The Jimquisition: Prey‘s Demo & Arkane’s Cock Cigarette

http://www.patreon.com/jimquisition

Demos aren’t exactly fashionable, and Prey not having one on PC is technically a non-issue.

Or it would have been, had Arkane’s reasoning not been so thoroughly and astoundingly wrong. At least when you think about it more than Arkane has.

Bonus Content: Elite Gaming Wisdom with Duke Amiel Du H’ardcore.

I loved the reading of comments. That’s the voice I hear when I read stupid gamer comments, or any comment on the daily mail website (it worth a laugh now and then to look at).

So then… Hastage jimfreedomporn?

Edit: Also. It wasn’t the wig. It wasn’t the makeup. It wasn’t the costume. What caught me off-guard was the fact that he wasn’t wearing eye wear. That was the weird part for me, not seeing him in some kind of glasses.

Chris

I do think the costume would be complete with a monocle.

You can’t monocle on a french rennaissance aristo – only germans and english aristos get to monocle.

Also he’d drop the bloody thing and smash it almost immediately.

What about those opera glasses?

Edit: They should be made of hard-ass plastic though, so then he can just hurl them onto the ground in frustration!

I was really hoping that on this, or on Podquisition, that you would comment on the Dan Stapleton score. He gave the game a 4 originally because of a bug that wouldn’t let him complete it, and people freaked out. I’d love to hear what you think of that.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the business model of Hatsune Miku Project Diva Future Tone on PS4. It does and doesn’t have a demo, in the sense that the “base game” is free but only includes two songs (so it’s effectively a demo, even if it technically isn’t), and the game proper is sold as DLC. It kind of reminds me of the 90s shareware wave (although shareware tended to be more generous with how much content it gave away for free, which might be why nobody uses that model any more). And I have to say I… Read more »

Fatal Frame: Lady of Black Water did the exact same thing. The free download included the first two chapters, and the rest was unlocked via purchase. and while I don’t know about all cases, I feel this particular instance provided more than enough to give players a good idea about whether or not they’ll like it. About the only thing it doesn’t give a good preview for is the story.

In any case, it’s certainly better than nothing because now I know I *really* don’t like Fatal Frame.

This is basically what Mario Run did isn’t it? So long as the game is up front about only being free for a short bit before you have to buy the whole thing this seems like a good system, but if like Nintendo the developers just spring it on you with no warning and, I could be misremembering it here but, no way to buy the full game from the start if you want to. Then this system can be, to some, at best annoying and at worst deceitful.

Allan Weallans

That’s a good point. As always, I don’t think deceiving customers is a good idea. On the other hand, with the Miku game, I didn’t even know it had a when-is-a-demo-not-a-demo before I was already considering buying it, which sort of defeats the point of a demo from a publisher’s perspective, I’d imagine.

I love that people in this thread are basically trying to find a word for “shareware”.

If I was of a terroristic bent, I’d barge into an EA or Ubisoft boardmeetings and give everyone a heart attack by suggesting that upto a third of a game be released entirely for free to build interest for it.

So I played the demo, supposedly the first hour of the game. My first playthrough was about 2 hours, explored all I could and made notes of where I was blocked off. Then I replayed going down a different talent tree to see what extra paths I missed. Then I did that again with the last tree, because I was still genuinely enjoying myself. Do you see the problem with relying on steam refunds? I was past the refund playtime limit before I even finished the demo. I hate having to rush through a game, being the completionist that I… Read more »

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy casual well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.

I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the hundred and twenty thousand casuals already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for livestock.

There are a number of additional points that I’m surprised didn’t get made in the video. 1) Most demos can be replayed infinitely, allowing players to keep coming back, maybe try some different gameplay styles if they want. Not so when you have a hard two hour time limit on your head. 2) A proper demo is a small self-contained chunk of game designed to help a player get a sense of most of what a game is about. The first two hours of a game won’t deliver the same experience as a carefully tailored scene.

As far as the comment at 8:32 about early sales numbers being useless, I think that’s exactly what Arkane is shooting for. A week after release, they’ll be able to call their game the “Best Selling Steam Game of 2017,” disregarding the bit where half the people wound up returning it once they realized it didn’t work/didn’t like it.

Well I agree that the bit at the end there was funny, it doesn’t change the fact that it IS technically wrong. He’s jokingly saying that the filthy casuals took away our games…but for those of us who actually prefer the difficulty of retro games…it kinda DID happen. Nintendo in particular has been a rather egregious offender in this regard. (Though Breath of the Wild is giving me hope they’re going to reverse this soon enough) The invincibility modes are irrelevant, its the fact that even WITHOUT those, the games are slower paced and less challenging. Don’t ANYBODY tell me… Read more »

Reminds me of some ‘hardcore’ gamers who to this day are still screaming about how just the very existence of an optional easy mode in Dark Souls would cheapen the experience for them, before sharing the latest cheese method for beating Aldritch without triggering his combat AI.

It’s a bit shit to give Arkane shit for something you very ardently defended back in 2015. Why is it wrong for Arkane to feel that there’s no danger in games being refunded or even treated like demos? You know that the WR speedruns aren’t actually going to be done within Steam’s window for refunds because speedrunning requires multiple playthroughs and attempts to reach those times. It’s dumb to argue that Arkane is somehow going to dredge up dead fears that short games won’t sell anymore when that’s exactly what you’re doing in the video. If you know that refunds… Read more »

That bit at the end is great. It really highlights the misconception of who millennials actually are. Millennials aren’t kids right now. They are the generation that came of age around the turn of the millennium. They are adults. They are generally the very same dinguses who complain about them in internet forums.

Oddly enough, I got a refund for “Umbrella Corps” last year, then earlier this year I bought the wrong game by accident….. Sony refused to give me a refund on the other game I bought due to the Umbrella Corps refund, even though the other game hadn’t even been downloaded yet.

No Arkane. few days ago they argued about not having a FOV slider in their game… because that is apparently to much effort nowdays.

vexer
Guest

What I mean it sounds like something Bethesda forced on them. Also Arkane mentioned that they wanted an FOV slider in the game, but they had issues trying to put it in and they are working on a patch for it right now, for now you can edit the config files to change the FOV(something the devs encouraged).

I was wrong on that point while reading the article on PCG.
while its pular to blame Bethesda on ever misstake i dont think its that in this case, they could just stayed quite but instead showed this narrow view on refund policy (wich every one know any way) that in the end can harm the consumer.
