Podquisition Episode 8: The Numbers

This week, the gang talks about review scores and why they’re okay sometimes. Maybe. A bit. Most people hate The Numbers, and they hate Metacritic too, but The Jimquisition uses them because of Some Reasons.

There’s also some videogame talk, including discussion of a game that has zombies and big breasts in it. So… that’s good.

I wish Gavin had not gestured as if the people he was imitating were disabled. I am similarly a bit unhappy with his behaviour in general – I am sure he means well, but he really gets under my skin.

So uh… Resident Evil HD apparently wasn’t completely broken…
Please don’t end up being Grim Fandango. That would suck for Jim. And for me, too, because I’m in the same boat.

Ok this is perhaps not relevant to this podcast but holy cow on God’s Earth… have you bought the H1Z1 Early Access … the game is shockingly bad even for Steam Early Access, too many things to mention but what are they smoking over at Sony …. seriously.

Question for next weeks podcast!
Noticed in my local EB games (gamestop) an Assassins Creed Monopoly set on the shelf. If Ubisoft had a hand in developing the game, in what unique ways do you think they would Ubisoft it?

Hi Jim, Episode 8 was my first Jimquisition. I enjoyed it quite a bit! I’m subbed now, and planning to go back and listen to the others. Would you consider being a guest on my show sometime? I’d love to have you on and just talk about your ascension in the gaming media and then maybe whatever else you’d like to cover. We usually talk about whatever we are playing at the time. We’ve been known to go way off topic when we feel we have amusing stories though. The show has been going since 2008 and enjoys a modest… Read more »

I admit I had not thought of Metacritic like that. It’s easy to get swept up in righteous fury when you hear about shit like what Bethesda pulled, but it’s true that Metacritic is really just a tool. If nothing else, it’s a site where you can easily peruse the professional reviews of games- and generally ignore the user reviews because 90+% of the time they are laughably biased. Also, while I’m not a fan of review scores, I find them much more tolerable when the numbers are clearly defined and properly applied. None of this “Too much water: 7.5”… Read more »

I prefer Man-Shepard and Lady-Shepard because they both sound like grooming products for pubic hair.

Shit, I hope when Laura talks about “re-release of old games and you might want to wait for reviews” isn’t the game I’m thinking it is. It is, I know it is, but I still hope it isn’t.

I hope it’s Resident Evil, as I’ve already had one good remaster experience with that on the Gamecube.

Please please please don’t be Grim Fandango.

I didn’t know that the publicity arm of many video game companies were laden with so many peculiarities when it comes to imposing rules, conditions, embargoes on reviewers; it seems such to be such an uneasy relationship. My view is that honesty on the part of the companies is the best policy from the outset and if they don’t want to release information then just be silent don’t make a false public statement then retract it shortly after. It would be better for a company that doesn’t want to make a comment to give a cheeky, tantalizing snippet of info.… Read more »

For some idea during the whole discussion of Twinkies I had Twix in my head. So when Laura said they were cakey and full of white stuff I was hopelessly confused. I almost got to the point of typing out an “It’s cookie not cake! And since when is caramel white?! Jesus Christ aghhdsfhdh” comment before I realized I was mentally defective.

That should be “some reason” not “some idea”. Not quite out of the mentally defective woods yet it seems.

I have one of those old McDonald’s Disney trivia glasses that claims the only words Pluto ever spoke were ”kiss me” in the episode The Moose Hunt.

I haven’t noticed that Rotten Tomatoes has killed movies yet, for all that it seems to serve basically the same roll as Metacritic. Or, for that matter, noticed that film reviewers giving a numerical star rating seems to bother people. I don’t know what it is about gaming in particular that causes people to get upset over this, but I’ve always liked numerical ratings, and I’m glad Jim’s doing them.

(An on a related note, I see from Twitter that some reviews are incoming. Happy days!)

Please can Laura post a link of the artwork for Female Ejaculate Woman. I’m Intrigued (but not being wierd).

Yeah, I’d venture a guess that googling for “female ejaculate woman” doesn’t turn up with the artwork.

I know you are a man of your word Jim, since else you would not repeat your stances you gave in Jimquisitions on the podcast. I should know, I re-watched all of the episodes many times and made a playlist of all the YouTube released ones, even the Destructoid ones.

And the trolls and the people who take away glee from giving you shit: get a life you tapeworms of the cyberspace.

IT’S GOOFY TIME!!
But, serious talk. I also hate it when secrecy is used as a marketing ploy, especially when it’s manufactured secrecy. That being said, we as listeners aren’t under any obligations to not discuss the things you guys are obligated to not discuss. Can anyone make any guesses as to what Laura was obliquely referring to?

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably “Resident Evil HD”. That’s coming out on the 20th I think.
