Whelp, glad to see the AAA devs are still not above screwing the pooch in every way they can due to their own shortsightedness and (intentional?) contempt for the people they want to get money from. My biggest question is: who the FUCK decided that promoting the DLC before you even properly announced the game was a GOOD IDEA? That’s like selling a television in order to sell a house. “Oh, well here’s this awesome television that will look lovely in your lovely new home that we haven’t even shown you yet!” Oh man…I thought we learned from Watch_Dogs and… Read more »

It is part of what I call the Patching Culture, the sell know, complete sometime in the future syndrome. Once you hook people with the hype, you (apparently) can sell them anything, sight unseen, and people will not only buy it but go to online forums and defend it!

I love having physical media. I prefer to have all my games physical and not downloaded if I can help it. I love blu ray and all the special features. Sure, having digital copies can make things easier, but nothing beats physical media in my mind.

It’s only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down. Pre-order DLC used to sell me on the perceived exclusivity of early adopter items. Rocking pre-order gear a year or two down line would be pretty sweet. Except for the reality that all pre-order items for the games I’ve bought to date ended up being made available later or cheaper, that that there isn’t a single game in recent memory that I played for more than a year. Basically, developers have already shattered the illusion of exclusivity. Spend enough time seeing how easy it is for a piece… Read more »

I’ve got to give TR credit for this much: what I’ve heard is that it’s possible to play with players who have various pieces of DLC even if you, yourself, do not. In that way, at least, they’re trying to make it easier for the player than they could have. Otherwise, yeah… It’s a mess, and it’s a shame, and it’s… all too typical, which should never ever be confused with “acceptable”. Tangentially related, as Jim brought it up: what the hell is up with “rental copies” of DVDs that make the viewer watch unskippable commercials and omit commentary and… Read more »

Oh good. If I can play with people without needing to have the DLC myself then I’m back on board. I almost never purchase DLC unless I’m absolutely in love with the game (Skyrim comes to mind) and I never EVER buy season passes, aka the ultimate money wasters. Even though I’ve had a blast with the Beta, I don’t see myself ponying up money just to get an extra playable character. I will purchase the game, more than likely enjoy the game, and that will be that.

Worse, IMO…

So, was at a friend’s for New Years, and How to train Your Dragon 2 was being shown for the kiddos.

Got through all the trailers, and on the menu, someone hit the wrong button and ejected the disc.

Ok, NP, pop it back in, and skip the…wait…all those trailers are unskippable? On a PURCHASED disc?

HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If TR required all players in a match to own the particular DLC, it would kill the market for DLC. Who would pay the price for a new DLC monster if he could only play against the other hundred people who bought that monster, and even then for four out of five matches he’d be playing a regular hunter? The option to buy piecemeal means that you can’t restrict matchmaking to only group players based on the DLC that they own, else some players might never be able to find full matches just because they bought an uncommon combination of… Read more »

Jim, what is the symbolism behind the picture of the shrimp?
I always see you post it in ironically stupid situations or when someone does/say something self-defeating, but what’s the secret behind the shrimp itself?

You’re right, Jim. You’re absolutely right. I’ve been playing Evolve since the Big Alpha, including during this beta ( which was not nearly as Xbone exclusive as we were led to believe, it was just marketing nonsense, presumably because of microsoft paying extra ) and I think that it’s a fantastic game, and I am going to buy it. And you are absolutely correct, they did so much damage to the game’s image that it’s not even funny, which is really a shame because I honestly think the game itself is the best multiplayer thing I’ve played since TF2. One… Read more »

The game definitely looks good, but I won’t be pre-ordering it.. I might consider it down the track when some of that dlc bullshit has faded, because it looks like a great game. Shame that marketing dickheads can be as much of a hindrance as a help, with their ‘milk the consumer’ attitude. This cow aint for milking, fellas.

I hope” the buss pass love story” has 6 different ending’s and i can pre-purchase the cover, or maybe Jim will be having a bundle where you can get the main story chapter 1 and the cover, plus alternate audio for naughty knots for your tie. Wow one can only hold out hope. The Evolve game held my interest ! Just not enough DLC for me you know it’s gonna be shitty without more pay walls. Was on the fence about this game, and the DLC bullshit pushed me right off of it. 60 bucks – or, realistically, much more than that – saved. Thanks, Turtle Rock.

Off-topic, but videos of this game make my brain give up. There is too much contrast and stuff happening on every screen, it’s information overload, and you certainly can’t take anything in visual wise. Of course it’s the same for just about every big budget game and blockbuster action extravaganza. Whatever happened to naturalism being the thing to shoot for? Every game for me today is like navigating through bullet hell by the seat of your pants. Which seems like not what you want for a person-scale adventure. Even though modern warfare may be like bullet hell, at least the… Read more »

Did they change their mind on their stance on future level content? That actually annoys me in other games *vastly* worse than anything Evolve was pushing, since it’s getting you to pay for content that you’re *never* going to get to use due to how games use matchmaking lobbies and playlists to get games going. The last statement on it that I saw was that all new maps/levels were going to be free for everyone, so to not split the community. I assume this DLC nonsense was the compromise they had to make with their publisher to at least make… Read more »

In other news, can anyone recommend some GOOD games with this kind of asymmetric multiplayer? I too like the idea and want to see it done well.

I don’t know if people still play it, but The Hidden was pretty cool. One player was an invisible, knife-wielding, wall-jumping murderer, while everyone else was a Special Operations team trying to take it down.

There’s Giants: Citizen Kabuto – perhaps the original ‘asymmetric’ multiplayer game. Evolve seems like a poor man’s Giants to me…

Natural Selection was like this, aliens vs space marines(with teams though). I really enjoyed that back in 2000-ish(?), and the sequel looked like it was well done, but I never played it in its heyday and servers seem empty now.

Hopefully they did well enough with 2 to make a 3 so I can get in on the ground floor.

The problem with the so called triple A industry isn’t the DLCs, season passes, laziness, sequels, prequels.
Rather I see the problem as the sheer excess of all. It’s not that they did something wrong, it’s that they keep doing, and doing, and doing, and doing, ad eternum. This industry became the cancer of itself.

At least we still have some intelligent people to give us some insights and show us how things can be better.
Hope dies last.

Keep up the good work Jim!

Nice. For some reason, I had it in my head that Evolve was a Valve game. So imagine my initial surprise and dismay upon hearing that it was packed to the gills with DLC bullshit. Thankfully, I was wrong. But honestly, this doesn’t surprise me too much. Watch_Dogs more-or-less got away with it, and now it’s time for other people to take a crack at being absurd and obtuse. What does surprise me, however, is that the developers themselves, a studio I’ve never heard of until right now, were the ones that wanted to push the DLC onto the customer,… Read more »

Sadly liquidated and sold it’ IP rights to other companies (Take-Two, Ubisoft, Sega, Crytek, Koch Media/Deep Silver), what was left unsold & it’s publishing logo rights was bought by Nordic Games in the end. Their senior staff may still have some licensing issues to pay off to Nickelodeon & Pixar, they were a massive publisher that got big on license kids games, died by it too…

Well let’s consider who their publisher is before we start blaming turtle rock for what this game has become. (2k) and watchdogs? Really? How’s about borderlands 2? Or borderlands even. DLC/season pass out the ass in those titles too. And the predate watchdogs by a bit now Dont they?

Except neither BL game had ridiculous pre-order, special edition, and digital packages that were full of unnecessarily minced-up bits of content. The worst I saw for BL2 was the special edition heads, and the single “horde mode” arena and starter gun pack pre-order bonuses- none of which had any significant effect on gameplay. You’ll likely never hear me complain about a Season Pass (unless it’s announced BEFORE the game is released), but I have no problem with going after terrible DLC practices. And yeah, Watch_Dogs. This is not the sort of practice that “just somehow to becomes common”. It needs… Read more »

Spot on. As you yourself often say, DLC isn’t a bad thing, but the AAA industry always finds a way to turn something good into something abominable. That’s why I am recently compelled to play only Nintendo games. I don’t feel cheated when buying Nintendo products. They don’t “release a buggy mess now, patch it later”, and their DLC policy is mostly spot on (that Mario Kart 8 DLC was indeed very cheap, not on disc, not cut from the original product, etc), with notable exceptions being Hyrule Warriors (that has too much DLC and not fairly priced IMO) and… Read more »

I feel the DLC for HW is pretty well priced. It’s a ton of content for $20 (assuming you buy the Season Pass), and I’ll be getting it as soon as I finish all the main stuff. Well, not ALL of it. That challenge mode is bullshit. Though I do agree about NSMB2’s DLC. It’s definitely not for me.

But! Diff’rn’t strokes for diff’rn’t folks.

I’ve been getting into the HW content packs as they’ve been rolling in, and I must say it actually might be a bit too much stuff, which however does make it well worth the Season Pass if you actually feel like playing more. I haven’t quite completed everything in the main game yet (still a few third rank weapon battles in Adventure and that very last Skulltula in Legend, not to mention a whole lot of other A-ranks to grab. And yes, Challenge is BS, but nevermind that.) But I’ve found a lot of the stuff in Master Quest (which… Read more »
