Talent Is An Asset (The Jimquisition)

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition
http://sharkrobot.com/collections/Jimquisition-merch

On this constructively critical Jimquisition, we explain how using pre-bought videogame assets isn’t inherently wrong, and how they’ve been put to good use.

We also have a CASH CONTEST going on to reward anybody who can prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that talent is an asset.

(That’s the name of an old Sparks song!)

CONTEST RULES/GUIDELINES:

1. Create an original character using the “Horrid Spider” Unity Store asset as the foundation.
2. Send it to jim at thejimquisition dot com with the subject line “Horrid Spider Contest” and IMPRESS ME!
3. Include the name you’d like to be credited by and permission to show IF you’d like it shown.
4. Include your Paypal in case you win.

Contest ends January 15th.
Winner will be announced January 22nd.

It is somewhat ironic that those who sell assets seem more talented than those who use them to make games. (Not everyone but…you know…) Anyway, this looks very much like that argument about the Unity Engine. Although it is base engine for many terrible games, generally speaking, Unity is a fucking great tool, fully capable of making awesome games, IF it is given to right hand. Unity Engine is not inherently bad, but it has bad reputation because so many people are abusing it to make meaningless asset-flips. It doesn’t take genius talent to learn how to use game engine… Read more »

*sigh* This was stupid timing. Announcing a competition DIRECTLY after Christmas just when everyone’s holidays are already over. And ONLY two weeks? As the JImquisition is on a Monday. That’s like one weekend, and surely the following weekend you yourself will be judging the entries? You should have made it a month at the very least or started the competition before Christmas.

Yet despite this, there has already been a large number of entries.

I’m sure there would be more, and of less rushed and better quality had there been more than 2 weeks and announced in a time when most people hadn’t gone back to work.

Welcome to the internet, where anonymous people will bitch at you for offering them free money.

Wasn’t it mentioned in the video? Regardless I would assume the email on the contact page.

I think this contest is a bad idea and pretty much the antithesis of the point in the video. Today’s video is about how assets aren’t the problem, it’s devs not putting in the proper time and effort in to build context for those assets, all because they care too much about making a quick buck. And the contest is an exercise in trying to make a quick buck, with low effort and time, while prominently featuring an overused, stand-alone asset. If Jim wants to actually enlighten young developers as to what ought to go into using Unity Assets, he… Read more »

Well, we’ll have to see how it goes. I personally think two weeks is too short. Only already talented programmers will be able to enter this as there isn’t enough time to novice or learning programmers to get good enough in such a short space of time. I think the idea of this contest is sound, just wish there was more warning and a better time. I just hope that we don’t see hundreds of shitty entries, which as you say, might ironically create tons of crappy and slapdashed together entries due to lack of time.

If these are judged on a basis of “would jim still praise this if it were sold for $5 on steam”, I doubt if any entries would be accepted. I can’t rewatch the video at the moment, but I believe it’s only one week to submit entries, and then a week until winners are announced. Jim’s already hinted that dozens of entries came in within hours, which… how could that possibly be good? Programming is totally doable in a week, and that’s not where I think quality is gonna go to shit. I used to do a lot of game… Read more »

The contest is to create a still image. Where are you people getting the you have to make a whole game. Try listening/reading. It says “create a character” not make a game.

The contest is use of the asset in an original way that isn’t limited to programming.

Why would only programmers be able to do this. You do understand that this is an art contest, to edit the art asset in a visually interesting way. All you’d need is Photoshop or anything like that. Did you actually bother to watch the video or read the description? Or did you just rush off to start whining about the idea Jim had and not worry about small things like “facts” or “being fundamentally wrong and making an ass of yourself?”

Less than 2 mins in, after i stopped laughing, made an account just so i could say how fucking funny the gimp suit gag was.
Funnest thing I’ve seen this year.

Well that explains why Jim bought a Kazoo at least.
Gonna guess at some of the creative stuf we’ll see; not just re-textures and the like but people doing stuff like creating a comic about the adventures of that headspider, or animations of it pooping out the word ‘fukonami’. And someone will inevitably create porn of it. Or a dating sim. Or both.

You know it’s going to happen.

Assets are like salt – a little bit of it can enhance a good meal, but if you notice it enough then it spoils the whole dish.

My favourite asset flipping series has to be either Dynasty Warriors or Saints Row

I have no talent, therefore: Preemptive grats to the winner of the rather large prize of $500.

I’m not being sarcastic. That is a huge prize even before considering the value of the artwork compared to its contemporaries or the originator of the contest. I had to spend that much this morning to get a car fixed and it almost made me cry for how much we were spending.

I know, right? I have just been totting up how much I need to spend on my computer upgrade (as I had better do it now, while I have the pennies, than later this year, where I might not ansd thus be buggered if anything was to fail) and I’m sorely tempted, since it’s in that sort of ballpark. Sadly, my talents lie in completely different areas (CAD 3D Print designer for wargames models) – though I’d nearly be tempted to flip my own assets as it were – take one of my existant spider-robots, add four more legs and… Read more »

Yeah, if you can do CAD design you can whip up a proxy headspider but with butts instead of a head or long gangly slenderman legs or whatever.
