The Jimquisition: Now Sony’s Being Silly About Cross-Platform Play

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition
http://sharkrobot.com/collections/jimquisition-merch

First and foremost, The Jimquisition went to Mississippi Comic-Con and I got roughed up by Jason Voorhees.

Of lesser importance is our main story. Cross-platform play is being embraced by both Microsoft and Nintendo. As with mods, Sony’s being a spoilsport again.

As Minecraft and Rocket League let Xbox One and Switch players interact, PS4 folks once again get stuck with inferior products.

While it is an anti-consumer move, I don’t know why you haven’t recognized yet that there are plenty of business reasons for Sony not playing ball. Because they are so far ahead in player-base, remaining walled off forces players to get a PS4 if they want to play with the largest group of people on console. If they open up crossplay, they make it easier for people to choose to get another console. This works the opposite for Microsoft, because opening crossplay makes it easier for people to choose the Xbox since they’ll still be able to play with their… Read more »

I think we’re talking about very minimal potential slicing of these bases, since the matter only affects certain games and certain people. The problem is that it becomes a story for everyone; what *if* a future game makes me want to use crossplay but I can’t? But the argument goes another way, too. If you’re an obsessive Rocket League player, for example, crossplay isn’t just about standard play but forming parties/teams. Being the biggest platform wouldn’t help there – everyone has their preferred system and they’re not budging much, with each system having very high representation to this day. And… Read more »

I can’t see this becoming an issue, until some of that stuff that people actually double dip on, to play with their friends, start adopting Cross-Platform Play. Like, those weirdos that buy multiple copies of Call of Duty, because their poor friends don’t own the same consoles, and stuff like that. And even then, I don’t know, mange. Also, Minecraft, only has Cross-Platform Play with the Windows 10 version, which is an inferior version of the game that is less complete, runs worse, and has payed Skin Packs that aren’t anything you couldn’t do with Mods. Fuck that version. You… Read more »

Gotta admit I am kinda disappointed by the comments and responses. I respect Jim’s opinion, though I disagree here, but again the fanboyism that exists in gaming is just disappointing. We are all gamers and should not hate so much. I think Sony made a good call here, and anyone who thinks MS would not have done the EXACT SAME THING (if they had the same market-dominating position as Sony does) is kidding themselves. It just takes a little open-minded thought to work it out, and I very much don’t see why Jim decided to make an episode about this.… Read more »

Its a good business move in the short term for the reasons you gave.
The thing is that resting on your laurels because you’re in the lead is a bad idea. And something we have seen before, which (I think in part) is why this was a topic worth covering.

Nobody’s calling Sony a villain, its just another example of every other competitor in the market striving to be better than the market leader while the leader thinks they are untouchable and need not change.

Hi Jim. Love your videos and I’d like to know your opinions on the other side of a similar scenario which is Final Fantasy 14. The game’s director has publicly expressed interest in having cross-platform play between consoles to release his game as a multiplatform game. But the thing is it is currently only released on Sony’s console and PC. Wouldn’t it be a bad decision for Sony to have cross-platform play because Sony would lose console exclusivity on its own game?

FF14 is a Square-Enix game. As far as I’m aware it was mostly console exclusive due to Microsoft’s patching policy at the time and features cross platform play between those two userbases as it requires connecting to PlayOnline.

PlayOnline was FF11, FF14 uses “The Lodestone” and “Mog Station” as their account management and log-in systems. You are correct though. MS wanted all in-game patches to be approved in advance and not distributed through the Square-Enix network infrastructure. There was also no waiver for the patch fees that MS was charging at the time, despite the success of Cross-Platform FF11 which had done (and still was doing at the time) quite literally the exact same things SE wanted for FF14. And to top it off, there was no planned exclusion from Xbox Live which meant players needed to pay… Read more »

I don’t get the reference, but I also quit the game 2 years ago and only just restarted with the expansion. I also don’t follow the game on social media, so I won’t catch references to YouTube or the like.

I think some technical aspects are being ignored here. I’m not an expert by any means, nor am I agreeing with Sony, but if you want to allow interplay between different consoles, then you need to assure that you are maintaining a clean, bug, abuse and cheating free experience between users, and that isn’t something you can control on your own anymore. Consoles are walled gardens, completely controlled by the companies that run them. They reserve the right to kick players off or force developers to follow certain rules. There are obvious reasons Sony would like to completely control this… Read more »

I am a long time fan, but Jim’s points seem to have been slowly degrading in rationality for a while now. If I’m being honest, its VERY hard to say from a business AND non-business standpoint if Sony is making the right move. I’m under the impression that the Xbox community is infinitely crappier than Nintendo and Sony’s communities? I’m basing that off of my experiences with Xbox 360’s online community, and people complaining about their online community on forums. I have not EVER played any Sony console after PS1. Microsoft fucked up 4 years ago. Fucked up royally. But if you’re still judging the Xbox brand from 4 years ago, then you’re the one who is uninformed. They did a major restructuring in the Xbox department at MS, moving and firing a lot of people. They undid every unpopular feature of the original XOne reveal. They are constantly adding new features to the service, and have probably the fastest, most secure and robust online service among the consoles (PC gaming still reigns). And unlike Sony, who slapped together a mostestly more powerful box and called it Pro, the One… Read more »

On theory I’ve had is that Sony’s online system just isn’t robust enough to handle it at this time. Reporting trolls, griefers, or harassers is impossible unless they directly message you….but if they do it throughout the course of a 20 minute game they get away with it. PSN looks nice but accessing information is rather slow and doesn’t get updated nearly as fast as the Xbox One. The store has frequent payment/downloading issues (at least for me). They don’t even have the system infrastructure to handle changing your PSN ID whereas you can on Xbox Live. I think they… Read more »

Jim said something bad about Sony and nice about Microsoft, so they saw it as an opportunity to bash Sony repeatedly for barely related or unrelated things.

Oh he’ll still do it, just not on this video. He’ll save it for disagreeing with every opinion Gav and Laura make on this week’s podcast then begging Jim-sempai to notice him and review Ghost Recon or whatever game he’s ok about right now.

He thinks that if he just hurls enough insults around that people will be intimidated into not asking him these questions. He also seems genuinely incapable of holding a conversation at any level without thinking of it as an intensely personal argument. Cross-platform is a losing proposition for everyone. At least until more than 2 games have it and communities can better form around their own tastes. Sony not playing ball is just an artifact of them not seeing the point, and I kind-of have to agree that there isn’t a point in trying for just 2 games. Psyonix itself has been describing the necessary action to get RL working on all platforms as “flicking a switch” since the first year of the game, and they’ve done so over and over again in the intervening time. I don’t think they’re being glib. They really mean “we’ve done all the work, just give us the nod”.

That just means that they have done the work already, just in case they get the “go ahead” to enable it. Why is it gross that kids like something? Because that’s overwhelmingly what Minecraft’s audience is at this point, it’s something that’s super popular with kids. And I don’t think it’s any worse than anything I was into or that kids were into back in my day.

Why? People still play Super Smash Bros Melee, Skyrim, WOW and Tetris? I don’t get it?

No, because I don’t really see why we would use such a description. Gross, would suggest feeling physically disgusted by it. Curious? Odd? That several quite old games are still considered relevant? Sure, but this is due to companies capitalizing on the money they are making from those games and not pushing anything forward. A sad state of things but not one which I would ever describe as gross.
