The Spin-off Doctors: Wing Commander

Oh hello there, it’s time to have a bad time. We call this time the Bad Time Time.

Wing Commander is not a very good movie, but we watched it anyway. A 1999 movie that looks like it was made in the 1980s, featuring a plot that makes no sense, a lack of antagonists, and the worst space navy in the universe, it’s one of those films that might have been entertainingly bad if it wasn’t just plain bad.

Anyway, your Movie Boys try and make it interesting for you.

So have you considered getting that Paulson friend of yours to assist in doing future pokemon episodes? He seems like that might be in his wheelhouse.

Every time they say Freddie Prince, Jr., I was stuck between imagining Freddie from the live action Scooby Doo movies and The Iron Bull; eventually it turned into Bull in an orange ascot and a sailor outfit. Not a bad image, but a pink ascot would be better.

Jim was particularly annoying this episode, Fuck Jim take your Ritalin before recording! Couldn’t stay on subject for more then 30s. We get it! You hate the movie, but really I think you hate the genre. Wing Commander was the best naval space combat movie of it’s time, yes, because it was the only one. But it still deserves a good 5/10. If plot holes and bad acting by twenty-somethings where a big deal you would have committed suicide over all the shit zombie movies that you covered. But you don’t give a fuck as long as there’s cheesy gore… Read more »

Freddie Prinze Jr is a much better voice actor than he is a film actor.
He was great in Dragon Age: Inquisition, did a good job in ME3, and has been great in Star Wars Rebels.

Also thank you so much Jim for reminding of all things someone born after 1999 wouldn’t know anything about. In my head 1999 is like 10 years ago, not almost 20. I feel so old right now.

I have never heard of this film before now. So glad I didn’t go to the cinema as much those days.

Hey just got home and finished the episode. Thanks as always…and I can not say enough how I am so very sorry Conrad and Jim for suggesting this awful awful boring dumpster film. lol As I rewatched it, I thought, “Why the fuck did I like this when I was 13?” I can only imagine how boring my parents must have thought it was since we saw it as a family. Memories…lol But it did make for an entertaining episode. Also, I was wondering; Is “Bayonetta: Bloody Fate” on the agenda? Oh! and I am hopeful that there will be… Read more »

I’m assuming it is at some point. I mentioned it on one episode and Conrad replied stating he was looking forward to it.

What’s weird is, at least some groups of Aboriginal Australians traditionally ignore all memory of their dead, to the point that Australian TV with footage of deceased Aboriginal people often has a sort of content warning beforehand. I really don’t understand it. There was a different TV show about British comedian Alan Davies and his childhood, and when his mother died early his father refused to talk about her, which just made the loss worse.

George

Don’t they have very elaborate funeral rituals that can last days and involve whole communities before that point though?

I think that the main difference is that in this stupid movie they don’t morn…

I admittedly don’t know much about Aboriginal funerals. But even then, what if people still need to talk about it after the funeral?

George

From the limited reading I’ve done the groups that do this have a special set of terms that they use to describe the people who have died and after a certain point the morning is done in private as doing so publicly is considered disrespectful.

My understanding is not that they ignore the memory of their dead, but that they will stop saying their name because they believe this will disturb their spirit, and not let them rest. This got extended to pictures of them after europeans showed up. Thus they won’t want to watch TV shows featuring footage of dead people.

Apparently some groups give the deceased a special “bereavement name” so they can talk about them without disturbing their spirit.

Spoony’s review of this movie really makes the thing feel a lot more tragic since he outlines that this actually could’ve been a really good movie. The later Wing Commander games practically already were movies. And they had great actors like Mark Hamil, Tom F. Wilson, and John Rhys Davies. Just adapt the plot of the games into a movie, call all those guys back, give yourself a much bigger budget and maybe even reuse some of the costumes and bam you’ve got an already made movie! That they decided to dump that great cast and get Shaggy and Freddy… Read more »

Dungeon Siege is next eh? I have actually had people tell me, with a straight face no less, that it’s a pretty good movie. Having seen my fair share of Uwe Boll films and knowing that this was hot on the heels of his notoriously bad early films, I have a hard time believing that is the case. It can’t be duller than Wing Commander though, right?

Robert’s is such a terrible director, I’m actually seriously a little worried about the Star Citizen single-player campaign (Squadron 42), featuring the likes Gary Oldman (a Movie Boys favourite!), Mark Hamill, Rhona Mitra, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Liam Cunningham (Davos from Gamer of Thrones), John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis and Mark Strong.

Why? His WC games, Starlancer and Freelancer had very good SP campaigns. A LOT of developer veterans of Ye Olde Days from Origon & Digital Anvil were hired by CIG.

And you know who is charge of SQ42? His brother, Erin Roberts, who produced and directed VERY good ingame sequences for Privateer 2 with John Hurt and Clive Owen.

The probability that SQ42 will be worse than those classics does exist of course, but it isnt very high 🙂

Oh, boy, I’ll savour this later. I never had the courage to watch the movie itself since while the old games had great presentation the only one that has a shred of a good plot is Wing Commander IV, the only one besides 2 (and some expansions of 1 if I remember correctly) that wasn’t strictly black & white and had some gameplay variation here and there. But listening to the first minutes: yeah, X-wing and Tie Fighter are miles better and aged much better, especially Tie Fighter (which has better feedback for the objectives, better difficulty curve and a… Read more »

Why does my mind keep confusing Chris Roberts and Randy Pitchford? I always have to double check whenever they’re brought You should try Lucky number slevin, it’s pretty good. With Morgan Freeman and Ben kingsley as opposing gang leaders (but not protagonists). Bear in mind that producers don’t really give any indication on the quality of anything. It’s like trying to gain perspective on a person from only their estranged dad’s child support payments. And executive producer is even worse! Like an estranged dad’s girlfriend’s signature on the payments cos she was just happy to officially be a part of… Read more »

I thought this movie was just “alright”. It was trying to be sincere and at least somewhat entertaining, but I was so disengaged throughout it that it just turned into background noise while I played Pokemon Moon and took on the double-battle challenge in the battle tree. Actually managed to get to the 20th level and beat Gary, which was unexpected and exciting.

So, I guess in summation, Pokemon Moon is fun and I definitely recommend it.

I remember going to theaters to see trailers too. There was a movie I went to go see in the theater (around 99/00) specifically because it featured a Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask trailer beforehand.

I remember the trailer to this day, but for the life of me can’t remember what the actual movie was.

How are there so many actors in this film who are at least solid and yet this thing’s utter crap. Actually that could apply to a lot of the films that have featured on this podcast. Speaking of which, Jim, Freddie Prinze Jr’s The Iron Bull in Dragon Age.

The film has several actors who are very good character actors such as David Suchet & David Warner and Matthew Lillard in full 90s mode.

I know that. What I want to know is how, in spite of this, has this film and so many others turned out to be so shit. Even if they’re working with a crap script etc good actors can still do something with it.
