The Jimquisition: Pokemon Go, The Best Worst Pokemon Game Ever

Pokemon Go is a mundane game and a poorly made, unfinished app. It may very well be the best Pokemon game ever made, too.

Kind of. Sort of. A bit.

Either way, I can’t get over my fascination with the thing’s bizarre creative success.

what is the game from the space shooter footage used in this Jimquisition? the one in the spaceship cockpit, not the COD footage.

Congrats to the 100th episode milestone, I can’t see a reason why you can’t have another 100. Just think of the early days, the fear, the cold sweats and the trepidation, but your hard work and effort has really paid off in terms of growing ability and production. People think creating a video is easy because people at your level make it look easy. It’s not. Personally I wish you would do more live streams, more opportunity for your fans to interact with your good self and more positive game spotlights. That said, never stop calling out the BS cash… Read more »

Fuck yeah. I’m a skint peasant who contributes absolutely bugger all to The Jimquisition but I’d just want to say you make Mondays better, Jim.

I’m proud you’re from the UK and know what it is to be in Yarmouth.

I’m happy that better people than me fund this shit so I can have 10 minutes of laughing and not reflecting on how I’m trapped in a terrible job.

I’m just fucking glad you do this shit.

Keep it the fuck up, mate.

They really need to fix the app so that we can hatch eggs while running around at work or going on a walk without having my phone out with the app running constantly.

Hopefully this is fixed by the time the watch launches. Why the hell would you need a watch to catch them when you need your phone active anyway?

The ingame Battery saver mode setting turns the phone dim and keeps the data going without extra visual strain. You flip your iphone upside down with it on.

Or… if you have android, you wonder wtf it’s doing to “save battery.” They really need an online game manual or something…

Yea, the android version is kind of wonky.

Congrats on hitting triple digits! I can’t believe it’s been right about 2 years since going independent already… It’s completely taken me by surprise…this stupid little phone game has brought people together in ways I didn’t think were still possible with how screwed up the world is. I’ve come home to people parked under the ‘Permit only’ sign right next to my house, blinkers on, apologizing that there’s a pokémon standing right behind my car, they hope it’s not a problem that they’re parked there to catch it. People of all ages and backgrounds mill around the park less than… Read more »

It’ll burn out a lot faster than that if there isn’t more actual content and fixes added to the game.
The only thing that brings people together faster than a fad is a movement to make a mass exodus from said fad once it falls from grace.

Well, the difference between the app and the actual games, in terms of people just “whipping it out” is that, well, the app is an app. It’s a small thing on a phone, a device that almost everyone has. In comparison, over the years, if you wanted to play Pokemon with someone, you had to have your Game Boy/DS with you, you had to have your cart/card with you (I’m shocked at the number of people I know who play Pokemon today who still buy the physical medium), you had to have compatible versions, you have to set up a… Read more »

It’s almost as if a meteor hit the earth and these very pocket monsters now populate it alongside us. (along with the technology to interact with them, kind of Macross-style.) I think some real research could be done as far as how people would react to this scenario happening, say, in real life. While most have welcomed their presence, some have been outright hostile towards them. Factions have formed over who is the better keeper of these creatures, and there are some who think they should all be destroyed, passing off those who have taken it upon themselves to capture… Read more »

I don’t give a fuck for Pokemon. That said, I applaud and support the success ‘Pokemon Go’ is having. As it proves, more often, it’s the “simplistic”, “casual”, “stripped down” games that succeeds in welcoming the wider audience. I’d enjoy typing up samples but I realized it has taken two paragraphs for me just to cover how we’ve(as a market) gone about in strategy games alone. With earlier works really moving towards various game objectives and political simulation/facets, then RTS came with simpler objectives and generalized factions. To MOBA’s, combining elements between ARPG and RTS, which pinpointed it’s focus to… Read more »

Well, if it’s supposed to be Christmas in July, then I should probably give one of the classic carols a revision with Jim Sterling-themed lyrics:

Thank God for this fat gentleman
Who labors every day
‘Cause he’s Jim Fucking Sterling, son
‘Twas born in the U.K.
To save us all from Konami
Which had long gone astray
O tidings of boglins and pogs
Boglins and pogs

“All” rolls off the tongue better in general [like ‘all ages’ rather than ‘both young and old’], but with where Jim stands on the relevant social conversations, I get the feeling he used it intentionally, not for simple auditory elegance. It’s gotten really complicated as our (as a species) understanding of the human brain gets better. What used to be considered mental illness [brain/body mismatch] is transitioning towards being considered normal, not unlike how sexuality/body mismatches [in the biological sense…homosexuality, bisexuality, asexuality] have normalized. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that as science’s understanding gets better, the ability to take… Read more »

Gender is a very specific term that is not limited by whether you’re XX or XY. Depending on the society/culture, there can be many genders.

kimiyoribaka
Guest

I’m not an expert, but I think your “Sex” category is missing possibilities. XX and XY are the by far most common, and many of the variations lead to essentially the same (ie. XXY is just XY with a different growth order during adolescence and potentially a different hormone balance). However, cases with incomplete chromosomes (usually distinguished as XO) can result in incompatible individual parts in the pelvic area, or even result in fully male gonads with the person developing breasts later. Personally, I prefer to just not think about that part of people unless I have to, since gender… Read more »

I agree so much with this. The app is constantly freezing and has like the bare minimum of game play, but it is really fun to go out on a Pokemon hunt. I’ve been hunting for pokemon at lunch, walking more and chatting with people about it. The delight of catching a rare pokemon or one you don’t have is great and the community around it is mostly great. I was walking down one of the streets in Dublin on Saturday, there are like 5 pubs on it that are pokestops, and there were tons of people sitting in the… Read more »

Pokemon Go is just another piece of evidence in the pile that the success of mobile games has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself. Brand, fads, and addictive design are really the only things that matter, and even then it’s seemingly random which one succeeds and which one fails.

Reviews and/or word of mouth save or can condemn console games. They pretty much do nothing to mobile games.

I’m trying not to be that guy who goes on a nonsensical tirade ending with a challenge to prove your point or else you’re wrong. However, how successful were the next most similar games without Pokemon’s branding? I mean I think Ingress lacked Go’s success, in part, because my introduction into the game stated that I had to be at a physical location to ‘hack’ something, on my smartphone. Go instead presents that to capture physical creatures I have to find them, to pick up goods I have to go to a place (or pay to have them shipped to… Read more »

I don’t understand the hate people have for the players. The game itself from a technical aspect, sure I get that hate. It’s a mess, and the servers suck, and the permissions “flaw” with Google account access is total horseshit. But people need to stop hating on the Pokemon Go players themselves. One of my coworkers was fucking EGGED for playing the game, for crying out loud. Let people enjoy their games and — long as they’re not rear-ending you in because they were too busy trying to catch a Vaporean — stop hating on them

I WOULD play it, but apparently it’s not “compatible” with my phone. That is some serious bullshit.

But bizarre compatibility issues aside, I’m really glad GO is a thing. Even if it’s not a good game, even if it’s a half-baked, buggy app, the impact it’s had is so clearly, obviously positive that it’s made it *very* easy to identify the shitheads for easy avoidance.

Which makes it the second thing in the recent past to do that. The first was… not positive.

This is the part where I do the slow clap, and remind people that the Democrats were dumb enough to run Hillary Clinton again, someone with 30 years of some of the worst political and legal baggage I’ve even seen in my lifetime, and who already failed miserably once. Anyone who supports her is an idiot. Oh, what, want to argue my blanket statement? Too bad. Here’s another blanket statement. After this Sunday? I assume you mean Sun & Moon, and I wouldn’t know. I’d hazard a guess that the game will run on a standard 3DS, with features only a N3DS can take advantage of. If that’s the case, I *really* hope we don’t see a repeat of Hyrule Warriors Legends. But on the subject of the 3DS, Pokemon GO does show the sort of thing having a data option is useful for in a handheld. It is literally the exact kind of game Nintendo’s been teasing with the AR stuff, and it kind of stings that it’s NOT on the platform… Read more »

As someone who has a history of mental issues, anxiety attacks, being beaten up and social anxiety, I can say these types of games do not help me. All they do for me is cause my paranoia to increase because I worry about being judged, or bullied, or robbed or anything like that. Which makes me disgusted when I see some Pokemon Go players using how it has helped some people with mental health issues as a weapon against people don’t like the game. To those people, f*** off.
