The Spin-off Doctors: Resident Evil

Join your old friends Jim Sterling and Conrad Zimmerman as they get elbow-deep in licensed videogame material. Movies, TV shows, comics (but mostly movies), the doctors are here to examine.

This week, we start with 2002’s Resident Evil, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich.

She kicked a zombie unconscious.

Does films like Wreck It Ralph or abominations like Pixels count as videogame films since they’re not directly based on or linked to any videogame(s)? Also really enjoyed this and I’m looking forward to the next one, it’s a good way of finding out about these films without ever having to go through the trauma of watching one.

I hope so, because (along with those two) there are a few movies I’d like to cover that have video games as a major part of their narrative.

These movies are my guilty pleasure. I know their dumb, but I just love them to bits. Everything Paul W.S. Anderson does I like, Event Horizon is a legit good movie and the first Mortal Kombat is, in my opinion, the best video game movie adaptation. Can’t wait for them to do the rest of Anderson’s movies, and yes, that Wesker is amazing.

As a big fan of movies (far more so than games), this is a pretty good idea for a podcast it must be said, and I wish it all the best! Could imo have used a teensy tiny bit more structure maybe. Anyway, definitely looking forward to the next episode. I’ve seen almost all of Boll’s films (it’s a bit of a hobby or something, I’m not really sure). His game-based films are almost all terrible (I especially hated Far Cry and Postal), but I kinda enjoyed the very much despised Bloodrayne. I wonder if his generally super low imdb… Read more »

My favorite RE movie was Degeneration, followed by Damnation. I have no defense for them other than that I have an easier time suspending disbelief when a movie looks like a video game. Also, the latter had a terrorist claim to hate american consumerism but love american products, which I find hilarious.

it’s funny Jim gave Alice the last name of Redetine.. since when the movie was original announced all those years ago, Milla Jovovich was suppose to play Jill Valentine before they changed the story.. The current character’s name is Alice Park.. but the wiki i read said her real name is Janus Prospero

i loved the RE movies.. especially RE Apocalypse .. that was a really good film..even though the films don’t follow the games too much is some ways, they’ve evolved into great series of films within the RE universe that do their own thing and.. SQUIRRELS!

What have movies come to when that’s considered a “good film”?

See I loved the second one as well. Silly and over-the-top yes, but I thought it was quite well acted, directed and generally made. ^^d

Holy fuck James Purefoy is in this film. Was he desperate for money or something?

I’m gonna pretend this new thing is an unofficial tip of the hat to the late, great Ryan Davis and his TANG series.

He made good movies what the hell event horiuzon and mortal kombat and shopping

Jack Man

He got lucky once with Event Horizon and I’d chalk that up mostly to the fact that someone else wrote the story.

Mortla kombat and shopping are good. again even horizion proves he can make a good film

He at least should never right another screenplay again. Event Horizon had a good script, the directing was competent, I’ll give you that one, but it would have turned out better with a more talented director. Never saw shopping so I can’t make a call about that one.

No. In fact, when the next one comes out, I’m going to buy an extra ticket just for you.
Actually, no, I’m too tight-fisted for that. I will say that in a world of Sharknados and Birdemics and Troll 2’s that people spend money on…old WS is a better director than anyone involved in those flicks.

Honestly? I don’t even think of the films when the name “Resident Evil” is mentioned, so divorced are they from anything the source material tried to do.

hey guys, cool stuff, nice episode. I would however suggest a slight bit extra structure, to prevent missing a beat. Like having a set of headers like: plot, acting, cinematography/animation, etc and once you knock that out go into more general rambling.

I remember that one wesker fight scene with chris redfield in one of the later films was literally copypasted from a cutscene in RE5. That was fun.

The first Resident Evil is quite wretched, but Apocalypse is worse. The only “decent” one IMHO was Extinction, and Afterlife was entertaining in an absolutely brain-dead sort of way. Good luck with Retribution though, that one is by far the absolute worst…

And OH MY GOD, House of the Dead!!! That was one of those movies where I couldn’t believe that it was actually theatrically released, it’s such a hilarious trainwreck which is disastrous on every level.

A friend dragged me to Apocalypse. From that point onward, I had trouble trusting people, including my friends. I resolved never to see another movie without seeing the reviews.

Zombies aren’t the problem. People who mindlessly go to movies without reading reviews are the problem.

Since you were asking, there was a Red Alice sort of thing in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles if I recall correctly. That was one of those rail shooters on the Wii.

Stephen Mc Devitt

I like her and I totally agree. Both Alice and Lightning are action females who kick ass but add little when Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, Samus Aran and Chun-Li already beat them to the punch. Even ones after them like Michonne and Mikasa gained more notability than those two flying gunslingers with their directors (Anderson and Toriyama) obsessed with them.

Well kit wouldn’t look cool and thing is I actual defend paul WS andrson as he made event horizon which I like and think it a good scfi horroe film but this no. H elooked cool while doing it but he should have survived it should have got soemojne in front of him. However I wil disagree when they get to the silent hill film because I like that one

The computer generated map of Umbrella’s underground facility was actually created by Jonti (Weebl) Picking, the guy who made the Badgers, Badgers, Badgers flash animation.

Is Mortal Kombat still the best video game to movie adaptation? That is a damn sorry state of affairs.

Anton

Define what you mean by “best”… If you mean unintentionally most hilarious, I might agree with you.

I actually like the Resi movies, especially the first two. They get campy B-movie horror just right, imo.

Verbalrob

Verbalrob

It’s not a great film by any means but I think Mortal Kombat is the video game movie that I have enjoyed the most and is also probably the closest to its source material. The first Resident Evil movie and the first Silent Hill movie are the only ones that have come close so far in my opinion.

Anton
Guest
Anton

You do have a point. Playing through MK9’s story, I kept thinking how much the godawful acting reminded me of the MK movies.

Anton
Guest
Anton

The Resi movie makes less sense than the game? As in, the game in which to open one door, you must:

– Find masks randomly scattered through mansion
– Place masks on the wall in conveniently placed adjacent mausoleum
– Open a coffin that is suspended from the ceiling
– Kill the infected murder machine residing in that coffin
– search the aforementioned murder machine for the key which in no way looks like any key ever made.

THAT makes more sense than a slightly overpriced train station?

Mike Wallace
Guest
Mike Wallace

It’s especially confusing when you realize the mansion has maybe four bedrooms, none of which have windows, and there’s only one bathroom. If you’re the guy living on the west end of the mansion, you’ve got to walk through several locked doors to reach the can.

Anton
Guest
Anton

You know, I want to play a Resi game set before RE1. The protagonist is an innocent Umbrella employee working in the mansion. The game entails solving all of those ass-backwards puzzles just to get through menial every day tasks.

“Hey Johnson, where’s the key to the printer/copier room?”

“I gave it back to the carnivorous plant!”

“Motherfucker…. alright, get the herbicide, here we go again…..”
