I persoanlly love this movie. Moving on.
This is for Jim. The spikey leather chick is named Big Bertha. She is a reference to the large red fish that eats Mario in a couple of games. Fits her in movie char as she is fast and dominating since in the games she comes out of the water exteme fast and is an insta-death unless you have the star power-up.

I certainly understand the association issue with the Super Mario Bros 3 and depression thing, as –not recommended reading– had (well have still) a similar association with a particular mix album and a dark period in early life involving regular increasing attempts at you-know-what. We were pretty poor, so there was that one album that was new enough to listen to often, and the attempts got me increasingly more sick for days on end that parents thought was taking to get out of school. There are also 3 flavours of cheap carbonated drinks that I associate with achey nausea which… Read more »

Some end of year questions for anyone that cares enough to answer:
1) Favourite film covered so far
2) Favourite episode so far
3) Most anticipated episode
4) Most anticipated upcoming film

For me it’s Double Dragon, Pokemon: The First Movie, Far Cry, and the Tomb Raider Reboot.

For the first time I watched the movie that the podcast was talking about. Specifically, I watched it on youtube after it was mentioned with the podcast on pause. I remember having trouble keeping up with this movie as a kid, and I still had some trouble. I had to give up understanding anything they were doing in the tower. Freezing the tower that their friend is still in? Going up the elevator with no knowledge what each floor is? Escaping through a hatch and suddenly being in a weird Portal-esque landscape? And with all that the movie makers decided… Read more »

From what I’m aware there’s a bit more to Nintendo being sued over the people holding the rights to King Kong. Apparently it occurred because the rights holder’s didn’t do any actual research into Nintendo thinking we can get away with suing this tiny Japanese company. Nintendo not being a small Japanese company.

This would be a weirdly watchable film… if it wasn’t supposed to be Super Mario Bros. It’s kind of like The Howling 2 or House of the Dead, where you watch it and wonder what the fuck the creators were thinking when they put this in theaters.

This movie was so weird. I remember being a small boy and actually wondering, “If the world is a desert what are they drinking?” And, I also remember going, “That’s not Yoshi?”

There was an idea for a good movie under there it just got lost. But after 23 years people still talk about it and it has had a lot of lasting impact.

EDIT

Oh and yes the shoe message cop thing was really really weird. But you guys’s description and interpretation was hilarious.

I watch Hook for Hoffman and Hoskins, which sounds like a Law Firm for pirates; Hook, Hoffman and Hoskins.

I am also a fan of Hook.

And despite knowing I watched this, it was so long ago… I need to watch it again. The plot synopsis can only get one so far, after all.

Would the movie being animated with the original character designs, but with Dinohatten being less well designed (since they took the budget away from the city to invest in the animation) make it a better or worse movie?

Do you think you guys will make a special episode for Assassin’s Creed if you both see it, or will you just wait until it’s digitally released? (Take note, I have just started listening to the episode, so mayhaps you already answered that question.)

These podcasts help pass time at work – so I appreciate the two hour length.

So, since they mentioned Hook and Rufio specifically…Do I get to tell Jim that both Rufio´s in Homestuck and that Dante Basco is a big fan himself?

I’m happy you guys touched on the development hell this went through. It really is an interesting (and rather dark) thing to read up on for any interested.

Also, congratulations, Conrad, on getting Plague Road funded. Excited to get my hands on it come summer time.

It’s “The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3” you’re thinking of, Jim. Yes, that’s what the show is called. I have the DVD collection, as well as “The Super Mario Bros. Super Show”. And Danny Wells plays an amazing Luigi.

But not having seen the movie since I was a child (and well before getting any good exposure to the shows), I never made that connection. I’d be shocked if there weren’t some amount of purposeful reference there, especially since TAoSMB3 featured the Koopa Kids.

Fun podcast as usual! Also, iirc the lady in the red spiky suit was meant to represent the giant fish.

What was the deal with the sleigh bells that popped up in the background multiple times? I thought it was Jim trying to interrupt for facts at first, but the first one was while he was talking. So then I thought it was Conrad interrupting since he knew the facts, but the second one was while he was talking. Am I reading too deep into this? 😛

Jim, I watched this on Amazon and I don’t think there were any facts. This was one of the ones that they couldn’t be bothered with.

The main reason I dislike Happy Holidays is that it’s just so dry. I’d much rather just go through every possible phrase noting that this time of year should be good for people and have it feel like it means something.
