Eliot wasn’t a cute guy in this movie, he was a weird man. Bad movie. 😛

Seriously though I can’t wait to listen to this when I get home, should be a good laugh.

I especially like that the pirate captain guy is Liu Kang. Gives it a certain Irony or something…

It was funny, checking this movie out on IMDb only to find that I had given it a 7/10 score with an average of 4,8 from other users 😀 But the thing is, I do like it and so do Jim and Conrad, so I don’t have to feel like I was a complete idiot 10 years ago when I gave it that rating (I probably was an idiot, as much as I am one now, but that’s a whole different story). Anyway, the movie does what it sets out to do, it doesn’t take itself seriously and has a… Read more »

Disagree that DOA is a good film. It’s like Charlie’s Angels (an equally terrible film, which I was very surprised wasn’t mentioned) crossed with Mortal Kombat and the result is as bad as that sounds. And even in a so bad it’s good way, it wasn’t nearly as much fun for me as Uwe Boll’s House of the Dead or BloodRayne which imo easily meet the threshold (i.e. can be enjoyed in an Ed Wood sort of way).

Well, you’ve done it, Movie Boys! Looks like this is the one you’ve finally sold me on. When I first caught a whiff of this movie back in 2006, I gave it an immediate No because it looked like it’d be a stupid, stupid movie that’d take a dump all over the storyline that was Serious Business in my book. Ten years later, I’ve imported the latest game in the series and am putting sunscreen lotion on a tengu. I’ll have my head removed from my ass, get some beers, and give this one a fair shot over the weekend.… Read more »

I only have one question Jim. Does this Move feature some Great King Henry the 8th Tits ?

Team Ninja are sleazy as all hell (damn do I ever love Ninja Gaiden though), but Tecmo is clearly playing a big part there too. Jim, you probably would notice that Dynasty Warriors has been definitely getting much more sleazy since the merger took place. I can remember playing Dynasty Warriors 4 and the skeeviest stuff was barbarians in loin cloths, whereas in Dynasty Warriors 8 every new female character has enormous breasts, lots of cleavage and even the “school-girl” aspects of the Qiao sisters has been ratcheted up. DOA as a fighting series is generally considered pretty fun, although… Read more »

Hey, it is at least the 2nd best fighting game based movie after the first Mortal Kombat 😉

Definitely one of the best videogame movie adaptations. It has female fighters, it has skimpy clothing, it has bikinis, it has volleyball, it has implied lesbian undertones, it has a ridiculous Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain and the whole thing is perfectly aware of how campy and absurd the source material is… more than the source material itself!

I’d call it a Top 5 best Videogame movies adaption of all time.

I’m a fan of the Dead or Alive film but not of the games. In the film the actors seem to be having so much fun making the it and the women completely own their sexiness and the fact that they are being objectified. It’s hard not to get swept up in the silliness of the whole thing and enjoy it. I mean, one guy defeats his opponent by accidentally hitting him in the head with a shoe. The games don’t come across in the same way to me, so much of the game’s camera angles and machines focus on… Read more »

I did actually watch this before listening to the podcast (okay, I found it on the internet five minutes in and decided to give it a watch), and I’ll agree with pretty much everything. It was far better than it had any right being. Kevin Nash was hilarious, Jaime Pressly was fun to watch, and the whole thing was just stupid and entertaining.

I am the obligatory member of the FGC here to say that Dead Or Alive (Or to me at least DoA 5) is actually a very good fighting game with a solid paper-rock-scissors backed up by a fast paced and surprisingly simple combo system. 5 Last Round in particular is my favorite because you can turn the jiggle physics waaaaay down and all the female characters have at least one or two costumes that look respectable, and even cool.

I was honestly curious how you would do the “Movie Boys” intro to this since DoA doesn’t have any memorable quotes, so I’m not disappointed. I would have gone with: “It’s time for some Movie Boys Extreme Beach Volleyball!”

This is a movie I genuinely and unironically enjoyed; as someone who is familiar with the games, it’s pretty much dead-on. Implausibly hot girls and ninjas and trashy camp bullshit in a fighting tournament held by an evil corporation, who’s doing shady bullshit behind the scenes to let them use the fighting tournament to steal/copy their kung fu and do evil things with it? That’s the plot of pretty much every Dead or Alive game. The actors seemed to be having a hell of a good time, as well. The opening bit of the movie tries way too hard to… Read more »

Why is it that listing to two guys ramble about a movie is more entertaining, even when it is longer than the movie itself?

Possibly one of the most faithful game-to-film adaptations. Sexy babes in a fighting tournament, plus beach volleyball. It’s exactly what the DOA series is.

The programme with the little pink-haired girl was Lazytown. I saw a bit recently on TV for the first time in years and I never realised quite how horrifying the puppets were until then. I also heard at college a few years ago that the actress who played the little girl is now a prostitute, but I never checked up on that. It adds to the legend if all you know are rumors.

I saw this film on late night TV a while ago, and while i have no love or desire for the DOA games, this film was surprisingly entertaining. I was prepared to swap channels, but it warmed to me. Still not interested in the games though. Joyce and her dad were the highlights definitely 🙂

I think I see a trend that you kind-of pointed out: You guys like Fighting Game Adaptations. All of your examples were FGAs. You seem to have the most fun with them in the podcast, and the episodes are generally positive.

So… more FGAs I guess in the future?

The thing I love the most about this series, and others like it like Senran Kagura, etc, is that no-one can talk about it without being awkward. Tits get everyone flustered, without fail.

Between this, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, there seems to be a bit of a formula for adapting fighting games to movies; go full fucking camp and off the wall, and aim for PG/12 to keep it light hearted. It kinda works, although I’ve not seen this one myself. Wouldn’t get a movie like these made today, sadly, not enough camp in the world.

Oh yay, I’m glad to see by the description that you seemed to like this. I’ve seen it twice now, and both times I walked away thinking that this is a legitimately, even intentionally, hilarious film which is well aware of how dumb it is and is playing it up for all it’s worth. Like, during the opening 3 character introductions, I was basically busting a gut laughing the entire time and yelled out “oh my God, I love this movie” on more than one occasion. The villain’s “evil plan”? Absolutely hilarious. Even the bad CGI works perfectly in the… Read more »

Spoony once said, and I agree, that this movie is perfect for Dead or Alive *because* of its stupid goofy stuff and titilation. Because that’s the entire basis of the DoA games.

Also I love every part of Kevin Nash in the movie. *blasts down door, sees his daughter in bed with another woman, excuses himself*
