The Jimquisition: A Cautionary Post-Mortem Of Evolve

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition

Battleborn is not the only 2K Games release to have suffered indignity this generation. Evolve, more famous for its DLC model than anything it did as a game, was another multiplayer shooter that failed to do anything better than fail.

The fate of Evolve serves as a cautionary tale to any would-be project banking on additional content to make its money. Audience goodwill is a finite resource, and when you push for excess at the expense of quality, you might just find out how finite it is.

Have always been a fan of Jim’s work. However including clips of violence, violence on unprovoked people, is never cool or justified.
Inciting violence takes away your own moral ground and just means you’re at worst, no better than your enemy.

Just hoping Jim doesn’t get sucked down the regressive left hole like a lot of celebrity lunatics are these days, but I’m sure he is more intellifgent than that (here’s hoping anyway)

I’d like to think this would be a cautionary tale …… but if anything has become obvious over the years…… it’s that (industry) never, Never, NEVER learns the correct and frankly obvious lesson from this shit. They manage to pull out some bizzaro world conclusion that just serves to justify to them a doubling down on the very shit that caused them to fail in the first place.

With this episode, Jim has sprouted and cultivated a Bullshit Tree-logy of Evolve episodes. Too bad he didn’t use the Bullshit Tree terminology here…

I enjoyed Evolve, but the core gameplay wasn’t as good as L4D versus mode, which is sort of what I was hoping for.

Felt the same way too. Really disappointed that each game took place in just a single, large, arena style map.

Here’s hoping Turtle Rock’s next game will be closer to a L4D successor. Vermintide is the only thing out this generation that’s come close to a L4D style game.

L4D mod sold as a separate game on Steam and also a good example of what Jim was talking about in regards to first impressions. The initial launch was very poorly received. The game is bad and it was later relaunched but still mostly terrible. It is dirt cheap on Steam though about $1.50 or something.

Just look up Jim’s video in his Jimpressions series.

Huh, interesting. I usually catch most of the Jimpressions, guess that’ll be something to rewatch later. Doesn’t ring a bell in the slightest.

I have bought it but not played. Several freinds started playing L4D2 on weekends and as this was dirt cheap I thought it would be amusing to see how bad it is.

It’s very old, like first year he took YouTube seriously old. I believe it even pre-dated Chunky Play, which means he was still employed at Destructoid.

I’m fairly sure it was at the point he had started doing Squirty Play videos at that point.

Also look up Total Biscuit’s WTF is video of that game.

When I see run around with blue and green lightning splattering everywhere, I am reminded that I don’t think I’ve sat down to play a video game for two years now. Oh I want to. They are just all puerile shit that I need like a hole in the head. Embarrassing.

Certainly bitching about them is an enjoyable use of your time instead. Stupid disqus, I’m certain I blocked this chucklefuck once already.

It’s criticizing trends, but also questioning what Jim sees in this title that warrants dedication to a Jimquisition. Yes DLC. Yes popular? I thought Left4Dead was Valve and not this company, but whatever. But what if Barbie Dream House was popular. And what if it was chock full of DLC. Would we get a video on Barbie’s Dream House? I think probably not. So why a video on blue and green running lightning splatter? It just seems so depressingly dull. What is the point even? Is this of any cultural significance? Call me confused. Is it beautiful? Insert enigmatic Werner… Read more »

There’s nothing confusing about it at all. Video fully explains everything regarding the subject matter.

Yes I remember. So three videos in total. The beautiful game. My confusion is why we elevate this kind of game and not others? What makes shooty colored lightning spree so important to discuss? There is definitely discrimination on the basis of content. It would be one thing if this were Dynasty Warriors, but it’s not. The video even goes so far as to lampoon the “groundbreaking FPS.” Why can’t we get over this genre? It seems like the lowest form to me. I guess I just don’t see its inner beauty. I’m sure my life would be so much… Read more »

There were 3 videos explaining each of the foolish choices Turtle Rock chose to head down. This final piece is Jim’s opinion on why the game died.

If you don’t agree with the video why not just post the question, and offer another story that Jim may wish to look into.

It isn’t being discriminated because of the fact it’s a shooter it’s being used as an example as how not act pre and post launch as both a developer and publisher. You seem to be focused on the wrong point. The infrastructure surrounding it and the decisions by the developer and the publisher is what is being discussed here that it is a shooter is a minor element. The DLC pre-order and post launch is the central focus of the video. Why elevate this game? Cite another game then thatdid things in exactly the same way as Evolve and suffered… Read more »

Exactly, Jim wants this to be an example that you can’t always throw in every cynical money-grabbing tactic in the book and get away with it.

At a time when nearly every AAA game is designed to double dip into the audience’s wallet, this serves as the best example possible for a point Jim has been trying to make for a long time: when you make a game to be nothing but a vehicle for baldfaced profiteering you neither get a good game nor an enduring financial success.

Stormbringer

But I think the reason it died, and for the post-mortem, is it simply isn’t compelling. I seriously doubt DLC is ever a decisive factor. People are not that principled. If they were DLC wouldn’t be so prominent as it is.

Which Jim also stated. I’d suggest going back and watching the first video to see exactly how much DLC there was and the cost of it.

The reason for the jimquisition isn’t because the game itself is good or interesting, but because the marketing is

Stormbringer
Guest

But which was its Achilles’ Heel? I don’t think it was the marketing. And what makes it interesting to the average reader? There are four Jimquisitions per month. Why is this game worth three? Seems like a waste to me.

Drake Warnock

Well, short answer is that Jim wanted to and we pay him to do what he wants.

If I had to wager a guess as to why he wanted to, I’d say that Evolve just does everything that Jim hates about the AAA market. Lot’s of microtransactions in a full price game, hype and preorder culture, insubstantial game to back all of it up, etc..

Stormbringer
Guest

Yes, and the comments section is where we get to interrogate Jim and inform his decisions, and wonder aloud at them in search of answers.

drownedsummer

We don’t inform his decisions which is a key point on his Patreon. We aren’t paying for an echo chamber for our opinions just funding Jim so he can produce videos regarding subjects he wants to discuss.

Stormbringer

Everything informs everything. You are looking for the word dictate or something like it 🙂

drownedsummer

Three over two years don’t describe it in a way which makes it seem as if this has been the subject matter for three weeks.. If you’re questioning why then I’d question why you’re watching a video series which is largely about anti-consumer practices and poor decisions made by both a developer and publisher with Evolve being a very good example of things Jim has been talking about for years.

Yes, there are three videos on Evolve. There are far more videos with Jim discussing this subject matter it isn’t just three as it’s basically the Jimquisition since its inception.

You can just be happy go lucky. You guys didn’t have to respond to my interjection in the first place. I can tell you that my feelings on the matter don’t deserve more than a quip. An upvote will do.

It’s a dead horse if it doesn’t keep happening. DLCs being announced before the game is even released is still a thing. Evolve is the perfect example of that taken to 11 over 10.
