The problem is, everyone does it. It’s like a pack of golden retrievers chasing a squirrel.

An annoying, shitposting squirrel.
