The Jimquisition: When Jim Sterling Was Sued For $10 Million By Digital Homicide

I am the videogame critic they tried to sue for $10 million.

I’ve kept relatively quiet for almost a year while a spurious and disgusting libel lawsuit was spuriously filed in an attempt to disrupt my life.

Now I get to talk.

Someone should write a book on this titled “Absloute Failure – The True Story Of Digital Homicide”.

Problem with that is that they would end up with more of a pamphlet instead of a book.

Oh I’m sure it will be bigger and thicker then the legal documentation that Digi Hom sent Jim, in fact I’ll try to write it myself. Might take a while so I might update you all in say 5 months, if I can be bothered.

At this point I feel sorry for Romine. I’m sure that in his world it all made perfect sense.
But the whole thing raises an interesting question – can a person be held accountable for not having any rationality whatsoever? I mean, it’s not like he chose his grand delusion willfully. So is it a simple personal flaw then, or rather a clinical infliction?

Yet people who commit criminal acts while being mentally incapable are still incarcerated into a mental institution.

I still think there’s not enough of a punishment for frivolously throwing accusations and lawsuits around.

Then again, I’m not American and the only thing you’d hear over here is how everyone and their mother can sue everyone and their mother in America.

Apparently, being a narcissist who frivolously throws accusations and lawsuits around can get you elected for president there, so what do we know.

Trump is the winning lottery ticket covered in feces. People wanted it regardless of the circumstances, and they were willing to ignore the shit for the promise of the change it would bring. Unfortunately, the joke is on them: The lottery board doesn’t accept biological waste. Won’t stop them from trying to spin it to seem like they made the right decision though.

True, but Constitutional Monarchy has solved that problem.

It seems strange but the more I read up on it the more I believe that the only way democracy can be truly expressed and protected is when there is an unelected executive who uses her powers only in the most extreme circumstances of Parliamentary crisis.

hmmm…Well I’m glad it’s over and I wish you good luck in the future Jim. Hopefully with this despicable lawsuit behind you, you will have the time, funds and emotional capital to focus on new and exciting productions.

Also, you are looking really good! That shirt is a bit too big for you now! 😉

I’m fairly certain Jim’s audience isn’t in the millions (at least in terms of youtube subscribers) because his fans are in fact the opposite of “young and impressionable.” I’d go so far as to say that most of us are probably in the median age range of 25-35, have been gamers for quite some time and due to that fact are jaded and cynical as fuck. We watch Jim not because his opinions shape our own (though his arguments might change our minds because we’re thinking creatures capable of thought and rethinking things) but because with everything we have seen… Read more »

Which is strange, because when I (mistakenly) browse gaming forums, I very frequently see you described as immature and troll-y.

Jim’s take on immaturity is a rhetorical device. Real immaturity is the stuff of those few Tubers who make their living opening CS:GO or Overwatch packs in full view of the public.

“OHMIGAWRSH, A RARE SKIN! I’MMA FLAIL SO HARD I’LL FALL OFF MY CHAIR! THUMBNAIL GOLD, BABY!”

Anton

Oh, I’m not questioning Jim’s approach; it’s just sad that so many people don’t see past his outer presentation.

Weasel Biggs

Weasel Biggs

That’s more than likely because of a lack of maturity on their part. It takes a level head to appreciate deliberate clownishness. Beyond that, taste has to be considered. Not everyone wants their investigative journalism slathered in satire and self-deriding formulations.

Plus, if you’re still at the stage where games are Serious Business to you, you’d probably rather the grinning jester acted more like an executioner or a judge. Me, I’ll take Steam Cleanlight and the Steam Cleaner over any of the usual frothing, ALLCAPS rants about the borderline Julio-Claudian downfall of Steam.

I presume the people who do that don’t actually bother to look into who Jim is and how he conducts himself; they probably hear about him from other angry little games-forum dwelling miscreants and instead of trying to figure out the truth for themselves simply parrot it. They’re the kinds of people who will post angrily on his reviews and other uploads while showing a keen lack of knowledge about literally anything Jim does and posts in a legit show of disdain and not in some pitiful attempt to be a troll. But that is hinged on my personal bias… Read more »

Exactly. If the first thing you ever hear about someone is how immature, sarcastic, self-aggrandizing, and possibly how destructive they are, then you aren’t going to come in with balanced expectations. Imagine how the Romines describe Jim Sterling to people who have never heard of him. Or No Man’s Sky fanboys. Or Nintendo fanboys. And then imagine the crazy mess of biases and prejudice those who hear that carry in to their first exposure to Jim Sterling. For example, someone says ‘This guy is so full of himself!’ and when the person checks him out, and sees the podium and… Read more »

Or, at least nobody should use it unironically as an insult. Because, you know, justice is a good thing, and the people who fight for it are virtuous.

Coincidently Jim was an acquired taste for me. I’m probably too critical towards over-egocentric characters like Jim Sterling or JonTron. But Jim kinda grew on me (and I watch JonTron occasionally just for laughs).

Anton

Anton

But, isn’t it obvious that the egocentric persona is just a bit of comedy that is used to drive the point home?

CaitSeith

Just because it’s comedy it doesn’t make it automatically likeable. Besides, I’m more a fan of self-deprecating comedy.

Anton

Pretty sure that there is plenty of self-deprecating here. Jim describes himself as a “d-list pundit” every chance he gets, for a start.

And that’s part of why Jim grew on me. That humor made his persona to seem more than an unidimensional egomaniac.

No wonder the AAA industry and others black listed you. You’re reaching people who:

A) Have more disposable income
B) Are the parents of the kids that would buy games

Even if you only had let’s say… 200,000+ views that is still a significant portion of a 4-5 million copy goal.

60$ x 200,000 = 12,000,000 potential dollars. Obviously there are lots of other factors but still. They must really see you as a threat or at the very least, a significant factor.

Salador
Guest

That would be assuming that everyone who watched Jim’s videos agreed with his assessments and followed his advice to the letter on which games to buy and which to avoid. And, that doesn’t take into account trolls, contrarians, and the bored housewives who tune in for Jim’s sexy pog antics. I don’t think it’s healthy to blindly follow someone like that, and I don’t think that’s the kind of fanbase Jim wants, or the kind of fanbase he’s cultivated over the years. Which is why it’s good to come here: you can disagree, and it’s cool, because you can have… Read more »

You’re absolutely right. I hope that I made it clear. But for clarities sake it is just “potential dollars” since a lot of factors go into weather or not someone buys a game. And not everyone who watches Jim’s video’s follows his reviews as well. And not everyone will agree with his assessments (I hate Souls games and really liked Yoshi’s Woolly World, for example). And not all of his work is about specific games. I was trying to get more at the idea that his audience is more significant to “The Industry” based on who tends to follow and… Read more »

Oh, I agree with you as well, at least that those companies see Jim as something of a threat. But, in all honesty Jim is influential, but not influential enough to tank a AAA game. Hundreds of voices bemoaning Season passes, excessive DLC and microtransactions etc haven’t prevented those things from becoming industry standard.

They definitely see Jim as someone who doesn’t have to be accomodated with access to reviews etc, but really Jim is a threat to their egos. Some sarcastic British dude talking shit about their products probably gets under (some of) their skins.

I prefer to think of him as a thread needle aimed at the femoral artery.

That might just be idealistic though. haha

Well now the final nail has been hammered into the asset flipped coffin of this digital suicide, it’s about time to say congratulations on finally getting free of this ridiculous hassle by a person who quite likely required some professional counselling (at the very least) much earlier in his life to avoid this self-induced situation. It’s weird, when it comes to how criticism is handled, I see parallels with trump supporters (now apologists, because that’s what it’s come to now) and even trump himself, who, instead of dealing with criticism in any mature or self-aware way, they basically say the… Read more »

I didn’t want to publicly associate Romine with Trump, seeing as I think Presidential Fatigue has set in pretty harshly across both the US and Canada – but seeing as you’ve done it… The current administration is pushing through a cavalcade of failure, and the only remedy is their somehow learning the value of criticism. Being in power doesn’t mean setting a torch to everything the other guy did, it means acting responsibly considering the state of the nation. And Romine, if he’d been considerate, should have left it alone from Day One. Yes, Jim had some harsh criticism to… Read more »

Not related, but I bought two Boglins and a comic convention on Saturday and I was wanting help in identifying them.

The were about hand size, white, glow in the dark and one had boils, teeth, Simpsons hands and a ridged spin while the other more lizard hands, no teeth, two horn and no ridged spin or boils.

The two glow-in-the-dark medium Boglins were Glank (he’s the grinning one with the pointier head) and Doing (not smiling, droopy ears).

What a strange world this is. We live in a world where a film can both win and not win Best Picture at the Ocars. Where the founder of a company (Palmer Luckey, Oculus) can both support and not support Donald Trump (Google Oculus Trump for more info). And where a shit developer can sue and not sue Jim for critiquing their shit games.

I’d say it’s more a case of Schrodinger’s Lawsuit. Put your filing papers and evidence in a box, with a vial of acid standing in for objective reviews of your claims. Do you, or don’t you have a lawsuit on your hands? If you’re sane, then you don’t. Objectivity eats away at your claims, and you’re left with nothing. If you’re Robert Romine, your claims are ironclad and would stand firmly before any court of law. The suit was both a farce and a very serious matter. It was worthy of serious consideration, and also wasn’t. Consequently, Stanton v. Romine… Read more »

But seriously Jim I really sympathise with you having been put through the mill, I wish Digital Homicide should have had a frank conversation with you regarding them in the future attempting to increase the quality of their games and / OR reducing their price point of their games to accurately reflect quality. Nah, opposite. That case is completely fucking mad, Jim didn’t even mention half the shit it did wrong. From basic grammar to the several ways the case fundamentally cannot work, not to mention how shitty the content was. It would take a judge a very long time to describe all the different ways this case was stupid. If you put a jigsaw together missing a piece it’s really easy to describe what’s wrong. If you set a jigsaw on fire, tell people it’s a purple aardvark and throw shit at them, it’s really quite hard to describe all the ways… Read more »
