Can we get the written review allong with the video? I mean just copy and paste the script should do?

Chris Wallace

I could be wrong, but the way he described his process on one of the Podcasts (can’t remember if it was Spin off doctors or Podquisiton), there’s no script to copy paste. He just talks and edits and talks and edits until he’s happy with it.

batmabel

It was on Podquisition, and yes there is no script. There should tho, even if it was a transcript after the video was done… It’s a lot of work, yes, but I feel it’s worth it.

Please add the written transcripts of your reviews Jim, I love the video content but sometimes the written stuff is more accessible for various technical reasons

Sounds about as good if not better than Sonic Generations. I’ll pick it up on PC when it comes out provided the port is up to standards.

The only possible issue you might see on PC is that Sonic games have a tendency to not play nice with high refresh-rate monitors. All Sonic games are supposed to be capped at 60 frames per second, but running some of the games on a 120 Hz monitor will cause them to run twice as fast as they’re supposed to. I’ve noticed this issue in Sonic CD, Sonic 4 Episode 2 and both of the Adventure games. The best way to fix this issue is either to use Rivatuner or Nvidia Inspector to manually cap the frame-rate at 60, or… Read more »

And hey, no being a werewolf. Or having a human girlfriend. Or just being Sonic Boom. All of which were obviously fucking awful but plenty of Sonic fans will still defend anyway!

Well done Sega, for finally making a Sonic game that intelligent people can enjoy.

Whether they were awful or not is just your opinion, and people are not stupid just because they like games you do not like.

Correction: “Whether they were awful or not is just an opinion (shared by an overwhelming majority), and people are not stupid just because they like games you do not like (They just have questionable taste or buyer’s bias due to consumer conditioning).”

Anyone arguing that Sonic ’06 isn’t objectively broken and buggy to the point of being nearly unplayable for example is blinded by brand loyalty.

That said it’s a blast to watch speed runs of, because those same bugs and glitches make it so easy to break. You’ll watch a runner just stand up against a corner vibrating slightly it jumping and gliding as rouge the bat in one spot for several minutes, they’ll just student disappear or fall through the world or shoot up above the skybox and then the end level screen will be there.

Owner of the switch version here. The actual game isn’t buggy at all (except when the filter is set to soft there seems to be some kind of syncing issue) but the screenshot button doesn’t work at all and the home button seems to be very laggy for some reason.

Like many of the issues with the Switch in general, this seems to be on a person by person basis.
I’ve heard people have way more issues than I have, whereas my screenshot button works fine, and the home button, while not instantaneous, is also not bad. Maybe a quarter of a second of lag for me, where other people have multiple seconds of lag on it.
If your Switch regularly has problems like this, it may also have issues with Mania. But if not, you’re probably fine.

Never liked Sonic mechanically and as a character. Still, this game solves one of the issues I’ve always had with the games: it’s widescreen, so you have some time to react to whatever comes when you’re running fast. I mean, the original was a game that was sold on the premise you gotta run fast, yet, you literally could not react as there was physically no time, so you had to memorise the map. That’s poor game design. They also should shift the character to the left end of the screen when dashing right so you have even more room… Read more »

Sonic always had that weird disconnect in how, at heart, platformers are puzzle games where there’s fairly specific routes through levels that have to be worked out by the player through careful and methodical exploration, while Sonic’s entire aesthetic is one of rushing and the mechanics back that up, a combination which can be frustrating. The flipside is what Jim mentions in the review – that same flaw makes replays of levels interesting, not in the usual platformer way of “find the secrets/collectaphon” but because once you’ve worked out what you’re supposed to do, all those slightly cumbersome mechanics suddenly… Read more »

I love how the different Jimquisition characters give the score! That’s a very nice touch.

I mention this because no one has yet. This is a fan game. This is Christian Whitehead’s baby. He is the guy that got ported Sonic to android then poked Sega till they let him release it android. This is his baby so saying Sega can screw it up is a big understatement Christian is the ultimate old school Sonic fan and it is his persistence that gave this masterpiece life, NOT SEGA.

Chris

That Sonic port on Android is actually really solid, and I say that as someone who has never cared for playing much more complex than board/puzzle games on a touch screen. So credit where’s it’s due, dude did a good job. I guess my credit to Sega is in allowing him to do it and clearly not interfering or trying to ‘fix’ it the way they have kept doing for the last few games. I hope he makes more, and I hope Sega learns their lesson and they don’t immediately try to reboot it or ‘innovate’ again and end up… Read more »

Unleashed was perfectly fine, biggest issue was it felt like two games in one.

Chris
Member

The issue wasn’t that it was two games in one. The issue is that one of those games was slow and clunky and not at all fun to play, and felt nothing at all like a Sonic game since it was a half assed god of war rip off combined with terrible platforming.

And that of the two that one had more levels and made up more of the play time than the actual Sonic game people wanted to play

Holy fucking shit, thank God for you Jim, and thank God Sega managed not to fuck this one up. I have been looking forward to it since it was announced, having made what everyone tells me was bad choice as a kid to get a Genesis for Christmas near the end of that console cycle instead of an SNES, but I’ve been trying not to follow it too closely for fear of the disappointment I was sure Sega was setting me up for. Now I can just decide whether to get the PS4 version or wait a couple weeks for… Read more »

9.5! 9.5? You know what that’s going to do the MetaCritic score? You know it can never be a perfect 10 now? All credibility is lost (again) /s

All kidding aside, I’m very glad this game is being so well received. I loved Sonic on the Genesis and I work with two people (in my bay) that are big Sonic fans so I can look forward to a period of elation over anger. Thank God for Jim!

GAYDAD420

afaik that’s actually not true. a few movies have 100% on metacritic that have at least one review scored below that. (the godfather, for instance, has 14 100s and 1 80, still has a 100 aggregate)

idk if that applies to games as well but i can’t see why it wouldn’t.

Holy crap, I forgot about that sonic livestream! Haha! …Ehhhh, I’ll probably forget about it again come tomorrow though.

This seems another situation where Jim’s nostalgia (and apparently everybody else’s) doesn’t align with mine. For even though I played them when younger, they never really appealed to me. And playing them when older, they still don’t. Its like I’m an alien when I see everybody else praise them. So I don’t think I will get anything out of this unfortunately. Or maybe fortunately, in the sense my monies are saved for mysterious future ventures…

That’s perfectly fine, I feel the same exact same way about Zelda games, that’s one franchise that just never did anything for me(Mario has also become this for me because of how massively overexposed Nintendo made him).

I’ve heard co-op mode is still total garbage, it’s a shame the game didn’t make a proper split-screen or zoom-out option. Instead player 2 just eats shit all game, like always.

I wonder if re-focusing on 2D would be the best thing for Sonic considering that since moving to a 3D focus there have been a lot of shite games released. Maybe they will if Sonic Forces flops. Then again here are enough zealots who’ll defend anything Sonic so who knows?

BornFlunky
Guest
BornFlunky

I’m not gonna defend shite games, but the general consensus, at least according to review aggregates, is that most of the 3D games in the past decade have ranged from “decent” to “pretty darned good.” Colors, Generations, Lost World — None of them really tanked, critically.

Obviously, Boom did (for damn good reason), and although I actually enjoyed the night portions, I’m aware most everyone else only liked half of Unleashed. But Sonic’s bad rap is, perhaps, a bit -too- overshadowing. Their successes are far more important than their failures.

machine_dirty
Guest
machine_dirty

Right, and I think Boom’s failure had more to do with being an exclusive for a console that was not selling very well as opposed to it’s quality(after all Sonic 06 still sold well), I think it would’ve been a hit had it come out on the other consoles.

Planistar
Guest
Planistar

The quality of Boom was also bad, and one of the reasons for it’s financial failure. Specially when you compare it with the rather good and self aware animated series.

It’s a shame, though. That game had a horribly troubled development.

Shaded Spriter

I think having both the 2D and 3D sonic is a good thing for Sega – they might not be the best but there are people like me who still love Sonic Adventure, Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations.

I mean, it’s not like the whole last decade of games didn’t happen. There’s plenty of piss to take.

If they apparently are going to restrict what/how much of the game can be shown in a review…well they are indeed asking for that. Besides it’s always good to remind these companies when they done fucked up ;3
