The Jimquisition: Prey‘s Demo & Arkane’s Cock Cigarette

Demos aren’t exactly fashionable, and Prey not having one on PC is technically a non-issue.

Or it would have been, had Arkane’s reasoning not been so thoroughly and astoundingly wrong. At least when you think about it more than Arkane has.

Bonus Content: Elite Gaming Wisdom with Duke Amiel Du H’ardcore.

I loved the reading of comments. That’s the voice I hear when I read stupid gamer comments, or any comment on the daily mail website (it worth a laugh now and then to look at).

So then… Hastage jimfreedomporn?

Edit: Also. It wasn’t the wig. It wasn’t the makeup. It wasn’t the costume. What caught me off-guard was the fact that he wasn’t wearing eye wear. That was the weird part for me, not seeing him in some kind of glasses.

I was really hoping that on this, or on Podquisition, that you would comment on the Dan Stapleton score. He gave the game a 4 originally because of a bug that wouldn’t let him complete it, and people freaked out. I’d love to hear what you think of that.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the business model of Hatsune Miku Project Diva Future Tone on PS4. It does and doesn’t have a demo, in the sense that the “base game” is free but only includes two songs (so it’s effectively a demo, even if it technically isn’t), and the game proper is sold as DLC. It kind of reminds me of the 90s shareware wave (although shareware tended to be more generous with how much content it gave away for free, which might be why nobody uses that model any more). And I have to say I… Read more »

Kind of funny how fast bethesda’s status as a “darling” is beginning to crack =/

So I played the demo, supposedly the first hour of the game. My first playthrough was about 2 hours, explored all I could and made notes of where I was blocked off. Then I replayed going down a different talent tree to see what extra paths I missed. Then I did that again with the last tree, because I was still genuinely enjoying myself. Do you see the problem with relying on steam refunds? I was past the refund playtime limit before I even finished the demo. I hate having to rush through a game, being the completionist that I… Read more »

Duke seems like a great addition to the show, very disturbing that those were actual comments.

I think I like Duke Amiel Du H’ardcore more than the Jim Sterling character.

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy casual well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.

I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the hundred and twenty thousand casuals already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for livestock.

There are a number of additional points that I’m surprised didn’t get made in the video. 1) Most demos can be replayed infinitely, allowing players to keep coming back, maybe try some different gameplay styles if they want. Not so when you have a hard two hour time limit on your head. 2) A proper demo is a small self-contained chunk of game designed to help a player get a sense of most of what a game is about. The first two hours of a game won’t deliver the same experience as a carefully tailored scene.

As far as the comment at 8:32 about early sales numbers being useless, I think that’s exactly what Arkane is shooting for. A week after release, they’ll be able to call their game the “Best Selling Steam Game of 2017,” disregarding the bit where half the people wound up returning it once they realized it didn’t work/didn’t like it.

that was probably the most accurate depiction of a hardcore gaming asshole I’ve ever seen. Looked very similar to those who complain about safe spaces.

Duke Amiel du H’ardcore is an awesome addition, but for future, can you include the actual comments? I think it’d be funnier that way

Love the new bonus content. I wonder how many of our lovely “elite gamers” used cheat codes, dev consoles and GameGenies/GameSharks when they were younger. In before “THAT’S DIFFERENT!!!111”.

It’s a bit shit to give Arkane shit for something you very ardently defended back in 2015. Why is it wrong for Arkane to feel that there’s no danger in games being refunded or even treated like demos? You know that the WR speedruns aren’t actually going to be done within Steam’s window for refunds because speedrunning requires multiple playthroughs and attempts to reach those times. It’s dumb to argue that Arkane is somehow going to dredge up dead fears that short games won’t sell anymore when that’s exactly what you’re doing in the video. If you know that refunds… Read more »

That bit at the end is great. It really highlights the misconception of who millennials actually are. Millennials aren’t kids right now. They are the generation that came of age around the turn of the millennium. They are adults. They are generally the very same dinguses who complain about them in internet forums.
