The Jimquisition: Paul Ryan (Not That One)

I’m sorry if you’re tired of hearing about Brash Games or its owner, Paul Ryan (Not That One).

Unfortunately, those who were recently part of his libelous, treacherous, potentially illegal manifesto don’t have a choice.

And now the Cleaner Is Come.

I don’t know if Brash Games is a corrupt corporation that needs to be taken to task or some asshole working out of his garage who needs to be taken to task. I do know that I have less reason to watch your videos, observe your website ads, or donate to your Patreon, the more time you waste revenging incompetent hacks. I understand the ‘big picture’ argument you made defending your decision to “review” god-awful indie games on Steam Greenlight: You want Steam to up its quality-control game by drawing attention to its terrible content. As boring as those videos… Read more »

Are you serious? What you say is true and correct but it’s like you’ve only read or seen half of Jim’ content. When him isn’t attacking tiny no boddies or as in the case of some being attacked by tiny no buddies who are making his day work difficult and so need to be dealth with, him does go after big names like steam or konami or Ubisoft or…well.anyone…nintendo…sony…you name it jim has a pop if he feels injustice. Yes sometime he takes it too personally and maybe even wastes our time but seriously your claim that the only thing… Read more »

I know he has done better work–work that is more interesting to watch AND in a consumer advocacy role that actually makes a difference. That’s why I check in here from time to time, wishing he would do more of that and less of the other shit.

The tenfold traffic increase is simple really. Brash games went from internet nobody most never heard of too slightly notorious site run by a corrupt D-bag. So ofcourse they get a lot of attention suddenly around the time opencritic shut them off. Paul Ryan (not that one) seems to delude himself into believing it is because of the delisting that traffic increased in order to strengthen his anti-aggregator belief while refusing the obvious reality that the traffic increased cause plenty of people wanted to see the troll’s den themselves. Even i looked it up just to make sure this insane… Read more »

The original statement’s been deleted (as you reported on twitter) and replaced with another ‘brief apology’ which limits itself to roughly the first paragraph of the original statement. How long until Paul Ryan – not that one – amends that one to be cruel and incoherent too?

“‘as soon as they took us off [opencritic] traffic increased tenfold’ I don’t know how that works”
Jim, when opencritic removed them was when the scandal broke ( or at least the opencritic dump), of course the traffic increased when a no name website became the scandal de jour.

Fucking wow. That little snake. How low can you sink to wield someone’s illness as a weapon? If they had had cancer, he probably would have been telling everyone that they were always off having chemo and that messed with his timetable. What a cheap, trashy little snake. Shame on you, Paul Ryan (not that one).

Undoubtedly. He’d also bitch if she were pregnant and going to doctor’s appointments, or missed deadlines for a sick child. People like this don’t understand how repugnant it is to weaponize these types of private issues (be they medical or familial) against employees. But there’s something especially sinister about bringing up mental illness, because there’s always the undertone of ‘don’t listen to this person, he/she is *crazy*’ that just borders on gaslighting. Like, he’s trying to make everyone – including the writers themselves – doubt what they are saying about what happened with Brash. Fuck this guy. (edited to fix… Read more »

Maybe Paul Ryan (Not That One) is Paul Ryan from an alternate dimension where he became a shitty games ‘journalist’ instead of a shitty politician. It would explain everything!

For someone who’s been online for sixteen years he seems to demonstrate a stunning amount of ignorance for how easy it is to fact check things now. My “favorite” part of this whole mess is how he keeps making up quotes out of thin air thinking that people are stupid enough to just completely swallow it. That supposed evil quote from Ben McCurry was amazing. I mean…where the hell was that even supposed to have come from? The way it’s written suggests that it’s not directed towards Paul Ryan Not That One and more like McCurry is gloating about this… Read more »

This is what you can find if you go to Brash Games right now… I don’t know what this is. I don’t know what he is. I don’t think anyone knows what he is.

I’m suspecting he removed it after realising he had provided multiple valid ground for libel.

And as has been pointed out elsewhere under UK law a volunteer still counts as a normal employee and is fully protected by standard worker’s rights.

Can we call him Paulson? See, I used to know a Paul, but he was an immature adult with no grasp of tact and the legal ramifications of his decisions were beyond him. And I’d rather not get them confused.

So Jim, can we expect written reviews from the former unpaid employee’s of Brash Games to show up here for a proper compensation?

I mean… Surely I’m not the only one who enjoys the occasional review from Laura and that wonderful review that started this whole debacle?

You could form a whole review band! Jim and the Quisitioneers!

Chip could be the roadie you blame for all misfortune.

And Conrad Zimmerman could be the main Antagonist after you’ve dealt with Weskers aspirations to be the number one Boglin Boy.

Consider it, Jim. The movie and brand deals basically write themselves!

He’s too cowardly to even stand by his cowardice.

You can also find it on Tired Old Hack’s site whose own deconstruction of Paul’s statements is well worth reading. I think Ryan meant said volunteers also writing in volunteer capacity for other gaming sites. I’ve read his statement and there isn’t any point where he states any of these writers were under an exclusivity contract. None of them were prevented from writing for other outlets and if you’re entirely doing this for exposure you would write for as many as possible really. Ryan has since deleted his statement. I’m guessing because he realised he was providing more and more… Read more »

“They are not prepared to put in a decent shift, they think playing a game for a couple of hours and knocking up a 400 word review while smoking pop is acceptable, they don’t even throw how to spell check. What is the world coming too.”

Is this for real? Did he actually write this? Because that needs to be printed out, framed and hung on the front of Jim’s podium forever.

From what I gathered google cache had an early version of his post which is what I read. This isn’t what Jim’s version was as his had far less grammar and spelling errors with other additions and retractions.

That was exactly how I found it.

This is the only Jimquisition I stopped watching half way through.

I love your work Jim and this issue obviously has significance for you as it involves the industry you work in, but I just see it as the kind of workplace exploitation that happens everyday in pretty much every line of work.

I guess this one is just not for me.

Dragongelf

I’d love to see an actual business pay their employee’s in “exposure” instead of dollars when they are working at a cash register/waiting tables/coding websites/making business deals/(insert whatever day to day profession here)

No really, my boss is an absolute dirtbag of a boss, as I imagine many bosses are, but not even he is quite that bad where he would deny actual money for services rendered.

Workplace exploitation is one thing but this is just a whole new level of shit.

It shouldn’t be normalised. Complacency leads to vast problems when others know they can get away with taking advantage of others. Our current state of affairs is precisely down to not enough people caring or believing they have the power to change things.
