Metabombed: Star Wars Battlefront II Is ‘The Epitome Of Years Of Corporate Greed’

Like a Star Wars Holiday Special, Battlefront II has left us all confused and feeling exploited.

The backlash was so huge, EA had to temporarily retreat and take the microtransactions out of the game. A disastrous Reddit AMA, worried investors, prying regulators, and mainstream news headlines forced them to pull back and find a more palatable way to deploy its glorified gambling.

However, that wasn’t before it received one of the biggest Metabombings in history. Oh yes, let’s get stuck in!

Metabombed: Shadow Of War ‘Should Be Quarantined And Destroyed’

Don’t even pretend you didn’t see this coming a mile away.

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War has become more famous for its boundary-pushing loot box system than anything else – and that’s a good thing, because any game designed to fleece its customers and exploit those with addictive personalities deserves to be known for nothing else.

While most professional critics glossed over the microtransactions – which, for all their defenders, really have had a dire impact on the game’s entire structure – many others have voiced extreme displeasure at this gacha simulator passing itself off as a “AAA” game.

And you know what means… it’s time for a METABOMB.

Metabombed: NBA 2K18 Is ‘The Definition Of Pay To Win’

In case you haven’t heard, NBA 2K18 is a mess of microtransactions, having adopted a full-on freemium economy in a $60 game. This isn’t just cosmetic stuff either – the game’s dominated by “Virtual Currency” that seems ripped from the shadiest of F2P mobile games.

2K Games’ greed was so immense that even the regular games media cared about it, an increasing rarity in a world where scummy business practices are becoming prevalent enough to generate only apathy from many reporters.

Anyway, let’s just cut to the chase. It’s obvious this wallet-flaying game was going to be review bombed to hell, so it’s time to launch the METABOMB and revel in public outrage yet again.

Metabombed: Destiny 2 Is ‘A Lie In A $60 Box’

As both a professional hater of the corporate machine and a videogame critic, one must walk a fine line between providing information on distasteful business practices and measuring said practices against the positive accomplishments of any given piece of work.

User reviews are subject to no such concerns, which is why METABOMBING a game for any reason in particular happens so often.

Destiny 2 is, for my money, a damn great game. A great game undoubtedly held back to some degree by Activision’s monetization tactics. I might have to take the time to weigh the good against the ill, but Metacritic’s community reviewers have let their feelings known with both barrels.

As you’d expect.

Metabombed: Mass Effect: Andromeda Is ‘Unbelievably Sad’

The review teardown of Mass Effect: Andromeda was something of a slow burn – while we can normally post a Metabomb article within a day or two of the game’s release, it took some time for the grudge against BioWare’s latest to push back those defending it.

I’m not exactly sure when the scales finally tipped, but as the humble historian who catalogues such things, it is my duty to inform you that Andromeda has been Metabombed!

Yeah, it’s ages since the game came out, but sod it. Let’s do what we usually do anyway. It’s content, right?

Metabombed: Mass Effect: Andromeda Is ‘Pure SJW Propaganda’

It’s a new Mass Effect, so you know what means – it’s time for everyone to behave like it’s 28 Days Later!

Yes, Mass Effect: Andromeda is the latest game from BioWare, a studio with a ton of fans who seem to be angry all of the time. This latest installment has certainly given rise to some outrage, with poor dialog, unpopular gameplay mechanics, and character animations that range from hilarious to ghastly.

Also, apparently “liberalism” is the reason this happened? What a time to be alive!

Do you think this game got Metabombed? Oh friend, they’re Metabombing the shit out of this one!

The Sad Ghost War Between Breath of the Wild And Horizon: Zero Dawn

The frenzy surrounding The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a whole new level of fan overreaction, and this is coming from someone who’s seen what happens when you say Uncharted isn’t perfect.

When they’re not busy launching DDoS attacks against outlets that didn’t like the game as much as they did, they’re being really very angry at Horizon: Zero Dawn, a game with very little connection to Zelda but has become a popular target of BotW‘s most delirious fanbabies.

Both games are huge open world experiences, and both are exclusive to particular consoles. This is of course a recipe for disaster where the two games were destined to be compared in the most vitriolic ways imaginable. Plenty of Nintendo’s zealots were furious when they learned of my own highly favorable review, and if you believe them, Zero Dawn‘s fanbase has had an axe to grind against Breath of the Wild for a long time.

The reality, however, is not quite as these wearers of green, pointy, tinfoil-lined hats would lead you to believe.

Metabombed: Dead Rising 4 Is ‘Awful, Just Awful’

Dead Rising 4 was released right at the beginning of the month, but folks are still unhappy about it. While I enjoyed the game myself, Dead Rising‘s veteran fanbase bristles with discontent at what they see as a “dumbing down” of the series and the removal of its best elements.

Usually, a controversial release like this would be drowned in negative Metacritic user reviews at launch, but it took some time for the negativity to boil over this time. Here we are though, on Christmas Eve, and what better way to celebrate a season of goodwill than looking at some really angry comments on the Internet?

Yes, Dead Rising 4 has been METABOMBED… at least after a relatively long period of accumulation.

Metabombed: Mafia III Is ‘A White Guilt Fueled Mess Of A Port’

Mafia III did not receive the critical reception Hangar 13 had perhaps hoped for. My own review is pretty reflective of the average score it’s gotten from professional critics, with the repetitive gameplay, cookie-cutter open world structure, and squandering of style being chief complaints.

Of course, the pros have nothing on the general public when it comes to expressing distaste for something, and Mafia III is the latest high profile game to get METABOMBED by disgruntled players on Metacritic’s user review system.

Much of the assault has come from PC users disappointed by the game’s demonstrably lacking port. Even after it was patched to include framerate options, Mafia III is failing to be everything it could be in the eyes of customers.

Let’s check out what they’ve been saying. It’s “content” I suppose, innit?

Metabombed: No Man’s Sky Is “Worthless In Every Way”

The horrifying frenzy around No Man’s Sky continues unabated, and as with any potentially controversial game release, the furor runs both ways – there are zealous defenders who refuse to accept a single criticism, and obsessive detractors who need the world to know just how much they don’t like a thing other people like.

Is it any surprise, any surprise at all, that Hello Games’ procedurally generated crafting game is the latest target of a good ol’ fashioned Metabomb?

Yes, it’s that time again. Time to wade into the user reviews of Metacritic as a power struggle has emerged between No Man’s Sky‘s lovers and haters. Let’s put on our biohazard suits and get knee-deep in the filth, shall we?
