Every time you talk about Inside I feel like you are spoiling Inside for me. You keep saying of the ending “fleshy” and “meaty,” there are corpses and pigs everywhere, there is an industrial farming theme. JIM, STOP SPOILING INSIDE. W/E IT IS YOU ARE SPOILING IT. EVERY TIME. JESUS. I FINALLY GOT ENOUGH DISTANCE FROM YOUR ORIGINAL REVIEW WHERE I COULD GET AROUND TO PLAYING IT WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT THE HINTS YOU DROPPED ABOUT THE ENDING AND NOW YOU DO IT AGAIN. I don’t normally care about spoilers but this is some heavy duty spoiling of a game which… Read more »

I would like to give a shout out to Uncharted 4. It may not be the deepest, most technically impressive game, but as an experience, it gave me what I wanted: A pulpy, joyous rump through impressive scenery, with a dash of historical exploration, fun dialogue, and comedic flair with some legit emotional points here and there. Solid fun for the whole family. Also bonus points for having the best “final boss” as it were in the entire series. On hard difficulty it was a legit challenge backed up by the good writing and cinematic flair of the series that… Read more »

I really appreciate the lack of fee-to-pay games on the list, the choice to not include them automatically biases the listing away from the usual triple-A suspects and big name releases so that genuinely great games without a huge budget behind them can actually get a look in. Most of which are usually forgotten in the hype-tsunami that overwhelms everything released before late October. Looking back at my own gaming for the past twelve months there’s a huge deficit in things that actually released this year, though I suspect this isn’t exactly unusual around here. XCOM 2 I only just… Read more »

Good list Jim.

My golden 5 would be as follows; Doom, Titanfall2, Hatsune Miku:Future Tone, Dark Maus and Unbox. With honourable mentions to Dark Souls3 (which lost out due to not fixing the targeting system and making too many bosses punish people with a magic build), Battleborn (poor guy), Stardew Valley and Redout.

Meh, Superhot is overrated IMO, I agree with Yahtzee on that game, that game thinks it’s WAY more clever then it actually is.

Glad you at least gave Titanfall 2 an honorary mention in spite of its “microtransactions”, Jim.

This year was relatively bad in my opinion.

My own top 5:

1) Rise of the Tomb Raider ( PC version at least, i don’t own a console)

2) Deus Ex Mankind Devided

3) XCOM 2

4) Overwatch

5) Offworld Trading Company

Still, aside from Rise of the Tomb Raider, which i found incredible and definitely recommend it, the rest of the games are just 9/10s, AKA very good but not exceptional.

Couldn’t care less about Doom, which i found Overrated, and Dark Souls III which in my opinion is bad game design masquerading as “difficulty”.

It’s funny. Growing up in the 90s my favorite FPS of the time was Duke Nukem. I loved its modern setting and its arrogant but irreverently hilarious protagonist. On the flipside with Doom I found its environments boring and I always hated how “The Doom Guy” didn’t have a name or even a personality.

Flash forward to 2016 and Doom is one of my most anticipated games to play after I get a modern console and I won’t touch Duke Nukem Forever with a chunk of my own feces. Life is funny that way.

My top games would be Titanfall 2, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, XCOM 2, Oxenfree and, although it split opinion, Quantum Break. As for Jim’s picks I can at least understand all of them except Pony Island which is the only one I’ve not played at all.

For me I didn’t play alot of Triple A games this year, partially due to funds and my computer becoming older by the month (I could still play Dark Souls III reasonably well, if everything is turned low), and a lack of a current gen console for much of the year (Though I just got an Xbox One S, so there’s that I guess). So much of what I played were indie games, but alot of great indie games. But anyway here’s my list: Hyper Light Drifter: Me and my brother both backed this way back in 2013. It has… Read more »

Great picks Jim. Looking forward to the next list too. =w= b

Also, I freaking love the Cornflakes Homunculus. xD
Kelloggs really should buy him off of you.

I’d say you should feed this year’s shittiest games to him, but that would just be cruel…to him. ;p

I gotta say I disagree across the board, but I totally respect that you enjoyed those games.
I thought most of them, Doom being the exception, were insanely boring and blew their loads in the first hour and then coasted.
But instead of starting a salt company, ill just say good on you Jim, and I’m jealous you had such a good time.

Now go play Space Hulk Deathwing you glorious kissy boy.

Aside from Dark Souls, it’s surprising how low-key these selections feel. Pretty nice choices.

My GOTYs:
1.: Firewatch
2.: Dragon Quest VII
3.: REIGNS
4.: Kindred Spirits on the Roof
5.: Xanadu Next

Honorary mentions: Stella Glow, The Legend of Legacy, Dragon Quest Builders, Kirby Planet Robobot, Rabi-Ribi, The Westport Independent, 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, Project X Zone 2, HW Legends

Old stuff I played this year and also liked: Undertale, Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, Life Is Strange, Senran Kagura Shinovi Vs.

Disappointment(s): I am Setsuna not being great, Cosmic Star Heroine still being delayed

Still need to get: Va-11 Hall-a, some VNs, probably DOOM (not big on the Shooty Bang Bang Stuff, but maybe DOOM gives me something)

My GOTY is Stardew Valley. It’s got almost everything you could ever want out of a farming game / life sim / dungeon crawler.

I was looking at this year’s reviews on the site to try and predict the top 5 but there was some many 8.5-9/10 + this year I couldn’t get it right. (I had Watch Dog 2 and Owlboy over Super Hot and Doom). It really was a great year for games that’s for sure.

Man, now I want to go back and play DOOM again. It’s a little baffling how good that game was, especially given how wary everyone was going in.
