I think Nintendo is ultimately doing away with the virtual console, in attempts to continue selling the NES and SNES Classic systems (which, both have sold incredibly well). They may continue to milk this concept for a while. As for the online service itself, I see it both ways. I don’t like the thought of paying to play MK8 or Doom after I’ve had it for free for over a year…that being said, I’m surprised they made it this long without charging for online services. Ideally, I’d rather not pay them at all, but for as long as Sony and… Read more »

I said this on Twitter, but honestly couldn’t tell if his closing statements at the end of the video were genuine or more subtle form of snark at Nintendo fans. The Smash statement being just the same game with a new coat of paint which seems to contradict previous things he said, odd given his statements about innovation sake and if he’s calling it a port, that got debunked ages ago. Same with the MK8D which I remember you given massive praise for which made the comment even more confusing? Am I being silly? Am I missing something incredibly obvious?… Read more »

“But Jim! You don’t understand!!!! The holy land, the holiest of holies known as Japan is a whole different culture, and the people – I say “people” but in reality they’re angels – do video games diff-” Nintendo is a worldwide company, genious. Which means that it is their job to find out how to market to different countries, and if what they do in Japan doesn’t work in America, that’s not America’s fault. That’s Nintendo’s for not adapting. “But Sony and Microsoft -” Are not Nintendo. Nintendo’s also a big boy, he doesn’t need you defending his shitty business… Read more »

I’m actually torn on the absence of a robust Virtual Console. I mean, yeah, it would be awesome to get all those NES and SNES games on the Switch, and I can think of several dozen I’d happily pay money for. BUT, such a thing would detract from the contemporary indie market on the Switch. Modern games from modern small devs, who could use the money instead. The indies have done really well so far, in part because the store isn’t flooded (though that is starting to swing the other way, and more than a few “meh” titles are making… Read more »

I really don’t understand why cloud saving is so important for consoles. This seems major for PC gaming where you get entire new PCs and new hardware and drives and whatnot…consoles that are for the most part static. I don’t play on console so I legitimately don’t understand why this is important enough to trigger an outcry since I last played console in the era of cartridge saves and memory cards. Corrupted saves seems like it shouldn’t be a thing for consoles too. Console games shouldn’t be crashing and fucking up to the point there is a chance it could… Read more »

“I’m the only one to say Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze wasn’t that good!”

Yes you are. Because you’re wrong. But hey, even a golden god like Jim Fucking Sterling, son can be VERY wrong once in a while. It’s like you show us your pity by being wrong on something in solidarity of our plebian imperfection. Thank God for you, Jim!

Seriously tho, great video. It just boggles my mind Nintendo sits on top of its amazing library of old games and does shit all with it. Is a fucking couple of emulators on Switch that hard to program?

Oh joy, yet another arbitrary and pointless expenditure that actually detracts from my escapism and doesn’t enhance it or my fun. Thanks, video games!
