The Jimquisition: A Bitter Post-Mortem Of Modern Warfare Remastercarded

New Jimquisition, Old Grudges.

It’s time for another of our grisly post-mortems, as we pick up the rusted scalpel and cut open Modern Warfare Remastered.

Here’s how Activision turned one of the most influential shooters of all time into the worst game of last year.

Bonus Content: Oh, Ubisoft!

Love the new look.

The animation in the new intro is spot-on, thought the music could be improved IMO. Needs more thunder and bombast (or maybe some creepiness, to go with the new carnival theme).

OMG! I love the new intro, the set, the pyrotechnics! For the love of Jim though, if you break that cane, that precious massive rod of Jimness that you trust upon us.

The Jim-obots/Jim-icons logo might be a biiiiit much though.

Loving the new look Jim.
You make being the demented ringleader of a carnival of madness look effortless.
Also, the Jimquisiton has needed that cane for a very, very long time.

Even though Activision had it coming for getting of a bit easy the last couple of years, I would really wish if you could plug some of the games that do a good job from time to time. I mean, while everyone knows about the s…tuff triple AAA publishers keep throwing at us, only few can keep track of smaller developers that are the complete opposite. Allow me to state one example: Shovel Knight Yacht Club has recently released the second DLC to Shovel Knight that is – again – COMPLETELY FREE for buyers of the original game. Since the… Read more »

I agree. Pointing and laughing at the BS “AAA” publishers cynically throw at us is important but we should also celebrate the ones that do it right to set examples of what SHOULD be the standard (aka. basic fucking respect for the consumer).

By the by, has Jim ever ackowledged Shovel Knight/Yatch Club for the extremelly well-made kickstarter and game/practices as a whole? I know I kept waiting for him to talk about Stardew Valley and how awesome ConcernedApe was being when the game came out, but he never did.

Sorry to double comment. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but Jim didn’t explicitly state that Modern Warfare Remastered NEEDS you to have the Advanced Warfare game did he? Last I heard, that was the case anyway.
(As in you can’t trade in Advanced Warfare and keep Modern Warfare. You need the game you potentially don’t want to play the game your interested in)

The last time I played MWR was last December, and you did need to have the IW disc in your system, or have it installed if you bought digital, for MWR to play.

It’s Infinite Warfare, not advanced, but otherwise you are right, you had to get one of the pricier versions of Infinite Warfare to get MWR. Though IW is actually more popular on Steam then MWR is.

Also surprised Jim didn’t mention how MWR is going to be coming out by itself in a few weeks.

*Infinite Warfare. Thanks to other commenters for pointing it out.

So I watched this at 6 in the morning (time i get up for work) and initially I liked the intro animation and didn’t like the song. At work now and rewatching the intro as I suspected it was a combination of unfamiliarity and my mind being asleep at 6am. Lo and behold the song has grown on me quite a lot! Oh yeah, love the new aesthetics of the show. The circus theme seems much more appropriate given the constant shit show the game industry is. Also, what was in the bin in the intro animation? I could make… Read more »

That cane… Jim is a magical girl now. But, yeah, this is kinda sad. Call of Duty 4 is actually a good game, even if we’re only looking at the single player campaign. It’s the only modern-style FPS I’ve actually enjoyed. I’d be totally up for a shiny, better version to replay on my PS4 if it weren’t for… All of this. And on the subject of Far Cry 5… All I’d heard about that game originally was that it’s set in Montana, which I was initially pretty skeptical of. I mean, it’s not exactly an “exotic” locale, is it?… Read more »

I don’t understand why you’re so hung up on this topic. Seems like an overreaction.

Because when one publisher blazes the trail for a new low, the others will catch on if it pays off. A lot of games that would otherwise have been good on their own, would then be marred.

Love the new Ascetic. Carnies are great (unless they have Elephants, then burn them to the ground).

Hate to be that person but can’t say I’m a fan of the new look and theme…but you can’t please everyone and it’s the content I’m interested in, not the window dressing. I was expecting the new motif to be more “The Sheriff of Greenlight/Steam/Gaming” and less “here is some carnie sideshow.”

Miles Saintborough

Considering all the freaks (bad games and/or actual freaks behind them) he showcases, it’s pretty much a carnie show.

George

I agree thematically it’s more on point. Duke Duh’ardcore and Jimsaw feel more at home in a show like this.

But one of the Major advantages to this new theme, El Chica is that it allows newcomers to much more easily see how performative the character of “Jim Sterling” is. In short, it makes the show more accessible.

Miles Saintborough

Pretty much. Jim said he’s an entertainer and critic.

El Chica Incognitus

I understand the reasoning behind the whole carnie/circus thing but in my mind Jim does less putting a freak show on display for funsies and more rooting out the corruption in video gaming. The notion of being a ringmaster is also a bit too passive to me and implies a tacit approval of all the bad behavior he puts on display or implies he’s putting it on display purely for his personal gain.

I will also admit I have a personal bias and have never liked the whole carnie/circus theme no matter who or where it is done.

I’d like to add that I agree with the ringmaster thing. I’d also like to point out that that’s probably reading a bit much into it. It’s because it’s a zany wacky thing. Which is coo’. But I’ve been here more for anti-sponsorship and vague grassroots feel Jim has. I agree with his politics with his (from what I can tell, I’m not a devout Sterlington or whatever the cult is called) views on consumerism, race, and sexualities. So yeah, I kinda miss the old intro if only because it seemed more anti-authoritarian. I have to clarify tho, it’s his… Read more »

I agree. I find it tacky tbh.

And I don’t like the music intro. It’s not that I’m in love with Drill Queen, but I always liked Jim for his anti-corporate and proper liberal stuff.

I kinda miss the outsider sound and look the old intro had, with its self aware facist look.

The song already exists prior the theme, it’s an actual band and stuff.

Jim, have you considered buying an old 1980s VHS camcorder to film the Cornflake Homunculus segments on? They’re really cheap and it would give a more convincing gritty and ugly feeling than your current grainy editing filter.

Good call there. Might be annoying to convert for use in video though.

Inevitable commenter: “Oh Jim, not this again – you keep on bringing up microtransactions and the shitty business practices and the pricings and the this and that and the businesses will keep on doing it because of reasons so just give it a rest already! Uh, no stupid, hypothetical commenter – it’s the fact that the shitty companies keep on doing this that Jim SHOULD keep on going on about it. If you want him to shut up about it, then maybe the businesses doing this shit should stop. You know, like how your mom tells you to clean your… Read more »

As an aside, your comment on Far Cry 5 is a bit off. This kind of story has historical precedence. The US military has had to be called in, multiple times, to crush such religious extremist uprisings in the past. We don’t talk about it much because it’s rather shameful to the country and it’s politically incorrect to mention things conservatives don’t want linked to The Conservative Brand™, but it has happened. Jonestown is obvious, but not the only one. There’s the Mormon Wars / Utah War, clashes between mormon militias and US army troops all throughout the 1800s. the… Read more »

It’s difficult to describe without supplying links, but I would like to recommend trying the very niche music genre that can only be described as evil circus music. More specifically a group called Circus Contraption, that are wonderful musicians and all keep a camp, varied style of homicidal desires and other sinister deeds. Merriness and evil!! Taha!! Great showmanship I’d think you’d appreciate given this new look (and sound). 😉 Anyways, in case a person is unlucky/foolish enough to still be reading, best intro tracks are ‘wicked fascinations’, ‘hot potato’, ‘we are all mad’, ’23 beers’, ‘the animals are behind… Read more »

Adding onto the evil circus idea, I would also recommend a band named “Creature Feature.” Think they only released two albums ever but they clearly held a carnival of the dead/damned theme with their music and production. 😀

Name sounds really familiar, I shall check them out as the aforementioned Circus Contraption has stopped since one of their most distinctive singers died, and it seems difficult to find anything else like them. Thanks! 🙂

I feel almost resigned now to never picking up a AAA game at release. It’s simply way too expensive now to get the definitive edition. There’s too many games coming out now for me to consider buying the ones laden with microtransactions, that want to take and take and take and make me feel like shit for not giving more. And it’s our fault. It’s normal for people that have paid $60+ for a game to be referred to as leeches. Leeches, for Christ’s sake. People are expected to be so fanatic, so uncritical of companies that even if you… Read more »

Content-wise I feel this is the most important Jimquisition episode since the “Fair Use Protection Program” one – when you combine that with Jimquisition 3.0, I think this may go down in history as the single most monumental Jimquisition episode ever.

thank god for Jim.

The Jimquisition: Rebranded is an impressive piece of work, almost as impressive as the continued inability of some consumers to stop supporting terrible business practices.

Seriously, considering exactly how many things people expect for free today, you’d think they would be much less receptive to paying more for a product than they did the first time around with noticeable negative adjustments.

The only thing I really dislike about the new theme is that “Transformers” transition. I think it’s a bit long and it breaks the flow of the video.

Otherwise, it looks pretty cool. I love the carnival theme.
