The Jimquisition: The Multiplayer-Only Problem

This generation has seen a number of big-budget games go multiplayer-only. This isn’t a problem in theory, but the practice has left more than a little to be desired.

With Titanfall, Evolve, Star Wars Battlefront and Rainbow Six Siege all dumping campaigns, The Jimquisition looks at why this is a problem, and why it shouldn’t be.

Also, you better goddamn believe we’ve got some #FucKonami news this week!

It’s not going to stop happening until people stop buying. I love Star Wars as much as any one else but, Christ I ain’t paying money, real life money for half a game! I feel paying 50 quid for the witcher 3 was too much but wow what a bargain we got there compared to what “other company’s” would have done. I’ve boycotted so many games this year for there clearly being a lack of content, yet some people just eat it up blind to the fact that they, by buying this shit, are encouraging this poor behaviour. Ive found… Read more »

Multiplayer-only AAA titles are always iffy to me, especially when they’re also PvP only. I can maybe see co-op titles having lasting appeal since they can be played with just one other person, but pure team-vs-team PvP just confuses me. I thought we’d gotten that out of our system with Quake 3 and Unreal 2004, yet here we are again. Not that those games can’t work, mind you, but they need to be fucking amazing and revolutionary… And I don’t think the latest crop of those really are. Evolve comes the closest, but that flops on basic gameplay above and… Read more »

I don’t know that I’d go inviting Konami’s lawyers to come at you, Jim. Not that I believe that they’d deign to lower themselves to the point of actively persecuting individual journalists, but the basic fact of the matter here is that they could be telling the truth. Hideo Kojima could be on vacation as far as they’re concerned. I’d actually be more inclined to believe that than some other alternatives. I’m not suggesting that he’s happily emplyed either, but there’s a great big middle there you could be excluding. As for multiplayer only…feh. It basically just means that game… Read more »

More death threats Jim? Jeez, what is it this time? People angry you haven’t posed nude for PlayGirl?

I remember when this trend kicked off on PC in the late 90s with Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament and I remain in a somewhat ‘put off’ state when a game announces it’s online only (doubly so if it’s a MOBA as I don’t see the appeal). That being said, you’re right in there being room for games that focus on either single or multiplayer experiences without a tacked on ‘other’ mode and even though I was dubious in the 90s I have to say Unreal Tournament is one of my favourite games and if I remember rightly it… Read more »

I’m loving Battlefront but yeah, biggest problem is that it just doesn’t come with $60 worth of content, which is why I bought it for $35 off someone who had an Origin code who didn’t want it.

That’s been my beef with multiplayer-heavy games for a while now…how quickly the lessons of Chromehounds [and really, the entirety of the 1st-gen Xbox Live, the protests and rage and etc] are forgotten. Anything that wants to omit an offline experience [be it a traditional campaign, botmatches, local splitscreen] HAS to have some way to keep the game running long after the “official” servers are gone. Otherwise, they’re simply not worth the cash, and lend even more heavily to ‘you had to be there’. I, and countless others, simply refuse to pay ownership prices for a rental…let alone the hyper-inflated… Read more »

Based on that music at the end, I’m willing to bet that Konami is gonna have a bad time.

“What we used to get for our money” Weeeeell, as scummy as certain practices can be nowadays..It’s still not that much different from forcing the player to literally stuff money in the machine to play one more time. A bit off-topic but i guess, I want to say that games were always scummy…Just now it’s different type of scumminess.

Grumpy Pip-boy is adorable. Like a 6 year old who’s just been told he can’t have the biggest piece of cake.

Well said Jim, once again you’ve expressed my exact thoughts on an issue (get out of my brain!).

The complaints about the lack of a single player mode is essentially just a symptom of feeling like we aren’t getting enough for our money… which is totally worth talking about.

Regarding single-player games being playable years from now – Konami has proven with MGSV that even SP can be ruined quite efficiently.

Hm… You say that if a game cuts out the single player campaign, it should double up on the multiplayer side of things, have “extra filling”. Is this true for the reverse? I mean, we all know how tacked on and needless the multiplayer in the first Tomb Raider reboot was, so it was good that they just axed it off the sequel like a gangreen infested limb. Did they put something to make up for the lack of multiplayer? I’m not using that as an argument against Jim’s video, I’m honestly asking because I’m curious.

Not terribly sure Battlefront deserves ire for removing its single player campeign, as much as I enjoyed the originals, anybody attempting to pass off a string of botmatches and a few cutscenes as a proper campaing should be figurtively taken outside and shot.

Don’t get me wrong Battlefront has lack of maps issues (though not perhaps modes, plenty of choice) but a campeign mode wouldnt fix that, and one like the earleir games would basically only expose it further.

EA would also have been even more ruthless DLCwise, adding in a second similarly priced single player season pass.

Jim, you need to get your “review” and “reviews” tags cleaned up. Also, on Downwell your “iOS” and “contains skeletons” tags got jumbled into one.

How many times can Geoff Keighley say “uhh” in a single sentence? It was literally half of everything he said. Isn’t public speaking his job?

After being badly burned by Titanfall I did not dare to look into Evolve and Battlefront. I loved Titanfall but it took 4 payed DLC to make it a decent game. By the time the last DLC arrived the game was almost dead.

For me multiplayer only is only part of the 2015 problem. The real problem is multiplayer-only-skeleton-of-a-game where you can only get the full experience by buying more DLC.

That is why this year I rather spent money on F2P games like Dirty Bomb or Warframe than on skeleton AAA games.

Every time Dark Souls is mentioned it makes me a happy camper!
With that being said, why hasn’t Jim used Dark Souls (and Bloodborne) as shining examples of what DLC should offer gamers?

As long as these games are profitable the way they are released, nothing will change. Wanting more or wanting something better is fine. But it does not help that the games mentioned here were selling pretty good. There is no incentive for the majors to change anything. So nothing will change.

Death threats? Are these sometimes from paetron contributors? People be weird like that (Poor Dimebag). Even Stephen Fry gets death threats and he’s just a wonderful bundle of joyous knowledge. Also, pro-tip: with your defensive new stance, i recommend a full naked attire as opposed to only half naked. Also running and screaming towards them, swinging that beauty violently around. Can’t be too careful. 😉

Why America? Is it the taxes? The air is 50% more dense with bullets there. Though probably still un upgrade from our political situation.

once again, you take the words right out of my mouth. multiplayer games are not panning out due to content, design, and well, everything else. I can see the appeal of multiplayer focused games since so much of the indie scene is flooded with them, but big budget triple A companies charging $60 or more for lackluster multiplayer experiences? Yeah no….

People are giving Jim death threats? Don’t they know that if Jim were ever to leave this mortal coil, he would become a schizophrenic God-Satan and usher in a infinity of darkness and despair?

I love then even-handedness of this. Where many people would outright vilify the very idea of multiplayer-only (while promoting single player-only, go figure), Jim is more than happy to weight such efforts on their own individual merit. It’s just a shame that the merit is mostly lacking.
