The Business Of Lies (The Jimquisition)

This week’s episode is brought to you by Sterdust, a totally original wrestling persona that WE OWN. We OWN it, WWE!

Anyway, in an industry of liars, even the good guys lie, and those lies can be good lies.

But what happens when lies become so commonplace and acceptable? Then the bad guys lie… and they can’t understand why they’re not the good guys.

Here’s to hoping that the morons who berated Laura and defended that game company have the worst case of diarrhea while interviewing for their dream job. Great job, idiots (note that I’m only speaking to the aforementioned morons who berated Laura and nobody else) for proving to the rest of the world that you are idiots.

Previously, professions well-known for cultivating liars included politician, used car salesman, and real estate salesman. Are we going to need to add “game development studio head” to the list?

Nobody else may have noticed, but you can’t slip by that cover of the old new intro in front of my observant ear glands, no sireee! It is an easily adaptable tune indeed.

Have you considered doing a Jimpressions on the recent Elex that has been released, by piranha bytes studios? I’m not enquiring on the basis that I think it might be good, oh no, quite the opposite. Your suffering sustains my existence. I also keep confusing that studio with the spiders one that did the orc thing, except maybe this one is consistently bad? Eh, nevermind, SUFFER!!!

Lol. You think Sean Murray is a bad liar. Man, when the Star Citizen project finally collapses the scale of what lying in the games industry is is going to have to be adjusted, Murray is going to seem mere trifler, a petty criminal. Chris Roberts and his 162 million dollars of crowd funded money, some of which himself and his family have taken themselves to get rich, is going to be the fucking god of lies. The dude is going to damage the whole idea of crowd funded games. I hope he doesn’t get an easy ride just because… Read more »

Telltale lying about a second season of Wolf Among Us not happening and then announcing it around E3 mostly seems to have occured with little commentary.

I never was a one to listen to Hideo Kojima’s lies mainly because as soon as I find out it is a Kojima game I go on a media blackout from pre-release news on it Only sometimes watching the trailers. But I am not sure the lies mentioned by him are lies (Excluding “This is my last MGS game.” one) – His teaser trailer stuff for “The Phantom Pain” and P.T. is that these are all puzzle games in marketting form. Like the “we like bees” ARG back in the early 00s these are things designed for fans to play… Read more »

Also, I feel like the lies thing also applies to the community as well, from Gamergaters twisting incidents and quotes to make them sound like “The SJW are evil!!!”, from the people who memeify reviews scores and lie about the critics actual opinions. From the corporate defenders who lie in the name of the overlords, to edgelords who lie about what a dev has done to harass them.

Gaming can be so toxic.

Not game industry, but during my earliest days in my Film and TV Production degree, we were told that if you ever wanted to get far in the either industry, you had to become an expert con artist, learn to say little white lies, stretch the truth and the ability to sell something if you want to see you own creations ever come to reality (or course we were also taught not being an arsehole to other people, especially those in jobs like Sound Editing and know when admit your wrong).

*Gasp* It’s almost as if you’re making a difference by stating the truth and companies are starting to notice that people are no longer accepting their bullshit. Jokes aside, it’s now officially proven that you’re a force to be reckoned with in the industry Jim, and that now only gamers but publishers/devs and retailers are listening. They may not like what you have to say, especially when you lambaste them on a regular basis, but people are starting to take notice and call them out on their shit, largely in part thanks to you and others like you. Thank you… Read more »

Technically the Watch Dogs footage wasn’t bollocks, the game really was capable of looking that good, but according to Larry Bundy Jr’s show “Fact Hunt”, executive meddling caused those advanced effects to be disabled on the PC port so that it would be on par with the console versions as Sony and Microsoft were not about to let their consoles be shown to be considerably behind in specs compared to PCs, but it’s easy enough to find and enable them on PC so that the game does look very much like that E3 2012 trailer. The reason why developers deny… Read more »

You should probably be careful, Jim. At this rate the big game corporations are going to start sending in the assassins.

Companies should lie more. They need to set up huge expectations and drop them HARD on release. They need to do this over and over again. They need to make us hate the industry and make us lose all inherent trust we have in the devs before we actually see their game in our hands.

Maybe, given fifty or so years of this kind of behavior, people will finally stop pre-ordering.

Awesome! But wait, does your shirt reads “StarBust”? sounds like copyright infringement! Off with their heads! 🙂
Belial, the Lord of lies? That’s Diablo lore no? But, according to Wikipedia, in The Satanic Bible (The Book of Belial), Belial means “without a master”.

I think the No Man’s Sky thing happened because the game went basically overnight from scrappy little indie that nobody had really heard of to full price Sony tentpole and that meant Sean Murray got wheeled out for all the big events and interviews on national TV all over the place and literally did not dare ever answer no to any question he got asked in case it made this thing that Sony had dumped wheelbarrows of cash onto look bad. It’s not quite like Molyneux, who would invent random bullshit right there in the interview that someone would then… Read more »

For Sean Murray it is very possible (and indeed is probably what happened) that he either just ran out of resources or that his ambitions were just too huge for reality to make possible. ….However it stops being understandable and starts to feel a little insidious when he didn’t tell anybody before release and STILL hasn’t told anybody after. All he had to do was make an announcement that some features wouldn’t make it into the game or even say that he’d be working on patches post launch. But no. He said absolutely nothing until people made such a big… Read more »

I can hardly remember when was the last time I got so excited at something being announced by “AAA Game Companies”. News and reports have become meaningless to me at some point back in the past. The only way to confirm whether something is true or not is to wait until they finally release goddamn game. Many people are now aware of that and patiently try to wait for it. But I’m pretty certain there will always be fair group of crowd who would cheer at utter shit that is being thrown at their faces by these PR people cause… Read more »
