So Are “AAA” Loot Boxes Done? (The Jimquisition)

In 2017, the “AAA” game industry went all-in on loot boxes – microtransactions that emulate gambling to maximize ill-gotten gains.

In 2018, new games aren’t using them and old games are scrubbing them. Are they done in the mainstream business, or are companies just biding their time?

I kinda wish micotransactions were killed off instead. Loot Boxes are just a branch in the microtransaction tree, kill the tree there’s nothing for the branch to be a branch to.

While I absolutely want to believe you’re right, honestly I just feel they’re biding their time and moving away from the dumpster fire before they relight that trash heap elsewhere. It is the single most lucrative endeavor they ever had, and they will stop at nothing to get it. Activision is still doing it with CoD, Overwatch, and I think Destiny, and Ubisoft has recently retroactively added them to their older and newer games DURING the controversy and I do not think it’ll stop. It’s actually the only reason I don’t want to get Far Cry 5, as everything else… Read more »

To be fair, if more lootboxes gave out prizes like the one in this video, I’d certainly commend the honesty. They could even add a little silhouette of a man running away with a bag of all your cash, laughing maniacally.

I don’t want to pay for costumes or cosmetics in games. I was always more annoyed by the dead space costume dlc, than by overwatch’s loot boxes because at least I can get everything for free in overwatch.

That’s… uncharacteristically optimistic, actually. I don’t recall many instances where games industry backed out of exploitative monetization practices for good. AAA lootboxes may be gone for now, but that is not dead, which can eternal lie – and the culprits behind that particular controversy have been lying for a long, long time now. I expect this mechanic to rear up its ugly head again, in time – in different trappings, perhaps, dolled up to appear like more than it is, rebranded and with an array of excuses prepared beforehand, lootboxes will be back one way or another and it will… Read more »

I love that you’re getting to live out your wrestling dreams and absolutely, unashamedly throwing yourself into Sterdust. Wrestling itself isn’t my thing but it’s hard not to appreciate your enthusiasm for it.

Yeah, unfortunately, so long as Activision is allowed to get away with it unscathed, lootboxes will always have a foothold in the industry that’ll incourage the other publishers to try again someday. I swear, ardent Blizzard fans would gleefully raise their chins, if the company offered to slit their throats. I suggested to one of them, wouldn’t it be great if you could just buy the skins you want outright? I didn’t suggest they be unlockable through gameplay, I didn’t suggest they be free, I just suggested they not be randomized. The person got angry, and insisted it had to… Read more »

More pertinent to older Jimquisitions, but I’ve found it interesting, Jim that after your comments on how news media et al are getting away with gratuitous real-world violence all the time for shock value, that the adverts in the background of the sites I frequent have picked up one. This particular “advert” preports to be about Dragon’s Den (the TV show I presume) and shows some woman that appears to have been struck in the face (and goes on about “the real reason that [x] left” or some such). I have no idea what it is all about – I… Read more »

For me, they aren’t, in fact I think they’ll get worse later down the line. Sure their going away for now and he’s right that that old fashioned “cosmetic” microtransactions are coming back to take over. But in my experience with the game industry, years of fan reactions to controversy’s, I’ve came to one conclusion, people in the game industry have very short short-term memories. So many times have I seen press deride a person for an awful thing they did like a Dev, Let’s Player etc only to then a year or 2 later giving them publicity and defending… Read more »

Just like the Online pass, Lootboxes are dead. Or soon to be. Remember online passes? Remember how single player games with no online aspect at all expected people to fork out another fiver if they dared to buy it pre-owned to get the locked content? I do. It was greedy. Lootboxes are even worse because the industry couldn’t help but be utter fucking gre [♪SKELETON WARRIORS♫]! I know, I got’ve to stop using that joke as Its being pounded into the ground by me. But they are greedy fuckers and lootboxes are an idea that should become obselete. It shall… Read more »

Loot boxes may be (somewhat) done , but they will always find some way to overcharge and exploit. The specific method is irrelevant when the base priority remains monetization, and not product quality.

What I learned from this video: Sterdust is more competent than Jimsaw as both a stalker and a horror movie villain.
