The Jimquisition: Now Sony’s Being Silly About Cross-Platform Play

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition

First and foremost, The Jimquisition went to Mississippi Comic-Con and I got roughed up by Jason Voorhees.

Of lesser importance is our main story. Cross-platform play is being embraced by both Microsoft and Nintendo. As with mods, Sony’s being a spoilsport again.

As Minecraft and Rocket League let Xbox One and Switch players interact, PS4 folks once again get stuck with inferior products.

When did Xbox Live have a good name?

It’s 100% understandable that Sony doesn’t want to share their much bigger users base with Microsoft, especially if those users would have to log in XBox Live to do so. Give it up and quit the whining.

I’m still going to delete threads that become volatile, so please remember to show basic respect. If you see someone posting something you disagree with, keep it civil and do not harass. One account has already been deleted, with the associated messages cleared. I’d rather that be the only time I need to do that. Also, please do not start hunts for “sock puppet” accounts on here. I know we have a user who frequently makes new accounts to comment from, but unless they are directly harassing someone, please do not try to “identify” them. I’ve seen people trying to… Read more »

My only hope in the future is that moderation is less of a blunderbuss, effective at what it does when it works but leaving a mess behind regardless of working. Deleting comments seems to confuse wpDiscuz, and they appear out of order or attributed to the wrong comment chain.

I hold no grudges about my own comments being deleted when and if it happens. I am an asshole, and hold no illusions about my nature otherwise.

justintimeforsupper

Yeah, I’m hoping so too. At the moment it’s relying alot of wordpress’s system to handle moderation, which is just a mess. Once I get the full moderation tools in, I’m hoping it’ll be alot simpler and smoother to just take out the specific comments instead of trying to clear out a thread.

Personally, I’d love to see some cross-platform play options for the few multiplayer games I enjoy like Overwatch so that I can finally play a few rounds with my cousin (who plays on console while I play on PC).

Hey everyone! I’ve got auto-moderation kinda working a little overdrive until we get the site changes going, including some fixes to the comment system. Mainly if a really popular article hits right now, I may not be able to check through here as easily/quickly as needed, so I have it flagging certain words and terms (It’s gone a little crazy on me, as sometimes I can’t even find any of the offending words in the comments). So most of you shouldn’t have any worries. If you don’t see your comment right away, it likely just got grabbed and held in… Read more »

Have to be the one person that will voice their opinion against any kind of automatic flagging/censorship system. While toxic behavior isn’t worth salvaging I feel arbitrarily banning words is just simply a bad idea no matter how hateful their origins are.

justintimeforsupper
Admin

All comments will go by me or Jim before going into the trash, but some words are just not going to be tolerated. The automation means it will help me catch them easier, but it does not mean every comment caught will be deleted; it just means we’re going to personally approve whether it is what Jim is ok with being on his website.

If you are concerned something you wrote will be deleted, you’re not the kind of poster who should be concerned, basically.

YoDude

I’ll be this guy. I don’t think it’s a great idea. Honestly. Automatic flagging is bad. All censorship is bad. Even (imo especially) if it includes something you dislike.

All opinions should be heard.

And frankly I know my opinion is just one and I understand that it’s for the best to keep the in grates from trolling normal people, but it’s not a good idea in my mind.

Chris Schwartz-Brown

Moderation isn’t censorship. Having basic rules on a private site is something more places should do. That attitude is what has rendered Twitter and Reddit into toxic cesspools of white supremacy and misogyny where the worst and most abusive can drive off anyone else by sheer volume of shit.

Frankly I’m happy to know they’re doing this here, good on Jim and good on Justin. We don’t need more places where the worst of “gamer culture” can fester.

This is a cultural misunderstanding. In Canada the expectation is that EVERYBODY (private organization or not) must uphold each others charter rights. Including things like free speech. BUT also, in Canada we have a legally defined definition of “hate propaganda” which is: “any writing, sign or visible representation that advocates or promotes genocide or the communication of which by any person would constitute an offence under section 319” And in Canada our definition of free speech in general is much more narrow than in the US or even UK. So kind of balances out. But there is a lot of… Read more »

The sad thing is that Jim has some hate-fans who would just write that Jim “wears the horns” over and over. I agree that all ideas should be discussed, but people running in to yell something annoying really isn’t an instance of that.

I agree somewhat… with her sentiment at least.
But at the End of the day it’s Jim’s site and his brand and I fully support his right to do what he wants with his property.

However,
I suggest posting on the site in an obvious place some kind of guideline regarding which things are allowed and not allowed.

That way there is no confusion or possibility that elderly gay men like myself (who frequently reclaim certain words) don’t make any mistakes.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

Nick, I do not agree with that sentiment at all. (Not talking about the site for a second Jim can do whatever he wants with his property) but no one has the right to free from offensive words. Hate propaganda in Canada is defined as: “any writing, sign or visible representation that advocates or promotes genocide or the communication of which by any person would constitute an offence under section 319” Words like “F****T” are not hate speech on their own…in my personal opinion. Also, be very careful saying things like “People like you”(…the implication being that he is White)… Read more »

Cross platform play is bad for console makers but good for developers and consumers.

Austin_SJ
Guest

I actually think there is a really simple reason why Sony is doing this. When choosing which console to purchase a game on the size of the player base and being able to play with your friends is potentially an influencing factor. As Sony are ahead in install base, cross platform play actually removes one of their influence factors. Both Microsoft and Nintendo want to be able to say, yes PS4 has more players but you can’t still play with them on our consoles.

Austin_SJ

I should point out this doesn’t benefit consumers at all, it’s a purely selfish decision.

Graham Miller

While it is an anti-consumer move, I don’t know why you haven’t recognized yet that there are plenty of business reasons for Sony not playing ball. Because they are so far ahead in player-base, remaining walled off forces players to get a PS4 if they want to play with the largest group of people on console. If they open up crossplay, they make it easier for people to choose to get another console. This works the opposite for Microsoft, because opening crossplay makes it easier for people to choose the Xbox since they’ll still be able to play with their… Read more »

I think we’re talking about very minimal potential slicing of these bases, since the matter only affects certain games and certain people. The problem is that it becomes a story for everyone; what *if* a future game makes me want to use crossplay but I can’t? But the argument goes another way, too. If you’re an obsessive Rocket League player, for example, crossplay isn’t just about standard play but forming parties/teams. Being the biggest platform wouldn’t help there – everyone has their preferred system and they’re not budging much, with each system having very high representation to this day. And… Read more »

I can’t see this becoming an issue, until some of that stuff that people actually double dip on, to play with their friends, start adopting Cross-Platform Play. Like, those weirdos that buy multiple copies of Call of Duty, because their poor friends don’t own the same consoles, and stuff like that. And even then, I don’t know, mange. Also, Minecraft, only has Cross-Platform Play with the Windows 10 version, which is an inferior version of the game that is less complete, runs worse, and has payed Skin Packs that aren’t anything you couldn’t do with Mods. Fuck that version. You… Read more »

Gotta admit I am kinda disappointed by the comments and responses. I respect Jim’s opinion, though I disagree here, but again the fanboyism that exists in gaming is just disappointing. We are all gamers and should not hate so much. I think Sony made a good call here, and anyone who thinks MS would not have done the EXACT SAME THING (if they had the same market-dominating position as Sony does) is kidding themselves. It just takes a little open-minded thought to work it out, and I very much don’t see why Jim decided to make an episode about this.… Read more »

Its a good business move in the short term for the reasons you gave.
The thing is that resting on your laurels because you’re in the lead is a bad idea. And something we have seen before, which (I think in part) is why this was a topic worth covering.

Nobody’s calling Sony a villain, its just another example of every other competitor in the market striving to be better than the market leader while the leader thinks they are untouchable and need not change.

Hi Jim. Love your videos and I’d like to know your opinions on the other side of a similar scenario which is Final Fantasy 14. The game’s director has publicly expressed interest in having cross-platform play between consoles to release his game as a multiplatform game. But the thing is it is currently only released on Sony’s console and PC. Wouldn’t it be a bad decision for Sony to have cross-platform play because Sony would lose console exclusivity on its own game?

drownedsummer

FF14 is a Square-Enix game. As far as I’m aware it was mostly console exclusive due to Microsoft’s patching policy at the time and features cross platform play between those two userbases as it requires connecting to PlayOnline.

InfamousDS

InfamousDS
PlayOnline was FF11, FF14 uses “The Lodestone” and “Mog Station” as their account management and log-in systems. You are correct though. MS wanted all in-game patches to be approved in advance and not distributed through the Square-Enix network infrastructure. There was also no waiver for the patch fees that MS was charging at the time, despite the success of Cross-Platform FF11 which had done (and still was doing at the time) quite literally the exact same things SE wanted for FF14. And to top it off, there was no planned exclusion from Xbox Live which meant players needed to pay… Read more »

I don’t get the reference, but I also quit the game 2 years ago and only just restarted with the expansion. I also don’t follow the game on social media, so I won’t catch references to YouTube or the like.

That’s fine, I’ve been dragged kicking and screaming into Stormblood, Diablo 3: Eternal on PS4, and a proxy war with my agoraphobic brother’s best friend who insists he gets every game with multiplayer on the X1 (of which I am the primary financier). I think some technical aspects are being ignored here. I’m not an expert by any means, nor am I agreeing with Sony, but if you want to allow interplay between different consoles, then you need to assure that you are maintaining a clean, bug, abuse and cheating free experience between users, and that isn’t something you can control on your own anymore. Consoles are walled gardens, completely controlled by the companies that run them. They reserve the right to kick players off or force developers to follow certain rules. There are obvious reasons Sony would like to completely control this… Read more »

I am a long time fan, but Jim’s points seem to have been slowly degrading in rationality for a while now. If I’m being honest, its VERY hard to say from a business AND non-business standpoint if Sony is making the right move. I’m under the impression that the Xbox community is infinitely crappier than Nintendo and Sony’s communities? I’m basing that off of my experiences with Xbox 360’s online community, and people complaining about their online community on forums. I have not EVER played any Sony console after PS1. The rationality was presented in the video; “In a world where tearing down the walls separating gamers arbitrarily by platform seems to be the trend…” Do you know how voice chat works on the Switch? Just to even activate it you have to have a proprietary dongle that splits into a mic and headphone jack – or so the hearsay regarding the announcement has led me to believe. The Switch otherwise doesn’t enable voice chat at all. The external communities can be as toxic as they want and nobody on the Switch will hear it w/o that. Also worth mentioning… Read more »

Microsoft fucked up 4 years ago. Fucked up royally. But if you’re still judging the Xbox brand from 4 years ago, then you’re the one who is uninformed. They did a major restructuring in the Xbox department at MS, moving and firing a lot of people. They undid every unpopular feature of the original XOne reveal. They are constantly adding new features to the service, and have probably the fastest, most secure and robust online service among the consoles (PC gaming still reigns). And unlike Sony, who slapped together a mostestly more powerful box and called it Pro, the One… Read more »

On theory I’ve had is that Sony’s online system just isn’t robust enough to handle it at this time. Reporting trolls, griefers, or harassers is impossible unless they directly message you….but if they do it throughout the course of a 20 minute game they get away with it. PSN looks nice but accessing information is rather slow and doesn’t get updated nearly as fast as the Xbox One. The store has frequent payment/downloading issues (at least for me). They don’t even have the system infrastructure to handle changing your PSN ID whereas you can on Xbox Live. I think they… Read more »

Jim said something bad about Sony and nice about Microsoft, so they saw it as an opportunity to bash Sony repeatedly for barely related or unrelated things.

He thinks that if he just hurls enough insults around that people will be intimidated into not asking him these questions. He also seems genuinely incapable of holding a conversation at any level without thinking of it as an intensely personal argument. So ‘I disagree’ or ‘why are you doing this?’ can only be met with juvenile insults, profanity and then nonsequiters to try to quickly change the subject.
