The Jimquisition: Prey‘s Demo & Arkane’s Cock Cigarette

Demos aren’t exactly fashionable, and Prey not having one on PC is technically a non-issue.

Or it would have been, had Arkane’s reasoning not been so thoroughly and astoundingly wrong. At least when you think about it more than Arkane has.

Stupidest reason ever to not put upp a demo for potential buyers.

You are absolutely correct. The moment I heard the dev’s comment, I just shrugged it off then a moment later my brain was like “Wait a minute…!?” It just feels like they are scapegoating to shrug off more work, or any valid reason as to not offer a demo for PC user. As for Brazzers, yea they do offer a trial… but signing up for the trial also automatically signs you up for a $30 recurring subscriptions which is a pain in the ass to cancel, and I’ve had to help a couple people cancer their subscription to. It’s as… Read more »

It’s a strange announcement from Arkane, given that Dishonored 2’s first hours are available as a demo… on Steam. If it’s not necessary, why do it for D2?

About the whole speedrun thing, you pretty much have to abuse glitches and use mods to get through the game that quickly, if you try and play normally there’s no way you’re beating it that fast.

Half disappointed, half relived my comments arguing that there should exist some (not all) games that have no easy mode.

See, Jim plays this argument on easy mode, quoting the guys who use terms like “filthy casual” for easy points and laughs. Me, I play this argument on fucking hardcore, taking on the big man himself in his own comment section and batting away his armies of sycophants with my pro level rhetoric.

THAT IS HARDCORE ARGUING.

It’s really frustrating in such a predictable way that Arkane trotted out the “didn’t have enough resources” cock cigarette. Which is instantly laughable when you realize this is the company that made the Dishonored Franchise and they’re backed by a company that publishes Fallout and Elder Scrolls. You guys get “resources” just from the merchandise you sell. =/ Also I LOVE Duke. I can’t believe it took this long for you to make something like this. It kinda reminds me of your very early days when you were still on Destructoid and you’d be the snobby game critic who looks… Read more »

When something doesn’t give me a demo, all I can wonder is what they don’t want me to see, and it starts killing my interest immediately. The new DOOM and Resident Evil 7 both had demos that completely turned my expectations around and got me more invested in the games than I thought I ever could be. It’s almost like letting me find out you made a good game makes me want to spend money on it. Also, locking the demo behind the pre-order is what kept me from jumping on board Yooka Laylee before release. Guess I should thank… Read more »

Edit: oops that one got through. Edit: the sequel (nobody asked for): okay, real comment time! Some publishers do appear to have a fear of putting demos on PC, I wonder though, is it partly from the fear of hackers ‘unlocking’ the game without paying? The PC platform is a place they do not have tight control of when it comes to various evil pirate tricks and I can totally see a few CEOs shitting bricks at the thought of losing precious sales in such a manner. – Also, with that guy’s comment about steam refund policy, I honestly don’t… Read more »

Duke Amiel Du H’ardcore is quite horrifying. But in such a delicious and hilarious way. I concur, let the casuals eat cake!

Also, considering that those comments were real, I would hate to be that guys kid playing Star Fox Zero. What an ass his/her dad is…

I wasn’t massively convinced by your argument but then I remembered my mum is still probably paying for my club penguin membership.

Also, I’m going to guess that’s something Bethesda requested and Arkane Studios are the ones that got saddled with being the herald of bad news. Giving Bethesda’s past actions like the new review policy and the whole, “lets base who get bonuses on metacritic scores”, It sounds like something they’d do.

My favorite part of people complaining about Millennials is that there’s about a 98% chance that the person complaining about them a) doesn’t know or understand what a generational cohort is and b) are themselves (or, lets be real, himself) a Millennial.

PSA: If you are an American who was born between between about 1980 and 1996, (depending on who you ask (the US state department never got around to deciding a end date so they think anyone born after ’81 is a Millennial)), you are a Millennial.

I know I am week late in saying this but its something I only wondered days later after watching the video again and YouTube recommending me to watch “10 More Games That Mock You For Playing On Easy Mode”. Like, some developers encourage the hateful and toxic attitudes that you brought up last week’s episode by treating easier modes and stuff to help players as things to be ashamed at, laughed at or make people feel better for not using them. Like how do we stop that?

Again, sorry for a week late on that.

I have to say, i’m surprised JIm did an entire episode on this, I thought for sure he would’ve railed on Square Enix for dumping I/O Interactive(After SE were the ones who fucked up Hitman with their awful business model and godawful DRM) Personally I think it was Bethesda’s call to not send out demos to the PC, this has their dirty fingerprints all over it. Also having just finished Prey last night(after a marathon 12 hour gaming session) I have to say I honestly think it’s better then either of the System Shock games(both of which I feel have… Read more »

Back in my youth, all we had was our skills, selectable difficulty modes, built-in cheat codes and Game Genies, nothing at all like today.

Not sure if it’s Jim’s mic or YouTube that can’t handle Duke Amiel Du H’ardcore’s awesomeness.

That argument makes even less sense when you think about what demos were back before the games industry gave up on them. They used to be set later on in the game when you had all the cool things unlocked so you could try them out and get a little taste of the game at it’s best which means that if you buy the game and it’s not brilliant to begin with you at least know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Arkane’s argument seems to be ‘try the game for an hour or 2 while it’s… Read more »

Unless your standard demos become unplayable after 2 hours, then no, the reality is in no way comparable.

The lack of comments disturbs me…

New bit at the end made me laugh, even though I did make some arguments myself against taking easier modes too far. If you do this again in the future, consider parodying one of the longer comments (I’d volunteer)? While just utilizing the worst of the worst works fine, and picking on one person’s more involved comment might seem mean, I think it’d be pretty funny for a “noble” type character to go on a longer screed
