I would like to give a shout out to Uncharted 4. It may not be the deepest, most technically impressive game, but as an experience, it gave me what I wanted: A pulpy, joyous rump through impressive scenery, with a dash of historical exploration, fun dialogue, and comedic flair with some legit emotional points here and there. Solid fun for the whole family. Also bonus points for having the best “final boss” as it were in the entire series. On hard difficulty it was a legit challenge backed up by the good writing and cinematic flair of the series that… Read more »

I really appreciate the lack of fee-to-pay games on the list, the choice to not include them automatically biases the listing away from the usual triple-A suspects and big name releases so that genuinely great games without a huge budget behind them can actually get a look in. Most of which are usually forgotten in the hype-tsunami that overwhelms everything released before late October. Looking back at my own gaming for the past twelve months there’s a huge deficit in things that actually released this year, though I suspect this isn’t exactly unusual around here. XCOM 2 I only just… Read more »

Good list Jim.

My golden 5 would be as follows; Doom, Titanfall2, Hatsune Miku:Future Tone, Dark Maus and Unbox. With honourable mentions to Dark Souls3 (which lost out due to not fixing the targeting system and making too many bosses punish people with a magic build), Battleborn (poor guy), Stardew Valley and Redout.

Does Future Tone have anything particular to recommend it over Project Diva X?

Diva X only has around 30 or 40 songs for full price. Future tone on the other hand is two game packs; future sound is made up of the old diva games for PS3,PSV and PSP, and colourful sound is made up of the arcade games and Nintendo DS. Each pack has around 114 songs! as well as over 100 costumes for each. To buy both packs will cost about the same as Diva X, but will have around 180 more songs. If you are an older gamer like me you will also appreciate the fact they have included songs… Read more »

Future tone was the first one I played big screen and it took some getting used to. However having them 60fps meant less latency and that was really nice. I still haven’t played Diva X, but i’ll be PS4 less for a while so ill probably get it for my vita when i get home.

No diamond you’re quite free to like whatever you choose but as always your lack of explanation as to why you like certain things when the general consensus is that they are reviled that lack of explanation leads to responses such as the one above. You don’t have to provide an explanation but you also can’t really act like an arse when people question things if you refuse to give an explanation.

It’s not even that I personally don’t like those games, it’s that there is nothing in them which could possibly be recommended. I hate Dark Souls but I know what could draw people to it.

That’s just your opinion, NOT a fact, critics HAVE given those games positive reviews, deal with it. You’re dead wrong, there are things in those games that could be recommend to people, Spiders games have a loyal fanbase and there were a number of people who did like the first Homefront game and think the new one is also pretty good, you can’t just pretend like those people don’t exist.

A game which there’s nothing that can be possibly recommend is the shit that regularly ends up on Steam like Mortos.

And that would be the case if this were an isolated situation. Sadly it isn’t is it? You constantly voice your appreciation for things which many dislike and don’t offer any explanation as to why. Then when someone questions this due to the lack of explanation you get defensive despite the fact maybe if you provided that explanation in the first place that probably wouldn’t occur.

Yes, they may not have been asking politely and because this isn’t an isolated situation that would most likely be why.

Wrong, I found the narrative very engaging, the combat really fun, the aesthetic pleasing to look and the RPG elements pretty good.

Sorry diamond but I’m gonna have to agree with 09phili on Technomancer and Homefront: The Revolution. Those are not good games but more like insults to potentially good ideas for one on the basis that they botched the execution that badly.

This year was relatively bad in my opinion.

My own top 5:

1) Rise of the Tomb Raider ( PC version at least, i don’t own a console)

2) Deus Ex Mankind Devided

3) XCOM 2

4) Overwatch

5) Offworld Trading Company

Still, aside from Rise of the Tomb Raider, which i found incredible and definitely recommend it, the rest of the games are just 9/10s, AKA very good but not exceptional.

Couldn’t care less about Doom, which i found Overrated, and Dark Souls III which in my opinion is bad game design masquerading as “difficulty”.

It’s funny. Growing up in the 90s my favorite FPS of the time was Duke Nukem. I loved its modern setting and its arrogant but irreverently hilarious protagonist. On the flipside with Doom I found its environments boring and I always hated how “The Doom Guy” didn’t have a name or even a personality.

Flash forward to 2016 and Doom is one of my most anticipated games to play after I get a modern console and I won’t touch Duke Nukem Forever with a chunk of my own feces. Life is funny that way.

diamond

I thought Duke Nukem Forever was an underrated game, though to be fair I had never played Duke 3-D(due to never owning a fifth generation console)

Doom Guy did have a personality in the Doom comic(which Linkara reviewed) so if Doom gets a sequel i’d like to see his character go in that direction.

Maybe, but I still thought it turned pretty good despite it’s troubled history, it was just nice to see an FPS game that didn’t take itself so seriously, as most FPS games in 2010-2011 were pretty serious(nothing wrong with that, but a change of pace was welcomed)

For me I didn’t play alot of Triple A games this year, partially due to funds and my computer becoming older by the month (I could still play Dark Souls III reasonably well, if everything is turned low), and a lack of a current gen console for much of the year (Though I just got an Xbox One S, so there’s that I guess). My GOTYs:

5.: Xanadu Next

Honorary mentions: Stella Glow, The Legend of Legacy, Dragon Quest Builders, Kirby Planet Robobot, Rabi-Ribi, The Westport Independent, 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, Project X Zone 2, HW Legends

Old stuff I played this year and also liked: Undertale, Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen, Life Is Strange, Senran Kagura Shinovi Vs.

I agree that the map isn’t good, but it’s not too complicated to learn where things are. It’s daunting at first, so just start from scratch and go slow.
