The Jimquisition: Now Sony’s Being Silly About Cross-Platform Play

First and foremost, The Jimquisition went to Mississippi Comic-Con and I got roughed up by Jason Voorhees.

Of lesser importance is our main story. Cross-platform play is being embraced by both Microsoft and Nintendo. As with mods, Sony’s being a spoilsport again.

As Minecraft and Rocket League let Xbox One and Switch players interact, PS4 folks once again get stuck with inferior products.

While it is an anti-consumer move, I don’t know why you haven’t recognized yet that there are plenty of business reasons for Sony not playing ball. Because they are so far ahead in player-base, remaining walled off forces players to get a PS4 if they want to play with the largest group of people on console. If they open up crossplay, they make it easier for people to choose to get another console. This works the opposite for Microsoft, because opening crossplay makes it easier for people to choose the Xbox since they’ll still be able to play with their… Read more »

I can’t see this becoming an issue, until some of that stuff that people actually double dip on, to play with their friends, start adopting Cross-Platform Play. Like, those weirdos that buy multiple copies of Call of Duty, because their poor friends don’t own the same consoles, and stuff like that. And even then, I don’t know, mange. Also, Minecraft, only has Cross-Platform Play with the Windows 10 version, which is an inferior version of the game that is less complete, runs worse, and has payed Skin Packs that aren’t anything you couldn’t do with Mods. Fuck that version. You… Read more »

Gotta admit I am kinda disappointed by the comments and responses. I respect Jim’s opinion, though I disagree here, but again the fanboyism that exists in gaming is just disappointing. We are all gamers and should not hate so much. I think Sony made a good call here, and anyone who thinks MS would not have done the EXACT SAME THING (if they had the same market-dominating position as Sony does) is kidding themselves. It just takes a little open-minded thought to work it out, and I very much don’t see why Jim decided to make an episode about this.… Read more »

Hi Jim. Love your videos and I’d like to know your opinions on the other side of a similar scenario which is Final Fantasy 14. The game’s director has publicly expressed interest in having cross-platform play between consoles to release his game as a multiplatform game. But the thing is it is currently only released on Sony’s console and PC. Wouldn’t it be a bad decision for Sony to have cross-platform play because Sony would lose console exclusivity on its own game?

So Justin wrote on twitter apparently there is a gag nobody has spotted in the credits yet (cant remember if he said intro or exit). Let put our heads together and figure it out by going through all the references: – Roller coaster is a boglin, 3 skeletons are wearing helmets (skeleton warriors?) – Pachinko machines combined with pog fucker, pyramid head, steam cleaner poster – skeletor throws a dart at balloons with different corporate logos (ubisoft, nintendo, warner brothers, sega, konami, activision, bandai namco and I THINK EA but its partially offscreen) – prizes include the barbarian (barbarian could… Read more »

I think some technical aspects are being ignored here. I’m not an expert by any means, nor am I agreeing with Sony, but if you want to allow interplay between different consoles, then you need to assure that you are maintaining a clean, bug, abuse and cheating free experience between users, and that isn’t something you can control on your own anymore. Consoles are walled gardens, completely controlled by the companies that run them. They reserve the right to kick players off or force developers to follow certain rules. There are obvious reasons Sony would like to completely control this… Read more »

Oh Sony, Sony, Sony. I like them, I really do. I like their products, I love their games, and in many cases I’ve liked their business decisions (namely when it leads to more awesome games). But too many times do they suddenly stick their heads so far up their asses they turn inside out.

I’m too much of a nerd. I actually squealed at the sight of Romana’s pink frock coat in the background when you went to the Doctor Who booth…display…thing.

HEY JIM PLEASE READ!!! Firstly, I just wanted to write that your videos really help with my spirits. Thank you. Today was a pretty tough day at work. Secondly, regarding the “wrong e-mail/video/Alex Mauer harassment” situation…try not to let it get you down. There is a difference between “your viewers” and “people who view your video that day” any random internet shit head that watches a related video by someone else will then get a link to your video in the suggestions section of youtube. I doubt that your regular watchers are transphobic trolls. Also, In my line of work,… Read more »

I am a long time fan, but Jim’s points seem to have been slowly degrading in rationality for a while now. If I’m being honest, its VERY hard to say from a business AND non-business standpoint if Sony is making the right move. I’m under the impression that the Xbox community is infinitely crappier than Nintendo and Sony’s communities? I’m basing that off of my experiences with Xbox 360’s online community, and people complaining about their online community on forums. I have not EVER played any Sony console after PS1. Is there anyway to play ONLY with other Switch players… Read more »

On theory I’ve had is that Sony’s online system just isn’t robust enough to handle it at this time. Reporting trolls, griefers, or harassers is impossible unless they directly message you….but if they do it throughout the course of a 20 minute game they get away with it. PSN looks nice but accessing information is rather slow and doesn’t get updated nearly as fast as the Xbox One. The store has frequent payment/downloading issues (at least for me). They don’t even have the system infrastructure to handle changing your PSN ID whereas you can on Xbox Live. I think they… Read more »

Jim said something bad about Sony and nice about Microsoft, so they saw it as an opportunity to bash Sony repeatedly for barely related or unrelated things.

If it isn’t Diamond, it’s an unrelenting MS fanboy who loves the chance to bash Sony. I think we can all agree they are just as bad and unhelpful as Captain “Homefront is Great”.

1. Holy fuck that Jurassic Park Ford Explorer is the tightest shit; is it a replica or is it from the movie itself??

2. i wish i could meet you at a con ;-;

3. I’m pretty upset about Sony being so shitty about cross-platform play. Minecraft is one of my top favorite games of all time, and I’m all over more people getting to play it via consoles/mobile/whatever else (even if I really only play the Java Edition).

Why do I get the sense we’re going to get some PS4 fanboys on this?

Cross-platform is a losing proposition for everyone. At least until more than 2 games have it and communities can better form around their own tastes. Sony not playing ball is just an artifact of them not seeing the point, and I kind-of have to agree that there isn’t a point in trying for just 2 games. MSoft and Nintendo need to step up their offerings beyond these 2 old but very popular games if they want this service to be relevant to ANYONE outside of those game’s communities. I would love cross-platform ESO. It would give me an excuse to… Read more »

On the subject of the Alex Mauer repost footnote video: Wait… what? People were dumb enough to not only think that the email presented with the subtext “for those with DMCA claims” or something similar, but to also harass the email account holder as if they were Alex Mauer? Normally I cut myself off when saying “There are people online dumb eno… oh nevermind; of course there is.” but this is a new low…

It wasn’t long ago we were praising Sony for pro-consumer attitudes like not locking down physical media to the console/account like Microsoft was planning (back when the PS4 and XBO were first announced). But to be frank about it Microsoft gave Sony all the material they needed in that E3 to do what Sony does best: Be smug arrogant bastards. It’s likely Sony already had no intentions or desire to lock things down to hamstring the used games market; there was no media dramatizing the “used games market problem” in Japan. There have been significant leanings from used game retailers… Read more »

I may be coming to the end of my rope with the Jimquisition. There is far too much short sighted and poorly thought out content that is drowning out all of the good that you used to do so well. It almost feels like coming off the Digital Homicide trash heap of a lawsuit you have been emboldened and arrogant. Why does this feel familiar? Your argument seems to boil down to “I want this, therefore it’s good. They aren’t giving it to me; therefore they are bad.” Recently the lines between “Jim Sterling the character” and “Jim Sterling the… Read more »

It’s true, success breeds complacency. Once a company get on top, they think they no longer have to try. Sony’s E3 conference was exactly that, them not trying. Spending a whole lot of money on theatrics, because they can, but not showing off anything new or immediately relevant. Sure, lots of good games, but most of them were shown off last year, and most of them coming out in 2018 or later. And they sure as hell didn’t try that hard to justify the PSVR’s existence. It’s why I want Xbox to catch up. Not surpass, just close the gap.… Read more »

The first console I ever owned was the original X-Box and then I moved on to the 360. Slowly over the course of the 360’s lifetime my apathy towards Microsoft slowly turned into hatred. It is now at the point that I hate the 360 more than I love that big ugly black box MS sold me all those years ago (which still works, but I had to replace my 360 3 times).

Am I the only one who thinks it gross that in current year, Minecraft is still considered relevant?
