The Jimquisition: Prey‘s Demo & Arkane’s Cock Cigarette

Demos aren’t exactly fashionable, and Prey not having one on PC is technically a non-issue.

Or it would have been, had Arkane’s reasoning not been so thoroughly and astoundingly wrong. At least when you think about it more than Arkane has.

You are absolutely correct. The moment I heard the dev’s comment, I just shrugged it off then a moment later my brain was like “Wait a minute…!?” It just feels like they are scapegoating to shrug off more work, or any valid reason as to not offer a demo for PC user. As for Brazzers, yea they do offer a trial… but signing up for the trial also automatically signs you up for a $30 recurring subscriptions which is a pain in the ass to cancel, and I’ve had to help a couple people cancer their subscription to. It’s as… Read more »

It’s a strange announcement from Arkane, given that Dishonored 2’s first hours are available as a demo… on Steam. If it’s not necessary, why do it for D2?

About the whole speedrun thing, you pretty much have to abuse glitches and use mods to get through the game that quickly, if you try and play normally there’s no way you’re beating it that fast.

Today:
“Your argument is invalid because it requires glitches and breaking the game’s rules.”

“Glitches make the game more fun and there aren’t any rules to break, why do you have such a problem with it?”

Never said anything about breaking the games rules, not sure what you’re on about.

If people want to speedrun the game that’s their business, just saying it shouldn’t be a major concern of Jim’s since the vast majority of people aren’t going to be able to finish the game in under 2 hours, plus as someone else on here mentioned-speedruns like that often take multiple attempts to get right, so even if one did use glitches, it would still take several hours to be able to perfect a speedrun to get the game done quickly.

No, I said you were breaking the rules, and you scoffed at it as though I had accused you of stealing a candy bar. Scoffing means you thought my words were ludicrous, which is easy to extrapolate as you believing my argument had no merit and there were not any rules for the game aside from “have fun”. Also, I had an awesome Solitaire comparison that you didn’t get and called dumb. I don’t care about the rest, because it is an afterthought justification which doesn’t even read like the opinion you held in the original post. Moving the goalpost… Read more »

It’s hardly breaking the rules at all, especially considering if you never use the duplication trick, you won’t even come close to maxing out all of your tech trees. I’m someone who always wants to try and max out my tech trees in games so I couldn’t resist. Why does it offend you so much if people choose to use the duplication tactic? Are you someone that demands people play games exactly the same way that you do? It wasn’t an “awesome comparison”, it was an awesomely stupid one that made zero sense. There’s no “afterthought justification” or “moving the… Read more »

Yeah, you know how I kept saying you were missing the point of the game? Your response is all just an explanation as to how much you were missing the point of the game.

I’d go into detail and systematically refute every point you’ve made, but neither of us actually gives a shit. You won’t change and I don’t care.

Your response just shows how unbelievably ignorant you are, I did not “miss the point” of the game at all just cause I played it differently then you did?

Let me guess, are you one of those people who are anti-modding?

Why are so offended? because I didn’t play exactly like you did?

I could go into painstaking detail about exactly why your posts are so asinine, but i’m sure you’d never understand it.

Arkane: We are making a ‘Shock spiritual successor, where you have to carefully manage resources while exploring. Exploring is itself is locked behind this resource mechanic, and we have many alternate routes for players who want to play the game their own way. The Internet: We found a glitch for infinite resources. Here is how to do it. You: I’m playing MY WAY because I have to OCD the entire tech tree and there isn’t enough resources to do that in the game. So I duped enough of everything to make all the exploration mods, then played for a while… Read more »

Wow you are so fucking brain-dead its truly hilarious, you sound like Sean Spicer right now LOL

Who the fuck says a game HAS to be played exactly the way a developer says it should be?

By your logic you should HATE mods since they can make a game completely different from how a developer intended it.

I don’t think the devs will take very kindly to you telling other people how to play the game, it makes you look like a sad pathetic fucking loser.

Exploits are only bad in multiplayer games like World of Warcraft.

Half disappointed, half relived my comments arguing that there should exist some (not all) games that have no easy mode.

See, Jim plays this argument on easy mode, quoting the guys who use terms like “filthy casual” for easy points and laughs. Me, I play this argument on fucking hardcore, taking on the big man himself in his own comment section and batting away his armies of sycophants with my pro level rhetoric.

THAT IS HARDCORE ARGUING.

It’s really frustrating in such a predictable way that Arkane trotted out the “didn’t have enough resources” cock cigarette. Which is instantly laughable when you realize this is the company that made the Dishonored Franchise and they’re backed by a company that publishes Fallout and Elder Scrolls. You guys get “resources” just from the merchandise you sell. =/ Also I LOVE Duke. I can’t believe it took this long for you to make something like this. It kinda reminds me of your very early days when you were still on Destructoid and you’d be the snobby game critic who looks… Read more »

I don’t think this was Arkane talking, I think this was Bethesda talking through Arkane. These devs do not seem like anti-PC guys at all, and that statement sounds very Bethesda-esque in that it seems fine on the surface, but when you pick it apart you see how sinister it is. Much like the statement Bethesda made when they announced their new review policy “We want everyone to experience our games at the same time”, sounds fine on the surface, but when you give that statement scrutiny, you see how bullshit it really is, and this new statement sounds exactly… Read more »

And you’re basing this on…what? You have made this same comment multiple times in this thread, spamming it at anyone who mentions Arkane, but what are you actually basing this on? What has Arkane said that backs this up? Or are you just desperate to not admit that while you enjoy calling Nintendo fans cock sucking idiots for sticking up for one massive company who doesn’t care about them you do the exact same thing for studios and devs whose games you have liked? Because I’m going to guess that it’s that. And seriously, we get it. You don’t need… Read more »

I’m basing this on precedent, it sounds like a very Bethesda-esque statement, Arkane don’t have a track record of making statements like that, does not take a rocket scientist to see that something is amiss here. Are you just desperate to troll me because you’ve got nothing else going on in your life? Also never said all Nintendo were like that(just the hardcore fanboys), try again, maybe this time without flat-out lying about what I actually said(maybe I should start calling you Sean Spicer LOL). When something doesn’t give me a demo, all I can wonder is what they don’t want me to see, and it starts killing my interest immediately. The new DOOM and Resident Evil 7 both had demos that completely turned my expectations around and got me more invested in the games than I thought I ever could be. It’s almost like letting me find out you made a good game makes me want to spend money on it. Also, locking the demo behind the pre-order is what kept me from jumping on board Yooka Laylee before release. Guess I should thank… Read more »

I personally don’t play demos anymore, I just buy whatever looks interesting to me and 9 times out of 10 I end up enjoying it, but I get why demos are important to some people.

InfamousDS

To be fair to Yooka-Laylee, they didn’t actually have a real demo. It was a conceptual sandbox they had made for the KS backers which was just ported to console to save time.

I don’t regret my purchase, but I do regret believing in them. I feel like they only had the art guys, the music guys, and the writers from Old Rare while the programmers and level designers were stuck making Kinect titles and a sailing game ostensibly about pirates.

I think maybe it’s time we just accept that Rare aren’t as good as they used to be. Reminds me of how everyone wanted to believe that Frasier would get better in the final seasons once the original writers returned, but it still wasn’t as good as there was just no re-capturing what made the first few seasons so good. That’s also the case with Bungie, with Destiny I just had to accept that they were no longer as good as they once were(though admittedly I heard a lot of Bungie devs moved to 343), though hopefully Destiny 2 will… Read more »

Edit: oops that one got through. Edit: the sequel (nobody asked for): okay, real comment time! Some publishers do appear to have a fear of putting demos on PC, I wonder though, is it partly from the fear of hackers ‘unlocking’ the game without paying? The PC platform is a place they do not have tight control of when it comes to various evil pirate tricks and I can totally see a few CEOs shitting bricks at the thought of losing precious sales in such a manner. – Also, with that guy’s comment about steam refund policy, I honestly don’t… Read more »

Also, I’m going to guess that’s something Bethesda requested and Arkane Studios are the ones that got saddled with being the herald of bad news. Giving Bethesda’s past actions like the new review policy and the whole, “lets base who get bonuses on metacritic scores”, It sounds like something they’d do.

That’s always the way of these things. I remember plenty of times where Bungie got the flak for shit Destiny stuff like the dlc exclusive to redbull which was definitely Activision’s decision. And of course the dev can’t say ‘this wasn’t us it was those [♪SKELETON WARRIORS♫]’. It’s a crap situation to be in.

My favorite part of people complaining about Millennials is that there’s about a 98% chance that the person complaining about them a) doesn’t know or understand what a generational cohort is and b) are themselves (or, lets be real, himself) a Millennial.

PSA: If you are an American who was born between between about 1980 and 1996, (depending on who you ask (the US state department never got around to deciding a end date so they think anyone born after ’81 is a Millennial)), you are a Millennial.

I know I am week late in saying this but its something I only wondered days later after watching the video again and YouTube recommending me to watch “10 More Games That Mock You For Playing On Easy Mode”. Like, some developers encourage the hateful and toxic attitudes that you brought up last week’s episode by treating easier modes and stuff to help players as things to be ashamed at, laughed at or make people feel better for not using them. Like how do we stop that?

Again, sorry for a week late on that.

I have to say, i’m surprised JIm did an entire episode on this, I thought for sure he would’ve railed on Square Enix for dumping I/O Interactive(After SE were the ones who fucked up Hitman with their awful business model and godawful DRM) Personally I think it was Bethesda’s call to not send out demos to the PC, this has their dirty fingerprints all over it. That argument makes even less sense when you think about what demos were back before the games industry gave up on them. They used to be set later on in the game when you had all the cool things unlocked so you could try them out and get a little taste of the game at it’s best which means that if you buy the game and it’s not brilliant to begin with you at least know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Arkane’s argument seems to be ‘try the game for an hour or 2 while it’s… Read more »

The lack of comments disturbs me…

New bit at the end made me laugh, even though I did make some arguments myself against taking easier modes too far. If you do this again in the future, consider parodying one of the longer comments (I’d volunteer)? While just utilizing the worst of the worst works fine, and picking on one person’s more involved comment might seem mean, I think it’d be pretty funny for a “noble” type character to go on a longer screed
