The Jimquisition: Pokemon Go, The Best Worst Pokemon Game Ever

Pokemon Go is a mundane game and a poorly made, unfinished app. It may very well be the best Pokemon game ever made, too.

Kind of. Sort of. A bit.

Either way, I can’t get over my fascination with the thing’s bizarre creative success.

what is the game from the space shooter footage used in this Jimquisition? the one in the spaceship cockpit, not the COD footage.

Congrats to the 100th episode milestone, I can’t see a reason why you can’t have another 100. Just think of the early days, the fear, the cold sweats and the trepidation, but your hard work and effort has really paid off in terms of growing ability and production. People think creating a video is easy because people at your level make it look easy. It’s not. Personally I wish you would do more live streams, more opportunity for your fans to interact with your good self and more positive game spotlights. That said, never stop calling out the BS cash… Read more »

They really need to fix the app so that we can hatch eggs while running around at work or going on a walk without having my phone out with the app running constantly.

3:09 – Jim Sterling, my good sir, I do believe you have just summed up 90% of all mobile games ever created ever.

Congrats on hitting triple digits! I can’t believe it’s been right about 2 years since going independent already… It’s completely taken me by surprise…this stupid little phone game has brought people together in ways I didn’t think were still possible with how screwed up the world is. I’ve come home to people parked under the ‘Permit only’ sign right next to my house, blinkers on, apologizing that there’s a pokémon standing right behind my car, they hope it’s not a problem that they’re parked there to catch it. People of all ages and backgrounds mill around the park less than… Read more »

Well, the difference between the app and the actual games, in terms of people just “whipping it out” is that, well, the app is an app. It’s a small thing on a phone, a device that almost everyone has. In comparison, over the years, if you wanted to play Pokemon with someone, you had to have your Game Boy/DS with you, you had to have your cart/card with you (I’m shocked at the number of people I know who play Pokemon today who still buy the physical medium), you had to have compatible versions, you have to set up a… Read more »

It’s almost as if a meteor hit the earth and these very pocket monsters now populate it alongside us. (along with the technology to interact with them, kind of Macross-style.) I think some real research could be done as far as how people would react to this scenario happening, say, in real life. While most have welcomed their presence, some have been outright hostile towards them. Factions have formed over who is the better keeper of these creatures, and there are some who think they should all be destroyed, passing off those who have taken it upon themselves to capture… Read more »

I don’t give a fuck for Pokemon. That said, I applaud and support the success ‘Pokemon Go’ is having. As it proves, more often, it’s the “simplistic”, “casual”, “stripped down” games that succeeds in welcoming the wider audience. I’d enjoy typing up samples but I realized it has taken two paragraphs for me just to cover how we’ve(as a market) gone about in strategy games alone. With earlier works really moving towards various game objectives and political simulation/facets, then RTS came with simpler objectives and generalized factions. To MOBA’s, combining elements between ARPG and RTS, which pinpointed it’s focus to… Read more »

Well, if it’s supposed to be Christmas in July, then I should probably give one of the classic carols a revision with Jim Sterling-themed lyrics:

Thank God for this fat gentleman
Who labors every day
‘Cause he’s Jim Fucking Sterling, son
‘Twas born in the U.K.
To save us all from Konami
Which had long gone astray
O tidings of boglins and pogs
Boglins and pogs
O tidings of boglins and pogs

I agree so much with this. The app is constantly freezing and has like the bare minimum of game play, but it is really fun to go out on a Pokemon hunt. I’ve been hunting for pokemon at lunch, walking more and chatting with people about it. The delight of catching a rare pokemon or one you don’t have is great and the community around it is mostly great. I was walking down one of the streets in Dublin on Saturday, there are like 5 pubs on it that are pokestops, and there were tons of people sitting in the… Read more »

I won’t play this game until they add Umbreon (or the game is available in Canada, whatever happens first).

Pokemon Go is just another piece of evidence in the pile that the success of mobile games has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself. Brand, fads, and addictive design are really the only things that matter, and even then it’s seemingly random which one succeeds and which one fails.

Official pogs were crap, you had to get the unauthorized stuff, they all had random pictures on them like animals and stuff.

I don’t understand the hate people have for the players. The game itself from a technical aspect, sure I get that hate. It’s a mess, and the servers suck, and the permissions “flaw” with Google account access is total horseshit. But people need to stop hating on the Pokemon Go players themselves. One of my coworkers was fucking EGGED for playing the game, for crying out loud. Let people enjoy their games and — long as they’re not rear-ending you in because they were too busy trying to catch a Vaporean — stop hating on them

I WOULD play it, but apparently it’s not “compatible” with my phone. That is some serious bullshit.

But bizarre compatibility issues aside, I’m really glad GO is a thing. Even if it’s not a good game, even if it’s a half-baked, buggy app, the impact it’s had is so clearly, obviously positive that it’s made it *very* easy to identify the shitheads for easy avoidance.

Which makes it the second thing in the recent past to do that. The first was… not positive.

As someone who has a history of mental issues, anxiety attacks, being beaten up and social anxiety, I can say these types of games do not help me. All they do for me is cause my paranoia to increase because I worry about being judged, or bullied, or robbed or anything like that. Which makes me disgusted when I see some Pokemon Go players using how it has helped some people with mental health issues as a weapon against people don’t like the game. To those people, f*** off. Nothing should be considered a quick fix, one thing won’t be… Read more »

It’s amazing how little effort you have to put in when your audience has had “gotta catch ’em all” drilled into them over the past 2 decades.
