This week’s episode is brought to you by Sterdust, a totally original wrestling persona that WE OWN. We OWN it, WWE!

Anyway, in an industry of liars, even the good guys lie, and those lies can be good lies.

But what happens when lies become so commonplace and acceptable? Then the bad guys lie… and they can’t understand why they’re not the good guys.

Here’s to hoping that the morons who berated Laura and defended that game company have the worst case of diarrhea while interviewing for their dream job. Great job, idiots (note that I’m only speaking to the aforementioned morons who berated Laura and nobody else) for proving to the rest of the world that you are idiots.

Previously, professions well-known for cultivating liars included politician, used car salesman, and real estate salesman. Are we going to need to add “game development studio head” to the list?

Yes, we are going to need to add “game development studio head” to the list.

Nobody else may have noticed, but you can’t slip by that cover of the old new intro in front of my observant ear glands, no sireee! It is an easily adaptable tune indeed.

Have you considered doing a Jimpressions on the recent Elex that has been released, by piranha bytes studios? I’m not enquiring on the basis that I think it might be good, oh no, quite the opposite. Your suffering sustains my existence. I also keep confusing that studio with the spiders one that did the orc thing, except maybe this one is consistently bad? Eh, nevermind, SUFFER!!!

Lol. You think Sean Murray is a bad liar. Man, when the Star Citizen project finally collapses the scale of what lying in the games industry is is going to have to be adjusted, Murray is going to seem mere trifler, a petty criminal. Chris Roberts and his 162 million dollars of crowd funded money, some of which himself and his family have taken themselves to get rich, is going to be the fucking god of lies. The dude is going to damage the whole idea of crowd funded games. I hope he doesn’t get an easy ride just because… Read more »

Everything I’ve seen from the game so far looks like it’s fully delivering on the promises and then some. There are over 300(!) people working on the game – I assume they aren’t just twiddling their thumbs all day but maybe you have insider information to contrary? The pre-alpha available right now showcases the game and its features pretty well. The original estimated release date, on the other hand, well…

“Fully delivering” – what that hilarious mess of a demo at gamescon? Also, from what has been seen so far of the accounts actions like Erin Roberts selling 400k of shares he was given by his brother for free back to the company to basically get backer money for himself doesn’t look too pretty. Mo-cap studio built and Hollywood stars hired for a game (Squadron 42) that has now been postponed without limit. Maximum 24 players an instance in what is supposed to be an MMO. Beyond it all the sheer absurdity of people spending > 10k on ships that… Read more »

As Anton correctly points out there is a sort of “cult” (for lack of a better word) surrounding this game. That doesn’t make it scam. People are voluntarily coughing up this money and you can’t point to addictive gambling lootboxes to explain it. And imo all the demos they’ve shown have been incredibly impressive. That said, for the sort of budget they have we shouldn’t expect GTA V levels of polish on this thing, which had a US$ 265 M budget BTW, let alone Destiny’s US$ 500 M budget. You really need to keep expectations in perspective and remember that… Read more »

Since Star Citizen hasn’t yet been released, maybe we outta wait before deciding it’ll be the crowned emporer of all liars, eh R.M. Renfield, hmm? Now, maybe that’ll happen, or maybe it won’t. Right now, however, we’re well within our right to wait and see, and criticize No Man’s Sky in the meantime.

The problem here isn’t that there aren’t talented people working on it. The problem is that the constant delay and feature creep paint an unflattering picture of Roberts’ management capabilities. There’s still a decent chance that the game will be good when it ships, IMO, but there is also a very real possibility that the lack of leadership will unravel the whole thing if the money dries up. Also, the paid pre-order ships are a scam, pure and simple. The argument that “people just want to donate money” is a load of shite, if they just wanted to donate they… Read more »

See, this is what I don’t get – it’s not comparative. There doesn’t have to be One Top Dog of Liars and then everybody else gets off the hook for not being that much of an asshole. Chris Roberts getting his when the day comes doesn’t change or ameliorate anything Murray did.

You compare a project with regular wall-of-text developer posts and changelogs as well as playable public alphas to a game where a year before release nobody even knew what the bloody thing was supposed to be.
It’s obvious you are on a serious vendetta and if you need that in your life, whatever, but get some perspective regardless. And maybe look up what lying entails.

I never was a one to listen to Hideo Kojima’s lies mainly because as soon as I find out it is a Kojima game I go on a media blackout from pre-release news on it Only sometimes watching the trailers. But I am not sure the lies mentioned by him are lies (Excluding “This is my last MGS game.” one) – His teaser trailer stuff for “The Phantom Pain” and P.T. is that these are all puzzle games in marketting form. Also, I feel like the lies thing also applies to the community as well, from Gamergaters twisting incidents and quotes to make them sound like “The SJW are evil!!!”, from the people who memeify reviews scores and lie about the critics actual opinions. From the corporate defenders who lie in the name of the overlords, to edgelords who lie about what a dev has done to harass them.

Gaming can be so toxic.

Chris

It’s not just gaming, it’s “nerd culture” as a whole. We define ourselves entirely by the consumer products and mass market entertainment we consume. And those things aren’t bad, but too many people take any “attack” on a game as an attack on their sense of identity, and they perceive “outsiders” like women or people of color getting into the things they like as taking that identity away from them and making them less special. And once you’ve decided your way if life is under attack lying seems like it’s entirely justified and righteous. You stop even thinking of it… Read more »

Not game industry, but during my earliest days in my Film and TV Production degree, we were told that if you ever wanted to get far in the either industry, you had to become an expert con artist, learn to say little white lies, stretch the truth and the ability to sell something if you want to see you own creations ever come to reality (or course we were also taught not being an arsehole to other people, especially those in jobs like Sound Editing and know when admit your wrong).

Technically the Watch Dogs footage wasn’t bollocks, the game really was capable of looking that good, but according to Larry Bundy Jr’s show “Fact Hunt”, executive meddling caused those advanced effects to be disabled on the PC port so that it would be on par with the console versions as Sony and Microsoft were not about to let their consoles be shown to be considerably behind in specs compared to PCs, but it’s easy enough to find and enable them on PC so that the game does look very much like that E3 2012 trailer. The reason why developers deny… Read more »

If it’s in the ad and not in the product, it’s bollocks. Very simple rule to follow. The “why” is largely irrelevant. If Ubi was forced to remove the high-end visuals, they should have said so before release.

Michael Prymula

Michael Prymula

You know they never will.

Technically the assets were in the PC version, they just were not enabled by default.

Anton

“Technically” doesn’t do it for me. There is no acceptable excuse for false advertising.

PRACTICALLY, I had a game that didn’t look like the E3 reveal, all while running poorly on high-end hardware.

Chris

Look I know the package for this food said “100% real organic ingredients.” We had those ingredients in the factory, ready to go, and we technically did include them in the first test batches. But management decided not to use them, but if you break into the factory and get them yourselves they’re still there. So technically we didn’t lie.

I just hope our loyal customers will continue to angrily defend us years down the line like the game industry’s do.

Funny you should mention that, the food industry is particularly guilty of this sort of thing, as many studies show that organic food has no real benefits over non-organic stuff.

No, Michael, they lied it is also simple as that. The footage shown was not representative of the final product. If the footage shown will never resemble the final product then that footage should not exist. You are lying to your potential customers by showing that footage.

Michael Prymula

At the time they may not have known the final product would not resemble that, because Ubisoft was unsure of how powerful the new consoles would be(i’m guessing the PS4 and XB1 could’ve handled those advanced effects just fine).

drownedsummer

I more than likely suspect they were well aware it wouldn’t and more also most likely aware of what the specs for the new consoles would be as well. But that footage was still not representative of the end product meaning it was falsely advertised which means they lied.

Yes. It was bollocks. Because it wasn’t just the graphics that weren’t up to par. It was the super advanced AI as well. Whenever you fuck with a stop light in W_D random pedestrians do NOT run to the cars to help. The drivers just kind of get out of their cars and stumble around like they weren’t in the car to begin with. Unless of course that was held back by the suits as well and you can totally turn it on.

Nitrium

Not sure why your comment is being modded down. Certainly your Watch_Dogs point is correct in so far the PC version is concerned. I guess the fact you needed to edit files in the first place is a major issue regardless. That said, I played it with graphics every bit as good as the trailer after “tweaking” certain .ini files and adding a SweetFX filter (all very easy to discover online, and something I routinely do for most games, especially a nice SweetFX filter). Maybe the “lie” is that they didn’t specifically state that the console versions wouldn’t also look… Read more »

The ‘lie’ is that that would be the product out of the box, you shouldn’t have to mod or edit a game to get it to look like the trailers and screenshots a company is showing you just weeks before release. Well after they would have known that they were downgrading the graphics to match the sub-par console ports. They also never told anyone that those graphics would only be on the PC version, they presented that as representative gameplay footage, complete with lies about how good the AI would be and how many emergent systems you’d be able to… Read more »

Companies should lie more. They need to set up huge expectations and drop them HARD on release. They need to do this over and over again. They need to make us hate the industry and make us lose all inherent trust we have in the devs before we actually see their game in our hands.

Maybe, given fifty or so years of this kind of behavior, people will finally stop pre-ordering.

I think the No Man’s Sky thing happened because the game went basically overnight from scrappy little indie that nobody had really heard of to full price Sony tentpole and that meant Sean Murray got wheeled out for all the big events and interviews on national TV all over the place and literally did not dare ever answer no to any question he got asked in case it made this thing that Sony had dumped wheelbarrows of cash onto look bad. For Sean Murray it is very possible (and indeed is probably what happened) that he either just ran out of resources or that his ambitions were just too huge for reality to make possible. ….However it stops being understandable and starts to feel a little insidious when he didn’t tell anybody before release and STILL hasn’t told anybody after. MuddyScarecrow

But at some point the man needs to realize that what he’s doing is not helping anybody in the long run. I heard that old Petey Boy would announce features that his own dev team had absolutely no knowledge of and had to start working on because he couldn’t keep his fat mouth shut.

There’s a similarity. Though check out most of the bits of interview in the video. Most of them are “interviewer asks about specific feature, Murray says yes”. I think he just didn’t dare say no to “will you have feature?” because of all the Sony money. If you’ve ever heard the distinction between lies and bullshit, it’s that when someone is lying they know that what they are saying is untrue, but when they’re bullshitting they don’t know whether it’s true or not. What Murray and Molyneux do are bullshit. It’s not that they know for sure that the feature… Read more »

The issue seems to be one of leading questions. Ed Wood routinely answered questions in the affirmative when a studio exec or sponsor wanted to know if “X” was true of the film he wanted to make. They want it? Great! Say yes. Keeps them happy.

Like most people in his position, Murray decided he would deliver the smiles now and worry about the details later. But also like in Ed Wood’s case, “later” meant “not at all.”
