Overall that was quite a good episode. A few missteps (one I already gave below before finishing the episode). Another was suggesting that the CGI is a product of it’s time isn’t quite right imo. Jurassic Park was made two years BEFORE Mortal Kombat – Reptile has no business looking as totally shit as he does! The crappy lightning effects etc are considerably worse than Star Wars or Ghostbusters, films that were made over a decade earlier!
Jim will be pleased to find out there is a third Bloodrayne film, BloodRayne: The Third Reich (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1153546/) where Rayne fights Nazis.

Jurassic Park was mostly practical effects, if I’m remembering correctly. Oh, and direction from Stephen Spielberg (who’s good and all, but is he Paul W.S. Anderson?) CGI in 1995 was horrible in all but the absolute top tier films (where it was used sparingly on account of it being expensive and not looking that great). Hell, look at Spawn in 1997. There’s a film with more than twice the budget of Mortal Kombat released two years later and its CGI is no better (the art school interpretation of hell from this flick is actually ten times better looking than Spawn’s).… Read more »

Jim you say that this film captures the “spirit of the video game”. You have completely lost me. The video game is an incredibly over the top violent fighting game. Where, where, WHERE, is the ott violence in this film that is literally the game’s defining point of difference of other (e.g. Street Fighter) fighters? Surely the ott violence is the VERY spirit of the video game, one which movie ENTIRELY fails to capitalise on??!!

I actually really love the bit with reptile going into the statue and bringing it to life. For me, it felt like a reference to the fact reptile was a secret character. An extra optional fight if you will.
Be aware I haven’t seen the movie in over a decade so MK could be horrible by my standards today.

Been looking forward to this! 😀 Movie Defense Force for Mortal Kombat was one of my favorites. I do love how Reptile always seems to get the best music in everything; he’s not even the one fighting (unless you consider a statue powered by him to be him fighting), and he still gets the best track. xD

Only time I’ve ever encountered Gravity Kills was an Akira AMV (which, owing to how well the track suited the video, may have made it seem better), which I thought was pretty good.

This was really fun. Thanks. I enjoy this movie. It’s one of the few good video game movies.

I’m still eagerly awaiting, Double Dragon though. I remember Jim mentioning it in one episode.

It’s funny how you bring up the first fight with Johnny Cage as a possible reference to enemies being stunned when you defeat them. I was around five or so when I played 2 on SNES and I had no godly idea how to do the fatalities (Spoiler Alert: I still don’t). My favorite character was Johnny Cage. So whenever I beat someone I’d just quote him from the movie. “This is the part where you fall down.” And then they’d fall down. I felt a lot more badass than I should. >////>

The best parts of these is listening to Jim and Conrad say “Movie Boys!” in increasingly bizarre ways. Never stop.

I saw a special on youtube (which was probably not supposed to be there) where the director said he wanted this to be like a chinese martial arts movie with hollywood production values. Unfortunately I don’t think they had enough to hire Jackie Chan as a consultant. Still, this is one of the few action movies I’ve seen that didn’t make me lose interest because of fake fighting moves being badly hidden by editing or fight scenes that involve nothing but cover-based shooting. I’m probably in the minority, but I really can’t take interest in an action scene that doesn’t… Read more »

I would definitely buy any Movie Boys merchandise. Including but not limited to a caricature of Sonya bellowing “HAVE A GO IN MY MASSIVE PUSSY”.

It’s even funnier when you consider that Cameron Diaz was originally cast in the Sonya-role, but had to drop out when she broke her hand during rehearsals.

I never played much of the games (and when I did, I thought they were unpleasantly stiff), but I remember having a blast watching this thing. I would probably give the first Silent Hill the edge for best video game movie, however.

I’d be willing to agree. And Ive never even played a Silent Hill game. I just knew it was a horror series and that’s it, so the movie left me asking my friends some questions. Even still…definitely the most engrossing for me

I imagine the Silent Hill episode of this series will be fascinating, due to Jim’s fondness for the series, and his *ahem* history with the company behind the games.

The best videogame movie?? really? I was in misery the whole time watching this whereas I actually quite liked the Street Fighter movie… I guess I’ll have to hear em out to find out why.

Forrest Kayssen

I can see why they would say that. Street Fighter seems to treat it’s source material like a joke, almost as if the film is a spoof parody, or indeed as if it were a comedy like Rush Hour. Mortal Kombat may only pay lip service to the actual plot of the games, but it at least doesn’t try to distance itself from what made the games popular. I mean, look at Tomb Raider. It felt more like a bad Indiana Jones film, as opposed to a mystical adventure. When I was younger, I was expecting something like The Mummy,… Read more »

I guess you are right in the sense that mortal kombat is a much better representation of the source material than Street Fighter. Just for me personally, at the end of the day, I just want to see a good movie and Street Fighter and even Doom were alright but Mortal Kombat made me so bored most of the time.. tho I did get a few laughs out of how bad the cgi looked.

And that, ultimately, is the downfall of most video game movies. Why would you watch it, when you could actually play it?

Main reasons to listen to the Spin off Doctors:
10% – Have a good time listening to the podcast
5% – Get Jim and Conrad’s opinions on the spinoff of the week
85% – To hear how Jim announces the show as “The Movie Boys” this week

In retrospect, it’s a super obvious choice but at the time I forgot Mortal Kombat had a theme song.

Actually, I’m not sure Midway ever put it in one of the games. MK Trilogy had a soundalike intro, but that’s the closest the song came to the games… Which seems daft to me.
